Maya Rudolph, who we always thought was way underappreciated on Saturday Night Live, and who was also great in Idiocracy, which we loved and were the only people not hiding from the cops to see in the theater, is expecting baby #2 with Paul Thomas Anderson, director of Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Punch Drunk Love, and There Will Be Blood. Saturday May 17th at 9 on the Peacock. Now that's something for Natalie to rap about. In talking about hosting this special, Samberg gave a shout out to two SNL short films that inspired him - Eddie Murphy's "White Like Me" and Harry Shearer's "Synchronized Swimmers," which also starred Christopher Guest and Martin Short.They're both absolutely brilliant comedy classics.

Samberg on "Synchronized Swimmers": "This is not just something that influenced me heavily but influenced everybody in comedy."

Samberg on "White Like Me": "When I was a kid and I saw that, my brain exploded. It was like the greatest thing I'd ever seen in my life."

He's finally getting his college degree from St. Rose in Albany tomorrow, 15 years after he left for L.A. one semester short of graduating. And, though he was tardy to the diploma, he'll be speaking at graduation. Good thing he's a college graduate now, or he'll never amount to anything. Of course, Jimmy Fallon didn't have to go to Albany for that final semester - he just submitted a portfolio of his work as famous guy Jimmy Fallon. Our dropout buddy who works in retail tried the same thing with no luck.

Turns out Fallon started college as a computer science major - which explains "Nick Burns, Computer Guy"...

Okay, back to teasing you, guv. So you complained about those "SNL" Weekend Updates in which Fred Armisen played you as a bumbling fool, saying

Apparently anybody who is blind or deaf or has an ambulatory disability or any kind of physical affect that gets to a leadership position in this country is going to be portrayed as if a bunch of third graders are ridiculing them on Saturday Night Live.

So you're a little sensitive. Still, you make a fair point. But then you made fun of a guy in a wheelchair at a charity dinner in Albany Saturday? What's up with that?

To your credit, though, Governor Paterson, you did do a cartwheel. Which was mighty impressive...

Y'know, for what seemed at the time to be a fairly lackluster episode of Saturday Night Live, there sure are some choice clips to show.

You got the latest Andy Samberg music video, which is called "Like a Boss" and features Andy cutting off his own nuts and then fucking a giant fish. You got Andy and host Seth Rogan yanking all the homoeroticism out of the Fast/Furious franchise's long, hard crankshaft. And you got the above bit, which grafted Fargo and The Muppet Movie into a 2-minute gag that featured Zoot putting a cap in someone's ass and made us realize how overworked the SNL costume department must be if they'll put those outfits together for 120 seconds of airtime. Tears, Drugs, and Rock 'N' Roll Return With VH1's "Behind the Music"

Remember VH1's Behind the Music? It started in 1997 and ran for seven years. The stories were painfully similar: meager beginnings, early success, epic tragedy, and finally meteoric fame. The direction and editing of the documentaries, themselves, were like an opus of bad hair, groupies, and cocaine. Hot, right? VH1 apparently thinks so. The network has just ordered 10 more episodes of BTM. Confirmed stars include Lil Wayne and Scott Weiland.

"It felt like the time is right," said Jeff Olde, VH1 executive vice president original programming. "There's all sorts of new artists on the scene who have emerged and have these great stories. And there's other artists that we always wanted to do the first time around."

VH1 had a reminder of the show's popularity last fall when it aired a well-received 90-minute live New Kids on the Block "Behind the Music" special. The event showed the group's first public performance in more than a decade along with a "BTM" retrospective.

"We always hear about the show, even now," Olde said. "It's amazing how much affection viewers have for it." (yahoo.com)

VH1 will update the show's format for 2009, but not too much. Jim Forbes is back as the show's narrator, though the new episodes will add more current footage to anchor the story in the present day, just as the New Kids special intercut with a live event. (yahoo.com)

Of course, we have a special place in our hearts for BTM -- right next to our special 1990s place for Ecstasy and a booming economy -- so we're pleased that they won' t be messing with it. We don't care if it's lame, we'd still hit that. Any show that's good enough to get an episode-long Simpsons parody is a keeper. Also: "More Cowbell."

Chevy Chase Goes To Community College

He'll co-star in the Joel McHale comedy pilot Community, described as Stripes at a community college. (Stripes, of course, being a film starring Chevy Chase's currently far more successful replacement on SNL.) Will this be a return of funny Chevy? Here's what we know:

The Sony-produced "Community," which is being directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, is described as "Stripes" at a community college. It centers on Jeff (Joel McHale), a lawyer who is back in school after his college degree is deemed invalid.

Chase will play another student at the community college who has been married five times.

Could be good. It's easy to forget, given the debacle that was The Chevy Chase Show and Chase's extremely cranky relations with just about everyone, just how great Chevy Chase was on SNL, and then in Caddyshack, Fletch, and the Vacation movies. It's become cool the past decade to hate the hell out of Chevy Chase - see Tom Shales' history of Saturday Night Live and the vicious 2002 Comedy Central roast of Chase, which visibly upset him. (Richard Belzer: "the last time Chevy Chase had a funny bone in his body was when I fucked him in his ass.")

And Chevy Chase does seem like a bitter, unlikable egomaniac. But he's a bitter, unlikable egomaniac who's also a huge comic talent - he used to be really funny. Here's hoping he will be again.

Seriously, a whopping four years ago, Fred Armisen was on Weekend Update as Steve Jobs talking about the iPod pequeno. Take a look:

Jobs should prob call Tina Fey up stat, and see if she’ll consult for him on a part time basis. It’s not that we don’t think Steve is doing a crackerjack job on his own. Tracy Morgan appears on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon tonight, which won't be as comfy for Fallon as you might think. See, even though Jimmy Fallon and Tracy Morgan worked together on SNL, they are not BFF's. Or don't you remember what Tracy said about Jimmy in the October 2007 issue of Penthouse?

The "30 Rock" star tells the October issue of Penthouse that his castmates were bothered during skits by Fallon's "laughing and all that dumb [bleep] he used to do - he wouldn't mess with me because I didn't [bleep]ing play that s - - t. That's taking all the attention off of everybody else and putting it on you, like, 'Oh, look at me, I'm the cute one.' I told him not to do that s - - t in my sketches, so he never did."

Oh dip. Tracy must have seen how harsh that sounded, so he was softening his remarks a couple weeks later, in an interview with The Onion's A.V. Club:

It wasn't meant to be malicious or anything, just an observation. It was annoying to everybody, I guess. I just said it. I don't know if he knew he was doing it. I don't have anything against Jimmy Fallon. I love Jimmy Fallon. He's my dude.

Aw, Tracy shouldn't have made nice. We want a battle. No violence, mind you; we'd just love to see them both come out with their guns blazing in a comedy shootout. We suspect The Greatest Talk Show Guest Alive would be the only one left standing.

Stalker Item #2: Lorne Michaels' Stalker Is Free, But Not To Stalk Lorne Michaels

This man, Evan Pidhajecky, has been ordered to stay away from Lorne Michaels and get psychological counseling.

Pidhajecky, an aspiring stand-up comedian, thought SNL was using his material and had tried to call Michaels repeatedly at his New York office and home, along with trying to visit Michaels at least six times. So long as Evan Pidhajecky keeps away from Lorne Michaels and undergoes psychological counseling twice a month, the case will be sealed and dismissed, as this was Pidhajecky's first arrest, and he'd complied with the court's orders to stay away from Lorne since the December 2007 arrest. Although Pidhajecky's lawyer Jack Litman thinks a trial could have been really wacky:

"[C]ould have had him up on the stand, Lorne Michaels," Litman said. "It would have been (like) a skit from Saturday Night Live."

Wow, the show's not that bad these days. Well, guess if Lorne's ever looking for his own Mini-Me, he knows where to turn.

Andy Samberg really hopes you like The Lonely Island and their new CD/DVD, "Incredibad." Dude, we've seen these album sales. Sit back and relax. On your piles of money.

"Incredibad", released February 10th, debuted as the #1 comedy album on Billboard. Excellent. But, considering very few people can name any other current comedy albums, no big shocker. But this might be - the CD/DVD (it includes all the viral SNL videos) also debuted at #1 on the ITunes album chart, making it the best-selling debut by a new artist in 2009. Oh, and it also debuted at #13 on the Billboard chart. Of all albums.(It's since dropped to #24 - which still places it directly ahead of Britney Spears' new album and the soundtrack to High School Musical 3. To give you an idea of the popularity.)

Meanwhile, the CD/DVD/Comedygasm is also getting reviews that might make the Lonely Island guys jizz in their pants, with the New York Observer calling "Incredibad" "without a doubt one of the funniest albums, music or otherwise, in years."

Today in What the F: Kenan Thompson says regardless of the recent allegations of domestic abuse, he’d be down to have Chris Brown back on Saturday Night Live if the singer’s appearance would help the ratings. Nice, Kenan. Finally someone has issued a response to this unfortunate affair that is both compassionate and socially responsible. We’re actually totally glad you opened your mouth on this one.

US Weekly online asked Kenan if SNL “would be open to having Chris Brown back.” Kenan responded:

Rock out with your purity rings out!

Alec Baldwin gave his comedic best (which is pretty damn good) on that "Fourth Jonas Brother" sketch, but even that couldn't save the bit from the Jonas Brothers' distinct lack of funny (they do a lot of big facial expression, wacky voice, "here comes the joke" stuff), or the fact that the sketch was pretty much a rip-off of the much better Eddie Murphy "Fifth Beatle" sketch from 25 years ago, except Baldwin was clearly directed to do a creepy Will Ferrell thing - which he pulled off pretty well.

David Paterson wasn't going to say anything this time. But when a Michigan reporter asked Paterson to comment on Saturday Night Live because they "seem to be mocking your disability," Guv went off.

I would say decidedly that they are mocking my disability. Apparently anybody who is blind or deaf or has an ambulatory disability or any kind of physical affect that gets to a leadership position in this country is going to be portrayed as if a bunch of third graders are ridiculing them on Saturday Night Live.

Oh snap. He was just getting started:

These programs that present themselves as comedic relief in many ways are degrading people… I’ll bet you that Saturday Night Live would think twice if they did the same kind of routine and made fun of someone’s race, religion, or national origin...I think they need to bring back Sarah Palin, because they obviously ran out of material.

Feeling kinda cheated this morning. Normally there'd be at least one fairly funny thing that we could be thinking about on a Monday morning. But today? Nope. The College Humor Show, while amusing, had that pilot-y sort of quality where you guess that subsequent episodes might be a riot, but they haven't quite got their thing figured out just yet.

Also last night, a lackluster episode of Flight of the Conchords, which (like most episodic tv shows) managed to waste the talents of the pretty funny Jim Gaffigan. No amount of dreamy/creepy Mel musical numbers can justify that crime.

And, of course, what we're really talking about here is SNL sucking hard for yet another week. We partially blame host Bradley Cooper, who try as a certain strain of hipster/comedy nerd girl might, will never, ever be Paul Rudd. There's too much sublimated anger in his roles -- heck, in his eyebrows -- for him to be genuinely carefree or amusing. This is why, as he alluded to in his monologue, he plays douches.

But clearly the people who are most to blame are SNL's writers, who -- to say nothing of Cooper, a newbie -- two weeks ago handed Steve Martin (who we kind of thought was a lock on this show) a real stinker, and who, we are estimating, have a 50/50 shot at doing the same to similarly bankable host Alec Baldwin this coming weekend. We get how the political stuff would seem at least unfocused in this, the less antagonistic age of Obama, but what's up with every other sketch being about someone annoying? Kathie Lee, that couple with the pump noises... Seems like the go-to bit these days is "Kristin Wiig is someone weird," which when that someone is Bjork, gives Wiig -- who is a comedienne and mimic of copious talents and who, for the time being at least, is the clearly show's MVP -- a chance to shine. But too often the characters are all similar -- the halting delivery, the staring into camera, the mom jokes. Enough already, guys. Less Molly Shannon, more Jan Hooks!

No, Seriously: Darrell Hammond Is Now A Bad Guy On "Damages"

In case you guys missed it last week -- or heard but were pretty sure it was total bullshit, ha ha, they wouldn't seriously do that, huh? -- and plan on watching Damages tonight, we warn you: Saturday Night Live cast member ("regular" hardly seems like an accurate term) Darrell Hammond is now playing some sort of evil, creepy lackey on the show. Oh, did we say "evil, creepy"? We meant "Damages obviously doesn't care anymore." Video after the jump.

OK, now, we know what you're going to say -- last season's evil, creepy guy was played by Doug from Flight of the Conchords, and he's funny, right? True. But Doug was nice enough to grow a beard and wear plaid, code for menacing weirdo (or hipster). Darrell Hammond looks like he's doing a lazy impression of a 90's movie serial killer on an overheated soundstage and having trouble with the concept of not reading his lines of cur cards in the process. Like, we don't buy this for a second. OK, he had another, slightly more convincing scene later on in last week's episode, but still...

This does not bode well for Damages, which we found entrancing and unnerving last year but this year has so far failed to grab our attention much. The urgency of last year's plot, with Ellen accused of a crime and digging her way out in flashback, has yet to be matched with any of this William Hurt business. What's more, we find ourselves completely uninterested in whatever secrets Patty Hewes has buried in her past. Wasn't this the problem with all those late books about Hannibal Lecter -- they filled in the blanks that made the character initially interesting?

After all the hulabaloo and protestations, SNL and Elisabeth Moss' fiancee went back to the David Paterson well Saturday - with hysterical results. Fred Armisen's bumbling Paterson delivers punchlines like a bad Borscht Belt comic, insults New Jersey, knocks into Seth Meyers, and says "I am a bad Governor", and nary a word can be heard from the real-life blind Governor, who perhaps would like to hide a little bit after the mess he made of that Senate appointment:

Kevin, Nick and Joe will be giving fans the ultimate Valentine's Day gift by performing live on Saturday Night Live. They will be the musical guest on the Feb. 14 episode...Their SNL debut comes around the same time as the brothers plan to announce the dates of their world tour. The stops will be announced as early as mid-February, they said in their blog.

Meanwhile, Valentine's Day also marks what we've begun calling Alec Baldwin's magic episode: It's his 14th time hosting SNL, and it falls on the 14th of the month. We're going to the play the lottery that day.

By the way, the last celebrity to host SNL on a Valentine's Day was Drew Barrymore in 2004 with musical guest, Kelis. We love a google search.

MTV News just interviewed SNL's Lonely Island guys - responsible for the classic digital shorts Dick In A Box and Jizz In My Pants - and asked Jorma Taccone, Akiva Schaffer, and Andy Samberg what they thought might be the secret of their success. "Everyone has a dong," said Andy. "Men and women. Everyone has a dong." Akiva quickly clarified: "As we understand it."

Yay! But damn, everybody just found out they're dating. Couldn't they have waited a little while for the media to get adjusted?

We believe in the marriage of Moss and Armisen, despite the 16-year age difference. (He's 42, she's 26.) And Elisabeth Moss is clearly crazy about Fred Armisen:

"It happened just a few days ago," Moss just told usaweekend.com. "It's private, so I don't want to share the details of how it happened, but I will say it was perfect."

They're going out! And were spotted canoodling! We just really wanted to type the word "canoodling"!

According to the New York Post's Page Six, Fred Armisen of SNL and Elisabeth Moss of Mad Men were totally making out at the Vanity Fair Mad Men party. This was no random hookup, either: Moss was described as Armisen's "new girlfriend." So we did a little e-research, and discovered that indeed, Armisen and Moss are an item, and they like to play "Rock Band" together . Yes! Score one for funny dorks! We like this couple, a lot. Yes, we have previously complained about Armisen's Obama, but when Fred is not doing Barack (we mean in a comedic way, don't start no rumors) he's probably the funniest thing about the current SNL. And Moss is an amazing actress, insanely good in Mad Men. She deserves a funny dude like Fred Armisen, especially after all the Piven nonsense she's had to put up with on Speed The Plow. This is a lot of talent in one couple. Although we have to take issue with Page Six's surprise that "a shlumpy guy like Fred Armisen could pull babes." Fred Armisen is a funny musician on TV. Don't be so shocked.

Is the SNL/Mark Wahlberg “Say Hello To Your Mother” Thing Actually Getting Funnier?

Answer: Yes. Really way back when (in October of the year 2008) the “Mark Wahlberg Talks to Animals” sketch first aired on Saturday Night Live, we weren’t huge fans. We thought to ourselves: “why is he with all those damn animals” and “what in the sam F does that mean?” and “why does he keep talking about that donkey’s mother?” (Insert Tracy Morgan's Brian Fellows intonation here).

But after Mark Wahlberg, (producer, animal talker, nose cracker extraordinaire) began responding to the sketch, the whole thing began to snowball into an abominable force of inexplicable funny.

Now, even Mark’s posse (the original Entourage) wants to get in on the joke . . .

After SNL aired yet another ‘hello to your mother’ bit this weekend with Neil Patrick Harris of How I Met Your Mother, TMZ caught Mark outside of a Los Angeles Restaurant with one of his boys. Wahlberg’s anonymous dude-friend actually bid Marky Mark adieu with a glib “say hello to your mother for me.” Ha! Also, Mark makes some thinly veiled threats that include busting the paparazzi in the face. What’s funnier than that?
