Shades of Grey's Anatomy: Beautiful Day To Save Lives, And Yet Everything's Going To Hell

Season finale Friday, guys. Get psyched...

Lindy-High: Strange but true, we have two highs this week. First, Christina declaring her love to Owen over the air vents. Loved it. Second, Meredith discovering George was the unrecognizable John Doe bus guy. We can't believe we're saying this, but the second hour of this finale was actually a surprisingly good time for us -- sort of like Grey's of yore when Meredith and Christina Ricci had their hands on a bomb in an open body cavity, or when George delivered Bailey's baby. Mostly, our high was that the writing of this episode all made sense and kept our eye-rolling to a minimum. Welcome back to sort-of-awesome Shonda Rhimes.

Olivia-High: Alex Karev. Because homeboy spends most of his time as a snarky asshole, we love seeing him yell and cry. We love it. There's something about a manly man breaking down that does it for us. He makes us want Izzie to survive. Which is quite the feat. Job well done, Karev.

Lindy-Low: Dr. Bailey re-cycling the I-can't-move-forward-in-my-career-or-my-husband-will-divorce-me plotline. We've been here before, and we're over it. Apparently, Dr. Bailey is too because she's divorcing Tucker. Truthfully, we most enjoy Dr. Bailey when she's shepherding the interns-turned-residents along the rocky landscapes of their lives and careers. Let's get back to that, no?

Olivia-Low: Meredith could not be more annoying with this marriage shit. Although we will admit that the Meredith-Christina moment, the declaration of love between two friends, was almost too sweet for words, we really still want to smack her every time she speaks. We watch a show every week that makes us want to hit someone, hard. That's unhealthy.

It's Friday, and there's a wedding happening. Here's our highs and lows...

Lindy-High: The wedding switch. Yeah, we said it. We don't care what you say. When Izzie couldn't quite make it down the aisle, and suddenly George was there, with his "take my hand." Dude, we teared up. Just a little. And then Alex used the dead valedictorian's speech from the ER as his vows. Also, P.Demp pushing the boundaries of modern medicine yet again to pinpoint Izzie's hallucinations -- we were loving it. Then again, maybe we're just happy to say goodbye to Dr. Mcpouty, self-doubting, tequila-drinker.

Olivia-High: Gotta agree with Remote Lindy. We got all choked up during that damned wedding scene. And the wedding dress. It turned out well, no? One might argue that Katherine Heigl and Ellen Pompeo are not the same size, but we're willing to suspend our disbelief and pretend that Seattle Grace has a tailor on staff specifically for these kinds of alteration emergencies.

Lindy-Low: We're more than a little uncomfortable with Izzie's wedding obsession, but that's not really our low. No, for that we go to Arizona Robbins. OMG, Kate Capshaw. How we despise you. There are people arriving in the ER cut in half, and you're whining and distracting Callie from, you know, saving lives. And once again, why are we acting like Callie doesn't have a paycheck? Is she a pro bono surgeon? No, right? She doesn't have med school debt because, presumably, her father paid for it. She's out of debt and she's been getting a SURGEON'S paycheck for years. Granted, when you lose your trust fund, you probably adjust your lifestyle a bit, but we never got the impression that Callie was all prada bags and private jets anyway. And she lives in Seattle, not Tokoyo -- we're guessing she can still afford a hundred dollar dinner or two. Just saying.

Olivia-Low: For this low, we need to have a heart to heart moment with Dr. Owen Hunt.

Dear O,

Can we call you O? We thought so. Listen, O, we still like you. We still like you even though you tried to kill Christina in a PTSD-induced shit-fit. We appreciate the fact that you are going to therapy. You're trying to get better and make up for your wrong doing. Kudos to you. Hip-hip-hooray, buddy. That said, we do not appreciate you touching Christina, trying to hold her hand, approaching her in any way. PTSD or not, you tried to choke her out. If she wants to hold your throat-throttling hands, she'll let you know. For now, back off mister. We'll be watching.

Is this some sort of weird taunt? Oh, hold on, let's see if Wikipedia can help us out:

Leigh has said that she and her husband have a pact in which the person who guesses the baby's gender correctly gets to choose the name. When pregnant with Noah, she guessed she was having a boy so she chose the first name and Nathan gave him his middle name. For Taelyn, Nathan correctly guessed it was a girl, so he named her. Their third child, also a girl, was guessed correctly by West; he will choose the name.

Well, if that's true, then it's all this guy's fault. Regardless, we wish you and your unfortunately named child all the joy in the world.

The countdown to the season finale is on, people. Here's this week's highs and lows...

Lindy-High: Not to sound overly macabre, but we kind enjoyed the way six year old girl who shot her father 17 times, sounded a bit like the spawn of Satan when she said, "Why my daddy don't die? I shot him a bunch of times" in a cold, dispassionate voice. We were creeped out, but in that sort of funny way. And anyway, we couldn't feel that moved by their situation because it seems implausible at best that a six year old could get 17 shots off without someone stopping her.

Olivia-High: Sharon Lawrence guest-stars as Izzie's mother this week. She plays overbearing trailer park mama like it's her job. And she kind of blew Katherine Heigl off the screen. Truly, Sharon was everything that we wish Izzie could be on a weekly basis: Idealistic, a bit narcissistic, sweet, funny, teary, and a scosh trashy. For our taste, she could have trashed it up even more. What? We like our ladies rough around the edges.

Lindy-Low: Meredith screaming at a battered wife in the emergency room. Really, it's getting to the point where we have to fast forward through all of Meredith's scenes. Lots of people have difficult lives, Mer. Get your shit together. On an unrelated note, is it realistic that a highly-respected bone surgeon wouldn't get paid enough to afford her Seattle rent without a trust fund? We're not really buying this Callie Torres plotline.

Olivia-Low: Dr. Hunt pours some random, granular substance into his patient's open wounds to stop the bleeding. Hooray for Dr. Hunt (and the patient) that his little sack of sugar worked. But, did anyone else notice that the shit he put into the patients gaping torso is not "FDA approved?" Hunt just throws some random war contraband into a patient. Is that okay? Are we okay with that? And why is that powder in his truck in a green duffel bag? Does he feel as though he might need wound-glue at the gym?

There's a wedding website for the Meredith Grey/Derek Shepherd nuptials - and an invitation to RSVP for the fictional event got 1,400 replies in the first 24 hours.

The website is the brainchild of series creator Shonda Rhimes and written by the Grey's writers, although the credit for creating and maintaining it goes to cancer-y Izzie Stevens - who is, of course, also a made-up person. Is RSVP-ing to a fake wedding invitation made by a fake TV character the new screaming at your television? There's even a gift registry page - but in lieu of buying gifts for the fake couple, you can donate to three very real charities: The American Academy Of Neurology Foundation, The American Skin Association, and the Alzheimer's Association.

Grey's is back, y'all. And we have some thoughts...

Lindy-Low: Meredith using the word "cancer-y" repeatedly to describe Izzie's body parts. Also, we're conflicted about Dr. Bailey's pediatrics fellowship -- obviously, the scene of her rocking a dying child could've enticed Jack Palance to shed a tear, but we have a hard time letting go of Miranda as the unofficial Chief of Surgery that holds everything together.

Olivia-Low: Izzie crying wolf nearly sent us into an actual coniption fit in front of the television. Literally twice "cancer-y" Iz pretends to slip into the hereafter so that Meredith will play bridal barbie with her. Then she giggles. Giggles! We thought the threat of death would make us like her more. It doesn't.

Lindy: High: Callie's Spanish ranting, the return of the Mark Sloan/Callie Torres BFFship, and Hector Elizondo (on whom we have a May-December crush). Also, at one point when that father was holding his child during her last seconds of life, we turned to our boyfriend and said, "The Mighty Ducks guy is really bringing it home for us."

Olivia-High: Meredith in those hideous wedding dresses. Obvi, we can't stand Meredith, and tend to curse under our breath every time she's on screen whinning her Meredith whine. But the sight of her whiny grimacing face atop pounds upon pounds of beaded white lace and chiffon made us smile. In other news (yes, we have two highs!), the George O'Malley/Alex Karev dynamic is kind of fun, no? They hate each other, but they're growing to respect one another, and in the face of Izzie's slow bridal march to death (fingers crossed!) they need each other. Although we categorically abhor the phrase bro-mance and any derivations thereof, we can't wait for these two to get bromantical.

Spring Cleaning: ABC Gets Their Fall Lineup in Order

ABC's cleaning house and getting themselves organized for the Fall '09 season. For the most part they seem to be going with a "better safe than sorry" strategy -- not a lot of surprises in the group. The question is, will any of this seasons fledgling shows (Castle, The Unusuals, Better Off Ted) make the cut?

Here's the breakdown of renewed shows thus far...

Dancing with the Stars -- Before we actually watched an episode (i.e. the first seven seasons), we never understood the appeal of this show. But, it has to be said, after watching half a dozen episodes this season, we kind of understand. However, please don't ask us to explain it, because we can't.

The Bachelor -- which we are never watching again.

Grey's Anatomy -- At this point Grey's Anatomy is sort of like that relative that you used to be close to when you were kids, and even though you now find you have nothing in common anymore, you still stay in touch.

Desperate Housewives -- Truthfully, we gave up on ever watching Desperate Housewives back in the first season when we tried to watch an episode and had to force ourselves to stay interested in the characters. No show should be that much work. ABC sort of agrees with us. DH creator Marc Cherry wanted a Lost-esque four season contract, but ABC stuck with a "let's just see how it goes" response.

Brothers & Sisters -- You'll never hear us complaining about more time with the Walkers.

Ugly Betty -- We feel like Ugly Betty is like ABC's high school girlfriend that they married right out of college and after a few years decided they wanted someone new and exciting like In The Motherhood, only to realize (after sleeping with someone else lost it's novelty), that Ugly Betty was what they wanted all along.

Private Practice -- Even though we don't exactly love Private Practice, we're happy to see it renewed, mostly because we can't bear the thought of another Taye Diggs show getting cancelled.

Lost -- Not exactly a renewal since the Islanders are still fulfulling their previous contract from 2007.

Extreme Makeover: Home Edition -- We've been a bit disenchanted with this show for a while -- ever since we started suspecting that the goal of the makeovers might be more about wowing the viewing audience with a gargantuan new house, rather than building one that's suited to the family in question.

Supernanny -- We try to stay away from shows that make us feel this stressed out about having kids.

Wife Swap -- Ditto.

America's Funniest Home Videos -- How in God's name is this show still on the air? Who watches it? If you're out there, raise your hand so we can see you.

As for the maybes...

Absent from the list: ABC's entire freshman class, including struggling midseason efforts such as "The Unusuals," "Better Off Ted," "Castle" and "In the Motherhood" as well as import "Scrubs."

Of the new shows, only "Castle" has shown enough spark for likely consideration. And ABC still has plenty of time to add more shows to this list between now and their upfront presentation to advertisers next month. (The Hollywood Reporter)

We're sort of depressed by this news since we thought Castle was largely disappointing, whereas we could actually see ourselves getting into The Unusuals. Hmmmm. Might be time to start another feverish letter-writing campaign to ABC network executives.

Good news for George O'Malley fans who may have been suffering a bit of depression over the fact that T.R. Knight's role has basically been reduced to a glorified extra this season. Co-star Kevin McKidd (aka Dr. McPTSD) teases a few details from an upcoming O'Malley-centric episode...

All we can say is, thank God. How long could we really have endured George wandering around in the background, occasionally handing someone a chart? On an unrelated note: Are we the only ones who sort of wish Kevin McKidd would use his real accent on the show? Problematic for his role as an American soldier, but still.

It seems Shonda Rhimes is hard at work, piecing together the Grey's Anatomy finale. The latest addition to the interesting crew of guest stars? The Big Bang Theory star Kaley Cuoco...

"I am working on Grey's Anatomy next week," she confirmed. "It is a big ol' secret. I have no clue what I am doing. I swear on my life that I have no idea what I am playing because it is the finale and they are keeping it under wraps until the last possible moment."
"They called me directly last week and asked if I would do a part on the finale episode," she explains. "I didn't hesitate because I am a fan of the show, and it's a huge show so it's probably good for the career, too. And I haven't been able to do any drama in a long time.
"My guess is that I will be a patient of some kind," she continues. "I'm practicing my scared-sad-I'm-dying face." (EW.com)

We're both excited and perplexed by this mash-up of character actors: First, Liza Weil (Gilmore Girls) and Debra Mooney (Everwood) -- both quirky and deliciously snarky actors -- and now this blonde bombshell comedic actress? We'll admit it, we're intrigued. And anyway, the more guest stars there are, the less time we'll have to spend listening to Meredith, right? Win/win.

Two things...

First of all, why can't Ellen Pompeo's hair ever look like this on Grey's Anatomy? Why must Meredith always traipse through the halls like a drowned rat in scrubs? Maybe it wouldn't be so bad if she wasn't always standing next to P.Demp and his impossibly thick locks that mock her split ends. Hey, Shonda Rhimes, can a girl get some volumizer up in here?

Second, hair troubles aside, it seems the new season of Grey's will feature Ellen Pompeo spending a lot time behind desks and surgery tables to hide her emerging baby bump...

Grey's Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo and her music producer husband, Chris Ivery, are expecting their first child together, Usmagazine.com has confirmed.
"It's a huge lifestyle change, and I take that very seriously," she told Allure magazine of motherhood. "We enjoy our life so much," Pompeo said in the October 2008 issue. "We go to Europe and sleep in. So when I have the baby, I won't feel like we've missed any fun, reckless times together, like staying up all night drinking champagne and having sex until five in the morning and not having to get up until two in the afternoon. But I've got to get on it, because the clock is ticking." (Us Magazine)

Well, good for her. Really. Aside from the fact that the idea of a brood of little Merediths running around the Seattle Grace halls with whiny voices and tiny heads of dull, lifeless hair makes us feel a little creeped out, we couldn't be happier about this news. Maybe the prenatal vitamins will put a little body in that coif.

"Gilmore Girls" Star Liza Weil Joins "Grey's Anatomy" Finale

We feel like with Liza Weil, best known for her work as Paris on Gilmore Girls, it's pretty much a love her or hate her situation. We fall on the side of love, and thus, couldn't be more thrilled to see her cast on the season finale of Grey's Anatomy...

Sources confirm to me exclusively that Rhimes has tapped...Gilmore Girls' Liza Weil, to guest star in the show's two-hour season finale on May 14...Weil will appear as a cancer patient who crosses paths with Izzie. (Ausiello Files)

We actually find this casting choice fitting for two reasons: First, it provides a nice Gilmore-Girls-slash-medical-drama symmetry since Rory Gilmore herself, Alexis Bledel played such a pivotal role in the ER series finale. Second, Weil's real-life husband Paul Adelstein plays Cooper on Private Practice. For those of you unfamiliar with the peculiar genius of Weil's run on Gilmore Girls, here's a little look back at one of our favorite scenes...

Did "ER" Take A Final Swipe At "Grey's Anatomy" With That Fractured Penis Scene? [VIDEO]

Not a bad final episode for ER, as far as those things go. We liked the callouts to the pilot episode, and the way the old cast and new were mostly cordoned off from each other. We were frankly worried that this would wind up being like Star Trek: Enterprise (Jesus, why does that show keep coming up?), which rather famously introduced characters from TNG in its final episode, and in the process either laid bare the prequel show's shortcomings or, if you were a fan, just plain disrespected it entirely.

None of that here. The old characters got most of the ceremonial stuff -- saying goodbye, being sad -- and the new characters went about their day/night, just like they would have in real life. So thumbs up to showrunner John Wells, for not writing an episode where County General closed and forced everyone to squeeze out a teary farewell. Pretty classy. (Oh, also: anyone else bummed that Alexis Bledel only got one episode? Someone get her back on TV, STAT!)

We do have one question, though, and it relates to something that wasn't classy, but was in fact -- if we are right about it -- fairly awesome. Wasn't it weird having a "fractured penis" gag in this episode, just weeks after Grey's Anatomy did the exact same thing?

For those of you who didn't see it, we're embedding here. Basically, an old guy comes into the ER and is all like "check out my penis, it hurts and also I have lots of septugenarian sex" and that Australian guy's all like "g'day, fractured penis" and then they schedule surgery. And that's it. Definitely not as soapy or acty as the scene in Grey's, which as you can see below, had a lot of "that character is a cad, isn't he?"-type emoting.

One final lesson from the old folks? If so: nice one, old folks.

Truthfully, we never thought a Grey's video game sounded like that good of a time. Maybe it could be fun if it was "Surgery for Wii" and you got to use the Wii remote to repair damage to a patient's frontal lobe while a P.Demp voiceover guided you through the steps. Actually, maybe the voiceover could be optional, and you could turn it off if you wanted more of a challenge. Sadly, it sounds like the actual Grey's video game is less "Surgery for Wii" and more Lame with a capital 'L'...

Yeah, Grey's Anatomy: The Video Game is superhumanly dull, and you control so little of the action it hardly feels like a game at all. Ostensibly, you pick the characters' actions -- Meredith wants to kiss Derek; should she just go for it, or play hard to get? No, really. But it seemed like no matter what I chose (Alex should be honest! Izzie should be bold!), the story progressed the same way, whether that was through honesty or boldness or not. I was even more disappointed with the lame-o surgery parts. Other than the really biological sound effects, the surgery was basically Dark Cut, sans irony. (EW.com)

Ouch. So it's basically a choose-your-own-adventure book, but boring? We have a better idea: "Grey's Anatomy Dodgeball for Wii" in which you can use your remote to lay out all your (least) favorite Grey's characters with blunt objects. We're just saying, if someone designed a game where we could hit Meredith in the face with a medicine ball, we'd hand over this month's rent. Maybe.

ABC Finally Pulls the Plug on "Lipstick Jungle"

Remember on last week's Grey's Anatomy when that older lady was given a month to live and then recovered miraculously, relapsed repeatedly, her family rushed to her bedside to say there goodbyes each and every time, and eventually they were just ready for her to hurry up and die so they could get to their board meeting? That's sort of how we feel about the long, slow demise of Lipstick Jungle...

Brooke Shields delivers the official news...

"It was going to stay and we just were officially told it's finally not coming back," Shields, who played movie exec Wendy Healy, told E! "I think a lot of people were really sad, but I think we hung on a really long time. It was three great years that we've been working on it."

Fine. Cool. No big surprise. Then, this...

"It literally just happened," Shields said. "We're all kind of reeling and trying to figure out what our next move is." (TV Guide)

You know all that stuff about Katherine Heigl leaving Grey's Anatomy? Well, she wants to make it perfectly clear none of that is her idea...

Attending a studio party to mark the ABC medical drama's 100th episode, Heigl said it's premature to think her days as Dr. Izzie Stevens are numbered.

"I was assuming that at one point and I got a lot of shrugged shoulders and shakes of the head, so I don't know if that's a yes or a no. No one will tell me and I don't know how this is going to go," Heigl said, noting series creator Shonda Rhimes' passion for plot secrecy.

"I don't know if I live or die. I don't know how Izzie fares," said the actress, who's played the character since the show debuted in 2005.

"I'm there" if Izzie remains part of "Grey's Anatomy," Heigl said. She called the set "one of my favorite places to be" and said her colleagues are also friends.

Stage IV metastatic cancer is a real bitch, huh? So, yeah, all that Heigl hullaballoo about not doing enough, and the whole movie star thing? Seriously, never mind all that. She didn't mean she wanted to die. Hey, it's a bad economy, keep your job if you can, Katherine Heigl.

Are you technically a battered woman if he's asleep the whole time? We're just wondering. Time for some highs and lows...

Lindy-High: Alex's voice-over! Yes. Awesome. No more Meredith. Can Alex do it every time? Also, Alex fertilized Izzie's frozen eggs without even thinking about it. Although, weird that the Chief pressured him into it, and then acted uncomfortable when Alex actually went through with it. Additionally, Christina and Owen are rocking our world despite the strange gregorian chant music during their sex scene. The last thirty seconds where Christina confessed to being afraid to fall asleep, and Owen went straight to Derek for a brain scan? We teared up a little bit.

Olivia-High: Callie dancing. We're still unsure about the chemistry between Sara Ramirez and Jessica Capshaw. But how much fun was Callie dancing? She's so cute and smily and pretty! Can we be friends with her? Can we watch teen movies and eat chocolate covered popcorn together? Can we text each other during Grey's episodes about how fab her hair looks and how ridiculous Lexipedia is? Please?

Lindy-Low: Meredith (MEREDITH?) going all judge-y on Christina's relationship with Owen. Girl, please. Hypocritical much? The real low is that our hatred of Meredith has grown so intensely that Derek's emotional elevator proposal failed to move us. Also, we're generally annoyed by Izzie's oncologist playing back-seat-surgeon while P.Demp was operating -- it's not okay to back-seat surge while someone's head is open.

Olivia-Low: We aggree with Remote Lindy on the back-seat surging. Unnacceptable behavior. We will pull this surgery over right now! But the real low for us is that we're pretty sure Kimberly Elise's guest potential is going to be thouroughly squandered with this heinous oncologist role. Kimberly's so good, and yet they're asking her to play a part that makes little to no sense. Would an oncologist really question the choices of a brain surgeon in the actual OR while he's poking at brain matter with sharp implements? Probably not. Would she insist on telling a patient terrible news just before a major surgery? Not unless the patient checked the Sadism box under Bedside manner when he or she was admitted to the hospital. We're pretty sure Izzie checked the coddling box. She likes to be coddled.

You heard it here, folks: OTH star Chad Michael Murray is on a one man crusade to save his job. Even though the CW created the show as a vehicle for him six years ago, times change, and it seems they're ready to show him the door. CMM isn't happy...

Here's the thing: after watching this video, we're pretty convinced that the bit about needing to save money was just a way for the CW to let Chad MIchael Murray down easy, and the real reason they don't want him back is actually because he's a colossal assclown. However, we've got to wonder if One Tree Hill can really work without CMM. Don't get us wrong, we have no actual love for he of the fluffy hair and perpetual squint, but we also think that to some degree the show revolves around him as the central figure. On the other hand, we're more than ready for them to kick Meredith's sempiternally whiny ass off of Grey's Anatomy, so we suppose anything's possible. Also, if the CW really is out to save money, couldn't they just replace CMM with a Sim?

Seriously, thank God it's Friday, y'all. Time for some highs and lows...

Lindy-High: We have three this week (Right? We can hardly believe it either). First, Meredith and George sorting through the new intern drama in a semi-amusing meta-narrative jab at the first two seasons. The best line of the episode for us was when Meredith told the interns off, and stormed out with George on her heels muttering, "That was very Bailey." Ha. We enjoyed that. Second, first Callie and then Dr. Hunt getting sucked into Derek's vortex of despair, drinking canned beers out of a cooler. Finally, the tender moment between the elderly orchid lady and the guy a hole in his face: "Please, don't call my dear friend ugly. You're a survivor." OMG, we teared up a little bit.

Olivia-High: Christina’s on-going quest to be the best character on this show. Her subtle crisis of conscience over what to do about Izzie’s brain cancer sitch was well-written and delivered. Were whiny Meredith in the same position, she would have slobbered and blubbered all over the situation, but good old Christina sucked it up and did what she had to do, all the while spouting hilariously perfect lines of sensible dialogue. Now if she and Hunt could just have at least a scene or two together, that power couple could take over this damn show.

And, Callie’s leather jacket. Really. It was great. It fit perfectly.

Lindy-Low: This scene...

We feel irritated. We do. We've grown to despise Izzie for so many reasons, but Christina's willingness to get on board and join the fight for Izzie's life has us rooting for her recovery in spite of ourselves. Sigh. We'll never be free of Izzie.

Olivia-Low: Little Lexopedia Grey openly macking on Dr. Gorgeous Sloan in the middle of the hospital (tongue fully lodged on the man’s tonsils) and then spewing some annoying “they think we’re ugly but I know we are beautiful,” crap. What? When did Seattle Grace become a Kelly Clarkson song? When???

So, Grey's is back. Think last night's episode was worth the wait? We have thoughts...

Lindy-High: The group analysis of P.Demp's Lucky Charms munching and generally foul state ("Sylvia Plath's eating all the marshmallows"). Also, Derek fungo-ing Meredith's engagement ring into the unknown. We're not sure why since Derek's general tantrum-throwing kind of made us want to die, but we like seeing Derek stick it to Meredith whenever we can. We still like Christina and Dr. Hunt, although we feel like their brief cameo-like appearances aren't enough to sink our teeth into.

Olivia-High: Alex Karev! Karev wins! He saves a little girl’s life and then calls her a band geek. Perfection. He’s so giddy about being called the “future of Seattle Grace” that he tells Izzie to get her act together so they can be the future together. We often want to tell Izzie to get her act together. Even though she’s dying.

Lindy-Low: Izzie's House-esque master class with the interns to determine her own illness. Question -- how many minutes of our lives did we lose this week watching the camera swing in a wide arc around Izzie staring off into space while the "something meaningful is happening" music plays. A dirge would've been more appropriate and funnier. You'd think since today's Friday the 13th more people would've died. Also, for God's sake, either fire T.R. Knight or give George more to do. The two times George was actually speaking were among the bright spots of last night's episode.

Olivia-Low: The chief of surgery throws foot-stomping eyebrow heaving temper tantrum in the operating room, in the middle of a surgery, over an open body cavity. For real? You’re really gonna pitch a fit over some body’s gaping torso? Gross and wrong, chief. Then, then, in response, Miranda Bailey tells him the hospital is falling apart because he needs to get in touch with his feminine side. Dear Miranda delivers this sage advice in a sassy rhythmic spoken word “now you listen here” rant. It’s awful. Like Lifetime television for preachy women meets a Terry McMillan novel. Awful.

What's happening, you ask? Good question...

According to TV Guide Canada, Justin Chambers (who plays Izzie's boyfriend and fellow doctor Alex Karev) said, "Izzie has cancer, so I'm there to support her...I would expect Alex to shut down a little bit if something awful happens to Izzie, but these are opportunities to see his chivalrous side and his true love for her, so there should be some interesting stuff coming up." (E! Online)

First of all, this isn't really news is it? Is there anyone out there who believed Shonda Rhimes when she vowed that Izzie didn't have a brain tumor? We assume she'll get around her blatant lies (ABC is a network of liars!) by moving Izzie's cancer to another region of her body -- ideally one that concerns a Seattle Grace surgeon's non-neuro specialty. Then again, maybe Justin Chambers is just speaking out of turn like Chief Jim Pickens or Greg Grunberg, and we can expect a full renegue of his statements tomorrow. We won't hold our breath.

First the Grey’s Anatomy incident. Now This.

ABC, Brothers & Sisters, We feel lied to . . .

[SPOILER ALERT]

A few weeks ago, ABC advertised the start of the Grey’s Anatomy/Private Practice crossover event. The start of said event consisted of a measly phone call. That’s not a crossover, that’s a phone call. This week, they’ve lied to us again.

You promised us a death, ABC! You advertised a 2-hour Brothers & Sisters movie event in which the Walkers would loose one of their own. We broke out the cheap merlot; we mixed our king-sized goobers with our jumbo bag of low-fat popcorn (the two balance each other out calorie-wise, and you still get that sweet-salty melty amazingness). And we tuned in.

But nobody died. That little SPOILER ALERT at the beginning of this post was just a courtesy warning (like a mattress tag . . . or a yellow light). Nothing really happens during this two hour “event.”

Well, to be fair, Robert has a heart attack (which he survives). Kitty’s adopted baby is born (adorable moments there, but no death). And Tommy’s illegal plot to take the family business back from Holly is discovered. We were hoping, beyond hope that Balthazar Getty’s character Tommy would get kilt this episode. Instead, He’s alive and conniving and sniveling, per usual. Perfect.

We guess we should be happy. If anybody was gonna die, it was going to be Robert McCallister, the beloved Rob Lowe. And god forbid Rob Lowe gets killed off. Then Dave Annable would have to hold up the hotness quota for the entire show. Don’t get us wrong, Dave would do okay . . .

Rob should stick around just in case. But we digress . . .

Back to the topic at hand: Lies, Lies, LIES! Nobody died, dammit.

Can ABC keep doing this? Can they keep advertising crossovers and deaths without coming through?

McDreamy Hangs Up His Scrubs For Good?

OMG, Derek wants to quit doctoring? Say it ain't so, P. Demp! Say it ain't so...

Grey's Anatomy is MIA for the next few weeks, but the ABC serial will return with a bang on March 12, when Derek decides to call it quits.
Already, of course, Dr. Shepherd is in a dark place, having made some questionable (and ultimately unsuccessful) calls in the treatment of a pregnant patient played by guest star Jennifer Westfeldt. Adding salt to that wound, he comes to discover that over his illustrious career, more patients of his died than he originally thought — prompting him to elect to hang up his stethoscope. (TV Guide)

Okay, here's the thing. We can't take this. We felt like we just got Derek back to normal after the crazy Eric Stolz debacle where McDreamy spent all his time waxing moralistic. If we're going to lose Derek, he HAS to take Meredith with him. We refuse to deal with Meredith's whining and slouching if Derek's not around to soften the blow. He can't really be leaving right? It has to be one of those personal-crisis-turned-idle-threat things that never actually materializes -- like when Chief Jim Pickens resigned as chief, but then showed up every day afterwards just like normal. Sigh. Don't scare us like that, P. Demp. We can't take it.

This week the endless Grey's Anatomy/Private Practice crossover event finally dragged to an end. So little time, so much to say. Here's some highs and lows...

Lindy-High - Faye Dunaway as an aging surgeon -- the Norma Desmond of Seattle Grace. Truly, there was even a scene where Dr. Faye throws Christina out of her OR and we sware to god, we thought she was going to say, "What you're trying to say is that you don't want me to operate. Say it. Say it!" Luckily, Dr. Hunt was ready with army anecdote about knowing when it's time to quit, complete with a kind and somber look that clearly said, "Madame is the greatest star of them all."

Olivia-High - This week Dr. McHair’s has a break down, and Derrick’s dark damaged underbelly turns out to be pretty compelling. After making a mistake in the OR last week, Dr. Floppyhair is willing to lobotomize his patient Frankenstyle to save his conscious. The chief actually has to stop Derrick from sewing the lady up with a whipstitched frontal lobe. Awesome. After his patient dies, McDreams gets in a brawl with Sloan. In the hospital. On a balcony. We swear, we were sure that one of them was going to fall over and die. Oh, the drama. The episode ends with Derrick downing tequila like it’s discount YooHoo and he’s trying to get his delicious chocolaty money’s worth. Go, Dr. Shepard, Go. Find those inner demons and deal with them. Now if we could somehow surgically remove Meredith from all of those scenes . . .

Lindy-Low - Pretty much everything else. Meredith's voice over was particularly excrutiating this time: "Patients think we're gods, some call us monsters, but we're just people." Just kill us now. Also, we HATE Jessica Capshaw and her weird perkiness. Why can Callie not find someone cool, and relatively free of neuroses to match her level of awesome? We've had a thought: Callie and Addison. Right? This could be genius. Both are gorgeous, sexy, smart, stong women. They both want babies. They have pre-established chemistry. Why don't they get married and raise gorgeous, sexy, smart, strong children? Think about it Shonda Rhimes. That's all we ask.

Olivia-Low - The fact that Faye Dunaway isn’t a new regular. She is Fab. U. Lous. Fabulous dammit. And she brought it this week. To say thanks, lets have a nostalgic pic, shall we?

Is there a way that we can be her in our next life? Please?

"Men In Trees" Star James Tupper Shows Us Some "Mercy"

Oh Men In Trees, we hardly knew you. And what we did know, we didn't love. However, we do remember carrying a little torch for your male lead and Anne Heche's woodsy boyfriend, James Tupper. His turn on Samantha Who? only fueled the fire, and it turns out we may get another chance to explore our crush during ABC's new medical drama, Mercy...

The project, from Universal Media Studios, is a comedic drama about three nurses at Mercy Hospital bound together in friendship by the highs and lows of their personal and professional lives.

Tupper will play Dr. Chris Sands, a new doctor at Mercy Hospital who had a sizzling affair with one of the nurses while both were stationed in Iraq. (Hollywood Reporter)

Got it, so it's Grey's Anatomy, but with nurses instead of interns. We suppose we could get down with that as long as the doctors are hot, and Katherine Heigl stays far, far away. The thing is though, do we really need another hospital show clogging up the works? Shouldn't we focus on fixing the ones we have?

Not to make you feel like you're studying for the SATs or anything, but key in this sentence is the ambiguous use of the word "and" - meaning, as many have speculated, that one of the two may leave, but not both. Most likely it's Heigl who's gone, if anyone is - Knight is reportedly happier with Grey's now that his character has more to do. Here's what Shonda Rhimes had to say about what James Pickens' quote, which resulted in everyone going apeshit:

When Rhimes was asked to discuss the double departure, she told the press at Thursday's NAACP Image Awards, "That was a very interesting rumor. And it's not true."

Rimes went on to say that Pickens' well-wishes to his colleagues were "taken out of context." She added, "You know I don't like to tell you what's going to happen on the show, but that is a rumor."

The hulaballo has Pickens backtracking as quick as he can:

We've been living with these rumors for a long time. When the question was posed to me, I was more trying to congratulate Katie and T.R. on whatever they were going to do. But yeah, I don't have any special info about it either way.

So this week -- the actual crossover event -- lots to discuss. Here's your highs and lows...

Lindy-High: Here's the deal -- we've had a bit of an epiphany this week. We love Audra McDonald. We LOVE Taye Diggs. Kate Walsh is a goddess. Yet, in spite of all this, we kind of hate Private Practice. The plots aren't really compelling which renders the characters (even the aforementioned objects of our affection) a bit boring in context. However, this week Sam and Naomi came to Seattle Grace and a transformation occurred. Suddenly, Sam and Naomi were complex characters with interesting backstory. We love, love, love the right-there-in-front-of-you contrast between Derek's old life with Addison and his new life with Meredith -- mostly, because the colorful interest of the former casts the sad blandness of the latter into sharp relief. Solution: abandon ship on Private Practice, move Addison, Sam and Naomi back to Grey's Anatomy. Fire the interns and Izzie, give George more of the awkward humor/rally-the-troops enthusiasm that made him fun in the beginning, and we're off to the races. Right? Who's with us?

Olivia-High: Okay, so first and foremost, we are totally on board with Remote Lindy’s idea to keep all the strongest parts of the two weak shows, creating a crazy Siamese Frankenstein of a medical show. Sew it back together. It’s what’s best for all of us. Also, Derrick grew some balls this week. Not fake self-righteous bravado, real balls. He went head-to-head with Addison over a patient’s well being, and was actually right. For once. Waita Man Up, Dr. McHair. Now lets talk about the really important thing: Hair. Kate Walsh’s hair is just beyond . . . Her hair along with Taye Diggs’ gorgeousness really carried us through two hours of crossover eventus.

Lindy-Low: Izzie and her weird camp counselor zeal to put the fun back in surgical grunt work. We can't deal with glitter. We just can't. Also, is there really nothing else going on at the hospital that Cheif Jim Pickens has time to hold one side of a scotch tape finish line?

Olivia-Low: Plain and simple, we are annoyed. Lexie is annoying. Izzie and her weird dormant brain/glitter illness are annoying. Meredith and her little cheater friend Sadie? Annoying. Even Christina and Dr. Hunt annoyed us this week. Dr. Hunt’s sweet-as-pie ex-fiancé shows up out of nowhere this week, because her father is dying. We don’t understand why Hunt would break up with a woman (an annoying woman, btw) over email. And, we don’t understand why Christina accepts his “I didn’t want to hurt her” excuse. That’s annoying. It’s cowardice and it’s annoying. Remote Lindy: If we merge the shows can we get rid of Lexie, Meredith, and Hunt’s cowardice too?

The “Grey’s Anatomy”/ “Private Practice” Crossover Event Continues Tonight

Last week Remote Lindy filled us in on the GA/PP Crossover Event, an event that amounted to a cryptic phone call. Awesome.

This week the “Event” continues, but ABC might just be bringing their A game.

Specifically? This guy:

Taye mother-effing Diggs. The previews and teasers suggest that Mr. Diggs and his white-white smile will be heavily involved in the event “Event.” Cue the applause, foot stamping, and don’t forget the wolf whistling.

ABC, we’re hoping Taye is in every scene. If we are expected to sit through an hour or two of this crossover-palooza stomaching Meredith and Derrick and their MerDerickian antics, we should at least be rewarded with Diggsian hotness.

Don’t let us down.

Verrrrry interesting speculation from Scott Collins of the LA Times that this whole talk of Heigl and Knight leaving Grey's may just be a way for the show to boost its flagging ratings...

...it may seem like old-school skepticism but we'll ask anyway: Not that he's necessarily wrong, but how does Pickens know for sure that either one of his costars is leaving? Actors are not always the most reliable sources of dish on upcoming scripts, let alone information about what's happening off the set. For the record, network and studio sources have declined comment on the Heigl/Knight issue, as have PR reps for the two actors.

But that leads the second point: Why should anyone comment and ruin all this great suspense? Now in its fifth season, "Grey's" needs all the help it can get. Back in the day - that would be the 2006-07 season, to be precise, when it averaged a record 19.9 viewers - it was ABC's top-rated scripted show and bona fide sensation.

That all seems like a very, very long time ago. Fans have complained bitterly about this season's storylines - particularly the remergence of "Dead Denny," a deceased former love interest of Heigl's character surgical resident Izzie Stevens - and the show is slogging through its worst-ever ratings, averaging 15.1 million viewers. A current arc of interlocking episodes with the "Grey's" spin-off "Private Practice" seems to be boosting the latter show without doing anything to help the former.

So by keeping the Heigl/Knight drama alive, Pickens may have just been doing what he could to help out the home team.

Obviously, there's been a lot of back-and-forth on whether or not George and Izzie are abandoning the Grey's Anatomy ship. We haven't really given much credence to all the speculation up to this point, but then Chief of Surgery, Jim Pickens spoke up and we took notice...

Co-star James Pickens Jr. confirmed to US Weekly that both actors are indeed leaving the show.
"Yes, she is," Pickens said when asked if Heigl was checking out of Seattle Grace. "Wherever Katherine goes, I wish her nothing but the best." And what about Knight? "He's going too," Pickens said. "He just wanted to pursue other career paths." (Ausiello Files)

Can we be honest? We're over them both (especially you, Heigl). At this point Izzie's plotline is insufferable, and we can't even remember the last time George had a speaking part in a scene. Sad really, because in the beginning we really loved T.R. Knight's awkward charm and rally-the-team pep talks (remember when he delivered Dr. Bailey's baby, y'all?). What it comes down is this: neither of their characters is really contributing anything valuable to the show at this point (although, in fairness, their not the only ones on that list), best to put us all out of our misery and leave us to more important things like obsessing over Dr Torres' weird '80's make up.
