&lt;p&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;Remember all of the sex-soaked stalker thrillers that flooded the moviegoing landscape in the years following &lt;i&gt;Fatal Attraction&lt;/i&gt;? &lt;i&gt;Obsessed&lt;/i&gt; looks like it could have fit into that cycle, and I don’t mean that in a good way. As the high-powered businessman whose wandering eye leads him to the worst possible woman, Idris Elba is yet another in a long line of &lt;i&gt;Wire&lt;/i&gt; cast members unable to make the jump to big-screen stardom. And do I detect an anti-interracial relationships undercurrent? It’s hard to imagine a movie nowadays about a white man sleeping with a psychotic African-American woman, who then threatens to tear apart his idyllic family. To say nothing of a gender switch, with the cheating spouse being an African-American woman and the one-night-stand-turned-stalker a white man. But who really cares about eggheaded stuff like that when we get to see Beyoncé having a catfight with Ali Larter, right? Honestly, I could care less either way. Here’s your Monday afternoon update on the year-end award and Top 10 list derby.  The American Film Institute has released its annual top ten list – I’m not sure I knew the AFI had an annual top ten list, but apparently they’ve been doing this since at least 2000 – and most of the titles are familiar from other such lists.  &lt;i&gt;The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Milk&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;Frost/Nixon&lt;/i&gt; are among the predictable entries, but superhero enthusiasts will be pleased to see both &lt;i&gt;The Dark Knight&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;Iron Man&lt;/i&gt; represented.  The full list is &lt;a href="http://www.afi.com/tvevents/afiawards/" target="_blank"&gt;here&lt;/a&gt;, along with the AFI’s top ten television shows, which include &lt;i&gt;The Wire&lt;/i&gt;, thank you very much.

The Boston Film Critics had an indecisive year in 2008.  They awarded ties for both Best Picture (&lt;i&gt;WALL-E&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;Slumdog Millionaire&lt;/i&gt;) and Best Actor (Sean Penn for &lt;i&gt;Milk&lt;/i&gt;, Mickey Rourke for &lt;i&gt;The Wrestler&lt;/i&gt;).  No big surprises &lt;a href="http://www.moviecitynews.com/awards/2009/critics_awards/boston.htm" target="_blank"&gt;here&lt;/a&gt;, aside from maybe the Ensemble Cast award for &lt;i&gt;Tropic Thunder&lt;/i&gt;.

The most idiosyncratic Top 10 list to date has to be that of &lt;i&gt;Entertainment Weekly&lt;/i&gt; columnist and &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2008/10/27/introducing-the-screengrab-24-hour-stephen-king-marathon.aspx" target="_blank"&gt;Screengrab 24-hour marathon&lt;/a&gt; inspiration Stephen King.  “I&amp;#39;m not trustworthy when it comes to movies… This is almost surely the only 10-best list you&amp;#39;ll read that contains not one but two Jason Statham movies.”  Indeed, King singles out both &lt;i&gt;The Bank Job&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;Death Race&lt;/i&gt; for praise (he hasn’t caught &lt;i&gt;Transporter 3&lt;/i&gt; yet), along with the craptastic &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2008/04/07/screengrab-review-quot-the-ruins-quot.aspx" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;i&gt;The Ruins&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/a&gt;.  “It could have been ludicrous. Instead, it&amp;#39;s unrelenting.”  Yes, unrelentingly ludicrous. But if, say, some unnamed benefactor with deep pockets was to give me any of this week’s new releases (hint hint), the one I would want most would be the &lt;i&gt;Murnau, Borzage and Fox DVD Collection&lt;/i&gt; (Fox). Spotlighting two of Fox’s most celebrated silent filmmakers- F.W. Murnau and Frank Borzage- the set collects a dozen of their great American silents, from Murnau’s &lt;i&gt;City Girl&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;Sunrise&lt;/i&gt; to Borzage’s &lt;i&gt;7th Heaven&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;Street Angel&lt;/i&gt;. But while the films alone would justify the purchase, the set is also filled with extras that should prove to be catnip for silent film junkies, including a feature-length documentary about the filmmakers, several commentary tracks, and the alternate European cut of Murnau’s masterpiece &lt;i&gt;Sunrise&lt;/i&gt;. Perhaps most exciting is the inclusion of material related to Murnau’s famous lost film &lt;i&gt;4 Devils&lt;/i&gt;, including the screenplay, a stills gallery, and a documentary about the film. All in all, it’s the perfect Christmas gift for the movie nerd in your life, not least if that movie nerd is me.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Of course, if you’re on a budget, that movie nerd would probably be happy with a number of this week’s other releases. Also worth mentioning on the classics front is the release of two of the most inventive films of the 1990s, Olivier Assayas’s &lt;i&gt;Irma Vep&lt;/i&gt; (Zeitgeist) and Lars Von Trier’s &lt;i&gt;Europa&lt;/i&gt; (Criterion), released in the U.S. as &lt;i&gt;Zentropa&lt;/i&gt;. Also of note are a pair of double-feature DVDs from Warner, one containing &lt;i&gt;Chamber of Horrors&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;The Brides of Fu Manchu&lt;/i&gt;, the other pairing &lt;i&gt;The Shuttered Room&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;It!&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If the DVD nut in your life is more of a TV watcher, you could do a hell of a lot worse than HBO’s massive box sets of &lt;i&gt;The Wire: The Complete Series&lt;/i&gt; (HBO) and &lt;i&gt;Deadwood: The Complete Series&lt;/i&gt; (HBO). Or if he’s more into brain-teasing fantasy, give &lt;i&gt;Lost Season 4&lt;/i&gt; (Disney, also Blu-Ray) a spin. And the classic TV nut should go for &lt;i&gt;Get Smart: The Complete Series&lt;/i&gt; (Universal).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you’re looking for some discs to go with the snazzy new Blu-Ray player you’re getting Christmas morning, this week brings the comedy triple feature of &lt;i&gt;Dodgeball&lt;/i&gt; (Fox), &lt;i&gt;The Mask&lt;/i&gt; (Warner), and &lt;i&gt;Super Troopers&lt;/i&gt; (Fox).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Finally, this week’s new releases on DVD include something for the kids (&lt;i&gt;Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who!&lt;/i&gt; [Fox, also Blu-Ray]), something for the ladies (&lt;i&gt;Sex and the City: The Movie&lt;/i&gt; Ultimate Collector’s Edition [Warner]), and something for the documentary fans (James Marsh’s stunning &lt;i&gt;Man on Wire&lt;/i&gt; [Magnolia]). Oh, and there’s a little something called &lt;i&gt;The Dark Knight&lt;/i&gt; (Warner, also Blu-Ray) coming out this week. &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/12/01-07/gene_hackman.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/12/01-07/gene_hackman.jpg" align="right" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;The Blu-ray edition of &lt;i&gt;The French Connection&lt;/i&gt; is due next month, so director William Friedkin is making the rounds, talking up the film and reminding people he’s still employable.  &lt;a href="http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/films/features/from-marseilles-to-baltimore-the-french-connection-and-tv-dramas-1042376.html" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;The Independent&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt; helps him make his case by crediting &lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;Connection &lt;/span&gt;with influencing everything from &lt;i&gt;The Wire&lt;/i&gt; to &lt;i&gt;Grand Theft Auto IV&lt;/i&gt;.  “Roughly a third of the way through, gamers are faced with a mission, the Puerto Rican Connection, which emulates the famous chase scene at the heart of Friedkin&amp;#39;s thriller,” writes James Mottram.   “Commandeering a car, just as Gene Hackman&amp;#39;s rogue cop &amp;quot;Popeye&amp;quot; Doyle does, you are asked to trail a target, who boards an elevated train, through the streets of Liberty City (the GTA version of New York)…Unsurprisingly, the 73-year-old Friedkin hasn&amp;#39;t played the game, let alone completed the mission, but he doesn&amp;#39;t seem concerned that the film that launched his career has been ripped off.”

“Joel Surnow, who created &lt;i&gt;24&lt;/i&gt;, told me he was most influenced by &lt;i&gt;The French Connection&lt;/i&gt;,” Friedkin notes, and indeed, until now I had forgotten about the amnesiac cougar subplot in the 1971 Best Picture winner.  It isn’t known whether the creators of &lt;i&gt;CSI &lt;/i&gt;are similarly indebted to the director, but they did hire him to direct an episode – his most recent screen credit to date.  “&amp;quot;It was fun and successful, so they&amp;#39;ve asked me to do another one in January.”

As for &lt;i&gt;The French Connection&lt;/i&gt;, Friedkin plays it modest en route to patting himself on the back.  “We thought we were making a little B picture, a little cops-and-robbers movie. So the fact that it became so celebrated, so memorable, and a standard for the genre – which I realize has been copied over and over again, including its attitudes – was a huge surprise.”  He discounts the Oscar-winning script by Ernest Tidyman, claiming that hardly a word ended up in the mostly ad-libbed movie.  And he takes a shot at &lt;i&gt;Bullitt, Connection&lt;/i&gt;’s most oft-cited competition for the title of greatest car chase on film.  “I don&amp;#39;t think the chase is that great,&amp;quot; claims Friedkin. &amp;quot;What they did basically was clear out the streets of San Francisco and drive these cars over the hills. There were no people on the streets. I decided I had to put the public in jeopardy.”  Good to know.

it&amp;#39;s mapped out all the things it wants to remind you of.&amp;nbsp; It clearly wants to echo the moral ambiguity of &lt;i&gt;The Wire&lt;/i&gt;, the multigenerational sweep of &lt;i&gt;The Godfather&lt;/i&gt;, the close-knit web of loyalty and betrayal of &lt;i&gt;The Departed&lt;/i&gt;.&amp;nbsp; But since it&amp;#39;s O&amp;#39;Connor at the helm instead of the talented folks who brought you those stories, it conjures them in tone only, never in quality, and leaves you asking:&amp;nbsp; haven&amp;#39;t I seen this movie before -- like, &lt;i&gt;a hundred times&lt;/i&gt;?.&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;If O&amp;#39;Connor started out with a script that wasn&amp;#39;t particularly going anywhere, and if he wasn&amp;#39;t especially going to bring anything to the table as the director, he at least gave us some actors with juice to play his family of often-shady New York police officers.&amp;nbsp; Edward Norton, who isn&amp;#39;t the world&amp;#39;s most consistent performer but is occasionally capable of greatness, plays Ray Tierney, a conflicted hard-ass who is divided between fidelity to his insular cop clan and a desire to do the right thing no matter what.&amp;nbsp; This sort of agonized moralist is a specialty of Nortons, but here he just seems sort of bored.&amp;nbsp; Jon Voight, on the other hand, seems to be having a ball as the family&amp;#39;s drunken father figure, and even though the vast majority of his dialogue are windy cliches, he livens up the flick every moment he&amp;#39;s on screen.&amp;nbsp; No such luck with Colin Farrell, toothy at the best of times and absolutely ludicrous here:&amp;nbsp; as bad-boy brother-in-law Jimmy Egan, he might as well be twirling a Snidley Whiplash mustache and tying his wife (named, no kidding, Megan Egan) to a railroad track.&amp;nbsp; &lt;/font&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;i&gt;Pride and Glory&lt;/i&gt; tries for the kind of intensity conjured by movies like &lt;i&gt;Serpico, Donnie Brasco, &lt;/i&gt;and &lt;i&gt;Goodfellas&lt;/i&gt;, which is probably why all its highfalutin talk about honor and loyalty and devotion sound so familiar.&amp;nbsp; But it&amp;#39;s not a comfortable familiarity; it&amp;#39;s a boring one.&amp;nbsp; The movie never really picks up, even in its most action-packed scenes, because it has an unwarranted confidence in the dramatic potential of its plot, and an unjustified trust in the ability of its lead actors to deliver it.&amp;nbsp; Farrell&amp;#39;s goofy performance aside, there&amp;#39;s not that much about it to actively dislike; but there&amp;#39;s certainly not much to like, either.&amp;nbsp; It&amp;#39;s the cinematic equivalent of a Big Mac:&amp;nbsp; At &lt;a href="http://www.salon.com/ent/movies/btm/" target="_blank"&gt;Beyond the Multiplex&lt;/a&gt;, Andrew O’Hehir previews the New York Film Festival.  “Like any institution closely identified with New York City -- the Yankees, the Times, the Metropolitan Museum, the scum-sucking financial establishment that has ruined all of our lives and our children&amp;#39;s as well -- the New York Film Festival makes a pretty easy target for crusading anti-elitists of all stripes…What&amp;#39;s far more interesting about the NYFF after all this time is that it remains remarkably successful at its self-assigned mission, anachronistic and undemocratic as that may appear. In programming relatively few features (28 this year) -- most of them drawn from the major European festivals in Berlin, Cannes and Venice -- and in insisting on a pre-pop-culture vision of cinema as an art form, festival director Richard Peña and his staff have, perversely enough, proven to be shrewd table-setters for the fall film marketplace.”

Erstwhile Screengrabber &lt;a href="http://www.panix.com/%7Edangelo/nyff08.html" target="_blank"&gt;Mike D’Angelo&lt;/a&gt; already has a page of NYFF reviews up, and it sounds like you can scratch &lt;i&gt;Tony Manero&lt;/i&gt; off your list.  “For those not temperamentally inclined to celebrate uncompromising cine-machismo for its own sake, however, this is pretty thin gruel, deeply unpleasant without ever coming within spitting distance of enlightening. Once you&amp;#39;ve been startled by Raúl assisting an old woman home and then unexpectedly pummeling her to death for her TV set, and then seen him pawn the TV in order to fund a replica of the multicolored &lt;i&gt;Saturday Night Fever&lt;/i&gt; dance floor, you&amp;#39;re good to go, literally -- everything that follows is more of the same. &lt;i&gt;American Psycho&lt;/i&gt; didn&amp;#39;t really work as a movie, but at least Bret Easton Ellis had a coherent idea, in that you can readily see the connection between &amp;#39;80s materialism, Bateman&amp;#39;s sadistic violence and the transformation of Genesis into a Phil Collins solo act. How exactly does living under Pinochet translate to disco fever? Why are we watching &lt;i&gt;Tony Manero&lt;/i&gt; and not, say, &lt;i&gt;Roy Neary&lt;/i&gt; or &lt;i&gt;Luke Skywalker&lt;/i&gt;?”

Also weighing in on NYFF is Vadim Rizov at &lt;a href="http://www.thehousenextdooronline.com/2008/09/nyff-46-2008-gomorrah-afterschool.html" target="_blank"&gt;The House Next Door&lt;/a&gt;, who finds &lt;i&gt;Gomorrah&lt;/i&gt; comes up wanting when compared to our favorite TV show.  “The problem with &lt;i&gt;Gomorrah&lt;/i&gt; is that it could start and end anywhere. &lt;i&gt;The Wire&lt;/i&gt; runs full arcs, tying social problems to well-developed characters; the war never ends, but the characters move on. &lt;i&gt;Gomorrah&lt;/i&gt; is representative types running through a loop: today&amp;#39;s Scarface-emulating young sociopaths are tomorrow&amp;#39;s dead meat, but there&amp;#39;ll always be someone to replace them. All five stories in &lt;i&gt;Gomorrah&lt;/i&gt;&amp;#39;s hydra-headed monster have rough conclusions, but anyone expecting a movie about mob life to end in any kind of upbeat fashion a) needs to watch more movies b) needs, indeed, to read up a bit more. &lt;i&gt;Gomorrah&lt;/i&gt; is exactly what I thought it would be, which means there&amp;#39;s no surprises.”

Dazed and Confused&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;Waking Life&lt;/i&gt; star Wiley Wiggins was a regular fixture around Fantastic Fest, and as this entry at his blog &lt;a href="http://wileywiggins.blogspot.com/2008/09/man-from-hong-kong.html" target="_blank"&gt;It’s Not For Everyone&lt;/a&gt; shows, he’s down with the Ozsploitation.  “Brian Trenchard-Smith, fresh from his appearance in&lt;i&gt; Not Quite Hollywood&lt;/i&gt;, introduced and answered questions about one of his very early films, &lt;i&gt;The Man From Hong Kong&lt;/i&gt;. As one might expect from an Australian Kung Fu movie, the driving sequences are better than the fight sequences, and the main car chase in the. Movie is actually one of the most impressive filmed, mainly for the demolition-derby ferocity with which the cars slam into one another and a sureness in the photography and editing during the chase. The acting and plotting are the most memorable when they flirt with self parody. The movie was a lot of fun, but pales in comparison to some of Trenchard-Smith&amp;#39;s crazier films.”

And in List-o-Mania this week, Filmbrain features &lt;a href="http://www.filmbrain.com/filmbrain/2008/09/lost-in-the-six.html#more" target="_blank"&gt;Lost in the Sixties and Seventies: A Dozen I&amp;#39;d Kill to See&lt;/a&gt;.  At number four is the 1971 obscurity &lt;i&gt;You&amp;#39;ve Got to Walk It Like You Talk It or You&amp;#39;ll Lose That Beat&lt;/i&gt;.  “Easily the holiest of grails on the list, this is a film I originally heard about back in the early 80s, but only recently confirmed that it does indeed truly exist. Dig this: an anarchic anti-establishment comedy that skewers then-contemporary mores that stars Zalman King (yes, that one) as a young man trying to find his way in New York City. Add to that a cast that includes Allen Garfield, Richard Pryor, and Roz Kelly (&lt;i&gt;Happy Days&lt;/i&gt;&amp;#39; Pinky Tuscadero), and features music by Steely Dan&amp;#39;s Walter Becker and Donald Fagen. Oh yes, Wes Craven worked on the film as well. I have never met a single soul who can honestly claim to have seen this film, so if you have, please do speak up!”

So who better to mark our return than one of the most enjoyable contemporary character actors?&amp;nbsp; Robert William Hoskins, the short, broad Cockney from Bury St. Edmonds, is one of England&amp;#39;s most beloved actors -- quite unusual given that he&amp;#39;s never had an acting lesson and his first role came purely by accident.&amp;nbsp; At the time, Hoskins was seeking a career as a writer, and supported himself, like most failed artists, by working odd jobs -- in this case, as a warehouse worker.&amp;nbsp; Showing up drunk and a theater to collect a friend who was auditioning for the lead, he was clowning around in the audience and, mistaken for one of the hopefuls by the casting director, he acquitted himself marvelously in the audition and got the part.&amp;nbsp; It cost him a friend, but it launched one of the richest careers in modern British cinema.&amp;nbsp; At 5&amp;#39;6&amp;quot;, stout, and with an unmistakable working-class accent and demeanor, Hoskins is rarely the best-looking man in the room, even when he&amp;#39;s alone; but he&amp;#39;s parlayed his unusual appearance and forceful personality into some electrifying roles.&amp;nbsp; At first known for his ability to play intense and sometimes brutal criminals and assorted villains, he later convinced his agents that he was more diverse than his resume indicated and soon showed an exceptional gift for comedy as well, both verbal and physical.&amp;nbsp; His big break came in 1980, when, after a number of high-profile television appearances, he netted the lead role in &lt;i&gt;The Long Good Friday&lt;/i&gt; (about which see below); it proved to be a turning point in his career, and he&amp;#39;s worked steadily ever since, rarely in a lead role but always worth watching (well, maybe with the exception of &lt;i&gt;Super Mario Brothers&lt;/i&gt;).&amp;nbsp; With both blockbuster films and small independent movies to his credit, Hoskins has proven his diversity, and even now, at age 65, he gets offers that men half his age would envy.&amp;nbsp; Curiously, he has played a number of political leaders from the 1940s and 1950s in his storied career:&amp;nbsp; Churchhill, Mussolini, Krushchev, and Soviet secret police killer Lavrent Beria.&amp;nbsp; Of this phenomenon, Hoskins has said, with typical self-deprecation, &amp;quot;Most dictators were short, fat, middle-aged and hairless.&amp;nbsp; Besides Danny DeVito, there&amp;#39;s only me to play them.&amp;quot;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;b&gt;Where to see Bob Hoskins at his best:&lt;/b&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;THE LONG GOOD FRIDAY&lt;/i&gt; (1980)&lt;/b&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Hoskins&amp;#39; breakout film role came in this gripping, suspenseful gangster movie, which he earned by a stellar performance in Dennis Potter&amp;#39;s fantastic television mini-series &lt;i&gt;Pennies from Heaven&lt;/i&gt;.&amp;nbsp; Playing Harold Shand, a short-tempered and violent British gangster, Hoskins is endlessly fascinating to watch:&amp;nbsp; his character, used to being in complete control, is a textbook case of slow, angry boil as his world begins to completely unravel on what should be the occasion of his greatest triumph.&amp;nbsp; Watching Shand fall to pieces as he thrashes about helplessly, trying to find out who is out to destroy him and why, is one the greatest treats the gangster genre has to offer. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;MONA LISA &lt;/i&gt;(1986)&lt;/b&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Once again returning to the well of British gangster films, Bob Hoskins chose wisely in taking the role of George, a down-on-his-luck ex-convict who, shunned by his former colleagues, can only secure employment as the driver for a high-priced call girl.&amp;nbsp; In a role rife with sexual tension, danger, and class conflict, Hoskins shines as the shy but confident George, whose initial disdain for Cathy Tyson&amp;#39;s Simone grows into respect and finally affection.&amp;nbsp; Considering that he shared the screen with some genuinely great actors -- including Robbie Coltrane, &lt;i&gt;The Wire&lt;/i&gt;&amp;#39;s Clarke Peters, and Michael Caine as a sinister mob boss -- it&amp;#39;s even more impressive how good Hoskins is in this; In this Bob Zemeckis blockbuster (profiled recently in &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2008/08/21/screengrab-salutes-the-top-20-animated-features-films-part-three.aspx"&gt;our look at the greatest animated features of all time&lt;/a&gt;), he plays Eddie Valiant, a hardboiled noir detective in a 1940s version of Los Angeles where cartoons are as alive as anyone else -- though Valiant wishes otherwise when he&amp;#39;s called upon to defend the notorious Roger Rabbit, who&amp;#39;s been framed for murder.&amp;nbsp; We’ve reached that part of the summer when Rainn Wilson comedies and films by Fred Durst are considered top new releases, so it must be time to look ahead to the fall.  Traditionally this is the movie season for Oscar contenders and challenging indie fare, so let’s put away the robots and superhero tights and play a little 3 Up, 3 Down.  (Feel free to weigh in with your own picks, my fellow Screengrabbers – &lt;i&gt;if you dare&lt;/i&gt;.)

&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;
1. Burn After Reading&lt;/b&gt; – &lt;i&gt;No Country for Old Men&lt;/i&gt; was a return to form for the Coens, and we’re all happy they finally got their Oscars.  But it’s been a while since we’ve had a pure shot of that Coen Brothers feeling.  &lt;i&gt;No Country&lt;/i&gt; was adapted from a Cormac McCarthy novel, &lt;i&gt;The Ladykillers&lt;/i&gt; was a remake, and &lt;i&gt;Intolerable Cruelty&lt;/i&gt; originated with other writers.  Based on the trailer, &lt;i&gt;Burn After Reading&lt;/i&gt; looks like a return to the inventive goofiness of &lt;i&gt;The Big Lebowski&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;O Brother Where Art Thou?&lt;/i&gt;, which puts it right in my wheelhouse.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;
2. The Road&lt;/b&gt; – Speaking of Cormac McCarthy, the second adaptation of his work in as many years in due in November.  The grim post-apocalyptic tale is brought to the screen by John Hillcoat, director of &lt;i&gt;The Proposition&lt;/i&gt;, a western that certainly counts McCarthy’s &lt;i&gt;Blood Meridian&lt;/i&gt; among its influences.  Viggo Mortenson has the lead, and the supporting cast includes Charlize Theron, Guy Pearce, Robert Duvall, Garrett Dillahunt and &lt;i&gt;The Wire&lt;/i&gt;’s Omar himself, Michael K. Williams.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;
3. Synecdoche, New York&lt;/b&gt; – Charlie Kaufman’s directorial debut didn’t exactly wow most critics at Cannes, but the guy hasn’t let me down yet.  (Well, &lt;i&gt;Confessions of a Dangerous Mind&lt;/i&gt; didn’t really do it for me, but I’ll blame Sam Rockwell for that.)  Even if it doesn’t really work, the premise – which has theater director Philip Seymour Hoffman building a replica of New York in a warehouse – should provide more of the Kauf’s trademark reality-bending weirdness.

&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;
1. The Day the Earth Stood Still &lt;/b&gt;– Unnecessary remake of a sci-fi classic, with Keanu Reeves as an alien?  The first time I saw this trailer, I thought it was a fake. The second time, I just said “No thanks.”

2. Twilight&lt;/b&gt; – I understand I’m not the target demographic for this “y.a.” phenomenon, but I still resent the fact that it’s in my face everywhere I go these days, and that’s only going to get worse as the release of this adaptation approaches.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;  
3. The Women&lt;/b&gt; – This has got to be the uber-chick flick of the year: Meg Ryan, Annette Bening, Eva Mendes, Bette Midler and Debra Messing in a remake of the George Cukor classic.  If I grow a vagina between now and when it comes out, maybe I’ll reconsider.

Oliver Stone’s &lt;i&gt;W&lt;/i&gt;.  This can’t possibly be any good, can it?  And yet I can’t wait to see it.  We might be looking at a train wreck for the ages here.

/&gt;&lt;/a&gt;After last week’s thin selection of new DVDs, this week brings a number of high-quality releases.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;DVDs of the Week:&lt;/strong&gt; DVDs couldn’t be much different than this week’s two most notable new releases, the Criterion release of Guy Maddin’s &lt;i&gt;Brand Upon the Brain!&lt;/i&gt; and the final season of &lt;i&gt;The Wire&lt;/i&gt; (HBO). But in its own way, each is pretty indispensible. Maddin’s film is, like his entire body of work, indescribable to anyone who hasn’t already seen it, but for those who are on his wavelength, it’s magical. That Criterion has finally embraced this most movie-drunk of filmmakers is exciting enough. But they’ve also gathered half a dozen different narration tracks for the sake of variety, including narration by Isabella Rossellini, Laurie Anderson, Eli Wallach, and Maddin himself. In addition, there’s a new documentary on the director, plus two new short films by Maddin, made especially for this release. So yeah, good news.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But if anything, the release of Season 5 of &lt;i&gt;The Wire&lt;/i&gt; is even more of a cause for celebration. The groundbreaking, critically-acclaimed HBO series has been praised to the heavens in venues both classier and more authoritative than this one, so I’ll refrain from heaping still more effusive praise on a series that hardly needs it. All I can say is, if you haven’t experienced &lt;i&gt;The Wire&lt;/i&gt; yet, you’ve got some great times ahead of you. And if you have, you don’t need me to convince you to buy the final season on DVD.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This week’s recent releases coming to DVD include: Dennis Quaid and Ellen Page in &lt;i&gt;Smart People&lt;/i&gt; (Disney, also Blu-Ray); Stephen Chow’s cockeyed kids’ movie &lt;i&gt;CJ7&lt;/i&gt; (Sony, also Blu-Ray); and Val Kilmer and Stephen Dorff in &lt;i&gt;Felon&lt;/i&gt; (Sony, also Blu-Ray). Also, three DVDs by Lech Majewski: &lt;i&gt;The Garden of Earthly Delights&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;Glass Lips&lt;/i&gt;, and &lt;i&gt;The Gospel According to Harry&lt;/i&gt; (all Kino), the last of which features a young Viggo Mortensen.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In TV on DVD, this week brings &lt;i&gt;South Park Season 11&lt;/i&gt; (Paramount), &lt;i&gt;Prison Break Season 3&lt;/i&gt; (Fox, also Blu-Ray), and &lt;i&gt;Caroline in the City Season 1&lt;/i&gt; (Paramount).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Finally, in Blu-Ray only news, the week’s big release almost certainly has to be Sony’s “Action” Box Set, which includes Jean Claude Van Damme in &lt;i&gt;Maximum Risk&lt;/i&gt;, Steven Seagal in &lt;i&gt;Half Past Dead&lt;/i&gt;, Wesley Snipes in &lt;i&gt;7 Seconds&lt;/i&gt;, and Ice Cube in &lt;i&gt;xXx: State of the Union&lt;/i&gt;. I mean, come on- Van Damme, Seagal, and Snipes all in one box set? The 1993 version of me is stoked. of it. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And yet, even after seven-plus years of the Bush administration, the United States is still, for the most part, a hell of a good country, and next week, as the nation barbecues and cherry bombs itself into a frenzy of patriotism over the 4th of July weekend, we here at the Screengrab will join the celebration with a list of movies that show just exactly how and why America kicks ass. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But &lt;em&gt;this&lt;/em&gt; week, partly in tribute to the passing of beloved comedian (and scathing social critic) George Carlin, we thought we’d take a cinematic tour of the nastier side of the American Empire. From slavery and the near-extermination of the nation’s indigenous population to rampant corporate greed, bigoted religious fanaticism and horrific military fiascos, the U.S. (and its citizens, including me and possibly you) have a lot of skeletons in our collective national closet. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Fortunately, we’ve also managed to (more or less) hang onto that whole freedom of speech thing, resulting in the following films (some by outsiders, but mostly homegrown) that, to paraphrase Toby Keith, put a boot in the American way. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;THE WIRE (2002-2008)&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ed0UxGLay_g&amp;amp;hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="344"&gt;&lt;/embed&gt;&lt;/object&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Again, as with last week’s inclusion of &lt;em&gt;Angels in America&lt;/em&gt; among&amp;nbsp;the &lt;a class="" href="http://nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2008/06/19/the-gay-pride-top-ten-part-one.aspx"&gt;Gay Pride Top Twenty&lt;/a&gt;, I’m cheating a bit, since HBO’s epic, five-season dramatization of the death of the American working class, the devastation wrought by the “War on Drugs,” the failure of inner city public schools, the inherent corruption of organizations and the helplessness of the individuals trapped within them is, technically, “just” a TV show. But, taken as a single, sixty-hour cinematic exposé, David Simon’s epic, multi-layered, deeply human depiction of the drug dealers, junkies, cops, dockworkers, teachers, lawyers, politicians, reporters and regular civilians of modern day Baltimore (and, by extension, Anytown, U.S.A.) trumps just about any movie ever made in its unflinching depiction of the ways that Americans become trapped in their own delusions and systems of organization, allowing hacks and sociopaths (like Jamie Hector’s drug kingpin Marlo Stanfield, Michael Kostroff’s sleazy lawyer Maurice Levy and corrupt cops Herc (Dominic Lombardozzi) and Burrell (Frankie Faison)) to flourish while system-bucking firebrands like Detective McNulty (Dominic West) and Michael K. Williams’ iconic stick-up artist Omar Little are marginalized or destroyed. But, unlike grim civics lessons like the recent slate of doomed Iraq films (typified by Robert Redford’s deadly earnest &lt;em&gt;Lions for Lambs&lt;/em&gt;), &lt;em&gt;The Wire&lt;/em&gt; (even at its most harrowing) was never a slog, thanks to&amp;nbsp;the work&amp;#39;s&amp;nbsp;relentless humor, suspense, virtuoso writing, astonishing performances and, for all its pessimism, a crucial, inspiring sense of&amp;nbsp;gratitude for&amp;nbsp;the men and women (like Sonja Sohn and Wendell Pierce as “good police” Kima Greggs and “Bunk” Moreland, Deirdre Lovejoy’s tough, incorruptible state’s attorney Rhonda Pearlman and Jim True-Frost’s ex-cop turned schoolteacher “Prez” Pryzbylewski) who somehow manage to keep their heads down, plug away and, ultimately, hold the world together for the rest of us. (Now if only the not-racist-at-all Emmy voters would notice and &lt;em&gt;finally&lt;/em&gt; honor &lt;em&gt;The Wire&lt;/em&gt; with at least &lt;em&gt;one friggin’ award&lt;/em&gt;.) &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;DOGVILLE (2003)&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/8rPllm4WEXw&amp;amp;hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="344"&gt;&lt;/embed&gt;&lt;/object&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Lars Von Trier&amp;#39;s &lt;em&gt;Dogville&lt;/em&gt; (the first of his proposed – and still uncompleted – &amp;quot;U.S.A. – Land of Opportunities&amp;quot; trilogy) certainly got the job done in terms of provocation. Von Trier, already one of the most controversial and divisive directors working today, sure wasn&amp;#39;t going to win a lot of friends on this side of the Atlantic when he announced, not long after September 11, 2001, his intention of making three films whose intent was to turn a gimlet eye on some of the ugliest aspects of American culture. And when &lt;em&gt;Dogville&lt;/em&gt; was released, it had a polarizing effect almost immediately: for everyone who praised its uniformly excellent cast, its stark, eerie direction, and its brilliantly minimalist set design (which served as an unsettling visual reference to that most all-American of plays, Thornton Wilder&amp;#39;s &lt;em&gt;Our Town&lt;/em&gt;), there was someone who condemned its inflammatory rhetoric, its brutal tone, and its determination to poke at the festering sores of everything bad about America, from racism to sexism to crime to class inequity. Some critics – no names, no pack drill – apparently became so unhinged over the movie that they spoke of it in terms better suited to hate crimes, or even war crimes, than to movie reviews. But the deeply dividing effect that &lt;em&gt;Dogville&lt;/em&gt; had on audiences and critics may have proven nothing more than the fact that the reaction Von Trier gets out of his movies is exactly the reaction that he wants. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;ROGER AND ME (1989)&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/xPNmHPjkxdk&amp;amp;hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="344"&gt;&lt;/embed&gt;&lt;/object&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;No list of films critical of America could be complete without a Michael Moore documentary (strangely enough, no one at Screengrab headquarters was lobbying for &lt;i&gt;Canadian Bacon&lt;/i&gt;), so it was only a matter of choosing &lt;em&gt;which&lt;/em&gt; one. In the end, there was no real choice. &lt;i&gt;Fahrenheit 9/11&lt;/i&gt; may be the most incendiary grenade Moore has lobbed, but it&amp;#39;s marred with some cable access-level conspiracy mongering. In both &lt;i&gt;The Big One&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;Bowling for Columbine&lt;/i&gt;, the messenger overwhelms the message. And I&amp;#39;ll confess I haven&amp;#39;t seen &lt;i&gt;Sicko&lt;/i&gt; yet – I&amp;#39;m simply Michael Moore-d out. But that wasn&amp;#39;t the case back in 1989, when &lt;i&gt;Roger and Me&lt;/i&gt; arrived in theaters as a most unlikely breath of fresh air. How unlikely? Here was a film released by a major American corporation (Warner Bros.) openly criticizing another major American corporation (General Motors) for its outrageous treatment of its employees. Here was a movie about the economic devastation wrought on an American city by the closing of its auto plants – and it was &lt;i&gt;funny&lt;/i&gt;. Moore hadn&amp;#39;t worn out his welcome, because we didn&amp;#39;t know who the hell he was; he was just this shambling schlub in a ballcap trying to get an audience with GM CEO Roger Smith to find out why his hometown of Flint was being put through the wringer. If his shtick has long since grown stale, it was fresh then, enlivened by such real-life characters as Deputy Fred (who tries to evict the newly unemployed in the friendliest possible way) and the woman who offers rabbits in two varieties: &amp;quot;Pets or Meat.&amp;quot; We know now about the manipulations of chronology (Horrors! In a &lt;i&gt;movie&lt;/i&gt;?) and many of us have soured on Moore&amp;#39;s self-aggrandizing style, but the impact and influence of &lt;i&gt;Roger and Me&lt;/i&gt; on documentary film – for better and for worse – cannot be overstated. And if you lost your job on the assembly line and nobody gave a shit, you&amp;#39;d probably be grateful to have a high-profile advocate – even a self-righteous schlub in a ballcap. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;BLOW OUT (1981)&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

Hoberman called Brian De Palma&amp;#39;s conspiracy movie the last great film of the 1960s, even though it was released during the first summer of the Reagan administration -- a moment that it also memorializes quite well in its own sick way. Set in Philadelphia, De Palma&amp;#39;s picture stars John Travolta as a motion picture sound man who inadvertently records the gunshot that sends a car containing a potential presidential candidate and a hooker (Nancy Allen) into a river, killing the politician. Another figure, a photographer played by Dennis Franz, claims to have recorded the crash in a series of photos that are published in a national magazine. Meanwhile, the man who shot out the tire -- Burke, played by John Lithgow -- is committing a series of murders so that he can take out the Nancy Allen character and make it look like the work of a serial killer the papers have dubbed &amp;quot;the Liberty Bell Strangler.&amp;quot; Not satisfied with this amalgam of Chappaquiddick, the Zapruder film, and G. Gordon Liddy gone off the reservation, De Palma invented his own bogus patriotic holiday, &amp;quot;Liberty Day&amp;quot;, so that he could show his hero failing to save the heroine against a backdrop of oblivious citizens garishly celebrating the country whose promise we in the audience can see openly turning to criminal rot. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;THE CANDIDATE (1972)&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/9K78U6XsHsg&amp;amp;hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="344"&gt;&lt;/embed&gt;&lt;/object&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Robert Redford uses his Kennedyesque qualities -- &amp;quot;Kennedyesque&amp;quot; having once been code for anyone really good-looking who might plausibly read his subscription copy of &lt;em&gt;Newsweek &lt;/em&gt;-- as a double-edged sword in this collaboration between a director, Michael Ritchie, with a special knack for throwaway slapstick and bits of offbeat Americana and a screenwriter, Jeremy Larner, who was regarded as a walking mother lode of inside political knowledge from his having worked as a screenwriter for Eugene McCarthy&amp;#39;s 1968 presidential campaign. The film has plenty to say about the importance of money and image, at the expense of substance, in American politics, though what really sets it apart is the absolute hopelessness that comes attached to its cheerful, Zippy-like grin. Redford&amp;#39;s Bill McKay is the son of an former governor and old-style pol (Melvyn Douglas) who, thanks to watching his father at work, knows that nothing can be achieved through conventional politics and so works as a liberal lawyer for good causes. He&amp;#39;s talked into running against the despicable old conservative incumbent Crocker Jarmon (Don Porter) so that he can shake up the campaign and bring attention to the real issues he favors; he signs on with the understanding that he can&amp;#39;t possibly win. But when he does so badly that he risks becoming a joke, he agrees to let the handlers polish the rough edges on his campaign style, and damned if he doesn&amp;#39;t end up winning -- after which he turns to his chief handler (Peter Boyle) and asks, in a state of mild panic, &amp;quot;What do we do now?&amp;quot; Other movies in this period, such as &lt;em&gt;The Parallax View&lt;/em&gt; and &lt;em&gt;Executive Action&lt;/em&gt;, jumped on the JFK-assassination-theory bandwagon and took it on faith that if anybody decent ever ran for office in this country, the big boys would have him whacked. &lt;em&gt;The Candidate&lt;/em&gt;&amp;#39;s Nader-esque attitude -- that politics is such a total shuck that nobody decent would ever get involved with and if, by some accident,&amp;nbsp;they did, the compromises&amp;nbsp;they&amp;#39;d have&amp;nbsp;to agree to would reduce&amp;nbsp;them to a dithering nothing -- seems less doom-laden on the surface but is actually much worse, if only because so many intelligent people find it irresistable as a reason for bowing out of political engagement altogether. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Click here for &lt;a class="" href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2008/06/26/america-the-critical-15-movies-that-show-what-s-wrong-with-u-s-part-two.aspx"&gt;Part Two&lt;/a&gt; &lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
I’m not the world’s biggest fan of writer-director-cottage industry Tyler Perry.  I know he’s got a loyal following that will fill theaters every time he serves up his patented mix of sermonizing, self-help platitudes and ham-handed ensemble comedy, and I’m fine with that.  It just so happens he makes the sort of movies that are the exact opposite of anything I’d find entertaining.  But having said that, I would gladly sit through a triple bill of &lt;i&gt;Diary of a Mad Black Woman&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;Daddy’s Little Girls&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;Why Did I Get Married? &lt;/i&gt;if it meant I would never have to see &lt;i&gt;First Sunday &lt;/i&gt;again.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
You know Perry has truly arrived when the cheap imitations of his work start showing up, and that’s what we have here, despite an ad campaign designed to trick the slow-witted into thinking &lt;i&gt;First Sunday&lt;/i&gt; is the latest installment in Ice Cube’s &lt;i&gt;Friday&lt;/i&gt; series.  In a way, that’s not fair to writer-director David E. Talbert, whose work in African-American theater on such plays as &lt;i&gt;The Fabric of a Man&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;He Say…She Say…But What Does GOD Say? &lt;/i&gt;actually predates Perry’s career.  But it’s clear that the success of Perry’s movies opened the door for more of these inspirational urban comedies.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Mr. Cube (as the &lt;i&gt;New York Times&lt;/i&gt; calls him) and Tracy Morgan play two goofballs from the Baltimore ’hood who can’t seem to hold down a job or stay out of trouble with the law.  The first few scenes are so rushed and technically inept that it’s hard to be sure, but it appears that Cube and Morgan get involved in a scam to sell stolen wheelchairs on behalf of some Jamaican gangsters, then get caught and sentenced to 5000 hours of community service.  (Even Bubbles from &lt;i&gt;The Wire&lt;/i&gt; wouldn’t bother with these jackasses.)    This is the last straw for Cube’s baby-momma Omunique (Regina Hall).  Unless the Ice Man comes up with $17,000 to finance her beauty shop, she’s moving to Atlanta with their son.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
There’s only one obvious solution to this dilemma, which is, of course, to rob a church.  Unfortunately, Cube and Morgan undertake this task while a meeting is in progress, and soon find themselves holding pews full of kindly church ladies hostage.  At this point, lame slapstick comedy is replaced by preachy tedium as the befuddled pastor (Chi McBride) and his flock go to work on these two miscreants.  The only point of interest is the flamboyant choir director played by Katt Williams, who walks a fine line between mincing gay stereotype and recently arrived space alien.  Another way to differentiate Talbert’s film from the&lt;i&gt; Friday&lt;/i&gt; series: the chances of a &lt;i&gt;Next Sunday&lt;/i&gt; would appear remote.

&lt;embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/OYFYumKhtE0&amp;amp;hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="344"&gt;&lt;/embed&gt;&lt;/object&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull&lt;/em&gt; is a fine example of the way &lt;a class="" href="http://nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2008/05/12/cgi-must-die.aspx"&gt;lazy, excessive reliance on ridiculous CGI&lt;/a&gt; (and CGI monkeys) can ruin an otherwise passable movie. And there’s no finer argument for the good ol’ fashioned &lt;em&gt;non&lt;/em&gt;-CGI pleasures of real world filmmaking than the Nepalese bar sequence in the original &lt;em&gt;Raiders of the Lost Ark&lt;/em&gt;. To recap: winsome badass Karen Allen (oh, Hollywood, &lt;em&gt;HOW&lt;/em&gt; did you ever let her get away?) drinks a yak-herder under the table, then her flaky ex-boyfriend shows up while she’s all full o’ rotgut and she slaps him&amp;nbsp;in the face and sends him on his way.&amp;nbsp;And &lt;em&gt;THEN&lt;/em&gt;,&amp;nbsp;creepy Nazi torturer Toht (a.k.a. Mr. Melty-Face) shows up with a bunch of evil minions and things &lt;em&gt;really&lt;/em&gt; get interesting.&amp;nbsp; What follows is a master class in cinematic action, pacing, camera placement, stuntwork, pyrotechnics, performance and editing...all without a bluescreen (or hangover) in sight. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;ON_LINE (2002)&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/WQBcbp84Puk&amp;amp;hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="344"&gt;&lt;/embed&gt;&lt;/object&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Okay, so maybe I’m biased, given that I co-wrote this one (with director Jed Weintrob), but I’ve always had a soft spot for the scene in this under-the-radar internet sex comedy where neurotic shut-in John (Josh Hamilton) goes to an odious, overpriced Manhattan nightclub on a disastrous double-date with Jordan (Vanessa Ferlito), the wild cybersex enthusiast he picked up on the internet, his oversexed roommate, Moe (Harold Perrineau, Jr.) and Moe’s pill-popping, manic-depressive girlfriend (Isabel Gillies). But don’t take my word for it: in a &lt;em&gt;Salon&lt;/em&gt; review that (almost but not quite) made up for any number of really quite nasty reviews of the film, the extremely cultured and discerning Andrew O&amp;#39;Hehir summed up the appeal of the scene thusly: “John&amp;#39;s nightclub internal monologue, as he watches Jordan dance and reflects on how hot she is, how shallow he is for thinking that and how little chance he has of actually getting in her pants in the off-line world, is probably the movie&amp;#39;s high point.” Thanks, Mr. O’Hehir...I couldn’ t have said it better myself! &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;BLAZING SADDLES (1974)&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/6-pmpgrYQgs&amp;amp;hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="344"&gt;&lt;/embed&gt;&lt;/object&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Before that dastardly Hedley Lamar (played with nefarious gusto by the late Harvey Korman) decided to run the railroad through it, the hamlet of Rock Ridge in Mel Brooks’ &lt;em&gt;Blazing Saddles&lt;/em&gt; had everything an Old West town needed: a church, a hoosegow for when Mongo came to town, and proximity to the Hollywood Hills. And, of course, it had its own saloon. But unlike most of the filthy, rowdy joints in the history of westerns, this particular saloon was always kept nice and clean, thanks to the stewardship of the unfortunately named Anal Johnson. All that came to an end, however, with the arrival of the Teutonic songbird Lili von Shtupp, played with Dietrichian élan by the Oscar-nominated Madeline Kahn. Lili’s world-weary act, sweet set of curves, and foul-mouthed stage patter (“Why don’t you get your friggin’ feet off the stage?”) brings every rough rider in the county, but it’s her love of that delicious &lt;em&gt;schnitzengruben&lt;/em&gt; that leads Lamar to hire her to seduce and abandon Bart, the new sheriff in town. In one of the most memorable scenes ever set in an Old West saloon, Lili sighs out “I’m Tired” before being carried off, James Brown-style, by her backup dancers and deposited in the arms of Sheriff Bart – who, it turns out, has more &lt;em&gt;schnitzengruben&lt;/em&gt; than she can handle. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;THE NINTH CONFIGURATION (1980) &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

But William Peter Blatty’s disturbing cult hit &lt;em&gt;The Ninth Configuration&lt;/em&gt; is no typical action movie, and the bar fight won’t play out in a typical way. The set-up to the scene is more complex than it seems: mentally disturbed former astronaut Billy Cutshaw (Scott Wilson), disillusioned that sensitive psychiatrist Col. Vincent Kane (Stacy Keach) has turned out to be a blood-soaked Marine Corps commando, escapes from an asylum and seeks refuge in liquor at the nameless biker bar. A combination of booze, despair and a smart mouth enrages the boss bikers (the unstable brute Stanley and the cunning, sadistic Richard, played by the gaunt, devil-faced Richard Lynch), who abuse Cutshaw until Kane arrives to rescue him. Kane, who has forsaken violence and taken up the mantle of the caring, well-meaning shrink in order to bury his own murderous past, attempts to come to a peaceful resolution, but finally he can take no more. The scene that follows is one of the most stunning bar fights every captured on film – although to call it a fight ignores what truly happens: Kane utterly annihilates the biker gang in a matter of seconds, killing a number of them. It’s an astonishing scene, and even more astonishing is the fact that it’s not even the climax of &lt;em&gt;The Ninth Configuration&lt;/em&gt;. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;THE FRENCH CONNECTION (1971)&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

It&amp;#39;s easy to imagine the conversation among the patrons of the Harlem bar that Popeye raids after he&amp;#39;s stormed in and out like a hurricane: &amp;quot;That fellow was certainly flippant, wasn&amp;#39;t he? I&amp;#39;m a fervent supporter of our boys in blue, but speaking as an amateur observer of the law enforcement process, I can&amp;#39;t help feeling that some of that flippancy was unwarranted! Here, help me tie off this tourniquet?&amp;quot; The raid, which is actually a cover for a meeting in the men&amp;#39;s room between Popeye and an informant, establishes Popeye&amp;#39;s adversarial relationship to the city&amp;#39;s civilian population, his casual racism, and the gleefully sadistic tinge to his brutality. (Obliged to rough up his informant so that no one will suspect the guy is a rat, Popeye asks him, &amp;quot;Where do you want it?&amp;quot; The man thinks about it for a second and points to his right cheek, and Popeye slugs him on his left. The blow looks hard enough to crack the guy&amp;#39;s jaw, but this is Popeye when he&amp;#39;s just playing.) In &lt;a class="" href="http://www.reason.com/news/show/125309.html"&gt;a recent interview in &lt;em&gt;Reason&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/a&gt;, Ed Burns, the twenty-year veteran of the Baltimore Police Department turned TV writer whose HBO series &lt;em&gt;The Wire&lt;/em&gt; dismantled the logic behind the nation&amp;#39;s &amp;quot;war on drugs&amp;quot;, called the scene &amp;quot;iconic&amp;quot; and blamed it for instilling the wrong mindset in a generation of cops by &amp;quot;put[ting] out the idea of this guy who cracks heads,&amp;quot; Popeye set police work back by reinforcing the idea that cops should act like swaggering badasses instead of establishing a functional relationship with their communities. One of the great strengths of the show was its dynamite ensemble cast -- there wasn&amp;#39;t a bad actor on the show, and it was a character actor&amp;#39;s dream.&amp;nbsp; Very few of the urban drama&amp;#39;s regulars were established name actors; Frankie Faison, who played the politically adept police commissioner Ervin Burrell, was probably the best-known face to moviegoers from his appearances in the Hannibal Lecter films.&amp;nbsp; And although the series gave a lot of otherwise unknown talents a chance to shine, a lot of fans wondered if their success on &lt;i&gt;The Wire&lt;/i&gt; would translate to roles elsewhere.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;a href="http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2008/05/the_wire_alumni_watch_it_pays.html"&gt;As &lt;i&gt;New York&lt;/i&gt; magazine&amp;#39;s Vulture blog reports&lt;/a&gt;, after a few rough patches, at least a few &lt;i&gt;Wire &lt;/i&gt;alums are going on to prominent roles outside the confines of HBO:&amp;nbsp; Amy Ryan, after an Oscar-nominated role in &lt;i&gt;Gone Baby Gone&lt;/i&gt;, is now a series regular on &lt;i&gt;The Office&lt;/i&gt;; Lance Reddick is appearing in &lt;i&gt;Lost&lt;/i&gt; and on the big screen in &lt;i&gt;Fringe&lt;/i&gt;; Jamie Hector will have a recurring role on &lt;i&gt;Heroes&lt;/i&gt; next season; Gbenga Akinnagbe appears in the remake of &lt;i&gt;The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3&lt;/i&gt;; Idris Elba (who was so compelling as the drug kingpin Stringer Bell) will be in both &lt;i&gt;Rocknrolla &lt;/i&gt;and &lt;i&gt;The Unborn&lt;/i&gt;; Tristan Wilds, who was fantastic as corner kid turned stick-up boy Michael Lee, will be in (of all things) the upcoming &lt;i&gt;Beverly Hills 90210 &lt;/i&gt;TV series; series star Dominic West will be in the sequel to &lt;i&gt;The Punisher&lt;/i&gt;; and Michael K. Williams, arguably &lt;i&gt;The Wire&lt;/i&gt;&amp;#39;s most charismatic actor as the thuglife Robin Hood named Omar, will be appearing in high-profile roles in Spike Lee&amp;#39;s WWII epic &lt;i&gt;Miracle at St. Anna&lt;/i&gt; and the eagerly anticipated big-screen adaptation of Cormac McCarthy&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;The Road&lt;/i&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Which is all well and good, but if Robert F. While your quaint little Iraq documentaries and mumblecore movies were unspooling at South by Southwest, the big guns of the movie industry were gathering for ShoWest in Las Vegas.  The annual exhibitors convention is all about putting butts in the seats – and making sure the seats are available for said butts by flying in superstars to grin and glad hand with theater owners and show a few clips from their upcoming product.  None of your faithful Screengrab scribes were able to attend this year, but fortunately &lt;a href="http://hollywoodinsider.ew.com/showest/index.html" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;i&gt;Entertainment Weekly&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/a&gt; was on hand to run down the highlights for us.  
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;
3-D Animation:  &lt;/b&gt;Two upcoming 3-D animated features were previewed.  The Belgian-made (but English language) &lt;i&gt;Fly Me to the Moon&lt;/i&gt; “follows three adorable house flies who hitch a ride on Apollo 11 during the first moon landing in 1969…Even ordinarily mundane things — e.g. shards of glass flying through weightless space or dust being kicked up under Neil Armstrong&amp;#39;s boots — appear remarkably realistic when seen through those plastic 3-D specs.”  &lt;i&gt;EW&lt;/i&gt; was even more impressed with the “Ultimate 3-D” footage from Dreamworks Animation’s &lt;i&gt;Monsters vs. Aliens&lt;/i&gt;, “which has the effect of bringing the viewer into the world of the movie, rather than having stuff pop off the screen. (Really, you have to see it to believe it.)”
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;b&gt;
The Dark Knight&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/i&gt;:  Both director &lt;a href="http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20184781,00.html" target="_blank"&gt;Christopher Nolan&lt;/a&gt; and star &lt;a href="http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20184780,00.html" target="_blank"&gt;Christian Bale&lt;/a&gt; are interviewed.  Nolan talked about raising the bar for the &lt;i&gt;Batman Begins&lt;/i&gt; follow-up:  “I&amp;#39;d never done a sequel — kind of never imagined I would; it&amp;#39;s not something I had really seen myself doing. Even, on completing the first one, it has a great tease for the Joker, but I just wanted to send the audience out with a sense of possibility for what we might see, not specifically as a sequel. It took me a long time to come around, talking to [&lt;i&gt;Batman Begins&lt;/i&gt; cowriter] David Goyer and Jonathan, my brother [and frequent collaborator], to figure out that, actually, there&amp;#39;s something very compelling there. So what I&amp;#39;ve tried to do with this film, the only reason was to try and make the best film in the first place. And the great sequels that I&amp;#39;ve enjoyed and looked up to over the years have managed to do that — there aren&amp;#39;t many of them. You know, whether you&amp;#39;re looking at &lt;i&gt;The Godfather Part II &lt;/i&gt;or &lt;i&gt;The Empire Strikes Back&lt;/i&gt; — those are sequels that I think built on what the first ones did really amazingly well. And that&amp;#39;s what we&amp;#39;re aspiring to with this film.”  Meanwhile, Bale is ready for more: “I would, knowing the &lt;i&gt;Dark Knight&lt;/i&gt; story, I would like very much to complete a trilogy. And I think that knowing the story of &lt;i&gt;The Dark Knight&lt;/i&gt;, it leaves you anticipating something that really can get very, very interesting for a third.”

The Clone Wars&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/i&gt;: A &lt;a href="http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20184842,00.html" target="_blank"&gt;George Lucas interview&lt;/a&gt; finds the &lt;i&gt;Star Wars&lt;/i&gt; maven anticipating the upcoming animated &lt;i&gt;Clone Wars&lt;/i&gt; feature and series, as well as a separate live-action TV serial set between episodes three and four of the movies.  “Some of the characters from the features find their way in there, so it&amp;#39;s not completely divorced. It&amp;#39;s as if we just went down the street and told a different story. You know, we were doing, I don&amp;#39;t know, &lt;i&gt;24&lt;/i&gt;, and now we&amp;#39;re going to move down the street here and do &lt;i&gt;The Wire&lt;/i&gt;. Same thing, it&amp;#39;s just different people doing the same thing in the same city.”  George Lucas’s &lt;i&gt;The Wire&lt;/i&gt;?  We’ll believe it when we see it.

&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;Review by Bryan Whitefield.&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;When &lt;em&gt;City of God &lt;/em&gt;was released in 2002, it became an international sensation for its mix of stylized violence and gritty portrayal of life in the Brazilian favelas. It launched the career of director Fernando Mereilles, who used the same location and several of the non-professional actors from the film to create an episodic series for Brazilian TV called &lt;em&gt;City of Men&lt;/em&gt;. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The show was much more light-hearted than the original film, following the day-to-day exploits of lovable teenagers Acerola and Laranjinha whose various schemes ranged from selling popsicles to losing their virginity. Capturing a more hopeful spirit while never turning a blind eye to violence and harsh conditions, the show also gave audiences a chance to watch the two boys literally grow up on camera. In many ways it covered similar territory to season four of HBO&amp;#39;s &lt;em&gt;The Wire —&lt;/em&gt; kids living under difficult circumstances with no guidance, failed by social institutions and finding an alternative in community-minded drug dealers who at least offer a path to money and mobility. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The film &lt;em&gt;City of Men&lt;/em&gt; was written and directed by Paolo Morelli, who helmed several of the show&amp;#39;s episodes, and maintains the show&amp;#39;s looseness and vibrancy, highlighting the contradiction between Brazil&amp;#39;s incredible beauty and nearly unimaginable poverty, crime and violence. Picking up where the show left off, we find the two friends forced to face an early adulthood. Acerola is now a father himself, while Laranjinha is consumed with uncovering the identity of the father he never knew. Because of the dire conditions that surround them, the story has a built-in drama and the characters are forced into difficult, even critical decisions. Last week we focused on Ving Rhames, and this week, we&amp;#39;re taking a look at the man recently voted Most Likely To Be Mistaken For Ving Rhames: Delroy Lindo. Born in London to a family of Jamaican ancestry, Lindo&amp;#39;s facial similarities to Rhames, along with his powerful physique and tendency to portray gangsters, drug dealers and other low-lifes, has often led to confusion between the two. But while Rhames&amp;#39; on-screen style is smooth, calculating and understated, Lindo tends towards the edgy, the explosive, the half-mad. After making his first major film (&lt;i&gt;More American Graffiti&lt;/i&gt;) in 1979, Delroy Lindo didn&amp;#39;t make another film for a decade, preferring to focus on the stage roles to which he still occasionally returns; he earned widespread praise (and Tony nominations) for his work in Athol Fugard&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;Master Harold and the Boys&lt;/i&gt; and Joe Turner&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;Come and Gone&lt;/i&gt;. When he finally returned to the big screen, he found his biggest proponent in America&amp;#39;s most prominent black director: Spike Lee cast him in a number of memorable roles, and even handed him the role of family man Woody Carmichael in &lt;i&gt;Crooklyn&lt;/i&gt; — a thinly veiled portrait of Lee&amp;#39;s own father. Despite his frequent portrayal of criminal thugs, Lindo imbues even his most brutal characters with a rind of humanity, and has equally excelled at playing patriarchs, professionals, and even the odd romantic lead. One of his least-appreciated performances was a natural and charismatic turn as legendary Negro League pitcher Satchel Paige in the TV movie &lt;i&gt;Soul of the Game&lt;/i&gt;; the NAACP, at least, liked him enough to hand him an Image Award for the film. Lindo&amp;#39;s film career has been quiet of late; after landing his first major television role (aside from an enjoyable performance as a frustrated social worker in the &amp;quot;Brawl in the Family&amp;quot; episode of &lt;i&gt;The Simpsons&lt;/i&gt;) in the short-lived thriller &lt;i&gt;Kidnapped&lt;/i&gt;, he&amp;#39;s preferred to focus exclusively on his work in the theatre, appearing in major roles in London and on Broadway and even in Toronto, where he lived for some time. However, at 55 years old, Lindo is at precisely the age when immense opportunities can open up for character actors of his skill and demeanor. We&amp;#39;d hate to think that he&amp;#39;ll make us wait another ten years before his next big-screen appearance. &lt;/font&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;b&gt;Where to see Delroy Lindo at his best:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt;MALCOLM X &lt;/i&gt;(1992)&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Delroy Lindo&amp;#39;s first major film appearance after his decade-long exile from motion pictures was Spike Lee&amp;#39;s epic biography of the black nationalist leader Malcolm X. His turn as West Indian Archie, the Boston numbers runner with the photographic memory for whom young Malcolm worked, was by turns fearsome and pathetic, perfectly conveying the sense of loss and rage that Malcolm felt at the degradation of blacks in America. It&amp;#39;s one of the most memorable performances in a movie full of them, and it served to make Lindo&amp;#39;s reputation as a character to watch out for.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;CLOCKERS&lt;/i&gt; (1995)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Soon after casting Lindo in &lt;i&gt;Crooklyn&lt;/i&gt;, Spike Lee gave Delroy Lindo his third choice role in a row as the sinister drug lord Rodney Little. Although the movie has since become notable as the big-screen debut of Mekhi Phifer, it&amp;#39;s Lindo who steals the show as Rodney: as is typical of his portrayal of criminals and undesirables, he charges the role with unmistakable emotion and humanity, especially in the scenes where he innocently plays with model trains after ordering the death of his subordinates. One of Lee&amp;#39;s most underrated movies, &lt;i&gt;Clockers&lt;/i&gt; is anchored by Lindo&amp;#39;s role in a story that strongly presages the urban realism of &lt;i&gt;The Wire&lt;/i&gt;. &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/02/16-22/lindo2.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/02/16-22/lindo2.jpg" align="left" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;GET SHORTY &lt;/i&gt;(1996) &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/p&gt;The second installment of John Travolta&amp;#39;s umpteenth career comeback was this slight but enjoyable Barry Sonnenfeld adaptation of an Elmore Leonard novel. While Travolta&amp;#39;s Chili Palmer is the star of the show, it&amp;#39;s Delroy Lindo as the L.A. gangster Bo &amp;quot;The Cat&amp;quot; Catlett who gets most of the movie&amp;#39;s best lines. Diverging from his usual mode of instilling his thugs with a redeeming sliver of decency or vulnerability, here Lindo goes for flat-out humor, and proves himself to be a rather able screen comedian. That’s the picture Randy Newman painted in his 1977 song “Baltimore,” and it hasn’t gotten much better for Charm City since then – at least, not as far as its portrayal in the popular culture is concerned.  Nowadays the city is best known as the setting of &lt;i&gt;The Wire&lt;/i&gt;, this week’s season premiere of which was greeted with the customary round of “greatest TV show ever” reviews, as well as the usual grumbling from residents that the program tends not to portray their home as a nice place to visit, live or even think about.

To add insult to injury, the wasteland that is the January movie release schedule today serves up the execrable &lt;a href="http://www.nervepop.com/filmlounge/review/firstsunday/index.aspx" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;i&gt;First Sunday&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/a&gt;, a Tyler Perry knockoff starring Ice Cube and Tracy Morgan as a couple of B-more bad boys who decide to rob a church stocked with dismaying stereotypes.  
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
It’s not so much that Baltimore has never been treated right by the movies – it’s that it’s rarely been treated at all.  If Barry Levinson and John Waters had gone into accounting or narcotics distribution, we might never have seen the city on the screen, but instead they have both used Baltimore as their respective canvases, to very different effect.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Levinson’s Baltimore is primarily nostalgic and gentle; there’s not a whole lot of slingin’ on the corners of Liberty Heights or Avalon.  Instead, it’s “a little place where people gather to enjoy the banquet of life”:

That’s a little more Chamber of Commerce friendly than &lt;i&gt;The Wire&lt;/i&gt;, and although Levinson doesn’t shy away from the sticky issue of race relations in his hometown, it’s hard to imagine Marlo or Snoop finding much to identify with in this clip from &lt;i&gt;Liberty Heights&lt;/i&gt;:

John Waters also took a nostalgic look at Baltimore’s racial divide in &lt;i&gt;Hairspray&lt;/i&gt;, but that’s about the only point of comparison between the two directors’ depictions of the city.  Not many things could scare the corner boys of &lt;i&gt;The Wire&lt;/i&gt;, but here’s a sight that could do it:

So you can see why it’s been hard for the good citizens of Baltimore to hold onto their dignity when all the world thinks their city is nothing but a teeming cesspool of run-down row houses, drug dealers and oversized drag clowns with slabs of meat clenched between their thighs. But cheer up, Baltimore! Somebody loves you:
