Craig Ferguson Beats Jimmy Fallon

In the ratings. For the very first time.

It was only by an eyelash, but the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson topped Late Night with Jimmy Fallon in total viewers for the first time.

Ferguson's show also tied Fallon's in adults 25 to54 years-of-age for the first time, according to Nielsen live plus same day ratings for the week ending May 8.

The Late Late Show drew 1.87 million viewers to CBS, up 7% in viewers (from 1.74 million) compared to the same week last year.

Late Night with Jimmy Fallon drew 1.867 million viewers.

Oh, this late late night battle, she's on now. Lick that for $10, Jimmy Fallon...

He's finally getting his college degree from St. Rose in Albany tomorrow, 15 years after he left for L.A. one semester short of graduating. And, though he was tardy to the diploma, he'll be speaking at graduation. Good thing he's a college graduate now, or he'll never amount to anything. Of course, Jimmy Fallon didn't have to go to Albany for that final semester - he just submitted a portfolio of his work as famous guy Jimmy Fallon. Our dropout buddy who works in retail tried the same thing with no luck.

Turns out Fallon started college as a computer science major - which explains "Nick Burns, Computer Guy"...

The thing is, we haven't been that big a fan of Jimmy Fallon as the new host of Late Night. Actually, that's an understatement. We find him actively annoying and unfunny, which is strange given that we always enjoyed him on say, Weekend Update. Then last night, we really thought things might turn around. We figure if Amy Poehler and the Y Tu Mamá También boys (best bromance ever, no?) could make Jimmy funny, then all would not be lost. Tragically, it was not to be...

Seriously, that might have been the worst interview we've ever seen in our lives, not counting the time Craig Kilborn spent fifteen minutes pursuing a line of questioning about Jennie Garth's OCD underwear drawer. That's it, Jimmy. We're over it. Just wanted you to know.

Honestly, Webby Awards? Jimmy Fallon? The Person Of The Year for the whole Internet? Wow. Because from what we've been told about this Internet by the 12-year-old who posts transcriptions of our fountain-penned notes on parchment, these Webs are World Wide, and there are many virtual people caught in them.

Although, if we're going to give credit, the Late Night With Jimmy Fallon website is much better than the Late Night With Jimmy Fallon show. Which is itself much better than we expected.

After viewing this clip, we've decided categorically that much as we love her, Jennifer Aniston must never have her own talk show. So, you know, J. Aniston can just kiss that dream goodbye since, obviously, our word is law on these matters...

We're actually less amused by Jennifer's renegade hosting stint, and more so by her description of her past clubbing wardrobe. Perhaps if she'd shown up to this interview wearing only ripped tights, a bra and a police hat, she could've knocked the whole interview out of the park.

This Late Night With Jimmy Fallon petition for a Saved By The Bell reunion is totally working. On Friday night's Fallon, AC Slater made a surprise appearance...

We'd like to take this opportunity to say Late Night With Jimmy Fallon is not nearly as bad as we expected it to be, despite the constant and infuriating product placement. Fallon naturally skews younger than any of the other late-night hosts, which is good, and now that Fallon's worked on that sweating problem, his show has a loose vibe - more than any other late-night show, Late Night With Jimmy Fallon kinda just feels like you're hanging out with Jimmy Fallon.

And surprisingly, hanging out with Jimmy Fallon is not an altogether unpleasant experience.

Now that Jimmy Fallon's taking over Conan's Late Night gig, we enjoy picturing him swaggering around town humming the "King of New York" song from Newsies under his breath. Maybe sometimes he actually breaks out in song and starts dancing on tables and spinning from ceiling fans, yelling, "Ain't I pretty? It's my city! I'm the king of New York!" We like to think this is the very behavior that got him into a fistfight before getting bounced from a NY pizza place Saturday night...

Apparently, Jimmy and his wife were just hanging out with the kids, enjoying a slice or two, when they were unceremoniously ejected from the premises. Although there are rumors that the incident came to blows, Jimmy's own account of the incident via Twitter is vague at best:

Dude, seriously?

You'll have done 25 shows, Jimmy. 25. It's not time for a breather yet.

In Fallon's defense (and so many people pick on this guy we feel he kinda needs a defender) everybody in late night is on vacation next week. Letterman, Leno, Ferguson, and Kimmel are all airing repeats, because sweeps were in March this year, and it's tradition to break after sweeps. But they actually have shows to repeat. And isn't that all the more reason for the new guy to air new shows? This is your chance to be the man, Jimmy. Don't waste that chance playing beer pong in Cancun. Unless, of course, you plan on filming the beer pong for future episodes.

On Late Night With Jimmy Fallon. Dammit, this is the second or third time recently we've found ourselves smiling and/or chuckling at something on Fallon. Aside from all the promo bull (if he says "Bud Light Lime" one more damn time...) might this show become kinda okay? We may be starting to sorta like him a little sometimes. God, that was hard to admit. This is turning our world upside down, and causing us to question everything we believe in.

Anyway, we're not telling you who wins, but we will take your bets. Okay, you might want to put your money on the cute tennis player who couldn't really play tennis, over the cute comedian who's never really been funny...

There are fans and then there are Fans. This Jimmy Fallon audience member? He’s an effing Fan.

Here’s what happened: Fanboy was lucky enough to have a moment backstage with Morrissey. He met the man, pulled up his shirt sleeve to reveal a skinny, pale, untattooed shoulder, whipped out what we can only imagine to be an extra thick Sharpie, and asked Morrissey to sign his arm. Morrissey complied. Then, Chris (the superfan’s name is Chris Gethard) proceeded to have the following exchange with his friend (confusingly also named Chris).

"I have to get that tattooed on my body, right?" I say.

Then Chris says the best thing ever to me.

"Well, your only other option is to not get it tattooed on your body, and you're not doing that."

And that is how last night I came to get Morrissey's child-like signature permanently drawn on to my right shoulder.

Wow. Here’s the hard evidence:

Questions:

1. Why wouldn’t you tell Morrissey it was going to be a tattoo, give the man a chance to make his signature a little less like a first grader’s second attempt at pressing his or her name onto paper?

2. Was the sharpie a deliberate choice? We actually enjoy its aesthetic effect.

3. Can you get a few more tattoos so it looks a little less like you have an unhealthy and excessive obsession with Morrissey? We think it will help in the date department. We’re just saying.

Statler & Waldorf stopped by Late Night With Jimmy Fallon on Friday. We love these two. They’re hardcore; their skepticism is stifling. You just know that if you met them in a dark alley they’d call your very worth as a human into question while pelting you with those rotten tomatoes. And that’s what we look for in a puppet team.

See if Statler & Waldorf took Jimmy to the alley (so to speak) after the jump:

Statler & Waldorf were decent . . . but Fallon, isn’t it a bad idea to feature heckling puppets when your show’s not quite hilarious yet? That’s not an insult. We just think that Jimmy’s still trying to find his thang. Does he stick to young facebook humor? How should he treat political stuff? Is it cool to slow jam the news? Are those new suits working for him? Everything’s still up in the air. Stat & Waldorf could’ve crushed young Jimmy in these uncertain times. Luckily the Muppets went easy on him. Next time Fallon, you better be ready for the back alley treatment.

Also, is it just us, or is the staff-induced audience applause semi-ridiculous. We can practically hear Jimmy’s interns waving strips of carmelized bacon at the front row while mouthing “laugh, you idiots”. . .

What? We’d laugh for sugar coated bacon.

Tracy Morgan appears on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon tonight, which won't be as comfy for Fallon as you might think. See, even though Jimmy Fallon and Tracy Morgan worked together on SNL, they are not BFF's. Or don't you remember what Tracy said about Jimmy in the October 2007 issue of Penthouse?

The "30 Rock" star tells the October issue of Penthouse that his castmates were bothered during skits by Fallon's "laughing and all that dumb [bleep] he used to do - he wouldn't mess with me because I didn't [bleep]ing play that s - - t. That's taking all the attention off of everybody else and putting it on you, like, 'Oh, look at me, I'm the cute one.' I told him not to do that s - - t in my sketches, so he never did."

Oh dip. Tracy must have seen how harsh that sounded, so he was softening his remarks a couple weeks later, in an interview with The Onion's A.V. Club:

It wasn't meant to be malicious or anything, just an observation. It was annoying to everybody, I guess. I just said it. I don't know if he knew he was doing it. I don't have anything against Jimmy Fallon. I love Jimmy Fallon. He's my dude.

Aw, Tracy shouldn't have made nice. We want a battle. No violence, mind you; we'd just love to see them both come out with their guns blazing in a comedy shootout. We suspect The Greatest Talk Show Guest Alive would be the only one left standing.

And far be it from us to question JT’s judgment . . . after all that is a picture of the former mouseketeer getting freaked by the queen bee (no, not Lil Kim), Madonna herself.

But his new show, MTV’s The Phone looks kinda wack . . .

Nymag.com says the show:

Revolves around contestants who receive a spooky call on an anonymous cell phone that just happens to be in their immediate vicinity. The contestants then receive a series of instructions from a poor man's Jigsaw instructing them to complete some sort of The Mole meets Punk'd–type of mission.

So, surprise, surprise, we’re a bit, how shall we say . . . less than impressed. If JT pitched us a show about a dance off, (you know, dance battling for dollars, street style) we’d be ready. We’ve been waiting for a reality TV adaptation of You Got Served (only the best movie, evah). We love America’s Best Dance Crew, but there’s always room for JT to improve on Randy Jackson’s model. And if he tried, we’d be down like Julie Brown. But no, instead we get to watch wide-eyed teens solve ambiguous Hardy Boys mysteries that involve exploding BMWs.

Jimmy Fallon Was Way More Lenoish Than We'd Expected

We're tempted to call Jimmy Fallon's first night hosting Late Night something of a disaster, seeing as how the jokes weren't very funny and the guests all seemed to have canned bits rather than interviews and Jimmy was basically just as "hey my famous friends are here" as we had feared. However, we are not without a certain amount of charity, and we remember what it's like first day on the job, so we won't call Late Night anything just yet. In fact, we'll refrain from doing any labeling of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon until the next time we see it. Whenever that is.

But we do want to note one thing: how incredibly like The Tonight Show with Jay Leno it all was, and how utterly unlike Conan O'Brien or David Letterman. For one thing, Jay and Jimmy share a rambling, muttery sort of delivery, which in other performers might come off as creepy, but from the two of them comes off as just wanting to be liked. And that whole "Lick It For Ten" game -- yeah, right out of the Letterman playbook, but without any of the angular weirdness or agressive curiousity that Letterman brings to that sort of game, it was basically an extension of all those interchangably amiable "people on the street" bits that Leno pulls out.

Really, we know, this sounds like a criticism -- and ok, maybe it is. But we mention it because it was all so starkly unlike Dave and Conan, and so much like Jay, and to some degree even Carson (Daly, not Johnny), that it must have been a conscious decision on the part of Jimmy, Lorne Michaels, someone, to tone down the Late Night-ness of the whole affair. OK, it's clear this is actually becoming a criticism, so here goes -- what's the point of having 12:30 at all if it looks just like 11:30? There, that's all we're gonna say for now.

So, will this surprising middle-of-the-road-ness last? Maybe; hard to imagine Jimmy going for any of the genuine weirdness of his predecessors without a determined writer to lead him there, as Robert Smigel so notably did with Conan. But maybe A.D. Miles has some oddball stuff up his sleeve? Watch any of the DVD extras to the movies that he's appeared in and you get the sense that he's some sort of comedy dynamo -- he practically makes Amy Poehler wet herself in the Wet Hot American Summer extras -- so who knows. Or maybe, just maybe, Jimmy and Lorne and NBC have really decided to let Conan keep his weirdness, as he hinted at in his farewell, and they figure Leno and Fallon should be matching bookends for the brand new, Masturbating Bear-featuring Tonight Show. Or maybe we're just thinking about this too much.

Aw, who are we kidding -- Tina Fey's on Fallon tomorrow, we'll totally catch that.

Hint: he's a notoriously difficult interview....

Jimmy's first guest will be Robert De Niro, who, despite being a living legend, is kind of old. Is this the way to become the young, hip 21st-century talk show host? By having an actor on who did his best work over a quarter-century ago? We're not the only ones to notice this is kind of weird. Besides which, De Niro is famous for being a difficult interview; he'd much rather act than talk about acting - or, for that matter, talk about anything. Even with a top-notch interviewer like Charlie Rose, there are always a lot of one-world answers, some nodding and smiling. He's not Joaquin Phoenix, but he isn't exactly expansive. Of course, DeNiro's been on SNL, and Fallon does a (cute but not very good) DeNiro impression.

So that could be funny. Or annoying. regardless, the musical guest for Jimmy's first show is Van Morrison - again, huge talent, living legend, old man. What is this? Yes, both Van Morrison and Robert de Niro are notoriously publicity-shy, so these are great "gets." But they're not necessarily great guests, especially for a show that, presumably, is framing itself as the next generation of late night. Plus, check out Fallon's guest list for the whole first week:

**Thursday, March 5 – Guests include Donald Trump, Serena Williams, and musical guest Ludacris

**Friday, March 6 – Guests include Drew Barrymore and Mario Batali

One funny person that whole first week - Tina Fey. Which signals that producers think Fallon can carry the comedic load. This seems like a bad move - why not have a few comedians on to ease the burden? The weakest part of this show will probably be the interviews - it always is when these things start out. So why not bring in people who make those interviews easier and funnier? Jon Stewart. Stephen Colbert. Amy Sedaris. Dave Chappelle. Adam Sandler. Demetri Martin. Will Ferrell. Chris Rock. Steve Carell. Amy Poehler. Flight Of The Conchords. The Lonely Island Guys. Matt Stone and Trey Parker. Sascha Baron Cohen and Isla Fisher together. Any of these people would have been good guests the first week, to get people laughing. This guest list seems like a recipe for a whole lot of awkward moments.

His name is A.D. Miles, and though he looks like he's about to go into sophomore year at Princeton, he's actually 37 years old. This picture is from 2008. Swear. Don't know what A.D. Miles is eating, or what products he's using, but we want some. Seriously. Here's another picture, from October. You're supposed to look at the eyes for clues about the age. Okay, that makes him about 23. Anyway, he's now the person most responsible for making Fallon funny night-in and night-out on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon. If you recognize A.D. Miles, it might be from the short-lived 2006 Comedy Central series Dog Bites Man. Or his small part in last year's Role Models, with Paul Rudd and Sean William Scott. Or, if you're all up on the internets, the popular web series Horrible People, for which he is creator, writer, director, and star. Check out the very funny premiere ep of Horrible People, which costars the always delightful Kristen Schaal (aka Mel from Flight Of The Conchords):

We've run the gamut of emotions on Jimmy Fallon as a late-night talk show host already - and his show doesn't even start until March 2nd. On the one hand, Fallon (who will be on Late Night With Conan O'Brien tonight) is a guy we want to root for: he's earnest, excited, and kind of sweet. On the other hand, he's a bit of a douchebag, as these quotes clearly illustrate. Talking to W Magazine for their March issue, Fallon said

Watching David Letterman after 9/11, I was like, 'Wow, that's exactly how I feel,' And hopefully I can be a voice of America like that; hopefully people will say, 'I wonder what Jimmy Fallon thinks.'

"I wonder what Jimmy Fallon thinks"? How about "I wonder if Jimmy Fallon will be funny?" Why don't you concentrate on that, Fallon, take it one step at a time. Fallon must have realized how douchebaggy that sounded, because he continued thusly:

When it's like, 'Jimmy Fallon's a douchebag,' what am I gonna do? I don't wanna be one. But I don't know what to do differently to make that guy like me.

Be funny, Jimmy. Just be funny. Do that, and everything else can come later.

We previously wrote about how everyone is skeptical about Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, and how classy Craig Ferguson defended Jimmy Fallon against the skeptics. And, we got to say, though Jimmy Fallon sure does giggle at his own jokes and play with his hair a lot, and that makes everybody want to preeemptively make fun of him, Ferguson's right. Let's give the kid a chance. (We can call Jimmy Fallon a kid because everyone here at the Remote Island is a senior citizen.) After all, he did get one hell of a house band. And now his new home, Studio 6B, will be of the first entirely green, eco-friendly TV studios. "Everything is recycled," says Fallon. Well, hopefully not the jokes.

Craig Ferguson came to the defense of future late-night rival Jimmy Fallon, saying

He's kind of like the reverse Barack Obama. He hasn't done anything yet, but everybody says he's doing it wrong. Give Jimmy a month before you review him. That would be fair, I think.

Very classy. Craig Ferguson goes on to make a very good point:

With these shows, nobody knows how you're going to do. And let's be honest - who thought I would be sitting here today (after) four years?

So true. After all, everybody was all kids of excited about The Chevy Chase Show , and that didn't go so well. Mostly because it was spectacularly bad.

Craig Ferguson, on the other hand, is very good - smart, funny, classy, and uncompromising, as this clip clearly shows:
