Watching Walken onscreen, it’s hard to tell how he’s going to deliver even the most mundane bit of dialogue, much less predict how his characters will behave under pressure. But while Walken’s off-kilter presence has garnered him a sizable cult following, it’s easy to overlook what a fascinating actor he can be in more complex roles. In many of his character roles, Walken has fun with his image, but he’s not afraid to play it straight when the part calls for it. Abel Ferrara’s &lt;i&gt;King of New York&lt;/i&gt; is one of those parts, and consequently one of his best performances.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Frank White, the crime lord Walken plays in &lt;i&gt;King of New York&lt;/i&gt;, is one of the most frightening criminals I’ve ever seen in a movie, due in large part to the unpredictability that Walken brings to the role. From the first time we meet Frank, he seems to be capable of anything, which gives him an edge in his criminal endeavors. Most of his competition sticks to hard and fast traditions, the most important being that the bigwigs keep their hands clean while the foot soldiers fight the wars. Frank has no use for such traditions- when he needs someone killed, he’d just as soon do it himself. There are many possibilities as to why Frank would do this, but I think it’s because he wants people to think he’s the baddest, scariest man in New York. And when he follows the killing of a rival gang leader by inviting his underlings to join his gang, it sends a very specific message- if you’re crazy enough to follow a guy who does this, I want you on my side.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Consequently, many of Frank’s foot soldiers are as volatile as he is- and some even share his flair for the theatrical, as when one storms into a hotel room shootout screaming, “room service, motherfuckers!” In addition, Frank’s gang could be called “post-racial”- whereas Frank’s rivals generally adhere to ethnic boundaries, such concerns are beneath Frank. Most of his underlings are African-American- two of his most prominent foot soldiers are played by Laurence (then Larry) Fishburne and Giancarlo Esposito- but Steve Buscemi also turns up as Frank’s in-house drug tester. And Frank’s own ethnicity- just look at his name- allows him an entry in legitimate society that would be more limited to other criminals of his stature.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It’s this air of near-legitimacy that rankles the NYPD, especially a trio of cops played by David Caruso, Wesley Snipes, and Victor Argo. Whereas the power of the city’s other top criminals is relatively contained to the underworld, Frank hobnobs with New York’s elite, turning up at black-tie parties and charity events. “He’s a movie star,” says Caruso, who bemoans the fact that Frank is running roughshod over the city while he and his partners are only bringing in a modest policeman’s salary. But how to stop him? Caruso and Snipes determine that in order to catch Frank, they need to be as crazy as he is. It isn’t until it’s too late (when Frank crashes one cop’s funeral to kill another one) that that discover that crazy isn’t enough- one must also be lucky.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Argo’s Roy Bishop is the one exception to the film’s cycle of brutality- the one “good cop” who sticks to his principles and hopes to bring Frank in not by sneaking around but by nuts-and-bolts police work. We see him sitting at home in front of his computer, sifting through police files in an attempt to make a case. Throughout the film, Ferrara contrasts Roy’s steadfast adherence to old-fashioned morality with Frank’s more slippery kind of ethics, and Frank understandably sees Roy as his biggest threat. I found it interesting to see Argo, who usually played wiseguys, playing the closest thing this film has to a steady moral compass.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt;King of New York&lt;/i&gt; is one of the bleakest crime movies I’ve ever seen, with one scene of unsparing violence after another. But it’s stylish enough that it’s anything but a slog- like &lt;i&gt;GoodFellas&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;Scarface&lt;/i&gt; before it, it’s amassed a considerable cult, even serving as an inspiration for the late Notorious B.I.G. I’ve only seen a handful of Ferrara films to date, but one thing that’s impressed me about them is how stylish his films can be despite their budgetary limitations. In &lt;i&gt;King of New York&lt;/i&gt;, Ferrara uses the low budget to his advantage, setting scenes in scruffy back-alleys and abandoned buildings to give the film a grittier feel than most movies of its kind. I also &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/walken_king_ny.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/walken_king_ny.jpg" align="right" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;liked that Frank’s home isn’t an expansive estate but a suite at the Plaza, which combines a location in the heart of New York (perfect for shots of him overlooking the city) with a kind of rented luxury that says everything about the mystique Frank wants to create for himself.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;At the center of it all is the enigma of Frank White. Throughout the film Ferrara and Walken invite us to ask the question, what drives this man? Late in the film, he confronts Roy in his apartment and tells him that he considers himself a businessman rather than a criminal, and states that “I never killed anybody that didn’t deserve it.” But how to reconcile that with the charge he seems to get from his power? Or for that matter, what of his efforts to save a children’s hospital in a poor neighborhood? One thing’s for sure- he’s hooked on his sense of power. When he says he wants to run for mayor, everyone laughs until Frank tells them he’s serious. Is he? &lt;embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/osCVUNDxhZQ&amp;amp;hl=en&amp;amp;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="344"&gt;&lt;/embed&gt;&lt;/object&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Okay, I’ll admit, this one might be cheating since there’s never &lt;em&gt;really&lt;/em&gt; been a Specials comic book...but there’s no question Craig Mazin’s criminally underseen comedy is, indeed,&amp;nbsp;a comic book classic. The film (starring national treasure Thomas Haden Church as The Strobe, Judy Greer as best-Goth-girlfriend-ever Deadly Girl and Rob Lowe’s finest hour and a half as The Weevil) hit theaters for about five minutes in L.A. before sinking into undeserved obscurity, and I only saw it because &lt;em&gt;The New Times&lt;/em&gt; and the &lt;em&gt;L.A. Weekly&lt;/em&gt; raved about it. They were both right for once, and so now I&amp;#39;m spreading the love in case you ever spot this in a video store (or trust me enough to add it to your Netflix queue). The premise is similar to &lt;em&gt;Mystery Men&lt;/em&gt; (if, as one&amp;nbsp;&lt;a class="" href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0181836/"&gt;IMDb&lt;/a&gt; commenter quipped, &lt;em&gt;Mystery Men&lt;/em&gt; had been directed by Eric Rohmer) -- i.e., an ensemble comedy about a team of low-rent superheroes -- but &lt;em&gt;The Specials&lt;/em&gt; is less a genre parody than a look at the group dynamics of co-workers who only&amp;nbsp;HAPPEN to be superheroes (although for most of the movie, they could just as easily be doctors, musicians or real estate salesmen). Kitchen-sink indie filmmaking at its best, the movie features sharp, funny dialogue, about 90 seconds of special effects and a terrible coming attractions trailer that makes it look like a “wacky” Hollywood yuk-fest instead of the endearingly goofy gem that&amp;nbsp;it really is...which is why I included the (admittedly censored) scene above instead. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;SIN CITY (2005)&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/YKFLrTYKIXk&amp;amp;hl=en&amp;amp;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="480" height="295"&gt;&lt;/embed&gt;&lt;/object&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;All green screens and no sets make Robert Rodriguez’s &lt;em&gt;Sin City&lt;/em&gt; a deliriously hyper-stylized cinematic interpretation of Frank Miller&amp;#39;s celebrated graphic novel series.&amp;nbsp;Generating virtually every non-human element of his film noir with a computer, Rodriguez creates an adaptation nearly identical, in visual terms, to its source material. Fidelity, however, only gets one so far. And what makes the sumptuously black-and-white &lt;em&gt;Sin City&lt;/em&gt; truly thrum with grungy, brutal life is not only its all-star cast’s fittingly outrageous, archetypes-on-mescaline performances (notably those by Rosario Dawson and Benicio Del Toro) and Rodriguez’s expert reproduction of Miller’s hand-drawn comic panels, but the director’s approximation of the brisk movement implied by those illustrations. Rodriguez brings Miller’s images to life with dynamic verve, a feat almost as thrilling as the performance of Mickey Rourke as battle-scarred tough guy Marv, a granite bulldozer whom the actor – even under pounds of facial prosthetics – embodies with a burning-red heart and soul. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;BLADE 2 (2002)&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/TF9LpOWIJmA&amp;amp;hl=en&amp;amp;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="344"&gt;&lt;/embed&gt;&lt;/object&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;After several stuttering attempts to follow DC in leasing its characters to the big screen, Marvel Comics had its first real success with the 1998 &lt;em&gt;Blade&lt;/em&gt;, a horror-action hybrid based on one of the lesser supporting characters from its back pages: Blade, the African-American vampire hunter who himself possesses the advantages of vampirism (super strength, extended lifespan) and none of the disadvantages (can withstand sunlight, is not Eurotrashy), was born in the pages of &lt;em&gt;Tomb of Dracula&lt;/em&gt; during the blaxploitation movie era. (Artist Gene Colan based his look partly on that of Jim Brown.) The first Blade movie, directed by Stephen Norrington (&lt;em&gt;The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen&lt;/em&gt;) and written by David S. Goyer, was unapologetic cheeseball fun, with a choice selection of bits from the comic and energetic, unhinged performances by Wesley Snipes in the title role and Stephen Dorff at his man-you-love-to-hate best as the villainous Deacon Frost. The sequel, though, is real gourmet trash, with the sensationally gifted director Guillermo del Toro brought in to take Goyer&amp;#39;s nonsense about warring vampire tribes, give it a high polish, and set it all to a thumping hip-hop-meets-electronica score. The result is one of the most improbably gorgeous mindless thrill rides of the last several years, though the franchise keepers erred badly in permitting Goyer to not only write but direct the subsequent &lt;em&gt;Blade Trinity&lt;/em&gt;, which plowed into a wall with all hands lost. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;HELLBOY (2004)&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

P. Lovecraft&amp;#39;s squishy horror fantasies. Del Toro captures the look and feel of Hellboy&amp;#39;s world to a degree that marks the film as clearly a labor of love, and Ron Perlman, who plays the title character, reaches through the layers of makeup to give the enterprise some soul. He&amp;#39;s more skittishly adolescent than the gruff loner of the comics, which pays off major comic dividends in the scenes involving the poor red bastard&amp;#39;s crush on a moody firestarter played by Selma Blair: she&amp;#39;d make King Kong look down and shuffle his feet awkwardly. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;CONAN THE BARBARIAN (1982) &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/d1XmZ9_ckdw&amp;amp;hl=en&amp;amp;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="480" height="295"&gt;&lt;/embed&gt;&lt;/object&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Though often dismissed as merely an early, cheesy vehicle for then-fledgling actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, John Milius’ swords-and-sandals saga &lt;em&gt;Conan the Barbarian&lt;/em&gt; is pure mythic pulp, its epic action and fantasy proving faithful to the spirit of Robert E. Howard’s violent legends. Milius’ macho persona forcefully informs this testosterone-laced Conan tale, in which an orphaned child becomes a slave, then becomes a warrior, and then finally a king, a path paved with equal measures of bloodshed, sly humor and pseudo-profound pronouncements about honor and glory. Still something of an amateurish actor, the muscle-bound Schwarzenegger is nonetheless an ideal Conan, and despite the proceedings’ one-dimensionality, the director’s majestic widescreen compositions lend the film a striking classicism. But in its own way, each is pretty indispensible. Maddin’s film is, like his entire body of work, indescribable to anyone who hasn’t already seen it, but for those who are on his wavelength, it’s magical. That Criterion has finally embraced this most movie-drunk of filmmakers is exciting enough. But they’ve also gathered half a dozen different narration tracks for the sake of variety, including narration by Isabella Rossellini, Laurie Anderson, Eli Wallach, and Maddin himself. In addition, there’s a new documentary on the director, plus two new short films by Maddin, made especially for this release. So yeah, good news.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But if anything, the release of Season 5 of &lt;i&gt;The Wire&lt;/i&gt; is even more of a cause for celebration. The groundbreaking, critically-acclaimed HBO series has been praised to the heavens in venues both classier and more authoritative than this one, so I’ll refrain from heaping still more effusive praise on a series that hardly needs it. All I can say is, if you haven’t experienced &lt;i&gt;The Wire&lt;/i&gt; yet, you’ve got some great times ahead of you. And if you have, you don’t need me to convince you to buy the final season on DVD.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This week’s recent releases coming to DVD include: Dennis Quaid and Ellen Page in &lt;i&gt;Smart People&lt;/i&gt; (Disney, also Blu-Ray); Stephen Chow’s cockeyed kids’ movie &lt;i&gt;CJ7&lt;/i&gt; (Sony, also Blu-Ray); and Val Kilmer and Stephen Dorff in &lt;i&gt;Felon&lt;/i&gt; (Sony, also Blu-Ray). Also, three DVDs by Lech Majewski: &lt;i&gt;The Garden of Earthly Delights&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;Glass Lips&lt;/i&gt;, and &lt;i&gt;The Gospel According to Harry&lt;/i&gt; (all Kino), the last of which features a young Viggo Mortensen.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In TV on DVD, this week brings &lt;i&gt;South Park Season 11&lt;/i&gt; (Paramount), &lt;i&gt;Prison Break Season 3&lt;/i&gt; (Fox, also Blu-Ray), and &lt;i&gt;Caroline in the City Season 1&lt;/i&gt; (Paramount).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Finally, in Blu-Ray only news, the week’s big release almost certainly has to be Sony’s “Action” Box Set, which includes Jean Claude Van Damme in &lt;i&gt;Maximum Risk&lt;/i&gt;, Steven Seagal in &lt;i&gt;Half Past Dead&lt;/i&gt;, Wesley Snipes in &lt;i&gt;7 Seconds&lt;/i&gt;, and Ice Cube in &lt;i&gt;xXx: State of the Union&lt;/i&gt;. I mean, come on- Van Damme, Seagal, and Snipes all in one box set? The 1993 version of me is stoked. /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;Normally, I try not to get hung up on whether a movie is commercial. While it’s undeniable that films that are intended for a large audience have to satisfy a different set of expectations than those that aren’t, I generally do my best to consider the movie based on how well it succeeds in doing what it sets out to do. However, it’s undeniable that some filmmakers have sensibilities that are well-suited to commercial filmmaking, and others who don’t. Some of our best filmmakers (like Martin Scorsese) are even able to move back and forth between big-budget filmmaking and more personal work. Others have a harder time with it. One director who falls into the latter category is Philip Kaufman, and nowhere is this more apparent than his 1993 film &lt;i&gt;Rising Sun&lt;/i&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt;Rising Sun&lt;/i&gt; was based on a novel by Michael Crichton, whose work was experiencing a surge in popularity in the early nineties. Crichton’s novel combined the ever-popular murder mystery genre with the then-current topic of Japanese encroachment on the American business market. &lt;i&gt;Rising Sun&lt;/i&gt; wasn’t one of Crichton’s best novels, but there was potential there for an interesting film, and the choice of Kaufman to direct was inspired. Kaufman had been working for almost three decades, directing eccentric twists on popular genre films like 1972’s &lt;i&gt;The Great Northfield, Minnesota Raid&lt;/i&gt; and the 1978 remake of &lt;i&gt;Invasion of the Body Snatchers&lt;/i&gt;. But his best-known work came in the 1980s, with his rich adaptations of tricky works of literature including &lt;i&gt;The Right Stuff, The Unbearable Lightness of Being&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;Henry &amp;amp; June&lt;/i&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It’s clear from Kaufman’s pedigree that Fox was looking for a classy, A-list adaptation of Crichton’s bestseller. However, I’m not sure classy was the way to go with &lt;i&gt;Rising Sun&lt;/i&gt;. This is a story that incorporates such elements as boardroom intrigue, high-tech surveillance, the Japanese “shadow world” of Los Angeles, and a woman who gets off on being asphyxiated. Yet Kaufman directs the film like it’s high drama. The result is lifeless and inert. And if there’s one thing you don’t want in a movie where a character eats sushi off a woman’s bare breasts (with a nipple/sake chaser), it’s inertia.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But if &lt;em&gt;Rising Sun&lt;/em&gt; is a washout as a guilty-pleasure entertainment, it’s just as uncompelling as an exposé of Japanese culture. When it was first published, Crichton’s novel drew fire from Japanese-American groups for its portrayal of their business culture as being ruthless and conniving. But even when I saw the film back in 1993, most of the more shocking details seemed pretty quaint. Granted, some of the more supposedly anti-Asian elements were toned down for the movie, but no matter which form it took, &lt;em&gt;Rising Sun&lt;/em&gt; had surprisingly little insight into Japanese culture that hadn’t been expressed in a more interesting way elsewhere.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Which leaves us only with the murder mystery, which offers few surprises. Early in the film, Sean Connery’s wise Capt. John Connor tells Wesley Snipes’ Lt. Web &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/kaufman.jpg"&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/risingsun.gif"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/risingsun.gif" align="right" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;Smith, “When something seems too good to be true, then it’s not true.” Not particularly sage advice, but apparently advice that was heeded by Kaufman, Crichton, and co-screenwriter Michael Backes. Why else would they waste almost an hour setting up an obvious decoy villain? Once it becomes clear that the film is content to cycle through every twist and turn we expect from it- the fake villain, the heroes getting thrown off the case, the ugly revelations about their pasts, the emergence of the real villain, and so on- all that’s left is counting down the minutes between “surprise” revelations. And at 129 minutes, that’s a lot of counting.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Kaufman has always had a knack for casting, and in 1993, a movie top-lined by Connery and Snipes still qualified as an A-list production. For his part, Snipes is pretty solid in the film. I’ve long believed Snipes to be undervalued as an actor, due first to his career long being mired in forgettable action fare, then more recently because of his legal problems. Web Smith isn’t a great part- certainly not as flashy as his supporting role in &lt;i&gt;Mo’ Better Blues&lt;/i&gt;- but he does all he can with a character who’s essentially playing straight man to Connery. I especially like his slow burn moments, when he tries desperately to maintain his cool in the middle of confounding and/or ridiculous circumstances. Crichton objected to Fox’s casting of Snipes in a role that was written as white man, but I think that it works here, giving the film a complicated yet sympathetic lead in a way that grounds the story.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Connery, on the other hand, is content to coast through the film, propelled largely by his own presence. Crichton famously wrote the role of John Connor especially the Scots legend, but both the character and the performance are something of a dud. Connery’s role consists primarily of being right all the time and deigning to offer advice to those less enlightened than he. Unfortunately, this arrogance extends to the performance itself, with Connery (who also executive-produced) putting forth no more effort than necessary to earn his pay. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What’s more, Kaufman and Crichton take every opportunity they can to underline exactly how wise Connor is, most notably by pitting him against vulgar anti-Japanese Lt. Graham (Harvey Keitel), who refers to the Japanese as “nips” and decries their presence in this country. Unfortunately for the film, Keitel’s live-wire performance upstages Connery’s self-important one, with Keitel getting almost all of the best lines (my favorite being his declining of an offer of sushi: “no thanks. If I get a craving for mercury, I’ll eat a thermometer”).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When I look at Kaufman’s filmography, I can’t help but marvel at some of the novels he’s adapted for the screen. After all, here’s a guy who has successfully adapted&lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/kaufman.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/kaufman.jpg" align="right" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt; some near-unadaptable material, including books by Tom Wolfe and Milan Kundera. Who would have thought it would be Michael Crichton who would defeat him? But just because Crichton’s books seemingly adapt themselves doesn’t mean that Kaufman was the right director for the job. As a director who specialized in literate fare, scenes like the one in which Wesley Snipes is attacked in the middle of a raid by an irate nude woman just aren’t in his wheelhouse. Unfortunately, &lt;i&gt;Rising Sun&lt;/i&gt; was the beginning of a downturn in Kaufman’s career, leading first to the respectfully yet hardly enthusiastically-received &lt;i&gt;Quills&lt;/i&gt; seven years later, then another misguided commercial project, &lt;i&gt;Twisted&lt;/i&gt;, in 2004.
