David Letterman To Maya Rudolph: "I Like It When Pregnant Women Are Really Big."

Presumably, if you're David Letterman, and you have a guest on your show like, say, Maya Rudolph who, in addition to being pregnant, also seems to be exhausted, and having a little trouble bringing the usual magic to the interview, there's really only one thing to be done: start talking about how much you like pregnant women. However, as is usually the case with Dave, there's a fine line between the compliment and the soul-crushing...

Our favorite thing about this interview is that Dave seems to violate at least three of the top five items on the list of appropriate behavior around pregnant women:

1. Start discussing her pregnancy before you actually know her to be pregnant.
2. Use the word "balloon" to describe her appearance.
3. When you find out how much pregnancy weight she's gained, shriek out the number and then laugh uncontrollably.

Although in fairness, Maya Rudolph mostly just seems happy she made it out to the desk.

Lately former Vice President Dick Cheney has been sipping on vast amounts of presidential haterade, criticizing Barack left and right. "Buck Shot" Cheney is not happy with the fact that Prez Obama at the helm, and he's made his displeasure known calling the President's new economic and foreign policies "dangerous." Dick, Dick, Dickdickdick . . . those are bold words after eight, dare we say, marginal years in office. We feel like someone should remind Old man Cheney of his track record, and perhaps let him know that we don't appreciate his lip.

Not to worry, big Dave is on the case. Like Kiefer Sutherland to Brooke Shields' rescue, David Letterman delivered a late night verbal head butt to Cheney's geriatric face.

Secretly, in Montana, to his long long longtime gf and mother of his 5-year-old son Harry, Regina Lasko. Wow. Letterman was a confirmed bachelor after his first marriage ended in '77 - but then, he didn't have the kid until he was 56, so maybe he's late coming to these things. Here's what Dave reportedly said to his studio audience during the taping of his show tonight - we'll get you video of this as soon as we've got it...

"Regina and I began dating in February of 1986, and I said, 'Well, things are going pretty good, let's just see what happens in about 10 years,'" joked Letterman.

“I had avoided getting married pretty good for, like, 23 years, and I — honestly, whether this happened or not — I secretly felt that men who were married admired me ... like I was the last of the real gunslingers, you know what I'm saying?'"

Back in December, a 28 year-old Iraqi journalist named Muntazar Al Zaidi threw both his shoes at President George W. Bush, yelling “This is a gift from the Iraqis; this is the farewell kiss, you dog!” Now he's been sentenced to three years in jail.

Well, sad for him, though we can't help but guess that he'll probably wind up the most popular guy there. So happy for him! He'll make so many friends! And happy for us that we have a reason to look back at the collective shoegasm that Letterman, Leno, and Conan had over the incident, after the jump...

This week, the question on many people's mind: Is a whole week of U2 on Letterman, too much U2? The short answer is: "Yes. Moving on." However, it started us pondering: Are there people we wouldn't mind watching five days in a row?

Here's our top ten choices:

1. Neil Patrick Harris. Segment: Five days of this...

Except he would insert our name and follow it up with, "You're a dirty little blogger."

2. Tracy Morgan. Segment: Tracy Morgan acting nuts. Dave responding with the whitest comments possible.

3. Drew Barrymore. Segment: Drew's top five zaniest moments from her lifetime in show business, followed by a strip tease on Dave's desk...

4. Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio. Segment: Kate and Leo giving us the top five reasons that they love each other, but aren't in love with each other. Never gets old.

5. Matt Damon. Segment: Five days of Matt Damon doing impressions of his past co-stars...

6. Donald Sutherland. Segment: Donald sits there looking regal. We leer. Dave checks his watch and looks uncomfortable.

7. The Foo Fighters. Segment: Five days of performances followed by five minutes of Dave Grohl doing stand up.

8. Ellen Degeneres. Segment: Ellen sits out on the couch for all Dave's other guests and does sidekick commentary. Like Johnny Carson and Ed McMahon. Genius.

9. Tim Gunn. Segment: Five days of analysis on David Letterman's outfits followed by taped segments of Dave and Tim shopping at Bergdorf's.

10. The cast of 30 Rock. Segment: The cast performs the top five funniest scenes from 30 Rock in a black box theater with improvised props from the audience.

Tracy Morgan Is All About "Karate and Getting Females Pregnant"

The Nerve editors have blessed us with a compilation of The Twenty Weirdest TV Interviews of All Time. And of course, our boy Tracy Mo made the list.

Back in January of 2008 when the election was in it’s infancy, the world of entertainment was rocked by the Writer’s Strike, and Tracy had just been freed from the shackles of a DUI-induced ankle bracelet, Mr. Morgan thought the time was right for him to make an appearance on David Letterman. A wasted appearance. Of course, who’s to say whether Tracy’s inebriation was staged (Joaquin is just borrowing tactics from the master). But who cares. His timing is still kind of flawless.

He actually gets Paul Schafer to cosign on doing karate and getting women pregnant . . . at the same time. Paul says, “That’s just how we do!”

Ben Stiller sure got some mileage out it during last night's Oscar ceremony -- a performance that just added more credence to our belief that Ben Stiller is only funny when imitating other people. We find him hysterical as Tom Cruise, and last night's Joaquin Phoenix bit was rock solid, but we never find his original characters to be all that funny.

U2 On "The Late Show With David Letterman" - For A Week

Bono and his bandmates will be on Letterman every night from March 2nd - March 6th to promote their new album, No Line On The Horizon, which drops March 3rd. Wow - don't know that we've seen something like this since John and Yoko on Mike Douglas in '72.

It probably has a lot to do with the Conan O'Brien move to Late Night, and a perception that there's an opportunity right now to pick off viewers, but it sure seems like Letterman's doing a lot of stuff no one else is doing. Let's give a brief rundown from just the last month, shall we?

1. Airing Bill Hicks' 15 Year-Old Censored Performance - Ballsy, moving, awesome.

2. Ripping apart Rod Blagojevich.

3. Joaquin Phoenix. Don't know if that was a hoax or not - or, honestly, what the hell that was. But it sure does seem this kind of thing happens to Dave a lot more than it happens to anyone else.

4. This U2 announcement.

Letterman's on a serious roll right now. It'll be interesting to see if this results in him getting the late-night crown that was supposed to be his for good back in 1993.

We can all agree that Joaquin Phoenix's behavior on David Letterman was too ridiculous to chalk up to simple substance abuse, right? Sudden mental illness seems possible but unlikely, which seems to leave "hoax" as the most feasible option.

The question is, did Joaquin get a little inspiration from the king of punks, Ashton Kutcher...

Even though Phoenix has denied hoax rumors, Kutcher says it is "too odd" that Phoenix's brother-in-law, Casey Affleck, happens to be "doing a documentary on him," filming all of his weird antics. "I find it interesting that at the end of the interview, he takes his glasses off and returns to shake Dave's hand again," Kutcher writes. (Us Magazine)

Hmmm. Now that we think about it, Letterman's quips did seem awfully hilarious and punch-y to be spontaneous ("How was your time with the unibomber?" "Joaquin, sorry you couldn't be here tonight"). That actually makes us feel a bit better about the whole thing. After all, we don't want Joaquin Phoenix to be crazy, or drug addicted, or both -- we wish him health, happiness and light.

Oh wait, Ashton's got Demi weighing in on the situation...

"I can't figure out if it was real or a very in-depth character he has committed to," she blogs on her Twitter page.

OMG, did we not say the exact same thing? Demi Moore is our soul twin!

(By the way, we don't actually think there's anything "simple" about substance abuse. Just to be clear.)

Toward the end of David Letterman's whatever-the-hell-that was with Joaquin Phoenix, Dave made reference to Farrah Fawcett. That's because in 1997, Letterman presided over an equally kooky (but much more animated and less hirsute) interview with Farrah. Choosing which is crazier is kind of like choosing between gold and platinum. Part one of the Letterman/ Fawcett fiasco is above, and here's part two...

What do you think? Pretty tough call, right? And even more difficult when you factor in Letterman and Crispin Glover, from the Late Night days:

If we had to, we'd go with Glover at #1, because of the apparent mania. Then Phoenix, then Fawcett. Again, they're all great. Meanwhile, Dave is already making reference to Joaquin being on, you know, something:

Letterman on Thursday said that since so many of today's stars appear screwed up on one substance or another, "we've put together the `Late Show' celebrity drug update."

Video of Olympics swimmer Michael Phelps appeared with the caption, "Michael Phelps: Weed." Baseball star Alex Rodriguez followed, captioned "Alex Rodriguez: 'Roids."

Then came a picture of Phoenix from the night before, wearing sunglasses and a long, black beard and the caption: "Joaquin Phoenix: ???????"

Okay, here's our theory: Joaquin Phoenix is cast in a Charles Manson biopic and he's currently too deep in the method for there to be any hope of escape. At any rate, we are completely mesmerized by this video of his appearance on The Late Show With David Letterman last night, mostly because it proves once again that David Letterman's comedic genius knows no bounds. Neither, apparently, does Joaquin Phoenix's crazy -- it has to seen to be believed...

Saw Blago on Letterman, and wow. He ripped him up, telling him flat-out he thought he was guilty, and taking him to task for appearing on TV all the time. It was the sort of real, tough, direct television you don't see much these days - except on Letterman. Honestly, with this and the airing of Bill Hicks' censored performance, Dave is threatening to make his program essential viewing. Steve Johnson of the Chicago Tribune wrote a great piece on how "Goofy Dave" has become "Citizen Dave." Here are some excerpts:

(Letterman has) completed in this, his third decade on national television, a remarkable transformation from Goofy Dave, the young guy deconstructing the late-night talk-show format, to Citizen Dave, the older guy using that format as a forum to express his concerns about the world.

Since his 2000 heart surgery, he has taken on President Bush and candidate John McCain, global warming and Bill O'Reilly, Rush Limbaugh and the lack of national leadership. His first broadcast after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks was an almost oracular expression of what a nation was feeling and the best thing any broadcaster found to say in that dark period.

He even turned a post-jail visit by Paris Hilton political, in a sense, using her appearance as cultural critique, a riotous dismantling of the notion of unearned celebrity and blind adherence to promotional agendas...

The most recent example came Tuesday night, when the "Late Show" hosted Rod Blagojevich in the midst of the deposed Illinois governor's pursuit of every last ounce of available attention. Or perhaps Letterman, to phrase it better, deposed the deposed governor; there were hints of the prosecutorial in his approach.

"I saw you on—I think every other show that is in production currently," Letterman said to Blagojevich, "and the more you talked and the more you repeated your innocence, the more I said to myself, 'Oh, this guy's guilty.' "

Well this was very odd television viewing. But very moving. David Letterman apologized profusely on Friday night's Late Show for censoring controversial comic Bill Hicks' performance 15 years ago, 4 months before the 32-year-old died of pancreatic cancer. At first, the crowd didn't know what to make of it, and laughed uneasily - and then they realized, crap, Letterman's serious, and he's really sorry. Dave then welcomed Bill Hicks' mother, and apologized more. And then he showed the routine he censored a decade and a half ago. Which, as we mentioned before, though briliiant and biting, is the sort of thing network television might censor. Don't know why he did this now, but glad he did.

If you don't know about Bill Hicks, he was a wildly controversial comic who died in 1994 at the age of 32 from pancreatic cancer. Five months before his death, he taped a routine for the then-newish Late Show With David Letterman. Unfortunately, the routine was considered way too hot to broadcast. Now, we're anti-censorship, but if you see the routine, you'll immediately see why - it's all stuff you can't talk about on broadcast television. Still, this Friday, nearly 15 years after Hicks' death, David Letterman will have Bill's mother on to talk about her son's legacy - and, amazingly, will air the censored performance. Amy Sedaris wants to “Make ‘Em Laugh”

Ooooh, we love Amy Sedaris. Her appearances on David Letterman are the stuff of dreams. She has a magic, no?

While we are still anxiously awaiting Sedaris’ new TV project, our Amy is taking part in the PBS series Make ‘Em Laugh: The Funny Business of America. It’s a six-installment documentary airing this January that “explores the currents of American comedy throughout a century of social and political change” (pbs.com)

Besides the whole ‘thought provoking television’ shtick that PBS is so keen on, we also love the fact Billy Crystal will introduce each episode while the fabulous Ms. Sedaris narrates. Cool, right?

But here’s the thing . . .

In abstract terms, it sounds like an amazing project. And we’re always down for Amy. In theory, we’re glad Amy wants to Make ‘Em Laugh . . . but for once she might kinda fail. Yeah. Blasphemy. We know. We didn’t want to believe it ourselves. But Amy’s scripted bits in the new online installment, "Teh Internets" (despite the amazing title) aren’t that funny . . .

Rough.

However, our fellow bloggers Tracie (formerly known as "Slut Machine") from Jezebel and Gabe from Videogum are quite lovely and charming.

Try as we might, we can not shake the unswerving sense that, in fact, we have a massive crush on Kate Hudson. Somehow this star of frothily bland romcoms and former wife of that keeps making us vaguely heartsick everytime we see her, like back when we knew her in middle school she wasn't the starlet that she is today so we blew her off, and now, this. (We didn't know her, guys, it's a metaphor. Or something.)

Well, Diamond Dave Letterman did nothing to help the situation last night, as he brought out a new photo book featuring a bent-over Hudson in garters and a bare ass.

The Weekly Rewind: Everyone's a Comedian

The comedians made fun of the candidates, the candidates went on comedy shows, and everyone seemed to think that being serious was the same as raising taxes. Meanwhile, the new TV season was still going strong, except that maybe nobody was watching. We'll try to make sense of it all -- and be funny! -- as we bring you the highlights of the week.

We decided that whoever wins the popular vote, comedy will take the election. We were hoping for a late-night foursome, but still enjoyed seeing John McCain finally make it to Dave Letterman's comedy hot seat. We enjoyed the debate, but were a little disappointed by the inevitable follow-up spoof on Saturday Night Live. We watched as Tina Fey tried to beg off impersonating Sarah Palin, but she couldn't help telling Dave how she does it. And it didn't matter, because Sarah Palin's coming to SNL herself -- and she'll probably take over 30 Rock next.

We were surprised when Mark Wahlberg lost his sense of humor entirely. But we had to admit, that was kinda funny, too.

We read all about Maureen McCormick's life of sex, drugs and Marcia Brady. Then we heard her talk about it, and, wow. Just wow.

But while Marcia got Davy Jones to come to her prom, the High School Musical kids had to settle for Tom Cruise.

We were happy that the fashion world agrees with our passion for Mad Men's curvy dynamo Christina Henricks. But we worried about the show itself.

We noticed that The Profiler still cuts a great profile. And Lisa Bonet made us think of a pun that we'll keep to ourselves.

Despite the fact that 15-year-old Gossip Girl star Taylor Momsen seems defensive about her weight and still dresses like a 30-year-old model for Mode magazine, we decided she's probably better-adjusted than we are. As for 15-year-old Miley Cyrus, we're not so sure.

And George Hamilton's tale of 12-year-old stepmother sex? That was some time ago, but yikes.

We saw photos of some kids playing Star Trek, and hoped the actual movie would look a lot better.

We saw Cinemax's new zilly, zmutty zex-fest, and decided that literary porn is just like regular porn, but boring.

We thought it was cute that the stars of Gossip Girl think we care what they think.

We heard Blake Lewis deliver a smackdown on American Idol. (Remember? He was that beatbox guy? With the vests?)

And we saw Paris in London, but couldn't figure out how to get them to keep her.

Tina Fey on Tonight's "Letterman": Sarah Palin's Voice Is a Combination of "Fargo," Reese Witherspoon and Her Friend's Grandma

Busy Tina Fey has pretaped her interview on tonight's Late Show With David Letterman, and we have an early clip. The multitalented comedian and everyone's favorite crush object spends several minutes on her fantastic impression of Sarah Palin, saying the Alaska governor's voice is as unique as Billy Bob Thornton's in Sling Blade.

And what about the politics of spoofing the candidate?

"I've seen [Democrats] who say, 'Oh, no, you're helping them... because it makes them seem too nice,' " Fey says. "Or the Republicans say it's sexist.... But that's just crazy, because you have to be able to goof on the female politicians just as much, or you really are treating them like they're weaker or something. And Sarah Palin is a tough lady. She kills things. Big animals, bigger than me and you together."

McCain to Letterman: "I Screwed Up"

John McCain made his long-awaited appearance on Late Show With David Letterman last night -- regrettably, without Sarah Palin -- and was plenty apologetic for standing Dave up last time around. (Although he managed to avoid providing an explanation for why he did it.) Then the famous former prisoner of war joked, "I haven't had so much fun since my last interrogation." Harsh, dude!

The talk turned from funny to combative and back again -- as when, for instance, McCain promised not to raise anyone's taxes except Letterman's. Dave eventually moved on to another touchy subject: McCain and Palin's complaint that Barack Obama "pals around with terrorists" such as William Ayers. "Did you not have a relationship with [convicted Watergate conspirator] Gordon Liddy?" Dave asked, which immediately made him a tougher interviewer than the majority of reporters these days.

TV Tonight: Obama and Biden Might Appear on Leno, Opposite McCain and Palin on Letterman

Tonight at 11:35, the late-night talk show wars could get even more heated than yesterday's presidential debate. That's because the hour's big comic rivals, Jay and Dave, have been suggesting that all four candidates might show up for some jokes and chat.

In this corner: Late Show With David Letterman. We reported earlier that John McCain is slated to show up for a tongue-lashing from Dave after skipping out on his scheduled appearance a while back. But now we're hearing that McCain might bring an apology gift along with him: Lipsticked bulldog Sarah Palin.

Last night, Dave said that McCain had "hinted" he'd be bringing Palin along. Still, he seemed doubtful that it would happen. “I think he was trying to make me feel better. Like, ‘Oh, I know we’ve got the hook in Letterman now.’ But I don’t think she’ll be here. Miss Alaska will probably not be here.”

If she does show up, it'll be a brilliant move by McCain. We all know how much Dave likes a pretty face (not to mention the ratings Palin would be sure to bring), and seeing the two of them flirt and spar would be great television. Plus, they'd all have so much to talk about that there wouldn't be time to dwell on McCain's earlier no-show -- or his lagging campaign, for that matter.

In the other corner: The Tonight Show With Jay Leno. Jay mentioned earlier in the week that he'll be having vice-presidential candidate Joe Biden on tonight. (Good counter-programming? Er, possibly -- except, whatever your politics may be, Biden isn't exactly Mr. Excitement.)

But at the same time, Leno said Biden might "bring a friend." And if that friend happens to be Barack Obama, well, then we'll have a contest. The New York Post points out that both Obama and McCain are scheduled to attend a dinner in New York tonight, so Obama's appearance would probably have to be via satellite. But given Jay's lighter-weight interviewing style, that would probably work out just fine.

What are the chances that all four of them will show up? We'll say 50-50 -- and we're setting two DVRs, just in case.

Hey, you still like us, right?

Not everyone's digging on this (admittedly all over the place) season of Entourage like we are. Well, we got a theory about that, plus more news on a new CBS/YouTube agreement, the latest on the whole McCain/Letterman/Palin/Fey clusterfuck -- and The View not a nice place to work? For Star Jones? Never.

-- People are downright angry about the new season of Entourage. What? Not enough boobs to get you through the first actual hardship Vinnie Chase has ever seen? (Well, OK; we'd be OK with more boobs too. But still.)

-- Hey, remember back when The View was a hotbed of catty backstabbing, passive aggression, and awkward political posturing? Star Jones sure does, and by the sounds of her, she's not aware that there's been plenty of that sort of thing since she split.

-- John McCain, having survived 5 years in a Hanoi prison, seems to think that he will get through twenty minutes with Dave Letterman this Thursday, after famously blowing him off to save the economy a few weeks back. Will we be watching? Oh, you betcha!

-- Speaking of which, Tina Fey says that she will leave the planet if Sarah Palin gets elected Vice-President. Hmmm... We bet Palin's got a special place in heaven all picked out for her. And by heaven, we mean hell.

-- CBS will soon begin showing full episodes of its shows on YouTube, and YouTube will use the arrangement to premiere a new, hi-quality version of their streaming technology. But don't get too excited, unless you been meaning to catch up on Star Trek: TOS at work or something, because it's unlikely they'll be including new shows like The Mentalist for a while.
