&lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2009/05/stardust.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2009/05/stardust.jpg" align="right" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;i&gt;“Summer movie” is one of those phrases like “beach novel” or “toilet wine” that causes an immediate, involuntary adjustment of our expectations. (I was going to say “lowering of expectations,” but we make some mighty tasty toilet wine here at Screengrab headquarters.) When we hear “summer movie,” we think of explosions or aliens or exploding aliens, even though by Hollywood’s calendar, there is no time of year that isn’t appropriate for movies about exploding aliens. But by that same token, there are summer movies that feature hardly any exploding aliens at all. To kick off the season, the New York Times asked several motion picture luminaries to ruminate on their favorite summer movies, with surprising results.&lt;/i&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;i&gt;Paradise&lt;/i&gt; director Michael Almereyda’s selection isn’t that far off the beaten path, aside from the fact that it was actually released in March.  “A summery, in-between-jobs listlessness floated me into a weekday matinee of &lt;i&gt;The Matrix&lt;/i&gt; 10 years ago. I wasn’t expecting much… There’s no way to summarize the plot without acknowledging its silliness or without then giving the writers/directors — the Wachowski brothers — their due for the precision and seductive power of every image, every scene, every gravity-defying action sequence. But the movie gathers true conviction and soul, I think, from the underrated performances of Mr. Reeves and his sorrowful, symmetrically hard-edged co-star, Carrie-Anne Moss.”

Lynn Shelton, director of the excellent indie &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2009/03/17/sxsw-review-humpday.aspx" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;i&gt;Humpday&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/a&gt;, makes a more idiosyncratic choice.  “How I yearned, during the summers I lived in New York, to just get out of that overheated, overanxious city every once in a while, to meander aimlessly along an esplanade in some quiet seaside spot, the gentle breeze ruffling the hair at the back of my neck. Woody Allen’s &lt;i&gt;Stardust Memories&lt;/i&gt; provides the quintessential backdrop for a New Yorker’s escapist fantasies: a sleepy little film festival at the shore, where the besieged filmmaker Sandy Bates has been invited to attend a retrospective of his work. Although the soothing qualities of the place are not immediately accessible to our hero, once he does manage to give his swarming, rabid fans the slip, you can practically taste the salt in the air and hear the lapping of the waves in the middle distance.”

And yet, just yesterday, the famously unimpeachable &lt;a class="" href="http://perezhilton.com/2009-04-27-reclusive-matrix-director-spotted"&gt;Perez Hilton&lt;/a&gt; posted the following frumpy photo of alleged lady Lana Wachowski, speculating the erstwhile Larry had, indeed, transitioned full-time into the land of estrogen. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2009/04/wachowski.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2009/04/wachowski.jpg" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We here at the Screengrab, of course, like a good sex-change rumor as much as anyone. There is a young man, different from other young men. Ancient prophecies foretell his coming, and he performs miraculous feats. Eventually, confronted by his enemies, he must sacrifice his own life—an act that saves mankind from calamity—but in a mystery as great as that of his origin, he is reborn, to preside in glory over a world redeemed. Tell this story to one of the world’s 2 billion Christians, and he’ll recognize it instantly. Tell it to a science-fiction and fantasy fan, and he’ll ask why you’re making minor alterations to the plot of &lt;i&gt;The Matrix&lt;/i&gt; or &lt;i&gt;Superman Returns&lt;/i&gt;.&amp;quot;

The evidence is pretty much right there on the surface, and not just in such moments as the one early in &lt;i&gt;The Matrix&lt;/i&gt; where someone tells a not-yet enlightened Keanu Reeves, “You’re my savior, man, my own personal Jesus Christ,” or the later one where Laurence Fishburne&amp;#39;s Morpheus tells Reeve&amp;#39;s Neo, “Like everyone else, you were born into bondage.” Morpheus also tells Neo, “When the Matrix was first built, there was a man born inside who had the ability to change whatever he wanted, to remake the Matrix as he saw fit. It was he who freed the first of us, taught us the truth. . . . After he died, the Oracle prophesied his return—that his coming would hail the destruction of the Matrix, end the war, bring freedom to our people.” As Plotinsky notes, &amp;quot;We don’t know [whether Neo is the One] until near the movie’s end, when a comrade-in-arms betrays Neo and Morpheus. Neo chooses to save Morpheus’s life by surrendering his own. The machines kill him—but then he mysteriously returns to life and obliterates his enemies, to the grand accompaniment of trumpets and a choir...It takes no great perception to recognize how closely this plot tracks the basic Christian narrative, though it conflates the Passion with the End Days, adding the betrayal of a Judas to a messianic Second Coming.&amp;quot; 
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
As for &amp;quot;Bryan Singer’s underrated &lt;i&gt;Superman Returns&lt;/i&gt; (2006) sought to answer an age-old question: Does humanity need gods? Lex Luthor, Superman’s eternal nemesis, answers early on. After Luthor compares himself to Prometheus, an accomplice retorts: &amp;#39;Sounds great, Lex, but you’re not a god.&amp;#39; &amp;#39;Gods are selfish beings who fly around in little red capes and don’t share their power with mankind,&amp;#39; Luthor snarls. He’s in agreement with Lois Lane, who has won a Pulitzer for an op-ed titled &amp;#39;Why the World Doesn’t Need Superman.&amp;#39;&amp;quot; When Superman returns, he proves both his archenemy and his old flame (and mother of his son) wrong: he selflessly saves the world, after which he &amp;quot;remains in a coma until his son...restores him to life. He leaves his hospital room empty until a nurse discovers it, just as Mary and Mary Magdalene find Jesus’s empty tomb.&amp;quot;
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
It may be possible to nod appreciatively at all this and still have doubts about whether sci-fi stories are automatically enriched if they mirror religious mythologies. The Christ story parallels underlying the &lt;i&gt;Matrix&lt;/i&gt; trilogy definitely got heavier and more explicit as the movies crashed into their second and third installments, and whether this is coincidental or not, there are plenty of people who think that the movies themselves also got progressively worse. There may be even more people who would argue that any position that depends on including the terms &amp;quot;underrated&amp;quot; and &amp;quot;&lt;i&gt;Superman Returns&lt;/i&gt;&amp;quot; in the same sentence has to be a non-starter. To his credit, Plotinsky readily acknowledges that when, &amp;quot;As the world knows to its sorrow, [George] Lucas revived the &lt;i&gt;Star Wars&lt;/i&gt; franchise in 1999 with &lt;i&gt;The Phantom Menace&lt;/i&gt;,&amp;quot; any inclination to downplay the religious-mystical aspects of the earlier films, or treat them playfully, were long gone, and the movies suffered because of it: &amp;quot;...where the original movie never deified Luke, &lt;i&gt;The Phantom Menace&lt;/i&gt; describes Anakin—the future Darth Vader, Luke’s father—in terms so messianic as to make Neo blush, repeatedly calling him &amp;#39;the Chosen One.&amp;#39; The source of the term is in Luke—the Evangelist, that is—where Jewish leaders say of the soon-to-be-crucified Jesus: &amp;#39;Let him save himself if he is the Messiah of God, his chosen one!&amp;#39; The movie is fuzzy about who exactly has done the choosing, however—a failure doubtless rooted in Lucas’s carelessness with plots.&amp;quot;
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Plotinsky makes a case that religious themes, which he also detects in &lt;i&gt;The Terminator, E.T.&lt;/i&gt;, and &lt;i&gt;I Am Legend&lt;/i&gt;, jumped to the front of sci-fi creators&amp;#39; minds as the Cold War receded and geopolitics, which had once fueled the &lt;i&gt;Star Trek&lt;/i&gt; series, became too confusing and gray for easy metaphorical consumption. Certainly it was a bleak day for the &lt;i&gt;Star Trek&lt;/i&gt; franchise when Earthlings and Klingons learned to just get along. Incidentally, if there&amp;#39;s anything to all this, might it not be true that &lt;i&gt;The Terminator&lt;/i&gt;, with its save-the-unborn-savior plot and its very-&amp;#39;80s nuclear-terror tremors, is a key transitional work, about a messiah coming to save us from the bomb? (I just thought I&amp;#39;d drop that in here; I&amp;#39;m sure not trying to suggest that Plotinsky&amp;#39;s article needed to be any longer.) In any case, we may have already seen things start to shift back: the recently completed &lt;i&gt;Battlestar Galactica&lt;/i&gt; series invoked God and gods and religious prophecy left and right, but in the context of an allegory about 9/11 and the development of post-9/11 morality. Will the new &lt;i&gt;Star Trek&lt;/i&gt; movie mark a full return to the thrilling days of intergalactic secular warfare involving aliens with growly accents and exotic facial hair? &lt;p&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;Alex Rivera’s &lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;Sleep Dealer&lt;/span&gt; both benefits from and is hindered by its ungainliness, which is most welcome in its synthesis of sci-fi elements into a recognizably down-and-dirty reality, and less appreciated in its rickety, exposition-heavy plotting. Set in the near future, Rivera’s saga concerns Memo (Luis Fernando Peña), whose Mexican farmhand father continues to pine for a life (of self-sustaining agricultural autonomy) that never materialized, stolen as it was by American conglomerates that – in response to a global water shortage – dammed up the local river in order to sell agua to the population at a high cost. Desperate to escape his circumstances, Memo retreats into eavesdropping on global telecommunications via a homemade radio and satellite dish, which gets him into trouble when he’s spotted spying on a corporation that, in response to this intrusion, has a military drone blow up his residence and, as bad luck would have it, his dad too. Grief-stricken, Memo flees to Tijuana, where beautiful stranger and aspiring writer Luz (Leonor Varela) helps him acquire “nodes” – computer sockets for one’s body – and, consequently, a job at a “sleep dealer,” a firm where Mexican workers plug into a mainframe in order to remotely operate manual labor machinery in the States.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Northern Mexican immigration is Rivera’s clear allegorical concern, one aided by a stark vision indebted to both &lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;The Matrix&lt;/span&gt; and – in a related thread about Luz’s online sale of her memories about Memo – &lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;Strange Days&lt;/span&gt;, and yet given unique enough context to stand on its own. In Memo’s attainment of nodes, and his career as a virtual laborer controlling robots on a San Diego skyscraper construction gig, Rivera’s story speaks plainly and eloquently to the dehumanization of economic exploitation. While it’s a subtext that barely qualifies as “sub,” Memo’s sleep dealer toil proves a potent snapshot of desperate people allowing themselves to be taken advantage of for a (relatively) reasonable price. It’s a situation given additional resonance by Rivera’s visually arresting conception of the sleep dealer, a giant cylindrical room where individuals are hooked up like marionettes to neon-blue cables, don milky white digital contact lenses, and drowsily mime movements in the air. The disconnect between body and mind, real and unreal, man and metal becomes manifest in these striking images, the flesh transformed into merely a cog in a distant machine – a portrait of the commodification of humanity that’s mirrored by Luz’s treatment of her day-to-day memories as merely retail goods to be manipulated for peak market value.&lt;br /&gt;

Rivera’s low-budget special effects aren’t seamlessly integrated into his authentic urban and rural landscapes, but that disconnect not only has a cheesy charm, but winds up softly augmenting his larger depiction of personal and societal detachment. Alas, whereas his aesthetic is a pleasingly clunky blend of old and new, his script falters in its address of its larger issues, as well as in devising a suitable conclusion. Characters’ fondness for talking about “crossing borders” and “seeing,” and saying things like “Anybody can connect,” make the director’s points explicit in a far less clever way than does mock TV show “Drone” (a &lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;Cops&lt;/span&gt;-style reality program that revels in clips of computer planes blowing “the hell out of the bad guys!”). Compounding this lack of subtlety are further storytelling missteps, highlighted by a strange refusal to parallel (and thus denounce) Luz’s exploitation of Memo’s odyssey with the global economy’s own mistreatment of him, an oversight that undercuts the film’s critique of modern First World-Third World economics. &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2009/04/faris_anna064.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2009/04/faris_anna064.jpg" align="right" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;While making a point of skipping the &lt;i&gt;Observe and Report&lt;/i&gt; screening at SXSW, I speculated whether Anna Faris might end up being the first person of talent to have a long and prosperous film career without ever making a good movie.  I’m already wrong about that, since it had slipped my mind that she was in &lt;i&gt;Lost in Translation&lt;/i&gt;.  Nonetheless, her IMDb page is highly toxic and should be read only with extreme caution: it includes four &lt;i&gt;Scary Movies, The Hot Chick, My Super Ex-Girlfriend&lt;/i&gt; and something called &lt;i&gt;Skanks&lt;/i&gt;, which I’m sure is wonderful.

If Faris has any regrets about her career so far, she isn’t letting on.  “I love unapologetic comedy,” Faris tells Logan Hill of &lt;a href="http://nymag.com/movies/profiles/55848/" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;i&gt;New York&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/a&gt;. “‘That kind of role comes around so rarely for women.’ And when it does, she is one of the few actresses fearless enough to play it, well, balls out. Consider the&lt;i&gt; Scary Movie&lt;/i&gt; franchise: ‘My character [Cindy Campbell] was so one-dimensional—a less-dimensional character could not be written,’ says Faris of her breakout role, in which she perfected a slack-jawed, uncomprehending blankness. ‘I had four looks. Four. Eventually, [director Keenen Ivory Wayans] would be like, ‘Okay, Look No. 2.’ That was a wince. There was also a look he called ‘Who farted?’ because, well …’ Faris laughs. ‘For an actor, it is humiliating when your expressions get reduced to a number—and you only have four.’”

Her latest role doesn’t exactly represent a sea change for the actress, who “has never played a more ditzy or idiotic twit than Brandi, the epically crass cosmetics-counter girl in the new dark and twisted comedy &lt;i&gt;Observe and Report&lt;/i&gt;.”  Nothing Hill writes about the movie makes me think I made a mistake by skipping it – he even gives away the hilarious punchline to the “borderline date rape” scene – but you’ve got to admit, Faris has spunk. Er, in more ways than one.  “I’ve done my share of studio stuff that’s wrong and never got into the movie—male nudity, semen, a few boobs. But there it is. My parents have something to look forward to… In &lt;i&gt;Scary Movie 3&lt;/i&gt;, I’m in one scene, spinning around on a pole like &lt;i&gt;The Matrix&lt;/i&gt;, strapped to this apparatus for six hours, spitting vomit all over me, and I’m like, ‘Yup, I’m willin’.”

And yet, when Keanu “Whoa!” Reeves’ messianic Neo finally&amp;nbsp;“wakes up” in his real world goo pod prison, the all-knowing cybernetic overlords just...uh...&lt;em&gt;flush him down a drain&lt;/em&gt; so he can be enlisted by Morpheus and his band of human rebels in their fight to overthrow the Matrix.&amp;nbsp; &lt;em&gt;Huh?&lt;/em&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;em&gt;Wha?&lt;/em&gt;&amp;nbsp; That logical inconsistency blew a gaping hole in my willing suspension of disbelief the first time I saw the Wachowski Brothers&amp;#39; cyberpunk classic,&amp;nbsp;yet later I realized I’d worried my pretty little head over nothing...NOT because the disappointing sequels kinda sorta explained away the seeming plot contrivance (since Neo was really the sixth integral anomaly and thus was supposed to find his way to the Architect and blah, blah, blah...), but rather&amp;nbsp;because the original &lt;em&gt;Matrix&lt;/em&gt; was so fresh and visually exciting, with&amp;nbsp;a paranoid, unified-field conspiracy theory of a plot that captured the unease (and exhilaration) of life in the digital age better than any movie since...well...&lt;em&gt;Tron&lt;/em&gt;. But James Cameron’s wildly popular sequel to &lt;em&gt;The Terminator&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;T2: Judgment Day&lt;/em&gt;, further upped the ante, introducing a shape-shifting liquid-metal version of the techno-phobic series’ cyborg destroyers, the T-1000 (Robert Patrick), that stands as one of action cinema’s most daunting evildoers. If both the original and T-1000 Terminators are preeminent examples of malevolent machinery, however, it’s Skynet – the government-sanctioned computer program that goes sentient, instigates a nuclear holocaust, and manufactures an army of robots – that proves the franchise’s true villain. Shrewdly foreshadowing our increasing global inter-connectivity, and postulating that condition as ripe for tragedy, Cameron’s series offers us an apocalypse created by the very devices we rely on for our protection, and then – as further evidenced by &lt;em&gt;T3&lt;/em&gt;, TV’s &lt;em&gt;Sarah Connor Chronicles&lt;/em&gt;, and presumably the forthcoming &lt;em&gt;Terminator: Salvation&lt;/em&gt; – also posits those machines as our sole means of achieving post-doomsday deliverance. From online computers to cell phones, technology is ubiquitous throughout Kurosawa’s film, and slowly reveals itself to be the cause of a strange, growing phenomenon whereby Tokyo’s citizens begin to mysteriously disappear, often leaving behind only a residual black stain on the wall (shades of the marks found throughout post-atom-bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki). It soon becomes clear that ghosts are attempting to enter the physical world through our gadgets, and Kurosawa’s portrait of a technology-fostered apocalypse is chilling not simply for its raft of indelibly unsettling imagery (a plane hurtling to the ground, shuffling specters spied on a computer monitor), but from its story’s underlying commentary about the alienation and loneliness fostered by our mounting reliance on machines. Modernity’s technological progress leads to communication breakdown, which in turn results in societal disintegration, a set of circumstances Kurosawa chillingly depicts as both unavoidable and irreversible. In this mind-bending story, the president of a low-rent television station, Max Renn (James Woods), stumbles upon transmissions of the titular S&amp;amp;M horror show – in which rape, torture and mutilation occur in a single orange room – and subsequently begins suffering from horrific hallucinations. From there, the line between real and unreal blurs, though regardless of whether or not the ensuing madness is all in Max’s head, the sight of him inserting organic videotapes into a stomach gash, which in turn produces a gun that melds with his hand, affords a twisted, terrifying view of man’s increasingly fundamental bond with his inanimate creations. “Long Live the New Flesh!” serves as both a rallying cry for the film’s “villains” and the mournful final words of Renn, with Cronenberg ambiguously treating our connection to television as something at once liberating and destructive. He is recruited as a client by a mysterious, secret organization that arranges for people to be given second chances at life: first their bodies are remade through plastic surgery and an exercise regimen, then they are dropped into a new routine that has been planned for them by a computer program. Of course, they&amp;#39;re still the same old dissatisfied dullards they were before they went under the knife, especially if, like Randolph, they&amp;#39;re being played by Rock Hudson after the bandages come off. Most techno-phobic sci-fi films are about the dangers of technology that we don&amp;#39;t yet have; this one is about what people could have been doing with technology that they already had when the movie came out, if only they were stupid and shameless enough. Which may be why it feels more accurately prophetic now than &lt;em&gt;2001&lt;/em&gt;. In this 1980 film, Truffaut for the first time addressed explicitly the subject of the French Occupation during World War II, seen here through the prism of a struggling theatre whose Jewish owner is hiding in the basement, leaving his leading-lady wife (played by Catherine Deneuve) to run the day-to-day business. There’s a great deal of intrigue in the film, not only involving a cocky young actor played by Gerard Depardieu, but with any number of Nazi sympathizers, informers, double-crossers, and sneaky Occupation types. But what comes through most clearly on this DVD release (and even more so on the Blu-Ray version) is how gorgeous the film is- how handsomely Truffaut re-created the period without letting the aesthetic concerns overwhelm the narrative ones. Likewise, this may be the most gorgeous Catherine Deneuve was on film- no mean feat, that.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The week’s other major classics release is the third volume of Warner’s &lt;i&gt;Forbidden Hollywood Collection&lt;/i&gt;, this one featuring six films from director William Wellman- &lt;i&gt;Other Men’s Women, The Purchase Price, Frisco Jenny, Midnight Mary, Heroes for Sale&lt;/i&gt;, and &lt;i&gt;Wild Boys of the Road&lt;/i&gt;. Other classics releases this week include: Lemmon and Matthau (but not Randall and Klugman) &lt;i&gt;The Odd Couple&lt;/i&gt; Centennial Edition (Paramount); Alfred Hitchcock’s &lt;i&gt;To Catch a Thief&lt;/i&gt; Centennial Edition (Paramount); &lt;i&gt;Lilo &amp;amp; Stitch&lt;/i&gt; 2-Disc Big Wave Edition (Disney); the unofficial 007 adventure &lt;i&gt;Never Say Never Again&lt;/i&gt; Collector’s Edition (Fox/MGM); and the &lt;i&gt;Fast and the Furious&lt;/i&gt; trilogy (Universal, also Blu-Ray), with standard DVDs of the films available separately.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The recent releases for this week are highlighted by: Daniel Craig’s second James Bond opus, &lt;i&gt;Quantum of Solace&lt;/i&gt; (Fox/MGM, also Blu-Ray); the animated adjunct to the &lt;i&gt;Watchmen&lt;/i&gt; universe, &lt;i&gt;Watchmen: Tales of the Black Freighter&lt;/i&gt; (Warner, also Blu-Ray); John Travolta as a talking dog in &lt;i&gt;Bolt&lt;/i&gt; (Disney); and Anne Hathaway in &lt;i&gt;Passengers&lt;/i&gt; (Sony, also Blu-Ray).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In TV on DVD news, this week brings: &lt;i&gt;The Venture Bros.&lt;/i&gt; Season 3 (Warner, also Blu-Ray); &lt;i&gt;Star Wars: The Clone Wars- A Galaxy Divided&lt;/i&gt; (Warner); &lt;i&gt;The Riches&lt;/i&gt; Season 2 (Fox); &lt;i&gt;The Life and Times of Tim&lt;/i&gt; (Warner); and &lt;i&gt;Big Stan&lt;/i&gt; (HBO, also Blu-Ray).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This week’s biggest Blu-Ray only release is &lt;i&gt;James Bond Blu-Ray&lt;/i&gt; vol. 3 (Fox/MGM), which includes &lt;i&gt;Goldfinger&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;Moonraker&lt;/i&gt;, and &lt;i&gt;The World Is Not Enough&lt;/i&gt;, also available separately. If you’re still looking for more action, you can always pick up &lt;i&gt;The Matrix&lt;/i&gt; (Warner). And on the more dramatic side of things, this week finds Paramount release three of its artier films of recent years, &lt;i&gt;A Mighty Heart&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;The Kite Runner&lt;/i&gt;, and &lt;i&gt;Things We Lost in the Fire&lt;/i&gt;. I admit I would be more enthusiastic about these releases if they were films I actually liked, but I do like the idea that studios are actually attempting to spotlight more than just loud action movies on Blu-Ray. Overbearing, in-your-face mixed media visuals? Check. Facile approach to &amp;quot;edgy&amp;quot; subject matter? Check. Record label-approved hipster band soundtrack slathered over every scene? Check. Photogenic young cast sure to meet the approval of &lt;em&gt;The Hills&lt;/em&gt; demographic? Check. Any sort of heart or insight or recognizable human behavior? Nowhere to be found. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Archie Williams (Gabriel Sunday) is a 17-year-old high school student living in a media-saturated world of his own making. A video camera seemingly permanently affixed to his hand, an array of movie references his most reliable form of communication, Archie is pretty much insufferable from the very beginning of &lt;em&gt;My Suicide&lt;/em&gt;. So when we learn he&amp;#39;s planning to kill himself on camera for a media class project, it&amp;#39;s not the most upsetting news. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Understandably, Archie&amp;#39;s teacher is not on board with his concept, although his classmates are intrigued, particularly beautiful Sierra (Brooke Nevin), the poor little rich girl Archie has always had a crush on. Sierra lost her brother in a car accident, and her parents are unfeeling, overmedicated plastic people who give her everything she wants. Naturally, she&amp;#39;s suicidal as well. Oh, the pain of the privileged! &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Archie and Sierra turn out to be kindred spirits, at least temporarily, and they set about checking items off their bucket list together, which works out great for Archie as Sierra takes his virginity. Just as we begin to suspect they&amp;#39;ll decide there might be something to this &amp;quot;life&amp;quot; thing after all, a tragedy hits that sets them both back into a tailspin. Only the gaseous wisdom of special guest star David Carradine can set Archie back on the path to righteousness. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Director Miller gives this Afterschool Special material the full &lt;em&gt;Requiem for a Dream&lt;/em&gt;/&lt;em&gt;Natural Born Killers&lt;/em&gt; migraine treatment, emptying his box of ProTools to engineer a rapid-fire mix of film, video, animation and computer graphics that some will undoubtedly call &amp;quot;dazzling.&amp;quot; All of this only serves to conceal how hollow the story is at the core and how little we care about the characters. Sunday is a skilled mimic, as we learn when Archie does trite re-enactments from &lt;em&gt;The Deer Hunter, The Matrix, Apocalypse Now&lt;/em&gt; and &lt;em&gt;Taxi Driver&lt;/em&gt; (yes, he actually does the &amp;quot;You talkin&amp;#39; to me&amp;quot; scene, which we all needed to see recreated for the twelve millionth time),but Archie&amp;#39;s big emotional moments never ring true. Nothing does in &lt;em&gt;My Suicide&lt;/em&gt;, including the tossed-off suggestion that helping others is the cure-all for depression. Welcome to the New World Order, where 9/11 was an inside job and secretive elitist organizations called the Bilderberg Group, the Trilateral Commission and/or the Council on Foreign Relations are plotting our enslavement.  Our only hope is a ragtag band of conspiracy theorists, anarchists and anti-globalists, led by the mad prophet of the Info Wars, Alex Jones.   
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; 
Jones launched his empire more than a dozen years ago on Austin&amp;#39;s public access television, a haven for kooks like the guy who calmly lectured about out-of-control feminism while wearing a toilet seat around his neck.  At first Jones seemed right at home, but it soon became clear that cable access couldn&amp;#39;t hold him; his charisma was too fierce, too weird, and worse yet, every once in a while he made sense.  But between brain and mouth there was no interlocutor, so although he was capable of the occasional trenchant observation about the trampling of Constitutional rights or the erosion of personal freedoms, it wasn&amp;#39;t worth trying to sift through his elaborate stream-of-consciousness black helicopter fantasias to find them.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
That is, unless you buy into the whole global conspiracy, like the subjects of this compelling new documentary from Luke Myer and Andrew Neel (&lt;i&gt;Darkon&lt;/i&gt;).  Although Jones is the central figure here, we also meet a number of his counterparts and protégés, including 9/11 &amp;quot;Truthers&amp;quot; Luke Rudowski and Seth Jackson, retired police officer and militia-based separatist Jack McLamb, and Turkish-Irish filmmaker Timucin Leflef.  They have little in common besides their fiercely held belief in the New World Order.  
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Myer and Neel aren&amp;#39;t concerned about the reality of these beliefs, and they don&amp;#39;t present any counter-arguments or talking head rebuttals.  They don&amp;#39;t have to.  In a way, &lt;i&gt;New World Order&lt;/i&gt; is an extension of their previous film &lt;i&gt;Darkon&lt;/i&gt;, which was about live-action role-playing gamers.  That movie&amp;#39;s tagline was &amp;quot;Everybody wants to be a hero,&amp;quot; which could just as easily apply to this one.  You don&amp;#39;t need a Ph.D. to figure out the psychology at work here; we&amp;#39;d all like to think our lives our important, and if you can convince yourself that you&amp;#39;re one of the few in the know about what&amp;#39;s really going on in the world, one of the few fighting the good fight against forces bent on destroying you...well, then you have a lot in common with Jones, Rudowski, Jackson and the rest.  
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Paranoid delusions are contagious in &lt;i&gt;New World Order&lt;/i&gt;, and Alex Jones is patient zero.  Bloated almost beyond recognition from his early cable access days, his face a puffy fright-mask of popeyed outrage, Jones leads his minions to the hotel where the annual Bilderberg Conference is taking place.  He sees his enemies behind every tree and around every corner - he&amp;#39;s continually evading cars he imagines are pursuing him and at one point announces that a nearby bare-shirted bicyclist is clearly Secret Service.  When a fire alarm goes off in the hotel just as he&amp;#39;s set to call into a talk radio show, it&amp;#39;s simply more confirmation that They&amp;#39;re Out to Get Him.  That he&amp;#39;s living the movie in his mind is evident from the references to &lt;i&gt;The Matrix, Star Wars&lt;/i&gt; and even &lt;i&gt;Ghostbusters&lt;/i&gt; that pepper his rants.  
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
It&amp;#39;s no wonder that youngsters like Rudowski and Jackson fall so easily under his spell; they admit that before 9/11, they gave little to no thought about the larger global picture, so why wouldn&amp;#39;t they be susceptible to a Hollywood-ready narrative that explains it all?  At least Leflef actually channels his paranoia into creative work by making his own dystopian sci-fi films.  The others are activists of the worst kind, the perfect storm of self-righteous certitude and blowhard ignorance.  A healthy skepticism of government, institutions and the wealthy elite is a good thing, but without ever overtly passing judgment, Myer and Neel show how easily it can curdle into narcissistic rage.

Oh, and some guy with a whip.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Conundrum of the Week:&lt;/b&gt; Terrence Malick’s &lt;i&gt;The New World&lt;/i&gt; is one of my favorite movies of all time. So why am I not more excited about this week’s release of the “Extended Cut” of the film? You’d think that I would welcome the opportunity to see even more of the film, to luxuriate in its irresistible Malick-ness. Yet I find myself torn. On the one hand, I’m encouraged by the fact that Malick re-cut the film himself, which leads me to believe that maybe he just needed more time to get his vision fine-tuned to his exact specifications (I still yearn, in vain I fear, for his 6-hour cut of &lt;i&gt;The Thin Red Line&lt;/i&gt;). But it was the theatrical cut that I fell in love with in the first place. So why can’t the boys at Warner just do what Universal did last week and release all three existing cuts of &lt;i&gt;The New World&lt;/i&gt; in one handy box set? Now, &lt;u&gt;there&lt;/u&gt; would be an occasion worth celebrating. I know, I know- I’m thinking about it too much. But that’s what they pay me for, after all…&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Also notable this week is MGM’s &lt;i&gt;Alfred Hitchcock Premiere Collection&lt;/i&gt;, which contains eight Hitchcock titles from their library and features many new commentary tracks and archival material including Hitchcock being interviewed by Peter Bogdanovich and Francois Truffaut. The big titles in the set are &lt;i&gt;Rebecca&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;Spellbound&lt;/i&gt;, and &lt;i&gt;Notorious&lt;/i&gt;, each of which went out of print on Criterion DVD a few years ago, and which are now available separately as well as in the set. Other titles in the set are &lt;i&gt;The Paradine Case&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;Sabotage&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;Young and Innocent&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;Lifeboat&lt;/i&gt;, and &lt;i&gt;The Lodger&lt;/i&gt;. Other classics coming to DVD include: a new release of Robert Altman’s &lt;i&gt;Short Cuts&lt;/i&gt; (Criterion), Kon Ichikawa’s &lt;i&gt;An Actor’s Revenge&lt;/i&gt; (Koch), &lt;i&gt;Capricorn One&lt;/i&gt; (Lionsgate), and the 15th Anniversary of &lt;i&gt;Chaplin&lt;/i&gt; (Lionsgate), which features what’s still Robert Downey Jr.’s sole Oscar nomination to date.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The week’s biggest recent release on DVD is, of course, &lt;i&gt;Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull&lt;/i&gt; (Paramount, also Blu-Ray), a movie which I enjoyed but which disappointed a number of fans including Trey Parker and Matt Stone. But if you’re one of the &lt;i&gt;Indy&lt;/i&gt; naysayers, check out one or more of this week’s crop of new indies: Errol Morris’ &lt;i&gt;Standard Operating Procedure&lt;/i&gt; (Sony, also Blu-Ray), the Genghis Kahn origin story &lt;i&gt;Mongol&lt;/i&gt; (Warner, also Blu-Ray), the Cannes-anointed &lt;i&gt;The Edge of Heaven&lt;/i&gt; (Strand Releasing), and this year’s Golden Bear-winner at Berlin, &lt;i&gt;Elite Squad&lt;/i&gt; (Genius Productions). Or if you’ve got a little too much cash jangling around in your pockets, you can always either buy &lt;i&gt;The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything: A VeggieTales Movie&lt;/i&gt; (Universal) or drive by your local Best Buy and throw $20 out of your car window, both of which produce about the same effect.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This week’s TV on DVD releases include: &lt;i&gt;CSI&lt;/i&gt; Season 8 (Paramount), &lt;i&gt;Back to You&lt;/i&gt; Season 1 (Universal), &lt;i&gt;Nash Bridges&lt;/i&gt; Season 1 (Paramount), and &lt;i&gt;The Unit Season 3&lt;/i&gt; (Fox).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Finally, this week’s releases are a fairly action-packed bunch, including thrills of all sorts. For true-crime thrills, try &lt;i&gt;Eastern Promises&lt;/i&gt; (Universal), &lt;i&gt;American Gangster&lt;/i&gt; (Universal), or &lt;i&gt;Casino&lt;/i&gt; (Universal). If you’ve got a taste for blood, give &lt;i&gt;Interview With the Vampire&lt;/i&gt; (Warner) a spin. For adventure and romance, there’s always the double feature of &lt;i&gt;Romancing the Stone&lt;/i&gt; (Fox) and &lt;i&gt;Jewel of the Nile&lt;/i&gt; (Fox). If you like your action spiced liberally with cyberpunk, you probably don’t need me to tell you about this week’s release of &lt;i&gt;The Ultimate Matrix Collection&lt;/i&gt; (Warner). For some Halloween chills, check out &lt;i&gt;Poltergeist&lt;/i&gt; (Warner). And if you don’t really care for good movies, &lt;i&gt;Constantine&lt;/i&gt; (Warner) should satisfy your movie-watching urges just fine.&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;img post&lt;/a&gt; containing the text of Roger Ebert’s kiss-off to longtime &lt;i&gt;Chicago Sun-Times&lt;/i&gt; sportswriter/annoying douchebag Jay Mariotti is too good to pass up.  “What an ugly way to leave the &lt;i&gt;Sun-Times&lt;/i&gt;. It does not speak well for you. Your timing was exquisite. You signed a new contract, waited until days after the newspaper had paid for your trip to Beijing at great cost, and then resigned with a two-word e-mail: ‘I quit.’ You saved your explanation for a local television station.  As someone who was working here for 24 years before you arrived, I think you owed us more than that. You owed us decency. The fact that you saved your attack for TV only completes our portrait of you as a rat…On your way out, don&amp;#39;t let the door bang you on the ass.”

Are you a cinephile or a cinemaniac?  Do you even know the difference?  &lt;a href="http://www.davidbordwell.net/blog/?p=2662" target="_blank"&gt;David Bordwell&lt;/a&gt; thinks he does.  “What is cinephilia? Literally, the love of film. But everybody likes, even loves film, no? The term &amp;#39;cinephilia&amp;#39; connotes an overwhelming passion for film, even an obsession about it. And not just particular films. I meet civilians all the time who are devoted to their favorites—&lt;i&gt;The Godfather, The Princess Bride, The Matrix&lt;/i&gt;. But they’re not cinephiles. So is it just a matter of quantity? Is it just that the cinephile enjoys a great many movies? Partly, but there’s still more to it.  The cinephile displays symptoms of cinemania, as chronicled in the film of the same name…But I do see differences. For one thing, most cinemaniacs like only certain sorts of movies—usually American, often silent, sometimes foreign, seldom documentaries. Do cinemaniacs line up for Brakhage or Frederick Wiseman? My sense is not.  Cinephiles by contrast tend to be ecumenical. Indeed, many take pride in the intergalactic breadth of their tastes. Look at any smart critic’s ten-best lists. You’ll usually see an eclectic mix of arthouse, pop, and experimental, including one or two titles you have never heard of. Obscurity is important; a cinephile is a connoisseur.”

Guest poster Aaron Aradillas looks back at the box office charts from 25 years ago at &lt;a href="http://somecamerunning.typepad.com/some_came_running/2008/08/25-year-agothis.html" target="_blank"&gt;Some Came Running&lt;/a&gt;.  Do you remember the number one movie from this week in 1983?  “&lt;i&gt;Easy Money&lt;/i&gt; was Rodney Dangerfield&amp;#39;s follow-up to &lt;i&gt;Caddyshack&lt;/i&gt;. It was pretty obvious that Rodney could carry a movie. The only problem was creating a vehicle where he could do his thing. &lt;i&gt;Easy Money&lt;/i&gt; wasn&amp;#39;t it…&lt;i&gt;Easy Money&lt;/i&gt; finds Rodney playing more or less himself in that seemingly reliabe story of a cheerful vulgarian being forced to change his ways in order to receive a big reward. In this case it is Rodney&amp;#39;s Monster-In-Law who is leaving him $10 million if he promises to stop drinking, smoking, gambling, and doing all the things we love Rodney for. For some reason filmmakers think this story is a perfect fit for high-wire comic actors. It isn&amp;#39;t. It neuters them from doing what we go to see them do.”

At &lt;a href="http://www.thehousenextdooronline.com/2008/08/day-of-wrath-church-of-cinema.html" target="_blank"&gt;The House Next Door&lt;/a&gt;, Steven Boone has another look at Carl Dreyer’s &lt;i&gt;Day of Wrath&lt;/i&gt; and makes a surprising connection.  “Watching Day of Wrath for the second time at age 35 (in a crisp new digitally restored print at IFC Center), I now see much more &lt;i&gt;E.T.&lt;/i&gt; than &lt;i&gt;Schindler&amp;#39;s List&lt;/i&gt;: There are no villains, no evil—just weak and fearful individuals either hiding from or within a system that provides the cruel certainty and definition of wrathful law pretending to justice. Everyone in &lt;i&gt;Day of Wrath&lt;/i&gt; is only trying to be as human and honorable as he/she can be within the limits of a paranoiac theocracy. What appeared to my 19-year-old eyes to be a dour, cold-eyed vision of corrupt power destroying innocents in the name of God now appears as delicate and wise about human drives as that scene in &lt;i&gt;E.T.&lt;/i&gt; where Elliot, so used to having no one to really talk to or play with, shows off his toys to the extra-terrestrial and prattles on like no tomorrow.”

In List-o-Mania, Topless Robot brings us the &lt;a href="http://www.toplessrobot.com/2008/08/the_10_worst_movie_tiein_comics.php" target="_blank"&gt;10 Most Unnecessary Movie Tie-In Comics&lt;/a&gt;.  How did I ever miss the &lt;i&gt;Freejack&lt;/i&gt; comic book?  “This sci-fi opus starring Emilio Estevez and Mick Jagger (when was the last time you heard those three words?) didn’t exactly wow moviegoers, possibly because ‘FreeJack’ sounds like a euphemism for public masturbation. Now Comics inexplicably put out an adaptation of the movie long after it had left theaters and was largely forgotten by the general populace. Strangely, Mick Jagger is a far better actor in the comic version.”

Set off in part by the arguments over &lt;i&gt;The Dark Knight&lt;/i&gt;&amp;#39;s action scenes--widely held to be &amp;quot;visually incoherent&amp;quot; even by many of the film&amp;#39;s admirers--Dennis Lim has assembled a  thoughtful and compelling &amp;quot;slide show&amp;quot; charting &lt;a href="http://www.slate.com/id/2196075/"&gt;the evolution of the movie fight scene.&lt;/a&gt; Classic action directors such as Don Siegel and Samuel Fuller used action and space to give their fights a kinetic punch that made audiences sit up and forget to blink, but in recent years directors have come to rely more and more on technological pizzazz to put the viewer in the position of someone right in the action (as in Scorsese&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;Raging Bull&lt;/i&gt;) or to violate the laws of gravity, more purposefully in &lt;i&gt;The Matrix.&lt;/i&gt; At their peak, the Wachowskis were able to use stage violent ballets and dissect them even as they unfolded, but more hackish and hollow-headed directors have helped rob movie action of its soul by making scenes that feel so unreal that there&amp;#39;s nothing at stake even when they&amp;#39;re readable. Still, you do occasionally see something like what Lim calls the &amp;quot;show-stopping corridor fight in Korean director Park Chanwook&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;Oldboy&lt;/i&gt;,&amp;quot; adding, &amp;quot;to watch this after trying to figure out what&amp;#39;s happening between Batman and the Joker is something like going back to Astaire and Rogers after watching Renee Zellwegger and Richard Gere in &lt;i&gt;Chicago.&lt;/i&gt; Fight scenes play on the spectator&amp;#39;s dual need for illusion and authenticity. And precisely for that reason, great fight scenes, like Park&amp;#39;s one-take wonder, tend to be at once believable and beyond belief. The choreography is intricate and meticulous enough to be convincing, but the scene also calls attention to its artificiality, with sly allusions to the side-scrolling vantage of beat-&amp;#39;em-up video games and the blatant proscenium framing. His memoir is probably the most eagerly anticipated actor&amp;#39;s autobiography since Marlon Brando&amp;#39;s 1995 &lt;i&gt;Songs My Mother Taught Me&lt;/i&gt;--and anyone who braved the gassy depths of the Brando book will recognize that as a shaky reference point at best. Since making good on his threat to stay retired from acting after the &lt;i&gt;Extraordinary Gentlemen&lt;/i&gt; debacle (a project that Connery reportedly took on after deciding that he didn&amp;#39;t understand it, and remembering that he&amp;#39;d turned down roles in &lt;i&gt;The Matrix&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;The Lord of the Rings&lt;/i&gt; because he hadn&amp;#39;t understood &lt;i&gt;them&lt;/i&gt;), Connery has had plenty of time to strip-mine his memories, but what no one knows yet is whether or not he&amp;#39;s had the inclination to do any serious digging. Langley notes that &amp;quot;In 2003 he pulled out of a project with author Meg Henderson, a personal friend, for a co-written book of memoirs. Two years later he withdrew from a seven-figure deal with the biographer Hunter Davies. A subsequent project with Canongate, a prominent Edinburgh publishing house, collapsed when the two parties &amp;#39;failed to see eye-to-eye&amp;#39; on the book&amp;#39;s content...The head of Canongate, Jamie Byng, said: &amp;#39;Sean has got a great storytelling instinct. There was some beautiful &lt;i&gt;Angela&amp;#39;s Ashes&lt;/i&gt;-type stuff about growing up in Edinburgh, but ultimately we couldn&amp;#39;t agree on what the book should be, and how we could move it on.&amp;#39;&amp;quot;

Connery&amp;#39;s publisher says that the forthcoming time, &lt;i&gt;Being a Scot&lt;/i&gt;, &amp;quot;fuses Connery&amp;#39;s own experiences, including his acting career, with his efforts to track down what Scots have given to the world in art, science, and sport.&amp;quot; This loose, baggy description really does make it sound like &lt;i&gt;Songs My Mother Taught Me&lt;/i&gt; with a burr. Connery once said that he wasn&amp;#39;t inclined to discuss his life &amp;quot;because I realized I was going to be spending the rest of my life trying to correct the inaccuracies, and I can&amp;#39;t be bothered.&amp;quot; With his book completed and ready for market, he may only now be realizing that the &amp;quot;inaccuracies&amp;quot;, or at least other people&amp;#39;s side of things, will be bobbing to the surface whether he declines comment or not. Just last week, he had to suffer the indignity of responding to claims by Diane Cilento--once a fine, fiery actress (&lt;i&gt;Hombre, The Wicker Man&lt;/i&gt;) before her own retirement in the 1980s, and Connery&amp;#39;s first wife, from 1962 to 1973--that he had verbally abused and financially deprived their son, Jason. &amp;quot;Sean has a problem about relationships,&amp;quot; said Cilento, &amp;quot;as everyone around him knows.&amp;quot; For his part, &lt;a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/mandrake/2440776/Connerys-fury-at-former-wifes-claim.html"&gt;Connery responded by calling his ex-wife &amp;quot;insane&amp;quot;&lt;/a&gt; and adding, &amp;quot;“I haven’t seen the woman in 37 years and she knows nothing about me or my life now. Diane can’t move on from the break up of our marriage and I have already had to contend with her accusations about me being violent towards her. Now the lies seem to be getting even more vicious, and, what is worse, she is dragging our son into it.&amp;quot; For more juicy stuff, you can wait another month and read the book. Maybe.

&lt;p&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;A few years ago, Roger Ebert set off an outcry in the gaming community when he questioned in print whether video games could, indeed, be art. While I’m a non-gamer myself, I remain optimistic of the artistic potential of the medium. However, whether Hollywood will manage to figure out how to make the proverbial good video game adaptation is somewhat more in doubt. I couldn’t say for sure, but I’m guessing that there are plenty of games out there that create interesting worlds and compelling narratives. So why does almost every big-screen video game adaptation look like a third-rate ripoff of &lt;i&gt;The Matrix&lt;/i&gt;? Perhaps all it’ll take is for a genuine gifted filmmaker to take on a video game. Then again, maybe what makes video games really interesting- the actual, you know, playing of them- will always make the big-screen adaptations of them feel a lot like watching your buddies play &lt;em&gt;Super Mario Bros.&lt;/em&gt; all afternoon without allowing you to take the controls for a while. A little and you’re marveling at the natural, age-appropriate sexiness of Susan Sarandon, Helen Mirren or Meryl Streep, wondering “did she or didn’t she?” with regard to nips, tucks and nose jobs.&amp;nbsp; Too much, and you’re recoiling in horror at that freakish &lt;a href="http://jezebel.com/gossip/clips/the-cat-lady-comments-on-britney-spears-new-lips-314482.php" class=""&gt;Cat Lady lady&lt;/a&gt;, gasping in shock&amp;nbsp;over missing noses and airbag lips, or wondering why Nicole Kidman keeps wearing that creepy Nicole Kidman mask. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Hollywood has developed an unhealthy addiction to&amp;nbsp;both plastic surgery &lt;i&gt;and&lt;/i&gt;&amp;nbsp;CGI, preferring the obviously fake to the convincingly real, whether in the form of grotesquely disproportionate rock-hard breasticles or pixilated atrocities like &lt;i&gt;Speed Racer&lt;/i&gt;, the cinematic equivalent of watching other people&amp;#39;s&amp;nbsp;birthday brats play video games at Chuck E. Cheese for an endless&amp;nbsp;135 minutes. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Did Jar-Jar Binks teach us nothing? Call me old-fashioned, but I still prefer a little &lt;i&gt;special&lt;/i&gt; in my special effects: cinematic images that make me go, “Oh my God, how’d they do that?” rather than, “Dude, that reminds me of this awesome &lt;i&gt;World of Warcraft&lt;/i&gt;&amp;nbsp;battle I just posted on YouTube!” &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you’re one of the CGI addicted who think all non-pixelated movie effects are inherently “cheesy,” consider the following clips an intervention as we here at the Screengrab present five examples of amazing movie moments that had (almost)&amp;nbsp;nothing to do with computer-generated imagery.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Just about any Buster Keaton movie&lt;/b&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/LTqFXfn3kdo&amp;amp;hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" height="355" width="425"&gt;&lt;/object&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;CGI scenes all tend to have a similar look, not unlike&amp;nbsp;the legions of aging&amp;nbsp;Hollywood starlets&amp;nbsp;sporting “trout pout” and Spitting Image puppet faces after one too many&amp;nbsp;visits to the neighborhood Botox dispensary.&amp;nbsp; Directors and special effects coordinators forced to get a little more creative, however, may come up with distinctive, fucked-up and memorable images like&amp;nbsp;those found in this&amp;nbsp;one-of-a-kind&amp;nbsp;Ken Russell phantasmagoria. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Star Wars&lt;/b&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

The star destroyer in the opening scene of &lt;i&gt;Star Wars&lt;/i&gt; (along with all the nooks and crannies of all the ships in &lt;i&gt;2001&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;Close Encounters of the Third Kind&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;Alien&lt;/i&gt;) were and remain more iconic and dramatic than all the CGI pod-racers, Naboo royal cruisers or Trade Federation frigates the computers at Skywalker Ranch have ever rendered. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Don’t get me wrong. CGI has achieved some amazing things: the bullet-time sequences in &lt;i&gt;The Matrix&lt;/i&gt;, Gollum and that buck naked Angelina Jolie in &lt;i&gt;Beowulf&lt;/i&gt;. But enough is enough, people. On the horizon: Hollywoodized versions of &lt;i&gt;Akira&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;Ghost in the Shell&lt;/i&gt; (that last one to be directed by Steven Spielberg) and M. Night Shyamalan&amp;#39;s movie adaptation of the anime-style Nickelodeon series &lt;i&gt;The Last Airbender&lt;/i&gt;. Anime itself has been a cult object in the U.S. going back some fifteen to twenty years (back when we used to call it &amp;quot;Japanimation&amp;quot; around the college dorm, on the occasions when we&amp;#39;d been away from out bongs long enough to approach words of more than three syllables), but unless you count the &lt;i&gt;Pokemon&lt;/i&gt; films, it&amp;#39;s never really crossed into the major markets. As Zac Bertschy of Anime News Network puts it, &amp;quot;Generation X is very familiar with anime. But if you&amp;#39;re not in that age group, there may be a learning curve.&amp;quot;

That which Hollywood cannot make a buck on in its pure form, it will attempt to absorb and recreate in its own image. The Wachowskis may well placed to wield the hammer in forging a live-action/CGI anime hybrid because they&amp;#39;re already understood to speak the fans&amp;#39; language. Based on the influences shown in &lt;i&gt;The Matrix&lt;/i&gt;, they&amp;#39;re recognized as fellow &amp;quot;fanboys&amp;quot; who have an investment in the genres they play around with rather than vultures trying to cash in. (&amp;quot;You know they still play Dungeons and Dragons?&amp;quot; says &lt;i&gt;Speed Racer&lt;/i&gt; star Cristina Ricci, with what I &lt;i&gt;hope&lt;/i&gt; is a touch of awe in her voice. &amp;quot;You&amp;#39;ll be sitting around on set, listening to them go on and on about why they hate the concept of time travel.&amp;quot;) In the words of their erstwhile producer Joel Silver, &amp;quot;They aren&amp;#39;t smirking when they made this.&amp;quot; That might not be the best news in the world; it wasn&amp;#39;t exactly a lack of self-seriousness that brought the &lt;i&gt;Matrix&lt;/i&gt; sequels crashing down to Earth. One hopes that the brothers have regained a sense of playfulness along with their way-cool &amp;quot;computer world&amp;quot; of this film. (&amp;quot;It was a little like living in the &lt;i&gt;Matrix.&lt;/i&gt;&amp;quot; says star Emile Hirsch. For some of us old farts, reading lines like these is a little like re-living the publicity campaign for &lt;i&gt;TRON.&lt;/i&gt;) If &lt;i&gt;Speed Racer&lt;/i&gt; crashes badly enough to chill Hollywood&amp;#39;s interest in anime, where will the suits turn instead? Movies based on breakfast cereal box tops? Mentos commercials? Maybe I shouldn&amp;#39;t have taken the blue pill...

(The &lt;em&gt;Guardian&lt;/em&gt; once called him &amp;quot;the Elvis of philosophy&amp;quot;, ignoring Elvis&amp;#39;s famous statement that he thought that Lacan was &amp;quot;about as funny as a turd in a punchbowl.&amp;quot;)&amp;nbsp; A couple of fall festival seasons back, the bearded, bearish Zizek could be seen pontificating about such subjects as Hitchcock and David Lynch, &lt;i&gt;The Exorcist&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;The Matrix&lt;/i&gt;, in Sophie Fiennes&amp;#39;s two-and-a-half-hour &lt;i&gt;The Pervert&amp;#39;s Guide to the Cinema&lt;/i&gt;, which was at least the third film documentary built around his gruff-accented rumblings, and which was widely acclaimed as his definitive star turn. The movie has yet to be distributed here in theaters or on DVD, but you can watch a fifty-minute chunk of it on a DVD that comes with &lt;a href="http://www.believermag.com/"&gt;&amp;quot;The 2008 Film Issue&amp;quot; of &lt;i&gt;The Believer&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/a&gt;. In a brief accompanying tribute, Jason McBride describes Zizek&amp;#39;s approach in this film essay as &amp;quot;dialectical materialism for the multiplex.&amp;quot; I don&amp;#39;t know what that means, but it sure is catchy. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Earlier film directors (including Alfonso Cuaron, who included Zizek among the list of all-star bigbrains who appeared in &lt;i&gt;The Possibility of Hope&lt;/i&gt;, the documentary short that was included as a bonus on the &lt;i&gt;Children of Men&lt;/i&gt; DVD, which also included a Zizek commentary track) have been content to stick a camera in front of Zizek and watch him spout. Finnes, trying to supply some cinematic fireworks to match the stream of words pouring out of her star, provides him with settings drawn from the film clips that are intercut with his monologue; we see him sitting in a chair in Norman Bates&amp;#39;s basement, sitting across from Laurence Fishburne&amp;#39;s Morpheus and demanding, &amp;quot;I vant a third pill!&amp;quot;, steering the boat taking Tippi Hedren to Rod Taylor&amp;#39;s island home in &lt;i&gt;The Birds&lt;/i&gt; (the title of which Zizek pronounces as &amp;quot;The Burks&amp;quot;), and in Dorothy Vallens&amp;#39;s apartment in &lt;i&gt;Blue Velvet&lt;/i&gt;, passively observing her mating ritual with Frank Booth. (Disappointingly, he and Frank don&amp;#39;t pass the inhaler back and forth.) At first it seems like a cute gimmick, but it begins to feel like the logical next step in Zizek&amp;#39;s approach. He loves movies, but he also has mixed feelings about their hold on them, the way they invade and impose themselves on his dream life. Spinning theories about where these images come from and how they work is his way of fighting back and reclaiming some territory within his own inner space; Fiennes makes it possible for him to escape the lecture room and take the fight to his subject&amp;#39;s home turf. In addition to the DVD (and the already-notorious &lt;a href="http://nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/tags/werner+herzog/default.aspx"&gt;Werner Herzog-Errol Morris conversation&lt;/a&gt;), there are a few other things in the magazine that aim to get at the movies&amp;#39; assaults on our dreams, and our conscious minds&amp;#39; efforts to stand their ground, that might do Zizek proud. HAL 9000 tried to hog the spacecraft for himself in &lt;i&gt;2001: Space Odyssey&lt;/i&gt;; in &lt;i&gt;Colossus: The Forbin Project&lt;/i&gt;, an electronic super-brain invented by the guy who plays Victor on my grandmother&amp;#39;s beloved &lt;i&gt;The Young and the Restless&lt;/i&gt;, was designed to serve as a perfect missile defense system but immediately started acting too big for its business; its descendant, the computer in &lt;i&gt;WarGames&lt;/i&gt; almost started World War III in an excess of playfulness; and don&amp;#39;t get me started on that weekend at Westworld. (Hell, I had more fun at Euro Disney.) But for the better part of a decade now, Hollywood has been specifically trying to tap into the supposedly vast, ominous potential of the Internet and hook into some of those cool cyberpunk dollars, with decidedly mixed results. &amp;quot;Like a virus shrugging off an outdated antibiotic,&amp;quot; Johnson writes, &amp;quot;the Net has proved resistant to such attempts. You&amp;#39;ve seen evidence of the struggle. Over and over, Hollywood has shown us things happening on computer monitors in improbably large and cartoonish letters, as if all Web sites dealing with national security are designed by the folks at Webkinz. &amp;#39;To eliminate Baltimore, click here,&amp;#39; that kind of thing.&amp;quot; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You can see the thinking. Someone with mad hacking skills could spy on you, erase your identity, fill your Netflix queue with Ed Burns movies, make your life &lt;i&gt;hell itself.&lt;/i&gt; That line of thinking helped produce such early cyberduds as &lt;i&gt;The Net&lt;/i&gt;, in which hackers laid siege to Sandra Bullock while the audience just sat there wondering why she was so hard up for company that she was hanging out with Dennis Miller. Then there was &lt;i&gt;Hackers&lt;/i&gt; starring Jonny Lee Miller and an alarmingly hot young Angelina Jolie (sporting an English accent and cobalt-blue nail polish) as the leaders of a team of master web surfers who run afoul of an evil computer genius called The Plague (Fisher Stevens), who single-handedly caused the cancellation of our plans to compose a list of the Ten Lamest Movie Super-Villains because the computer that writes our Top Ten lists kept insisting on assigning his name to all ten slots. (The most convincing hackers in movies are the team of government-run nerds in &lt;i&gt;Enemy of the State&lt;/i&gt;--Jack Black is among them--who act like big swinging dicks when they&amp;#39;re alone in a dark room with their computer screens in front of them and who fold faster than Superman on laundry day when pulled into the light and asked to account for what they&amp;#39;ve been doing--just following orders, natch.) More recently, as in &lt;i&gt;Untraceable&lt;/i&gt;, movies have tried to go the Lee Siegel route of suggesting that there&amp;#39;s just something about the &amp;#39;Net that short circuits the frontal lobes and renders people incapable of fighting off their baser instincts. Here, the villain is a serial killer who yokes his victims to a webcam and urges people to check in at his site, &amp;quot;killwithme,&amp;quot; having made it clear that &amp;quot;the more that watch, the faster he dies.&amp;quot; Naturally, people watch in droves. (The set-up faintly recalls &lt;i&gt;The Card Player&lt;/i&gt;, a 2002 Dario Argento horror in which the serial killer bets the victim&amp;#39;s life on a video card game with the cops; if the killer wins, he executes his latest captive in front of a webcam while the police watch on helplessly.) &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There are real anxieties and fears involving the Internet just waiting to be tapped for the movies, but there&amp;#39;s a built-in problem identified by the writer Scott Rosenberg: &amp;quot;Movies are overwhelmingly a visual medium, and dealing with the Internet is the parallel problem to dealing with writing. In the old days it was a typewriter. There aren&amp;#39;t a lot of great movies about someone sitting at a typewriter.&amp;quot; The great Internet paranoia fantasy of the movies may still be the original &lt;i&gt;The Matrix&lt;/i&gt;, which shot right past the realistic image of someone tapping away at a keyboard and conjured up an impressively imagined world of thrilling liberation and terrifying imprisonment. It understood that what&amp;#39;s exciting, and scary, about the Internet is the sense it can give you that you&amp;#39;re exploring strange new worlds at the same time that you are, in actual fact, sitting on your ass typing. &lt;i&gt;The Matrix&lt;/i&gt; somehow found a way to show what that fantasy neverland located somewhere between the keyboard and the brain might look like, while other attempts to visualize the experience, such as &lt;i&gt;Johnny Mnemonic&lt;/i&gt;, became too literal-minded and hit the earth with a splat. And having gotten it right that first time, the Wachowskis then spent a lot of time and money proving just how hard it is to do. &lt;p&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/02/01-07/fisburne1.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/02/01-07/fisburne1.jpg" align="right" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;February is Black History Month, and since we enjoyed combing through the stacks in preparation for &lt;a class="" href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2008/01/30/that-guy-yaphet-kotto.aspx"&gt;last week&amp;#39;s featured That Guy!, Yaphet Kotto&lt;/a&gt;, we figured we&amp;#39;d continue on in that vein and take a look at some of Hollywood&amp;#39;s finest African-American character actors. We&amp;#39;ve discussed before how it&amp;#39;s much harder for a woman to make a reputation playing character roles; actresses tend to be valued more for their looks than their acting skills, and women who aren&amp;#39;t traditionally beautiful have far fewer opportunities to build a career based on their chops and personalities than do men who aren&amp;#39;t conventionally handsome. Similarly, it may actually be easier for African-Americans to become character actors, for no other reason than for a very long time, leading man roles were generally denied to them. With his commanding demeanor, strong and handsome face and forceful personality, there&amp;#39;s no reason that Larry Fishburne shouldn&amp;#39;t have become one of Hollywood&amp;#39;s biggest stars, and for a brief period in the early 1990s, it seemed like he would be — but for various reasons, it became clear that even at that late date, the movie business had only one opening for Serious Black Superstar, and it was already being filled by Denzel Washington. (It still is, for that matter.) So Fishburne — a rare black child star who became an even rarer black actor who never fell into stereotypical action or comedy roles — had to settle for nabbing some of the highest-profile second-banana roles available. Fishburne has always been a remarkably gifted actor, even as a child, and despite often being cast as a militant, a prophet, or some other variety of visionary, he&amp;#39;s willing to take the piss on occasion (witness his almost satirically self-important voicing of the Silver Surfer in the recent &lt;i&gt;Fantastic Four&lt;/i&gt; sequel), and is actually a lot more fun in light comic roles than anyone gives him credit for, as he showed when he played Cowboy Curtis on &lt;i&gt;Pee Wee&amp;#39;s Playhouse&lt;/i&gt;. Still not yet fifty years old, Fishburne has a lot of good roles ahead of him, if he doesn&amp;#39;t give up acting altogether and move into writing, directing or producing — all areas at which he&amp;#39;s shown talent. And if he never became America&amp;#39;s next black superstar, he did get to marry the luscious Gina Torres, and that ain&amp;#39;t bad as a second prize.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Where to see Laurence Fishburne at his best:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt;APOCALYPSE NOW &lt;/i&gt;(1979)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;It wasn&amp;#39;t his first movie — the former child star had already impressed audiences with his teenage turn in &lt;i&gt;Cornbread, Earl and Me&lt;/i&gt; — but Francis Ford Coppola&amp;#39;s Vietnam nightmare was certainly the film that put young Laurence Fishburne on the map. As Mr. Clean, he gives the purest and most human performance in the movie, and his death is the most touching and tragic. It&amp;#39;s all the more astonishing that Larry (as he called himself at the time) was only fourteen years old when filming began, having fudged his age to get the part. Of course, the filming of &lt;i&gt;Apocalypse Now&lt;/i&gt; took so long, he was approximately thirty-eight years old when it wrapped. &lt;/font&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;BOYZ N THE HOOD&lt;/i&gt; (1991)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This was the movie that seemed to predict superstardom for Fishburne; so successful and influential was it at the time of its release that it&amp;#39;s also the film that inspired him to start going by Laurence instead of Larry. John Singleton&amp;#39;s directorial debut, &lt;i&gt;Boyz N the Hood&lt;/i&gt; is one of the first, and undoubtedly the best, of a mini-wave of ghetto-realist gangsta films, and despite heavy competition from pre-living-joke-status Cuba Gooding and Ice Cube (and Angela Bassett, with whom he would later shine as Ike Turner in &lt;i&gt;What&amp;#39;s Love Got to Do With It?&lt;/i&gt;), Fishburne anchors the cast as the morally complex, conflicted Furious Styles. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/02/01-07/fishburne2.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/02/01-07/fishburne2.jpg" align="left" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/font&gt; &lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;THE MATRIX&lt;/i&gt; (1999) &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/p&gt;The Wachowski Brothers&amp;#39; high-toned blend of wire-fu, gunplay and slapdash philosophy holds up less well with each year that passes by. But at the time of its release, it perfectly synthesized a number of elements of the &lt;i&gt;zeitgeist&lt;/i&gt; into an action movie that, if it wasn&amp;#39;t as smart as it thought it was, at least wasn&amp;#39;t dumb. Fishburne landed the role of a lifetime as the mystical hacker Morpheus, and it&amp;#39;s a testament to his acting skills and more or less permanent sense of gravitas that he managed to avoid magical Negritude in a role that pretty much defines the magical Negro.
