This is the last time I’ll write one of these columns (unless, of course, someone wants to hire me to do so), but I just wanted to mention how much fun it has been. I know that I haven’t been doing these as frequently as I should. My real job has been taking precedence, and now that I actually will have some time, there ain’t gonna be no Screengrab no more. So, since we are near the end, I wanted to write a super-deluxe column. Luckily, cable tv has made that easy by scheduling a ridiculous number of great movies in the near future!

Wednesday, May 27
On Wednesday, the best bet is Errol Morris's documentary Fast, Cheap and Out of Control, which is playing on IFC at 12:15 pm central/1:15 pm eastern (and sorry for the late notice!). Fast, Cheap and Out of Control is an impressive attempt to impose order into the chaos of the interviews, which is reflected in the subjects' chosen careers. Overnight, TCM is showing It Happened One Night at 1:30 am central/2:30 am eastern.

Thursday, May 28
Thursday has John Sayles's Lone Star on TCM at 9 pm central/10 pm eastern. That's one of the best Sayles movie, but I don't really need to tell you this, do I, dear Screengrab reader?

Friday, May 29
Starting at 5:30 am central/6:30 am eastern, Friday has six, count 'em, six, flicks worth a watch. First up is Amarcord, Fellini's last great movie, on IFC at the aforementioned time and again at 11:35 am central/12:35 pm eastern. Then TCM has The Blue Dahlia, the only movie based on a screenplay by Raymond Chandler, at 7:45 am central/8:45 am eastern. It's not the best film noir, but The Blue Dahlia has quite a lot going for it. In the afternoon, TCM is running Orson Welles's The Lady From Shanghai at 1 pm central/2 pm eastern. That's a great movie despite the ludicrous accent Welles sports throughout. In the evening, Ovation is running The Triplets of Belleville at 7 pm central/8 pm eastern and again at 10 pm central/11 pm eastern. Ovation keeps the aspect ratio of the films it runs, but it does cut for commercials frequently and sometimes bleeps adult language in racier movies. There's no adult language in The Triplets of Belleville, though. If something darker is more your style, IFC is showing Roman Polanski's Death and the Maiden at 7:15 pm central/8:15 pm eastern and again overnight at 12:30 am central/1:30 am eastern. Also overnight is the Jamaican crime flick that made Jimmy Cliff an international star, The Harder They Come, on TCM at 1:15 am central/2:15 am eastern.

Saturday, May 30
Saturday is always a good day for cable movies. The first one I want to mention is New World Order, as discussed by my esteemed colleague Mr. Scott Von Doviak, which is playing on IFC at 9 am central/10 am eastern. That's awfully early for conspiracy theories! I guess they have to get moving early on Saturday before the Military-Industrial-Fast Food-Big Oil-Computertronic-Cell Phone-Google-Movie Critic Complex gets its coffee. Unfortunately, IFC is also showing it at 3 pm central/4 pm eastern, which is all part of their plan, man! I also want to mention The Searchers on AMC at 11:30 am central/12:30 pm eastern. Don't watch good movies on AMC. They cut 'em down to 4:3 aspect, and then pan-&-scan them. It should be a crime to show The Searchers in anything other than widescreen. So skip it on AMC and get the DVD instead. Saturday afternoon is more promising. Ovation is showing Waking Life at 1 pm central/2 pm eastern. Not everyone loves or likes that movie, but I thought it was striving mightily towards something, and it deserves points for that. TCM is showing (in the correct widescreen aspect and uncut) The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly at 4 pm central/5 pm eastern. If you missed The Triplets of Belleville on Friday, Ovation is showing it again at 5 pm central/6 pm eastern and Waking Life again at 11 pm central/midnight eastern.

Sunday, May 31
Peter Weir's The Last Wave is one of those movies that I have a hard time rating. On one hand, it has a spooky ambience and haunting conceit that it doggedly maintains throughout. It features the only performance by Richard Chamberlain that could conceivably be called "acting" that anyone ever caught on film. On the other hand, the ending is profoundly silly, especially after all the dread leading up to it. With that caveat, I recommend that you take in a viewing if you haven't seen it. It's on IFC at 7 am central/8 am eastern and again at 1 pm central/2 pm eastern. Ovation is running The Triplets of Belleville again at 1 pm central/2 pm eastern and Waking Life again at 7 pm central/8 pm eastern. Ovation is also running Crumb at 9 pm central/10 pm eastern. Also recommended: since Sunday, May 31 is the ostensible last day of the Screengrab, spend your day perusing our archives!

Monday, June 1
There's funny and there's John Ford. The funny is Duck Soup on TCM at 1:30 pm central/2:30 pm eastern, then The Awful Truth on TCM at 5:15 pm central/6:15 pm eastern, and finally Young Frankenstein on Fox Movie Channel at 8:30 pm central/9:30 pm eastern. But TCM is running a John Ford film festival overnight starting at 7 pm central/8 pm eastern with Directed By John Ford, a documentary about the man as narrated by Orson Welles. Then there's Stagecoach (9 pm central/10 pm eastern), which is the movie Orson Welles watched to learn how to make movies, then The Horse Soldiers (10:45 pm central/11:45 pm eastern), The Quiet Man (1 am central/2 am eastern), and She Wore A Yellow Ribbon (3:15 am central/4:15 am eastern). That's a lot of horse opera (with an Irish interlude), but it's well worth it. Be sure to keep an eye on TCM this month, because they're running blocks of movies by great directors through all of June, sometimes two a day.

Tuesday, June 2
Ovation has the neorealist classic The Bicycle Thief (aka Bicycle Thieves) at 2 pm central/3 pm eastern and again at 5 pm central/6 pm eastern and overnight at 1 am central/2 am eastern. Thrill to the despair of a family man clinging to existence in post-war Rome! At 7 pm central/8 pm eastern, TCM is showing It Happened One Night, the first in a Frank Capra film festival running overnight. At the same time, Fox Movie Channel has Vanishing Point. But I recommend that you catch Theremin: An Electronic Odyssey on Ovation at that time (although it's playing again at 10 pm central/11 pm eastern). It's a fairly obscure documentary about the electronic musical instrument and its inventor that packs a surprising story and an emotional punch.

Wednesday, June 3
Nothing today, sorry (if he's your thing, TCM has a King Vidor film festival this evening, so check it out). Perhaps you could spend your day weeping for the lost Screengrab and cursing the cruel economy?

Thursday, June 4
TCM is running an Ingmar Bergman film fest starting at 7 pm central/8 pm eastern with an appearance by the director on the Dick Cavett Show from 1971. Then there's The Seventh Seal (8 pm central/9 pm eastern), Wild Strawberries (9:45 pm central/10:45 pm eastern), Persona (11:30 pm central/12:30 am eastern), Hour Of The Wolf (1 am central/2 am eastern), and The Passion of Anna (2:45 am central/3:45 am eastern). The first three in particular are necessary viewing for film geeks.

Friday, June 5
IFC has Before Sunrise at 4:15 pm central/5:15 pm eastern, but TCM is running Carol Reed movies all day and Steven Spielberg movies all night. Check out the schedule. Of course, I especially recommend The Third Man at 5 pm central/6 pm eastern.

And this is as far out as I'm going with specific recommendations. But watch TCM for Fritz Lang Day on June 8, Preston Sturges Night on June 10, John Huston and Akira Kurosawa on June 11, Jacques Tourneur on June 12, and... I should really cut this off here. It's been fun! Thanks for reading!

Set Your DVR! New World Order

Looking back on my all-too-short tenure with the Screengrab, there is absolutely no question which of my posts caused the biggest uproar. It was during this year's SXSW film festival, when I reviewed New World Order, the documentary on conspiracy theorists, 9/11 "truthers" and their fearless leader, Alex Jones. It's not that I was down on the movie so much as I was critical of the red-faced fear-monger Jones and his clueless minions. That really pisses them off. They can't be criticized, you see, because they're in touch with the real truth. To point out any flaws in their reasoning is to admit you are complicit with the ruling elite. These are some of the kinder comments that post received:

"I don't think this guy actually saw the film, because in it Jones talks about how idiots like this guy say it makes the world so fun for them to beleive in the nwo but in all honesty what they say the nwo is trying to do is worse then hitler and the nazis."

"This is the most Bias hit piece review I've ever seen. New World Order was not a hit piece. Unlike your pathetic attempt to review such a film. Your Bias and lack an actual critique simply implies you do not know what your talking about. Nice try but you fail."

"This looks like a hit piece. I guess we know who signs Mr. Scott Von Doviak cheques,the federal reserve,military industrial complex...."

I only wish that last comment were true, especially now that the Screengrab is folding. But anyway...was I wrong? Did I step over the line in describing Jones' face as "a puffy fright-mask of popeyed outrage"? (I don't think so, because his whole snorting, animalistic delivery is part of his presentation, and his squinty-piggy look either makes it more compelling or disturbing, depending on your point-of-view.) Now you can judge for yourself. Tonight, IFC airs New World Order at 6:45 pm EDT (5:45 pm CDT). So set your DVR, give it a look-see, and report back here with your thoughts. Unless you’re a night owl, you’ll want to do just that, because this bad boy doesn’t start until 2:15 in the blessed a.m. (1:15 Central) on Turner Classic Movies. But it’s a real rarity: the one and only motion picture directed by one of the great madmen of cinema, Timothy Carey. You’ve seen him in movies by Stanley Kubrick (The Killing, Paths of Glory) and John Cassavettes (Minnie and Moskowitz,, The Killing of a Chinese Bookie)…and if you still can’t picture him, I direct your attention to his frenzied shirtless hillbilly boogie from Poor White Trash:

So…that guy. Of The World’s Greatest Sinner, Jerry Renshaw of the Austin Chronicle writes: “Words like ‘offbeat’ are far too mild for this disconcertingly sleazy and base idiot-savant oddity that I cannot recommend highly enough for fans of the bizarre.” Personally, I’ve been waiting years to see this one and my DVR is already set. Again, it’s early tomorrow morning, Saturday, April 18th at 2:15 a.m. (1:15 a.m. Central) on TCM.

Yes, it's been a while since I've done one of these. Life is busy and these take a lot of research, y'know? But this week is full of great movies on cable, so I couldn't resist making a few recommendations. After all, if I can't share this stuff with Screengrab readers, who can I share it with?

Let's start with tonight! On Monday, April 13 at 10 pm eastern/9 pm central, TCM has The Grand Illusion, Jean Renoir's great movie about war and class and prejudice and sorrow and about a million other things. This is one of my all-time favorite movies, and I suspect it's the same for many of you.

I have nothing else this week until Friday, April 17. At 3 pm eastern/2 pm central and again at 6 pm eastern/5 pm central, Ovation is showing Living In Oblivion, a fun movie about the frustrations involved in making a bad movie. It stars Steve Buscemi and Catherine Keener, and features a showstopping tirade by Peter Dinklage. Ovation has a few problems when it shows movies - bleeped words and lots of commercials are the worst - but it also keeps the original screen aspect and goes out of its way to find quality programming, so there's that. Later, at 8 pm eastern/7 pm central, TCM is showing The Maltese Falcon, and there's rarely a good reason not to watch that. If, however, you'd rather take your murder with teenage ennui instead of hardboiled cynicism, IFC is showing Gus Van Sant's Paranoid Park at 8:15 eastern/7:15 central. If you can't stand to miss either, IFC is showing it again at 1:30 am eastern/12:30 am central.

The next morning on Saturday, April 18 at 8 am eastern/7 am central, IFC has The Hidden Fortress, Akira Kurosawa's strangely familiar movie about a couple of bumbling peasants who get involved with a movement to shepherd a princess across enemy territory before the Evil Empire can discover the location of the hidden rebel base on the fourth moon of Yavin and... Wait, I got off track there somewhere. Anyway, it all takes place a long time ago in a country far, far away. See you next week!

Set Your DVR!: February 23 - 27, 2009

I'm having to break my pledge to stick to a handful of movies per week. Because this week is just so freakin' chock-full of goodness! It's so movie-riffic that it would be absurd for me to try to cut it down to three or four. I don't remember being made the Mayor Of Television, but since there's no other reasonable explanation, I expect to be cutting a bunch of ribbons until my corrupt administration is thrown in jail. Enjoy it while it lasts!

Only two movies to mention on Monday, February 23. At 7 pm central/8 pm eastern and again at 10 pm central/11 pm eastern, OVATION is showing Spalding Gray's Swimming To Cambodia, a monologue that highlights what a fun and nimble mind Gray had. It's directed by Jonathan Demme and scored by Laurie Anderson, both of which add extra layers of cool. Then overnight, TCM is showing Jean Renoir's The Southerner at 1:15 am central/2:15 am eastern (2/24). I'll be honest: The Southerner can be a tough movie. Renoir at his best was perhaps the most sympathetic and humanist director of the 20th century. But he was quite out of his depth with this movie. It's not terrible, but it's not his first tier. Still quite worthwhile for fans of Renoir or star Zachary Scott.

On Tuesday, February 24, TCM is out of control with awesomeness. First, at 11:15 am central/12:15 pm eastern, TCM is showing Jacques Tati's Mr. Hulot's Holiday, which is a funny and charming, if not uproarious, movie about the habits of the French middle-class during the 50s. Afterwards, TCM is showing François Truffaut's The 400 Blows at 12:45 pm central/1:45 pm eastern. It's not just one of the earliest classics of the French New Wave, but also a powerful semi-autobiographical story about institutional mistreatment of juvenile delinquents. The misbegotten memories of mistreatment of French youth continues at 2:45 pm central/3:45 pm eastern with Louis Malle's Au Revoir, Les Enfants, which is a semi-autobiographical work about a boarding school that hides a few young Jews during the Second World War. Afterwards is René Clément's Gervaise at 4:45 pm central/5:45 pm eastern. I have not seen this movie, but I don't believe that it has been released on DVD.

TCM leaves France for Japan in the evening with four stone classics of Japanese cinema: The Burmese Harp at 7 pm central/8 pm eastern, then Rashomon at 9 pm central/10 pm eastern, followed by The Seven Samurai at 10:30 pm central/11:30 pm eastern, and finally Kwaidan at 2 am central/3 am eastern (2/25). The Burmese Harp is an anti-war story, Rashomon is (of course) about the shifting nature of narrative and observations (or so I recall), The Seven Samurai is the greatest film the world has ever known (although I don't mean to overpraise it - and, well, I'm not) and Kwaidan is a collection of ghost stories.

Also of note on Tuesday night is The Order of Myths, appearing on the show Independent Lens, which most PBS channels run at 10 pm central/11 pm eastern on Tuesdays. The Order of Myths is one of the best documentaries of 2008, which was an unusually strong year for documentaries. The movie deals with the racially divided Mardi Gras of Mobile, Alabama with a deft touch that makes villains of none while carefully examining the history of racism and power that created the situation. It's stunningly great, and I don't just say this because I grew up in Mobile and am intimately familiar with the sticky racial and familial issues that filmmaker Margaret Brown bravely tackles. If you miss this because of your dedication to the Kurosawa movies on TCM, check your listings. My PBS channel is showing it again overnight on Wednesday night/Thursday morning at 3 am central time.

TCM is showing three excellent movies on Thursday, February 26, as well. In the morning is Charlie Chaplin's The Gold Rush at 5 am central/6 am eastern. In the evening, there's Bogey and Hepburn in The African Queen at 7 pm central/8 pm eastern and later Roman Polanski's masterpiece Chinatown at 11:15 pm central/12:15 am eastern.

What a strange and marvelous weekend of movie viewing that cable tv is promising! One could even call it felliniesque, should one be so inclined. In fact, after the third part of Hiroshi Inagaki's Samurai trilogy, it's all Fellini for the rest of the weekend. So you'd best bring your sense of wonder and delight, open a bottle or two or three of wine, fix yourself a delicious bowl of gnocchi and fresh pesto, and settle in!

First up is Samurai III: Duel At Ganryu Island on IFC Saturday morning, February 21 at 7 am central/8 am eastern. This is the climax of the Samurai trilogy that IFC has been showing on Saturday mornings for the last three weeks. And it's fantastic. As the accompanying video shows (and warning: there are spoilers in the video, although for those who have been watching the trilogy, the revelations within shouldn't be much of a surprise), the swordfight in Kill Bill: Volume I was nearly a shot-for-shot remake of the samurai battle in this movie.

Next, on Saturday evening, February 21 at 7 pm central/8 pm eastern and again at 10 pm central/11 pm eastern, Ovation is showing Fellini's 8 1/2, which is my second-favorite Fellini movie. I'm sure most of the readers of this blog are at least familiar with this movie, but man oh man, is it a worthwhile viewing, even for those who've seen it a dozen times. Marcello Mastroianni plays Guido Anselmi, a director of films who is so caught up in his own emotional turmoil that he cannot finish the screenplay for his current production. (Sidenote: His name is possibly a play on the names of the Renaissance painter Michelangelo Anselmi and the early philosopher St. Anselm, the father of ontology [which is the philosophy of being] and one of the first Western philosophers who attempted to argue rationally for the existence of God.) Anselmi is trapped in his memories and trying to hide from the mess he's making of his current project. This is required viewing for anyone who takes movies seriously as an artform. Another note: Ovation seems to be a recent addition to my cable lineup and I don't know anything about the format in which it shows movies. Are they uncut? Do they mess with the aspect ratio? I'm trying to assess whether this is more like AMC, which modifies movies so much that I'm loathe to recommend any, or TCM and IFC, which should be the gold standards for movies shown on cable. If it's the former, I'm less likely to recommend these in the future.

Finally, on Sunday, February 22, at 7 am, IFC is showing Fellini's Amarcord. If 8 1/2 whetted your appetite, Amarcord should be quite a feast. This is my favorite Fellini film, a fictional memoir of sorts based on a year in Fellini's childhood. It's funny and bawdy and sweet and terrifying, just like adolescence. Here's Salon's Andrew O'Hehir on why you should watch it. I don't always agree with his opinion, but here I wholeheartedly concur.

To keep you busy through the weekend, cable tv has a few movies worth watching. One is most decidedly not a good movie, but it's a stunning failure. The second has an interesting story behind it, at least, but I don't know if it's a good movie. The third is one of the best movies ever made. Choose wisely! Heck, choose them all.

First up is Spike Lee's Bamboozled (2000) on IFC Wednesday, February 18 at 11 pm central/12 am eastern. This may be Lee's angriest and most shocking movie, but all that fury leads him from one misstep to another. Lee has a good reason to be pissed. The history of entertainment in this country (and abroad, yes) is horribly racist and ugly, and quite a bit of that racism still permeates pop culture. However, Lee intends this movie to be a tribute to A Face In The Crowd and Network, two movies that never stoop to showing their story when they can tell it at the top of their lungs. First misstep! Lee centers all of the action on an extremely unlikeable Harvard-educated black TV executive played by Damon Wayans. Wayans shows his character to be a pretender to his social class with an accent that is, well, to call it effeminate doesn't capture its weirdness, but to call it otherworldly doesn't capture its fundamental prissiness. Second misstep! Then Lee throws in just about every type of black stereotype there is, plus a bunch of unthinking white people, and the whole story loses its message because it refuses to include any characters worth a damn. And that's not to mention the godawful climactic speech. One of the things that made Do The Right Thing so great was that the people in it seemed like real people who acted the way they did for real reasons. This movie is filled with marionettes. Definitely worth a viewing, just to see how and why a good idea from a director with talent (and no quality control) can go so very wrong.

Next up is The Human Comedy (1943) on TCM Thursday, February 19 at 5 am central/6 am eastern. I haven't seen this one, but I did read the novel years ago. And here's the thing: author William Saroyan was hired by MGM to write and direct this movie. But MGM was unhappy that it was running long, and Saroyan refused to cut anything. So he got the axe. He rushed to turn his screenplay into a novel and managed to get it published right before the movie was released. So anyway, I remember reading the novel in high school and thinking that it could use more darkness and despair. From what I understand, the book is much darker than the movie, which stars Mickey Rooney and Donna Reed, among others. But the movie was a hit, winning an Oscar for the screenplay and being nominated for Best Picture and Best Director. It seems to have captured a certain mindset of the mid-century American. And the main reason it's here is that I'm interested to see how it is, and it isn't available, to the best of my knowledge, on DVD. Oh, on more little piece of trivia: according to the IMDB, it features Robert Mitchum's first confirmed film appearance in the uncredited role of "3rd Soldier." Go get 'em, Bob!

Finally, on Friday, February 20, TCM is showing The Battle of Algiers (1966) at 9:30 am central/10:30 am eastern. This movie should be required viewing of all citizens of any nation that occupies another. It has the exact opposite effect of Bamboozled: your sympathies constantly shift throughout the movie as everyone in it is a real person with real motives for their actions. And everyone in it is doing horrible things for reasons they think justified. The French torture captured Algerians for information (side note: as Phil Nugent wrote so eloquently yesterday, Jean Martin, who plays Colonel Mathieu, passed away a couple of weeks ago), while pointing out that they, too, were survivors of Nazi prison camps. The Algerians bomb innocent civilians. It's easy to say, but hard to conceptualize: the battle for freedom is never a simple matter. Recommended for all thinking human beings.

Set Your DVR!: February 14 - 16, 2009

What promising movies, you may well ask, does TV have to offer this weekend? Well, I may well answer, there's the second part of a samurai epic, there's Tom Stoppard's deconstruction of Hamlet, and then there's a meditation on alienation in Swinging London! Wowee!, you may exclaim. Keep it down, I might reply, people are trying to blog in here. Perhaps you could tell me more, you may ask. Pushy, I might think, aren't you? But I would tell you anyway. And, as long as we're speaking in hypotheticals, this is what I might say:

First up is Samurai II: Duel at Ichijoji Temple on IFC Saturday morning (that's 2/14) at 7 am central/8 am eastern. If you caught Samurai I: Musashi Miyamoto last week, you know that this is a must-watch trilogy. If you missed it, go ahead and start here. I think you can pick the story up easily enough. Starring Toshiro Mifune. I should point out that the above clip is far murkier than the cinemascope colors in the actual movie.

On Sunday, IFC is showing Tom Stoppard's comedy Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead twice: first at 7 am central/8 am eastern and then again at 1:05 pm central/2:05 pm eastern. I'm sure you're aware of this movie or the play behind it, but just in case you need a refresher, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are minor characters in Hamlet who are convinced by Claudius (that's Hamlet's uncle, the King) to transport him to England, where Hamlet is to be executed. Hamlet escapes, but not before modifying the letter to the King of England so that Rosencrantz and Guildenstern will be executed in his stead. At the end of the play, a messengers arrives at the Danish court to inform Claudius that R & G are dead, only to find the Hall full of bodies (uh, spoiler?). Anyway, Stoppard's play and movie assume that the viewer has more than a passing familiarity with Hamlet and Beckett's Waiting For Godot. The events in the story are greater than R & G can understand, leading them to muse on life and fate and roles that people must play as they rush headlongs towards their fates.

Finally, on Sunday night (technically Monday morning) at 1 am central/2 am eastern, TCM is showing Blow-Up, Antonioni's strangely meditative film about the nature of reality. As in other Antonioni films, the central mystery of the film is unanswerable, but it causes an existential crisis in the lead character, who in this case is a fashion photographer who believes that he has photographed a murder. Antonioni injects an extra layer of cool by setting the time and place in mid-60s Swinging London, and the cast includes David Hemmings, a shockingly young Vanessa Redgrave, Jane Birkin, and the Yardbirds in full swing with Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck, who steals Pete Townshend's guitar-smashing schtick for the film. The clip above appears towards the end of the film, but I had to include it because of the lovely symmetry with the fake tennis match in the clip from Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Dead. Tennis matches: with a ball, they're only a game, but with no ball, they are metaphors for life.

LazyVision: Week Ending Feb. 14th

We know that fans of the Screengrab want the dish on what's happening now in Hollywood (hence the Weekend Box Office Report) and what's yet to come (hence the Morning Deal Report). We know you want to be aware of what's coming to home video, hence DVD Digest. And we know that sometimes, you just want to park yourselves in front of the tube to catch a good flick, hence Set Your DVRs!.

We also know that some of you are deeply, deeply lazy individuals. And, beyond that, you're cheap, and you can't figure out anything more technologically complicated than a light switch. (We say this in the most loving way possible, for we count ourselves in your number.) You want to be able to turn on the TV -- not the computer -- and watch a good movie, anytime you want, without having to program anything -- for free. After all, wasn't that the promise of the new modern era? Wasn't that the allure of the digital age -- any movie you want, any time you want, no waiting, no fees?

Well, assuming you have digital cable, Video On Demand was made for lazy gasbags like you. Most of the stuff shown on VOD is either pay-per-view or, to put it mildly, dire, but occasionally, a gem will pop up on the "Free Movies" feature as a reward for infinitely patient cheapskates like yours truly. So, once a week, we'll bring you a handful of not-completely terrible movies you can watch whenever you want, for zero dollars and change. (Check your local provider for channel details.)

- FEARnet this week is featuring Night of the Creeps as one of its free movies on demand. This underrated 1986 camp-horror classic from cult director Fred Dekker is a real winner -- it never takes its zombies-from-out-space-plot too seriously, and plays around with the conventions of the genre years before the Scream franchise got the idea. The characters are all named after cult directors (Raimi, Carpenter, Cronenberg, etc.), and best of all, it's held together by a swell performance from beloved tough-guy character actor Tom Atkins.

- The Sundance Channel's on-demand service is offering a look at John Huston's The Dead, gratis. The final film Huston ever made, it's also one of his finest and most personal; adapted from a very fine James Joyce short story, it features some astonishing performances (including by his daughter, Anjelica) in a story involving a woman's memories of her long-dead first love, and how it stirs emotions in her husband during an Epiphany gathering. Best of all, The Dead isn't currently available in a U.S. DVD release, so this opportunity is even more special.

- Turner Classic Movies also has an on-demand service, and free this week is the classic 1948 noir flick Naked City. Somewhere between solid post-war noir, hardboiled police procedural, and ripe pre-war crime drama, Naked City is a tightly wound look at every step of a brutal murder investigation in New York. Directed by legendary noir specialist Jules Dassin, Naked City features a terrific villain in Ted DeCorsia, a gritty semi-documentary filming style, and an absolutely gripping extended chase scene through the city. It was later made into a popular TV crime show in the 1950s .

- FEARnet's on-demand service coughs up another great free offering this week in Escape from New York. Made during the period when a new John Carpenter movie was cause for excitment, this cult classic takes place in a near-future dystopia where New York City is a maximum-security prison. When President Donald Pleasance's plane crashes there with the nuclear football on board, it's up to Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken, one of the all-time great screen bad-asses, to bail him out. Russell gamely waltzes with a swell cast that includes Adrienne Barbeau, Lee Van Cleef, Ernest Borgnine, Isaac Hayes, Harry Dean Stanton -- and good ol' Tom Atkins.

- Finally, TNT's on-demand service this week offers the chance to see John Singleton's Boyz N the Hood. The 1991 film set off a wave of west coast gangsta dramas, but Boyz was the first and is still one of the best, as Singleton (whose filmmaking skills are raw and exciting here) takes a look at a group of childhood friends who struggle in different ways against the rough life of gang-ridden south central Los Angeles. Larry Fishburne's performance is a standout, and this was one of the first movies in which evidence was presented that Ice Cube was a good actor -- evidence which has been sorely lacking in recent years.

Apologies for the lateness of the hour, but I quickly wanted to mention that TCM is showing Jacques Tati's utterly delightful Mon Oncle tomorrow (Wed, 2/11) at 12:30 pm central/1:30 pm eastern. Tati reprises his role as Monsieur Hulot, the bumbling and well-meaning holy fool he previously played in M. Hulot's Holiday and would play again in Playtime and Trafic. In this one, Hulot lives in a broken-down boarding house in a forgotten section of Paris where the dogs run free and the community streetsweeper always has something better to do. His beloved nephew, on the other hand, lives with his obnoxious parents in a modernist nightmare of a house that must be seen to be appreciated. Here's Hulot trying to understand the kitchen.

Again, I'm sorry to bring it up so late, but Mon Oncle is utterly delightful and I couldn't let it pass by without a mention.

The Dead, playing on the Sundance Channel on Saturday, February 7 at 9 PM central/10 PM eastern, with a repeat at 2 AM central/3 AM eastern. This was the last movie directed by John Huston--a Christmas story, it was released in December of 1987, less than two months after his death--and he went out in glory. It represented a stretch for Huston, reaching confidently into areas that he'd never explored in his previous films, and it's also different from other movies based on the works of James Joyce, which tend to moisten and fall apart from the directors' accumulated flop sweat as they realize they have no idea how to get the material to play. Huston gave the story a deceptively simple staging, assembling a fine cast of actors--Donal McCann as the hero Gabriel, Donal Donnelly, Dan O'Herlihy, Marie Kean, Cathleen Delany, Helena Carroll, and Anjelica Huston as Gabriel's wife--and using them to demonstrate what the right voices can do for Joyce's dialogue. (The members of this ensemble are uncanny at acting as if they'd been getting together for these ritual holiday dinners for so many years that they all know each other's weak spots and points of pride.) Then, at the very end, after Anjelica Huston's big monologue, he just steps back and closes on Donal McCann reciting the closing passages of the story, as if he were handing it back to its creator. Inexplicably, this movie is not currently available on DVD, so its reappearance on Sundance after a prolonged drop off the cable radar screen counts as a rare and wondrous thing.

Incidentally, Sundance's weekend schedule also includes multiple showings of Jeff Nichols's white trash tragedy Shotgun Stories, starting on Sunday, February 8 at 5:15 AM central/6:15 AM eastern and with a couple of repeats throughout the day. This information is provided as a public service in light of all the complaints we've been getting from people who haven't been able to find the movie on DVD. It's available on DVD, but there's been a terrific run on the damn things since Paul Clark bestowed upon it the honor of reviewing it by request.

Turner Classic Movies spends February sunk in its annual "31 Days of Oscar" programming, with the schedule decorated wall-to-wall with films that were nominated for Academy Awards. This is not traditionally TCM's most exciting time of the year, but they do generally pull out some oddball titles that have since lapsed into total obscurity, or at least general unavailability. Late tonight, at 2:30 AM central/ 3:30 AM eastern, the channel is showing 1952's The Atomic City, a B-movie thriller with an atomic-age plot gimmick--the villains are Commie spies who kidnap the son of a Los Alamos nuclear scientist in an attempt to get their hands on the formula for the A-bomb--that was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. (It was written by Sidney Boehm, whose other credits include The Big Heat.) Then, on Sunday, 7 PM central/ 8 PM eastern, TCM premieres Elia Kazan's directorial debut, the 1945 A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, based on Betty Smith's popular novel about family life in the Brooklyn tenements at the start of the the twentieth century. (James Dunn, who plays the ineffectual, drink-damaged patriarch, won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.) There's another TCM premiere later that night, 1 AM central/ 2 AM eastern: John Singleton's 1991 Boyz N the Hood. Unique among these movies, it's currently available on DVD, but how many chances are you going to have in this life to see Robert Osborne introduce an Ice Cube movie?

Set Your DVR!: February 2 - 9, 2009

This week has three movies to make your DVR (or, you know, you) happy! First you have a Preston Sturges sex romp straining against the Hays Code. Then a classic sci-fi version of The Tempest with Freudian overtones! And finally, the first third of an iconic samurai trilogy. Enjoy!

The Miracle of Morgan's Creek, playing on TCM on Thursday, February 5 at 7 pm central/8 pm eastern. The Hays Code forbade movies in which unmarried people had biblical knowledge of each other, if you know what I mean, and I think you do (hint: I'm not talking about smiting). But Preston Sturges had an idea about a movie in which a small-town lass goes out for a few drinks with some soldiers on their way to WWII and winds up pregnant by one of them. The character is named Trudy Kockenlocker, and if that's not enough for a quick dirty joke, she's played by the hot-to-trot Betty Dutton. To slide under the Hays Code bar, she's had a quickie marriage to the guy. Unfortunately, she can't remember his name. Professional bundle-of-nerves Eddie Bracken stars as her small-town pal stuck in the friend zone, but who wants to be so much more.

Forbidden Planet, playing on TCM on Friday, February 6 at 7 am central/8 am eastern. Many of the sci-fi flicks of this period are about creeping Communism or mindless anti-Communism (as if sacrificing basic civil liberties to fight an idea is anything other than preposterous). In this one, political philosophies are nothing compared to the horrors of the psyche. It's an adaptation of Shakespeare's The Tempest, starring Leslie Nielson in a dramatic (non-ironic, I mean) role, and it's a lot of fun.

Samurai 1: Musashi Miyamoto, playing on IFC on Saturday, February 7 at 7 am central/8 am eastern. This is the first of the Samurai trilogy, starring the always-amazing Toshiro Mifune as Musashi Miyamoto, one of the great swordsmen of Japanese legend. This is cinema at its most epic and iconic. If you watch this, be prepared to check back over the next two Saturdays for the next two parts, because the trilogy really must be seen as a whole.

Set Your DVR!: February 1, 2009

Here's the Weekend Edition of Set Your DVR! These three movies should carry you through until Monday, and all are on IFC on Sunday, February 1.

First up is an Akira Kurosawa double-feature. IFC is showing Drunken Angel at 7 am central/8 am eastern. Drunken Angel is Toshiro Mifune's first film with Kurosawa. It's a yakuza/gangster flick, and I've never seen it, so I'm excited about it. Also starring Takashi Shimura.

Immediately afterwards is Ikiru at 8:45 am central/9:45 am eastern, which is easily one of the most profound and touching films you could ever see. This one has Shimura in the lead as a dying bureaucrat who wants to leave his small mark on the world. I know that sounds like an opportunity for the worst sort of Forrest Gump-like cinematic idiocy, but remember that it's Kurosawa behind the wheel, not some Hollywood hack.

Set Your DVR!: January 26 - 30, 2009

Greetings, Screengrab readers! I've had to scale this column back to something a little more manageable, so I'm going to only be recommending a few movies a week. I hope y'all still find this useful. As always, let me know in comments if there's something that should be added to this post.

This week, I have three recommendations between Monday and Friday: a semi-obscure Altman movie, a documentary about the hardships of the labor movement, and the greatest (disregarding the simple fact that it's an anomaly) noir-horror-fairytale ever set on celluloid.

First off, IFC is showing Robert Altman's 1990 movie Vincent and Theo on Monday night. This is Altman's return to cinematic narrative after a string of films based on plays during the 80s (excepting O.C. and Stiggs and Tanner '88, of course). The movie stars Tim Roth and Paul Rhys and Vincent Van Gogh and his brother Theo, an art dealer. Not the greatest Altman film, but certainly a good one. Playing on IFC 1/26 at 7 pm central/8 pm eastern and later that night at 12:45 am central/1:45 am eastern.

On Wednesday, IFC has Harlan County, USA, the scalding 1976 documentary about striking coal miners in the 70s. Guaranteed to turn the mildest viewer into a card-carrying member of the IWW. Playing on IFC 1/28 at 6:15 am central/7:15 am eastern and again at 11:35 am central/12:35 pm eastern.

On Friday, TCM is showing The Night Of The Hunter from 1955. I'm guessing most Screengrab readers are familiar with this movie, but it's so good that there's rarely an adequate reason to miss it. As you may know, it is the only film directed by noted actor Charles "Quasimodo" Laughton. The screenplay was written by James Agee, whose very name should be cause for most readers and writers of movie criticism to genuflect. And it's near impossible to classify. Some call it film noir, but it's also equal measures horror movie and fairytale. I've had it on my mind recently since my iPod served up an excellent version of the music in the movie by the band Young People (who may or may not be defunct now, but the song is on their album War Prayers, which also has a song called "Stagecoach," that seems to be similarly inspired by the movie). The clip above is a long chunk of the movie, but I hope it will whet your appetite. It has whetted mine. Playing on TCM 1/30 at 11:45 pm central/12:45 am eastern.

Set Your DVR!: Carny Edition

Late Friday TCM is going for broke, carny-style. Starting at 1 am central/2 am eastern, TCM has lined up a handful of cult movies featuring little people and other actors of unusual physical appearance.

The first movie up is 1938's The Terror of Tiny Town, which is a Western musical drama (it's like I'm picking words out of a hat, right?) cast entirely with lttle people, many of whom would go on to be munchkins in The Wizard of Oz the following year. IMDB gives it a whopping 2.4 stars out of 10, but the reviews reveal a serious struggle to adequately describe the movie. Many of the reviewers appear to be conflicted about whether it's okay to laugh at the cast, especially when most agree that the cast approaches the material almost as if they were - get this - serious actors (spoiler: they were serious actors).

Next, at 2:11/3:11 am (seriously, this is programmed to play eleven minutes into the hour?), TCM has the short Three Chumps Ahead, about which I know nothing. But I'm going to recommend it on the basis of the word "chump" appearing in the title. Also, it's less than 20 minutes long. I mean, what else are you recording at that time of night? QVC?

The second feature, at 2:30/3:30 am, is The Unholy Three. This is the talkie from 1930, not Tod Browning silent version of 1925. Lon Chaney stars in both as the head of a group of thieves composed of sideshow performers. This was Chaney's first and only talkie, as he passed away shortly after completing it. Harry Earles, a little person of some note to fans of the Wizard of Oz, plays Chaney's sidekick.

Earles is also in TCM final movie, Freaks, playing at 3:45/4:45 am. Earles plays Hans, the little person married to the conniving trapeze artist Cleopatra. This one is, of course, the classic Tod Browning film, and it's almost impossible to do justice to it in a few sentences. In conclusion, gabba gabba hey.

Set Your DVR!: Last Night At The Alamo

I realize this is late notice, but I wanted to quickly mention that Eagle Pennell's little-seen classic Last Night At The Alamo will be shown on IFC tomorrow, which is Friday, January 9, 2009, at 5:30 central/6:30 eastern.

I've sure as hell never seen it. Since I live in Austin, TX, this has been a source of shame for me.

Here's what Jen Scoville says in The Texas Monthly:

With more cussing in the first five minutes (and throughout the film) than you can shake a stick at, this one offers an authentic insight into culture of the Texas barroom. Texas Chainsaw Massacre scribe Kim Henkel again puts a darkly comedic spin on a terrifying subject -- a group of drunk, potty-mouthed good ol' boys trying to keep their favorite Houston watering hole, the Alamo, from closing down. These realistic urban cowboys are colorful to say the least, and for such a low-budget enterprise, the acting is uniform and the black-and-white camera work dramatic.

Here's an interview with stars Lou Perryman and Sonny Carl Davis in the Austin Chronicle:

Austin Chronicle: Your characters in Pennell's films have such an easy, utterly convincing rapport. Was that there to begin with, or did it emerge as the two of you became friends in real life?

Lou Perryman: He had an ugly-ass mustache when I first met him [on "Hell of a Note"]; I remember that much.

Sonny Carl Davis: The rapport grew, I think, because as remains true with acting to this day, there's a feeling-out period, a "can you trust this guy?" period at the beginning of every film. There's power struggles. It can be a battleground or a lovefest.

Here's an utterly delightful interview with those same guys in the AV Club:

AVC: Lou, what made you decide you were done with acting?

LP: My political beliefs. My spiritual beliefs. It's all trash. And Chuck Norris, I'd flush that cocksucker down the toilet. What a pussy motherfucker. What a fucking cunt.

SCD: You rolling tape on this?

AVC: Yep.

LP: He's a pussy! Fuck Chuck Norris. I regret being in any of that goddamn Walker, Texas Ranger shit. Motherfucker couldn't act his way out of a rubber. Jesus, he's fucking terrible. People buy that as a Texas Ranger? A guy that's 5'5"? For God's fucking sake. And so much of it is just tawdry. Part of it, too, is my depressive mentality, and being frustrated. I thought I had plenty to offer. I went through the grandiosity of believing I was really good—and I was good at times.

Eagle Pennell may be the most important independent filmmaker you’ve probably never heard of. His movies aren’t easy to see; search Amazon.com for his 1984 feature Last Night at the Alamo and you’ll find one used VHS copy available for $44.99. You won’t find his last film, Doc’s Full Service, at all. His first feature, 1979’s The Whole Shootin’ Match, has recently been restored, however, and a DVD should be available soon. And while Shootin’ Match may not be his best effort (I’d vote for Alamo), it is his most important in the grand scheme of things because of who saw it when.

So, yeah. Watch it.

I also wanted to take a second to say that I can't continue this column the way I was doing it. It takes too much time to research and write every week and then I have no time for other work. What I'm going to do from here on is try to identify worthwhile movies, maybe 3 a week, a few days in advance, so I can post that they're coming on. Ang Lee's Ride With The Devil is a topsy-turvy Civil War film, while Sam Peckinpah's The Wild Bunch is not just the greatest Western, but the greatest film that this country has ever produced. CQ is about a lost young screenwriter in swinging Europe during the 60s making a Barbarella-like retro-future flick. Soylent Green is, uh, people. Heaven's Gate is an amazing, dull something.

It's the last day of the year, spend the sober part of it with America's (fictionalized) history. Stagecoach, the film that Orson Welles studied to learn how to direct movies, is surprisingly claustrophobic, given that it was shot in Monument Valley, and one of the most influential films ever made. And of course you've seen the two Sergio Leone movies before, but there's never a bad reason to watch one of the Man With No Name films.

9/10 am: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly on AMC.
1/2 pm: A Fistful of Dollars on AMC.

Thursday, January 1:

If you find yourself up early (or late), The Coen Brother's gangster film Miller's Crossing is the best movie they've made. TCM has a Cary Grant film festival running during the day, with the screwball classics Bringing Up Baby, The Awful Truth, and It Happened One Night (there's others, too, but these are the best). In prime time, TCM is running the original King Kong, which is an awe-inspiring movie. And Reservoir Dogs is, of course, the movie that launched Madonna's career.

Burden of Dreams is the documentary about the ambitious dreamer Werner Herzog slowly going insane while trying to film Fitzcarraldo, a movie about an ambitious dreamer who slowly goes insane. Harlan County, USA is a documentary about a mining strike in Kentucky in the 70s. After watching this movie, you may join the IWW. And Paranoid Park is Gus Van Sant's 2008 film about skateboarders and murder. It's in the vein of his Death Trilogy rather than his more conventional style, and it's topping many Best Of 2008 lists.

I don't know if your Christmas week is anything like mine (if you even have a Christmas week, that is), but every year, I spend an inordinate amount of time on the couch. It's a good way to be with family without having to, y'know, talk with anyone. I usually lay there, using my mind only to ponder how full my belly is and wondering how long it will take me to digest enough to make room for another slice of pecan pie. But this year, instead of mindless entertainment, I intend to engage with some movies! Maybe that will take my mind off of food. For a little while, at least. Here's what's good this week, in the central/eastern format. I'm also moving overnight movies to the prior day write-up, which is my policy from here forward.

Monday, December 22:

Monday offers two flicks about evil and naivety! What could be better than considering evil during the final weeks of the year? Au Revoir, Les Enfants is Louis Malle's examination of life in a French boarding school during the Vichy occupation. Our young protagonist seems to be going through normal kid issues, but his innocence is threatened by the War and his growing suspicion that a schoolmate might be a hidden Jew. The Quiet American is based on Graham Greene's novel about a not-so-well meaning journalist encountering a CIA agent in 1950s Vietnam. Strangely enough, the CIA agent may be the more naive of the two.

Tuesday's full of anti-war sci-fi in the AM! Maybe it's not great sci-fi, but it's (probably) worth a viewing, especially with impressionable young minds around you. Enemy Mine, one of my favorite movies when I was 13, is about setting asides differences in the face of a hostile universe. I haven't seen it since I was a kid, but I recall that it had a strong anti-war and pro-cooperation message. A far better movie (with far less latex and, well, mostly the same message) is the original The Day The Earth Stood Still, an untouchable classic that only a fool would attempt to remake. Finally, The Day After is a good way to wrap up the morning with some schlock that originally aired on TV when I was exactly the right age for a nascent political awakening (that would be 1983, when I was 11). In light of the dramatic depiction of the harshness of life after a nuclear attack on the US, I remember my shock and disbelief when I overheard President Granddaddy Ronald Reagan on TV pushing for more nuclear weapons. He lost my vote that day.

In the afternoon, there's John Ford's 3 Godfathers, which is like a Western version of Three Men And A Baby, only with death and despair. Awesome! Then Roman Polanski's The Pianist offers a little more death and despair. And finally, as a salve to all of this suffering, Lubitsch's The Shop Around The Corner is the sweetest and bestest romantic comedy that ever graced celluloid. (Note: the overnight movie discussed here rather than on the prior day for thematic purposes.)

Christmas Eve brings more despair! I recommend that you choose wisely and then go volunteer in a soup kitchen. Nobody Knows is a 2004 Japanese film based on a true story about children who were horribly neglected by an unfit mother and then abandoned to survive on their wits alone. Guaranteed to make the hardest heart break down and openly weep. Brother's Keeper is the uplifting documentary about a rural community that rallies around a near-feral farming family when one brother is accused of murdering another. The Delicate Art of the Rifle is a microbudget indie about a sniper on a college campus. Death and the Maiden is Roman Polanski's film (of the Ariel Dorfman play) in which a woman (Sigourney Weaver, who has never been better) is convinced that the man who gave her husband a ride home was the man who tortured and raped her while she was a prisoner of the previous brutal regime. It is stunningly good and sadly underappreciated. Finally, Bad Santa is the salve for all that ails us.

Saturday is about Japan. First up is The Greatest Story Ever Told, aka The Seven Samurai. I believe I recently wrote here that The Wild Bunch was the best film ever. That's only half-true, because The Seven Samurai is its equal. Damn, this movie is good. Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon isn't even close to the same league, but it's pretty great on its own. Finally, Hayao Miyazaki's Howl's Moving Castle is not the best Miyazaki movie, but it's wonderful and highly, highly recommended.

Sunday, December 28:

Wait, Sunday is about Japan. Rashomon, another film by Akira Kurosawa, is iconic and a must-see for fans of cinema, although it isn't quite as great as his best movies. The Bad Sleep Well is Kurosawa's corporate office take on Hamlet. Of his three Shakespeare adaptations (the other two are Throne of Blood/MacBeth and Ran/King Lear), it is the least, but it's full of his distinct sensibilities and very enjoyable. Finally, Malick's The Thin Red Line is half-war movie and half-nature documentary and all about the human soul. Overnight, there's Tati's utterly delightful Mr. Hulot's Holiday, which is full of wit and pratfalls.

And then put off whatever it is that you're supposed to be doing. Kiss of Death is one of the great film noirs. The Sweet Hereafter, Atom Egoyan's film based on Russell Banks's devastating novel, will ruin you in a good way. And The Player is Robert Altman's great tribute/kiss-off to Hollywood.

1:30/2:30 am: Elephant on IFC. Dreamy Van Sant flick about high school snipers.
3/4 am: Vanishing Point on FMC.
8:45/9:45 am: Paths of Glory on TCM.
5:30/6:30 pm: The Others on OXYGEN. Pleasantly creepy ghost story starring Nicole Kidman.
6:15/7:15 pm: The Player on IFC. Altman’s tour de force “conventional Hollywood” film, which starts with an extended homage to Touch of Evil and proceeds to tear down the walls of Old Hollywood.
8:30/9:30 pm: The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou on IFC. Many Wes Anderson fans felt that this was the moment when his whimsy and prop fetish finally overwhelmed his ability to tell a story. I think there’s a beating heart in this story, but The Darjeeling Limited was an unpleasant stillborn mess.
11 pm/12 am: The Face of Another on IFC. Brilliant and creepy Japanese horror film about the slippery nature of identity.

Saturday, December 20:

7/8 am: The Hidden Fortress on IFC. Akira Kurosawa’s tale of a princess in peril, swept away by war, protected by her loyal general, and kept constantly on the verge of trouble by a couple of bumbling peasants. Reportedly one of the major inspirations for Star Wars.

7:15/8:15 am: My Darling Clementine on AMC. Iconic John Ford Western about the shootout at the OK Corral.

5:35/6:35 pm: Gosford Park on IFC. Robert Altman’s brilliant upstairs/downstairs Edwardian murder mystery.
8:30/9:30 pm: Mulholland Dr. on LOGO. One of David Lynch’s best films, propelled by dream-logic and horror.

8:45/9:45 am: Kiss of Death on FMC. Top-notch film noir. Unfortunately, it’s playing at the same time as...
8:45/9:45 am: The Testament of Dr. Mabuse on IFC. Fritz Lang’s 1933 thriller that didn’t just invent the procedural, but built it on a parable about a crime boss able to mesmerize his subordinates with his words and imagery. Lang fled the Nazis for America almost immediately after its release. The ability of many of the scenes to retain their shock value today is a testament to this movie's sheer brilliance.

Monday, December 22:
2:45/3:45 am: The 400 Blows on TCM. Francois Truffaut’s incredibly powerful ode to child neglect and juvenile delinquency.

11 am/12 pm: Bringing Up Baby on TCM. A screwball comedy classic that everyone should see at least once in this all-too-short life.

The Movies:
2001: A Space Odyssey on TCM: 12/10 at 2:30 pm CST. Do you need a blurb about this movie? I doubt it.

2010 on TCM: 12/10 at 5 pm CST. I don’t think this is a great movie, but my god, it’s full of stars.

Brother’s Keeper on IFC: 12/13 at 8:45 am and 2 pm CST. Fantastic documentary on sibling murder and rural family values.

Cat People on TCM: 12/10 at 5 am CST. Val Lewton & Jacques Tourneur’s no-budget horror/suspense flick.

Cop Land on TNT: 12/12 at 3 am CST. I hate recommending movies that have almost definitely been cut for cable broadcast, but Cop Land is fairly surprising, being a Sylvester Stallone movie that’s actually pretty decent. I could be grading on a curve here.

CQ on IFC: 12/11 at 11:30 pm CST. Roman Coppola’s love-letter to the films of the 60s is not as bad as some argue, although it’s nowhere near as good as it could have been. Jeremy Davies may be the reason for both. I like the scene that copies a scene from La Dolce Vita from another angle.

Curse of the Cat People on TCM: 12/10 at 6:30 am CST. What’s that? Can’t get enough Cat People? Well, here’s a second helping.

Das Boot on TCM: 12/15 at 1:15 am CST. Shockingly, it's not actually about shoewear.

The Day The Earth Stood Still on AMC: 12/11 at 7 pm CST and 12/12 at 2:30 pm CST. Fuck a bunch of Keanu Reeves and his entirely unnecessary remake.

Dead Calm on CHILLER: 12/14 at 8 pm and 11 pm CST. Claustrophobic little suspense movie that takes place on one little boat out in the middle of the ocean.

Death and the Maiden on IFC: 12/12 at 8:45 pm CST. People may ask: why are Sigourney Weaver and Ben Kingsley considered such great actors? Well, they made this movie, an underappreciated Roman Polanski film about torture and its consequences.

The Delicate Art of the Rifle on IFC: 12/9 at 8:40 am and 3:35 pm CST. I saw an early showing of this when I lived in North Carolina, some ten years ago. It’s a micro-budget indie based on the Charles Whitman shooting at UT, and I seem to remember thinking that it was pretty good, although it went off the rails towards the end.

Elephant on IFC: 12/13 at 11:30 pm and 12/14 at 5:30 am. See Leonard’s write-up.

George Washington on IFC: 12/15 at 6:25 pm. Somewhere between Days of Heaven and Killer of Sheep.

The Godless Girl on TCM: 12/14 at 11 pm. Cecil B. DeMille’s last silent film from 1929. That’s all I know.

Jules et Jim on IFC: 12/14 at 7 am. Confession: I can’t stand this movie. Truffaut directed a number of the finest films of the French New Wave, but this one drives me nuts. This shouldn't keep you from seeing it. There's a reason so many people like it; I'm willing to accept that it's my blind spot that's the problem. But GOD I hate this movie.

Les Enfants du Paradis on IFC: 12/9 at 5:25 am and 12:05 pm. One of the great films of French cinema.

Metallica: Some Kind Of Monster on VH1CL: 12/12 at 10:30 pm and 12/13 at 7 pm. Entertaining even for non-fans of Metallica. Maybe even more so. This is what happens when multi-gazillionaires have trouble coming up with something to bitch about for their fans’ pleasure.

Mystery Train on IFC: 12/15 at 9:35 am and 2:45 pm. Mostly great Jarmusch flick about the creepy goings-on in a Memphis hotel overseen by Screamin’ Jay Hawkins.

Out of the Past on TCM: 12/9 at 5 am. One of the blackest and bleakest film noirs, starring Robert Mitchum and Kirk Douglas. Directed by the great Jacques Tourneur.

The Quiet American on IFC: 12/10 at 6:35 am and 1 pm. Decent film about Vietnam and betrayal starring Michael Caine and Brendan Fraser and based on a book by Graham Greene.

Vanishing Point on FMC: 12/10 at 3 pm. Must-see little existential car chase movie.

The Wild Bunch on AMC: 12/14 at 4 pm and 9:30 pm. Not to put too fine a point on it, but this is the best American movie, period. It's possibly the best movie made by anyone. On one level, it’s about bad men in bad times with a bad end coming at them fast. But that’s only one level.

Starting with a documentary called "Evolution of the Apes" at 5 am on Thanksgiving Day (here in the US, I mean; apologies to our friends elsewhere who will not be stuffing their faces with bird carcass and pie today), FMC is showing nothing but Planet of the Apes movies until Sunday. Rock me, Dr. Zaius!

10:30/11:30 am: The Godfather on AMC. Family. It's what's important in life.

2:30/3:30 pm: The Godfather, Part II on AMC. You should pointedly insist that your brother (or brother-in-law) sit down to watch this with you when the bastard swipes the last piece of pumpkin pie.

9:30/10:30 pm: Beneath the Planet of The Apes on FMC (too many repeats to mention here over the next four days). A guilty pleasure for some, which is why this POTA movie gets special notice. I should mention that I had no idea that there were so many POTA movies. I remember seeing a few when I was a kid, but I didn't realize that the series went on for so long. My favorite is Under The Volcano Of The Planet Of The Apes, in which Charlton Heston plays a burnt-out diplomat drunkenly careening from chimp bar to chimp bar while his luck slowly runs out.

1/2 am: The Harder They Come on TCM. Is this the finest rude boy movie ever made? It certainly has the best soundtrack.

7/8 am: THRONE OF BLOOD on IFC. Sorry for shouting, but it seems appropriate to shout when mentioning Throne of Blood, the all-time best version of Macbeth on film. You've got Kurosawa & Mifune. Medieval Japan. Cobweb Castle, witches, a walking forest, and a rain of arrows. Allegedly T.S. Eliot's favorite film. Throne of Fuckin' Blood.

6/7 pm: A Boy Named Charlie Brown on FAM (repeat 11/30 at 11 am/12 pm). Pardon my language. I got carried away. Since you might have family with you over the holiday weeked, perhaps it's a good time to revisit the classics of Charles Schultz? This is the one (as you may remember) about a spelling bee. No, not Spellbound, but you're close.

8/9 pm: Snoopy Come Home on FAM (repeat 11/30 at 1/2 pm). What will that rascal Snoopy do next?

7/8 am: Sansho The Bailiff on IFC. Fantastic drama about justice misserved in feudal Japan. It's not Throne of Blood, but it's not too far behind.

9/10 am: Twentieth Century on TCM. Classic screwball comedy.

9:05/10:05 am: High and Low on IFC. Frequent commenter Janet says she sometimes thinks this is the best Kurosawa/Mifune movie full stop. I sometimes agree with that.

3:30/4:30 am: The Man In The Gray Flannel Suit on AMC. Quite a contrast from Mad Men, but it should provide a little something to help tide us over.

5:05/6:05 am: Incident at Loch Ness on IFC (repeat at 10:15/11:15 am and 3:25/4:25 pm). This is not a great or even good movie. But it is rather fun to watch Werner Herzog parody himself.

5:15/6:15 pm: Ride The High Country on TCM. One of my all-time favorite films, this is the first movie Sam Peckinpah directed that's really a Peckinpah movie. Randolph Scott and Joel McCrea, two actors a little past their sell-by date, are perfectly cast as Old West gunfighters in a similar autumnal period of their lives. There's a fascinating shift in tone about halfway into the movie. I don't mean to detract from the first half when I say that it has that slight remove from reality that's not too unfamiliar to fans of earlier Westerns, especially those of John Ford and Anthony Mann. The cowboys may be tough, but they're pretty clean and well-spoken. At the halfway point, the action moves to a rough mining camp, which shepherds a more realistic look at the past: grimy, ugly, amoral. Westerns would never be the same.

12:45/1:45 am: Sunrise on TCM. One of the greatest film of the silent era. I was fortunate enough a few weeks ago to catch a showing of this in a friend's film class with a bunch of people in their late teens/early 20s. I was a little worried that some of the kookier silent movie tropes would lose the audience, but I was dead wrong. They loved it. It's a loveable movie.

8/9 am: Duel on CHILLER (repeat on 11/21 at 2/3 am). Spielberg's first film.

9:45/10:45 am: The Cars That Ate Paris (repeat at 2:35/3:35 pm). An oddball film from early in Peter Weir's career about a town that bolsters its income by causing horrendous car accidents.

8:45/9:45 pm: The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923) on TCM. This is the Lon Chaney version.

1/2 am: Citizen Kane on TCM. I don't know if you've ever heard of this film, but it apparently has some sort of reputation.

3:15/4:15 am: The Stranger on TCM. Orson Welles' most conventionally-directed movie.

8:45/9:45 am: High and Low on IFC (repeat at 3/4 pm). Kurosawa and Mifune do crime drama. Their best movie that doesn't involve samurais.

11 am/12 pm: Vanishing Point on FMC.

3:45/4:45 am: Die, Monster, Die! on TCM. In Germany, this is The Monster, The!

7/8 am: The Sword of Doom on IFC. One of the finest samurai movies that wasn't directed by Akira Kurosawa.

4:45/5:45 pm: Vertigo on TCM. I'm breaking my no-Hitchcock rule again. But no matter however long it's been since you last saw this, it's been too long.

6:55/7:55 am: Solaris on IFC (repeat at 2:40/3:40 pm). As I mentioned in our utopia/dystopia list from last week, Tarkovsky's Solaris is a stunning, somber look at alienation. This is a slow one, but it pays off in spades.

11 pm/12 am: The Thin Red Line on IFC (repeat on 11/12 at 4/5 am). Also a little slow. Also pays off in spades. Terrence Malick's take on the war movie falls somewhere between nature film and meditation on the soul.

Wed, Nov 12:

8/9 pm: Wild at Heart on IFC (repeat on 11/13 at 12:30/1:30 am). My least favorite Lynch. I don't even know why I'm recommending this.

12:30/1:30 am: Blow-Up on TCM. Antonioni's meditation the lens and the horror of other people, all in Swinging London. Not my favorite of his movies, but it's essential for movie geeks.

1/2 am: Vanishing Point on FMC. Cool cars & existential crises!

2:30/3:30 am: Quartet on TCM. Four stories by W. Somerset Maugham, as introduced by the man himself.

5/6 am: Isle of the Dead on CHILLER (repeat on 11/14 at 2/3 am). I'm tired of recommending Val Lewton-produced horror flicks. But this is a good one.

8:45/9:45 am: Amarcord on IFC (repeat at 2:20/3:20 pm and on 11/14 at 4:50/5:50 am). Fellini making the most Felliniesque movie of his career.

11:45 am/12:45 pm: The Shop Around The Corner on TCM. Date movies don't get better than this. True, the execrable You've Got Mail is based on this, but Lubitsch's movie has a wildly beating heart, which neither Meg Ryan nor AOL can claim.

3/4 pm: Rear Window on TCM. Everybody loves Hitchcock. I've been avoiding recommending his movies, because a) there's always a Hitchcock movie playing on TV somewhere and b) even the bad ones are good, so why bother recommending them? But Rear Window is so great that I just wanted to mention that it's going to be on.

5/6 pm: The Thomas Crown Affair on TCM. Q: Would I enjoy watching Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway doing mostly nothing for 2 hours? A: The Thomas Crown Affair.

2:45/3:45 am: The Haunting on TCM. As always, the Robert Wise movie, not the terrible remake.

7/8 am: Three Outlaw Samurai on IFC. Pretty good samurai movie.

7/8 pm: Paths of Glory on TCM. Kubrick's classic anti-war movie, starring Kirk Douglas as a man who is OUTRAGED that the military might be run by incompetent boobs. The actors who aren't chewing scenery might just tear your heart out.

1/2 am: Diabolique on TCM. One of my favorite suspense movies. The dread that permeates it never lets up until the heart-stopping finale.

6/7 pm: Restoration on IFC. Honestly, I can barely remember this movie, but I seem to recall that Robert Downey, Jr. killed in it.

8:30/9:30 pm: The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939) on TCM. The Charles Laughton version.

10:15/11:15 pm: The New World on IFC (repeat on 11/18 at 2:45/3:45 am). Just recently wrote about this one, too. Over-wrote, you might even say. Still, this is one of the best films of the last decade.

11/12 am: Rio Grande on TCM. Classic John Wayne/John Ford Western.

8:45/9:45 pm: The Public Enemy on TCM. Buncha dirty rats doin' low-down dirty-rat bidness.

6:45/7:45 am: Batman on AMC. The 1966 version. Shark repellent, my friends. Need I say more?

8:20/9:20 am: George Washington on IFC (repeat at 2:35/3:35 pm). I'm not always going to repeat prior recommendations, but man, I like this movie.

3:30/4:30 pm: The Enchanted Cottage on TCM. I've never seen this, but it is apparently a much-loved, hard-to-see romance between an injured soldier and a lady who isn't much to look at. Unreleased on DVD.

6:15/7:15 pm: Last Days on IFC (repeat 10/23 at 2:00 am).

7/8 pm: The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939) on TCM. This is the one with Charles Laughton.

2/3 am: I Walked With A Zombie on TCM. Not just a killer Roky Erickson song, this is another Tourneur/Lewton collaboration.

3:15/4:15 am: Isle of the Dead on TCM. Val Lewton production starring Boris Karloff.

4:30/5:30 am: The Body Snatcher on TCM. Val Lewton production starring Boris Karloff AND Bela Lugosi, directed by Robert Wise, and based on a Robert Louis Stevenson short story, of all things.

5:45/6:45 am: Shattered Glass on IFC. Some people missed this 2003 film in which Hayden Christiansen plays a character who is - get this - supposed to be wooden. Based on the true events around the fantasist Stephen Glass's deception of The New Republic

7:35/8:35 am: Manderlay on IFC (repeat at 1:35/2:35 pm). Lars von Trier's follow-up to Dogville is about a Southern plantation in the 1930s that has never freed its slaves. Do you like von Trier? Then you'll probably like this.

2:15/3:15 pm: D.O.A. on TCM. Film noir classic.

UPDATE: 8 pm (not sure of the time zone): Red Sun on Retroplex (free on Comcast Digital). This is a Western starring Charles Bronson, Ursula Andress, Alain Delon, and Toshiro Mifune. Whoa! Thanks to Janet for the hat tip.

5:15/6:15 am: The Curse of Frankenstein on AMC. Classic Frankenstein movie starring Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee.

7/8 am: Kiru on IFC (repeat at 1:50/2:50 pm). Samurai comedy! Yep.

8/9 am: Night of the Living Dead on SCIFI. Oh, you know this one already? You must have brains. Braaaaaaains.

11:30 pm/12:30 am: Catwoman on OXYGEN. Perhaps the scariest movie of the Halloween season. This movie has Halle Berry in the lead! (BWA-HA-HA!) And she’s trying to be sexy/sultry/non-robotic! (AAAAAAAH!) Actually, this is far too scary for anyone to view.

Sun, Oct 26:

12:45/1:45 am: The Honeymoon Killers on TCM. Brilliant and utterly repellent movie based on the true story of the Lonely Hearts Killers, who preyed on divorced women in the late 40s. Between this and Mad Men, you get the feeling that the mid-20th century wasn't such a great time to be an independent women.

7/8 am: The Ghost of Yotsuya on IFC. Ghosts! Samurais! Spurned Wives! Revenge!

10:00/11:00 am: The Flower of Evil on IFC. Directed by the Hitchcock-influenced Claude Chabrol. I haven't seen this one, but I run hot and cold on Chabrol movies.

1/2 pm: Kiss of Death on FMC. Fantastic film noir.

2:30/3:30 pm: An American Werewolf in London on AMC. This isn't a great movie, but it has a few great - I'd go as far as "iconic" - scenes, most notably David Naughton's transformation into the title monster. Does AMC cut for content? I often skip movies showing on AMC because I hate watching commercials during films. And I don't know if the movies are running uncut with commercials or cut down for size. Let me know in comments if you have a better idea about what AMC is doing.

Mon, Oct 27 (ze spillover from Sunday):

1:30/2:30 am: Vampyr: Der Traum des Allan Grey on TCM. Now this is a great movie, Dreyer’s 1932 vampire epic. One of the greatest vampire movies ever made, in fact, up there with Nosferatu. I don't know how it will look in this cut, but I believe that time and neglect have left all existing prints somewhat faded.

3/4 am: Hush... Hush, Sweet Charlotte on AMC. Horror film starring Bette Davis, Olivia de Havilland, Joseph Cotten, and Agnes Moorehead. Sounds like a recipe for overheated Southern goth to me, but it's pretty highly rated, so what do I know?

11 am/12 pm: An American Werewolf in London on AMC. Repeat.
