Sam is weeks away from completing a three-year stint that will end with the arrival of his replacement and his return to Earth. He&amp;#39;s settled into a hermit&amp;#39;s existence, kibbutzing with &amp;quot;Gerty&amp;quot;, an all-purpose computer gofer with the voice of Kevin Spacey, letting his hair and beard grow out for weeks at a time, then getting a shave and a haircut to check in with his family and company masters back on Earth via telescreen conferences. Then...something happens. It would be unfair to give too many plot details away, since &lt;i&gt;Moon&lt;/i&gt;, with its limited cast and scenic options, needs all the surprises it can hold in reserve. But the movie does turn on the idea that, in the future, technological advances will make work in space routine, grubby, even tedious, and that the corporations on whose behalf this work is performed may regard their intergalactic labor force less as Buck Rogers heroes than as insects whose air supply can easily be cut off if they present any inconveniences. In interviews, Jones has gone out of his way to pay tribute to the movies that plowed this line of speculation in the past, including &lt;i&gt;2001&lt;/i&gt; but also such later sci-fi films as &lt;i&gt;Silent Running, Alien&lt;/i&gt;, and &lt;i&gt;Outland&lt;/i&gt;. Back in Kubrick&amp;#39;s day, the idea that &lt;i&gt;anything&lt;/i&gt; about life in outer space could ever become so routinized that it might become boring was a fresh joke, and even then, there were scenes in &lt;i&gt;2001&lt;/i&gt; that maybe went beyond the call of duty in showing just how boring things in space could get. (There&amp;#39;s a reason that it&amp;#39;s not easy to recall, just of the top of  your head, what&amp;#39;s the &lt;i&gt;second&lt;/i&gt; best movie starring either Keir Dullea or Gary Lockwood.) It takes a special kind of genius to depict tedium without seeming tedious, and in fact, tedium is something that &lt;i&gt;Moon&lt;/i&gt; has plenty of.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;i&gt;Moon&lt;/i&gt; does have the look and feel of a labor of love. Jones shot it in 33 days, on a tight schedule, at England&amp;#39;s Shepperton Studios, and he and his team, which includes the production designer Tony Noble, the art director Hideki Arichi, and the cinematographer Gary Shaw, did a hell of a job, especially on the interiors of the base where Rockwell and his robot sidekick make their home. (Outside, the miniatures used for the rovers that tootle across the lunar surface look very much like toys. This aspect of the film is not without its charms, compared the glossy hollowness of so much CGI animation, but it doesn&amp;#39;t do much for the movie&amp;#39;s attempt to sustain the illusion of where we are.) The look of the movie is hermetic and businesslike; it looks lived-in and smells of stale air. Jones is obviously taken with the idea of what it would be like to spend years of yourself trying to keep yourself amused in this dead, lonely environment without choking to death on the packaged food and fluorescent light. The only problem is that he&amp;#39;s perfectly achieved an environment that would be convincingly horrible to live in, and failed to supply much in the way of the distraction from this nightmare that some more characters and knottier plot threads could have provided. As soon as you&amp;#39;ve had some time to admire the effort that went into creating this world, you&amp;#39;re as eager to get the hell away from it as Sam.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;i&gt;Moon&lt;/i&gt; is Sam Rockwell&amp;#39;s one-man show; he&amp;#39;s really the only person in it. It might have been fun to see a flashy actor like the Kevin Spacey of old in this role; he could have really broken a sweat to keep you watching. (Spacey&amp;#39;s voice performance as Gerty basically comes down to the inside joke of hearing Spacey, the most untrustworthy actor imaginable, spending the whole movie sounding solicitous. Compared to such precursors as &lt;i&gt;2001&lt;/i&gt;&amp;#39;s HAL 9000 and &lt;i&gt;Alien&lt;/i&gt;&amp;#39;s Mother, Gerty is probably the &lt;i&gt;nicest&lt;/i&gt; all-powerful electronic intelligence in the genre&amp;#39;s history, but it&amp;#39;s hard to put your trust in it, just because it sounds like Verbal Kint.) Rockwell is an amusing, likable actor, but here he doesn&amp;#39;t supply enough presence of invention to hold you on his own. A talented comedian, Rockwell was well cast in the &lt;i&gt;Star Trek&lt;/i&gt; spoof &lt;i&gt;Galaxy Quest&lt;/i&gt;, in which he played an actor who, thrust into an actual sci-fi adventure, rebelled--pettishly, with his voice set at full whine--against his identity as the guy who&amp;#39;s added to the regular group of characters so there&amp;#39;ll be someone to kill off. When things go badly for Sam Bell, Rockwell turns in limply upon himself, and for long stretches doesn&amp;#39;t even have anyone to whine at. And Hunt and his screenwriter, Nathan Parker, are too vague on the details of how the company&amp;#39;s three-year plans work; you get the feeling that nobody is ever supposed to make it back to Earth at all, which makes it odd that there is in fact a functional escape pod handy. &lt;i&gt;Moon&lt;/i&gt; has details you can drink in and a faint, dreamy emotional ache (amplified by the score by Clint Mansell), but the stuff that the details and atmosphere should be there to serve--the people and the story-- never come into focus. It feels more like the work of a hobbyist than an artist. &lt;p&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;As digital effects become cheaper and more accessible, more independent filmmakers have been able to tackle genre films that would have been unavailable to them a few decades ago. Consider the upcoming film &lt;i&gt;Moon&lt;/i&gt;- whereas a big-budget movie about a long-term lunar mission might colonize the titular orb with a crew that spans multiple races and age groups, newcomer Duncan Jones’ film basically tells the story of one man played by Sam Rockwell, alone on the moon with only a robot (voiced by Kevin Spacey) and occasional transmissions from Earth to keep him company. Of course, a role like this requires a particular kind of actor, and Rockwell looks pretty perfect here, being the sort of performer who always begins to start with a screw loose only to gradually lose more as the stories progress. The premise of the film seems to owe something of a debt to &lt;i&gt;Solaris&lt;/i&gt; (pick one), but one hopes that Jones will find an interesting wrinkle on it. Also this week, Criterion is releasing David Lean’s &lt;i&gt;Hobson’s Choice&lt;/i&gt;, and single-film re-pressings of two more John Cassavetes films, &lt;i&gt;Faces&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;Shadows&lt;/i&gt;. More wheeling and dealing, via &lt;a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/awards_festivals/news/e3ife1903a36d09a1d8f9a916d526d94420" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;i&gt;The Hollywood Reporter&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/a&gt;:  Fox Searchlight snapped up the rights to the New York romance &lt;i&gt;Adam&lt;/i&gt;, which it “hopes to turn it into the next &lt;i&gt;Once&lt;/i&gt;, which it acquired here in 2007.”  Sony Pictures Classics won the bidding war for &lt;i&gt;An Education&lt;/i&gt;, “for a price in the $3 million-$4 million range for North American and select Latin American rights.”  Lionsgate picked up “&lt;i&gt;The Winning Season&lt;/i&gt;, James Strouse&amp;#39;s tale of a high-school girls&amp;#39; basketball team starring Sam Rockwell.”

This year’s Sundance It Girl has been coronated.  Per &lt;a href="http://hollywoodinsider.ew.com/2009/01/sundance-sweeth.html" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;i&gt;Entertainment Weekly&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/a&gt;, it’s 23-year-old British actress Carey Mulligan.  “The star of Lone Scherfig&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;An Education&lt;/i&gt; and the bright spot in Shana Feste&amp;#39;s melodrama &lt;i&gt;The Greatest&lt;/i&gt;, Mulligan is transfixing audiences with her angelic looks and broad acting range.”  You can also catch her in Michael Mann’s upcoming Dillinger epic &lt;i&gt;Public Enemies&lt;/i&gt;, with Johnny Depp and Christian Bale.

&lt;p&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;To be fair, it’s hard not to get excited – or at the very least just a little curious – about an indie sci-fi flick starring Sam Rockwell and directed by David Bowie’s son, Duncan Jones. For all that, though, &lt;em&gt;Moon&lt;/em&gt; turns out to be a curiously bloodless affair – precisely directed, expertly acted, but cold to the touch, perhaps by design. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As Sam Bell, the sole occupant of a lunar mining base where he’s helping harvest energy from the moon’s surface, Rockwell has to give us both a sense of his dreary, solitary existence (the job is a three-year contract) and the calmly methodical personality trait demanded of space travelers. In other words, he has to do what Keir Dullea did in &lt;em&gt;2001: A Space Odyssey&lt;/em&gt; – but he also has to find a way to carry the film’s emotional weight, since he’s all we got. (Dullea, at the very least, had Gary Lockwood and Strauss to keep him company.) Rockwell does what he can – when he attempts to talk to his wife and daughter on Earth, we do get a sense of his longing. By contrast, Gary Lockwood’s response to an intra-galactic transmission from mom and dad in &lt;em&gt;2001 &lt;/em&gt;was comically flat. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;These &lt;em&gt;2001&lt;/em&gt; references aren’t just obligatory; Moon replicates or references so many of the Kubrick film’s elements (it even has a dry shipboard computer, Gertie, voiced by Kevin Spacey) that it sets up strange narrative expectations; such aggressive referentiality is often a sign that a film is about to take a sharp left turn at some point. For my part, I kept waiting for it to turn into &lt;em&gt;The Truman Show&lt;/em&gt;. It doesn’t do that (sigh), but it does contain two major twists -- both of which are somewhat predictable, though still not worth giving away. Let’s just say that Sam is not quite alone. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jones does have a deft stylistic touch; the film feels composed without being showy, and the chilly aura of the moonbase certainly comes through. None of this is particularly original, mind you, except for the fact that this is a sci-fi film made for a low budget that never betrays its price tag: One suspects that Steven Soderbergh spent many times more on his remake of &lt;em&gt;Solaris&lt;/em&gt; and got pretty much the same look. Come to think of it, the glacial, submerged melodrama of Soderbergh’s film might make for a better comparison than the Kubrick. Save for the presence of Rockwell, who has slowly become one of our finest actors and almost saves the day here. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So why then did Moon fall so flat for me? Perhaps because it didn’t quite get to where it felt like it needed to be going. It starts off as a film about alienation, but as the story progresses, it becomes more a film about co-dependence. (It is, after all, called &lt;em&gt;Moon&lt;/em&gt;.) But the style of the film still seems stuck in that glacial register where everything is static, haunted, and silent. This seems par for the course with “thinking man’s sci-fi” films, which suggests that genre fans will enjoy it more. Mickey Rourke isn’t taking any chances with this whole comeback thing.  Just yesterday we told you Rourke has joined&lt;i&gt; The Expendables&lt;/i&gt;, and today &lt;a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/news/e3i41ac0111ebdf301087d8af4d5e75bd16?loc=interstitialskip" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;i&gt;The Hollywood Reporter&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/a&gt; has the scoop on The Wrestler’s role in &lt;i&gt;Iron Man 2&lt;/i&gt;.  “Marvel has been keeping a very tight lid on the script for the sequel, being written by Justin Theroux, but it is known that Rourke would play a tattooed Russian heavy named Ivan who becomes Whiplash, a man with deadly, technologically enhanced coils.”  Wait, isn’t that Dr. Octopus?  Anyway, Rourke won’t be alone in terrorizing fellow comebacker Robert Downey, Jr. – since one villain never seems to be enough for any superhero sequel, Sam Rockwell is also aboard as “Justin Hammer, a multibillionaire businessman and a rival of industrialist Anthony Stark, AKA Iron Man.”

I’ve been spending the waning days of the George W. Bush era immersed in &lt;i&gt;Nixonland&lt;/i&gt;.  Rick Perlstein’s massive, compulsively readable tome makes a convincing case that Richard Nixon capitalized on the divisions in ‘60s America so successfully that he defined the political landscape for decades to come.  I’m only halfway through the book – early 1969, to be specific – so please don’t ruin the ending for me.  My guess is that Nixon is elected to three more terms and his face is carved on Mt. Rushmore.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
But I kid.  I’m actually aware that Mr. Nixon had something of an ignominious downfall, and that some years later he sat down to discuss the matter with British chat show host David Frost.  I never would have guessed that the backstage finagling behind this momentous meeting would serve as the basis for a critically-acclaimed Broadway play, let alone a Ron Howard movie.  Politics does indeed make strange bedfellows.  But while I have my doubts that this is a story that needed to be told, &lt;i&gt;Frost/Nixon&lt;/i&gt; tells it in such a brisk, engaging way, it’s easy to forgive a few notable missteps.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Don’t get me wrong; it’s not that I’m convinced what has ended up on the screen here bears much resemblance to the actual behind-the-scenes intrigue of the Frost/Nixon interviews.  The play by Peter Morgan (who has adapted it for the screen) is probably at least 50% speculative nonsense, but you could say the same for Robert Altman’s 1984 foray into Nixonia, &lt;i&gt;Secret Honor&lt;/i&gt;, and that film would be no less riveting for it.  Howard isn’t on Altman’s level (please, don’t stop the presses), but for the most part he stays out of the way and lets the two lead actors do their thing.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
They’ve been doing that thing for a while now.  Michael Sheen and Frank Langella originated the roles of Frost and Nixon on London’s West End, and Langella won a Tony for his presidential portrayal when the production moved to Broadway.  As the movie opens, Frost is hosting an Australian variety show, having lost his high-profile gig on American television, and he’s itching to get back to the big time.  He sees his opening when President Nixon resigns in disgrace in 1974.  Working on his memoirs, the ex-Prez wants a big payday for his first exclusive TV interview, and the U.S. networks are unwilling to pony up.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Enter the unlikely Frost, a man best known for chit-chatting with lightweights.  (The real Frost disputes this, insisting he had interviewed many political giants before landing the big fish.)  He gets Nixon to agree to four 90-minute specials, the last of which will focus exclusively on Watergate, then sets about cobbling together a syndicated network and sponsorship agreements with the likes of Weed-Wacker in order to meet Nixon’s seven-figure price.  Frost brings aboard a team of Nixon experts to help him sharpen the knives for the grand inquisition, but as filming gets underway it is Nixon who has the upper hand, gassing on at length about his accomplishments and leaving Frost gasping for air.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Can Frost pull it together in time to nail Nixon to the wall once and for all in the climactic Watergate interview?  As I recall, the general reaction to the actual Nixon/Frost interview has always been…eh, not really.  (The real thing is now out on DVD, although I haven’t had a chance to check it out yet.)  Still, Howard and Morgan do a capable job of milking the drama out of this question, only occasionally overreaching, as in an imagined late-night drunken phone call from Nixon to Frost.

The supporting cast, including Oliver Platt, Sam Rockwell, Kevin Bacon and Toby Jones, is excellent, but I need to single out Rebecca Hall, mainly because I didn’t recognize her at all from &lt;i&gt;Vicky Cristina Barcelona&lt;/i&gt; and so every time she appeared on screen I made a mental note to check IMDb as soon as I got home to find out where this wondrous being had been all my life.  The ’70s style definitely works for her.  
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
More importantly, Sheen and Langella expertly tango their way through the steps of this adversarial alliance between interviewer and subject.  Sheen is equal parts showman and con man, revealing just enough vulnerability to earn our affections.  Like Philip Baker Hall and to some extent Anthony Hopkins before him, Langella is a mythic, larger-than-life Nixon, but he leaves you with at least a smidgen of sympathy for the devil.

The theater was filled with big studio Men in Black armed with night vision goggles and whatnot to prevent any pirating of their upcoming release...odd, considering the much more likeable and successful &lt;em&gt;Knocked Up&lt;/em&gt; got screened at the 2007 festival without nearly so much off-putting, paranoid nonsense. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Anyway, &lt;em&gt;Choke&lt;/em&gt; tells the story of sex addict Sam Rockwell and his sex addict friends (including Joel Grey?!!?!?) and their struggles with sex addiction, which is apparently a terrible problem in Los Angeles and, uh, probably other places (like the story&amp;#39;s New Jersey setting, Palahniuk&amp;#39;s Washington State stomping grounds and wherever David Duchovny happens to be at any given moment)...although, to be fair, I’m guessing the condition is &lt;em&gt;more&lt;/em&gt; of a problem for sex addicts who &lt;em&gt;don’t&lt;/em&gt; get to screw around with gorgeous starlets like Kelly Macdonald and Bijou Phillips. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Rockwell’s character also likes to pretend he’s choking in restaurants, because the attention it brings him makes up for the love he was denied by his wacky, now Alzheimer’s-afflicted mother (played by recent bad-mom specialist Anjelica Huston). &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ho-hum. Gone Baby Gone&lt;/i&gt; director Ben Affleck “will rewrite, direct and star in &lt;i&gt;The Town&lt;/i&gt;, a Warner Bros. adaptation of the Chuck Hogan novel &lt;i&gt;The Prince of Thieves&lt;/i&gt;,” according to &lt;a href="http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117992226.html?categoryid=13&amp;amp;cs=1" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;i&gt;Variety&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/a&gt;.  He’ll play a thief who falls for a bank manager in the movie “based in Charlestown, Mass., a gritty blue-collar Boston suburb similar to the one that Affleck captured in his directorial debut.”  Way to make those Red Sox season tickets work for you, Ben.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before:  Loser gets shot at redemption by coaching team of young misfits.  This time around it’s called &lt;i&gt;The Winning Season&lt;/i&gt; and stars Sam Rockwell as the has-been coach “asked to run the local high school&amp;#39;s girls basketball team,” per &lt;a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/film/news/e3i6f1a24d20528a54702da2892e5baa5f8" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;i&gt;The Hollywood Reporter&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/a&gt;.  Emma Roberts and Rob Corddry co-star.

Seven &lt;i&gt;Children of the Corn&lt;/i&gt; movies simply weren’t enough, so the original will be remade.  David Anders of &lt;i&gt;Heroes&lt;/i&gt; and Kandyse McClure of &lt;i&gt;Battlestar Galactica&lt;/i&gt; will play “Burt and Vicky, a couple with marital problems whose attempt at a  second-honeymoon driving trip ends up taking them into a seemingly deserted rural community that conceals a grim secret among its rows of tall corn.”

We’ve reached that part of the summer when Rainn Wilson comedies and films by Fred Durst are considered top new releases, so it must be time to look ahead to the fall.  Traditionally this is the movie season for Oscar contenders and challenging indie fare, so let’s put away the robots and superhero tights and play a little 3 Up, 3 Down.  (Feel free to weigh in with your own picks, my fellow Screengrabbers – &lt;i&gt;if you dare&lt;/i&gt;.)
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;
3 UP
&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;
1. Burn After Reading&lt;/b&gt; – &lt;i&gt;No Country for Old Men&lt;/i&gt; was a return to form for the Coens, and we’re all happy they finally got their Oscars.  But it’s been a while since we’ve had a pure shot of that Coen Brothers feeling.  &lt;i&gt;No Country&lt;/i&gt; was adapted from a Cormac McCarthy novel, &lt;i&gt;The Ladykillers&lt;/i&gt; was a remake, and &lt;i&gt;Intolerable Cruelty&lt;/i&gt; originated with other writers.  Based on the trailer, &lt;i&gt;Burn After Reading&lt;/i&gt; looks like a return to the inventive goofiness of &lt;i&gt;The Big Lebowski&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;O Brother Where Art Thou?&lt;/i&gt;, which puts it right in my wheelhouse.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;
2. The Road&lt;/b&gt; – Speaking of Cormac McCarthy, the second adaptation of his work in as many years in due in November.  The grim post-apocalyptic tale is brought to the screen by John Hillcoat, director of &lt;i&gt;The Proposition&lt;/i&gt;, a western that certainly counts McCarthy’s &lt;i&gt;Blood Meridian&lt;/i&gt; among its influences.  Viggo Mortenson has the lead, and the supporting cast includes Charlize Theron, Guy Pearce, Robert Duvall, Garrett Dillahunt and &lt;i&gt;The Wire&lt;/i&gt;’s Omar himself, Michael K. Williams.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;
3. Synecdoche, New York&lt;/b&gt; – Charlie Kaufman’s directorial debut didn’t exactly wow most critics at Cannes, but the guy hasn’t let me down yet.  (Well, &lt;i&gt;Confessions of a Dangerous Mind&lt;/i&gt; didn’t really do it for me, but I’ll blame Sam Rockwell for that.)  Even if it doesn’t really work, the premise – which has theater director Philip Seymour Hoffman building a replica of New York in a warehouse – should provide more of the Kauf’s trademark reality-bending weirdness.

3 DOWN
&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;
1. The Day the Earth Stood Still &lt;/b&gt;– Unnecessary remake of a sci-fi classic, with Keanu Reeves as an alien?  The first time I saw this trailer, I thought it was a fake. The second time, I just said “No thanks.”

2. Twilight&lt;/b&gt; – I understand I’m not the target demographic for this “y.a.” phenomenon, but I still resent the fact that it’s in my face everywhere I go these days, and that’s only going to get worse as the release of this adaptation approaches.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;  
3. The Women&lt;/b&gt; – This has got to be the uber-chick flick of the year: Meg Ryan, Annette Bening, Eva Mendes, Bette Midler and Debra Messing in a remake of the George Cukor classic.  If I grow a vagina between now and when it comes out, maybe I’ll reconsider.

Oliver Stone’s &lt;i&gt;W&lt;/i&gt;.  This can’t possibly be any good, can it?  And yet I can’t wait to see it.  We might be looking at a train wreck for the ages here.

the green door, there’s a sleazy little sub-basement even &lt;em&gt;deeper&lt;/em&gt; underground than our fearless movie janitor &lt;a class="" href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2008/08/11/unwatchable-75-the-last-sign.aspx"&gt;Scott Von Doviak’s IMDB Bottom 100&lt;/a&gt;...and it’s completely filled with &lt;strong&gt;&lt;font style="BACKGROUND-COLOR:#000000;" color="#ffffff"&gt;PORN!!!!!&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And I don’t mean Zalman King-esque softcore erotica like I’m talking &lt;em&gt;Gilligan’s Bi-Land&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;The Anus Family&lt;/em&gt; and &lt;em&gt;Blow Job Adventures of Dr. Fellatio 2&lt;/em&gt; down-and-dirty bachelor-party-stag-film &lt;strong&gt;PORN&lt;/strong&gt;! &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now, don’t ask how I stumbled upon this discovery. It’s not what you think, I swear.&amp;nbsp; And I’d tell you the whole story, but it involves a (possibly drunken) revelation by a complete stranger at a D-list awards show, about an estranged family member who’s spent the past few decades shaming her father’s good and quasi-famous name as an adult film actress, and I really don&amp;#39;t wish to be the cause of any more heartache for the family.&amp;nbsp; But the upshot of the whole thing was, at one point in the evening, the aforementioned (possibly drunken) stranger casually mentioned how she actively avoids the Internet Movie Database and discourages people from using it, lest they inadvertently discover the fateful and unfortunate link between her silver fox husband and his bleach-blonde black sheep progeny. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Naturally, I jumped on the computer as soon as I got home, and immediately clicked over to the IMDB to see if the stranger’s cockamamie story&amp;nbsp;could possibly be&amp;nbsp;true. First I looked up the father...and there, right under his date of birth and hometown was a listing of the veteran actor’s family members...including, yes, the infamous link to his estranged daughter’s very own database page, featuring 31 “acting” credits in roles ranging from “Teen Hiding In Closet” and “First Rape Victim” to a cameo (as herself) opposite Ron Jeremy, whose own database page, had I ever bothered to check it out before, would have clued me into the IMDB’s hidden porn stash long before now, given its genre-busting inclusion of credits ranging from &lt;em&gt;Nash Bridges&lt;/em&gt; to &lt;em&gt;Faster Pussycat, Fuck! But while character work as diverse as &lt;i&gt;Confessions of a Dangerous Mind&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;The Assassination of Jesse James&lt;/i&gt;, and &lt;i&gt;Joshua&lt;/i&gt; (my favorite performance of 2007, case you’re wondering), has made him one of the most fascinating actors currently working, he still hasn’t managed to find a true star-making role. If its trailer is any indication, &lt;i&gt;Choke&lt;/i&gt; could change that. Based on a novel by &lt;i&gt;Fight Club&lt;/i&gt; author Chuck Palahniuk, &lt;i&gt;Choke&lt;/i&gt;’s Victor Mancini is a perfect fit with the smart-assed, sleepy-eyed underachiever types that Rockwell as always excelled at playing. But what distinguishes this film is that Victor is the protagonist, as we follow his misadventures as a con man and sex addict trying to care for his terminally-ill mother and finding a way to be not completely irredeemable as a person. But while director Clark Gregg’s style appears to be a far cry from David Fincher’s attention-grabbing &lt;i&gt;Fight Club&lt;/i&gt; visuals, he’s at least had the good sense to surround Rockwell with a worthy cast of costars, especially Anjelica Huston as his mother and Kelly MacDonald (*drool*) as the tentative object of his affection. However, fans of his old style can rejoice in the fact that he&amp;#39;s still got one more indie waiting to be released: &lt;i&gt;Snow Angels&lt;/i&gt;, which premiered at Sundance last year. In his coverage of the festival, Nerve&amp;#39;s Mike D&amp;#39;Angelo &lt;a href="http://www.nervepop.com/nerveblog/screengrabblog.aspx?id=107e9296"&gt;called this &amp;quot;Green’s most conventional work to date&amp;quot;&lt;/a&gt;, and one gets the same impression from the trailer, which plays up the dysfunctional relationship between ex-marrieds Sam Rockwell and Kate Beckinsale while only giving a few glimpses of the quirky &lt;i&gt;All the Real Girls&lt;/i&gt;-style courtship between teens Michael Angarano and Olivia Thirlby. Because of this, there were probably a dozen films competing for the final spot on this list, but in the end I had to go with a sentimental favorite, one that deserves much more love than it’s gotten so far. Richard Shepard&amp;#39;s darkly comic tale of three journalists (Richard Gere, Terrence Howard, Jesse Eisenberg) searching for a Bosnian warlord succeeds not so much because of its story as for its salty, unironic portrait of male friendship. As in Shepard’s last film &lt;i&gt;The Matador&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;The Hunting Party&lt;/i&gt; is a story about men drawn to violence who booze and bond in outposts far off the beaten path. At a time when &lt;i&gt;Brokeback Mountain&lt;/i&gt; is still a punchline, it takes real chutzpah to write a scene in which one man tells another, “that’s why I love you,” without going for a laugh. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;9. Time&lt;/b&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/VjIeytiGArA&amp;amp;rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" height="355" width="425"&gt;&lt;/object&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Korea’s prolific and controversial director Kim Ki-duk has become something of a whipping boy for the cinematic cognoscenti, but there’s no denying that the guy’s got skills. &lt;i&gt;Time&lt;/i&gt;, his best film to date, appears on the surface to be a response to Korea’s plastic-surgery craze, but at its heart it’s a story of amour fou, like &lt;i&gt;Seconds&lt;/i&gt; played for tragedy rather than thrills. In Kim’s hands, plastic surgery becomes a metaphor for how self-conscious we’ve become, so insecure in our skin that we’re no longer able to simply give ourselves over to others, not even those we love. Also, Kim’s gift for astonishing imagery is as keen as ever, especially in his use of a seaside sculpture park. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;8. I’m Not There&lt;/b&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

But each onscreen Dylan is only a pawn in the game of director Todd Haynes, a piece of the puzzle that has become the Dylan mythos. With his ingenious structure, Haynes highlights the contradictions, tall tales, and outright fabrications of Dylan’s legend, revealing him to be less a self-conscious chameleon reinventing his image for the public as a lifelong searcher who cared little whether we wanted to follow. The wonder is that &lt;i&gt;I&amp;#39;m Not There&lt;/i&gt; is so much fun- sometimes electrifying, sometimes goofy, but always fascinating. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;7. Offside&lt;/b&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

In Panahi’s eyes, the law isn’t so much an injustice as a colossal pain for all involved, and by highlighting the absurdity of the situation, &lt;i&gt;Offside&lt;/i&gt; becomes the stuff of high comedy. And a rousing crowd-pleaser to boot- Panahi shot much of the film in the bowels of the stadium during an actual World Cup qualifying match, and even at a distance from the field, the energy is palpable. In the end, football is a uniter, not a divider, and once the detained women escape their captors to mingle with their celebrating countrymen, they’re able to share in the victory that their laws had tried to deny them. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;6. Joshua&lt;/b&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

But George Ratliff’s &lt;i&gt;Joshua&lt;/i&gt; is another breed altogether- a genre movie in the abstract, but a particularly chilly and thematically-rich one. Moreover, Joshua is very much an of-the-moment bad seed, not some pint-sized supernatural boogeyman but the product of ineffectual and indulgent parenting. Jacob Kogan is creepy in the title role, but the real revelation is Sam Rockwell, giving the performance of the year as his father, a man whose parenting skills are limited at best, and who is ill-equipped to deal with a son whose behavior goes so sharply against his own. When he finally realizes what he’s up against it’s too late to stop it, and thanks to Ratliff and Rockwell, this realization hits with the power of a gut punch. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;5. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford&lt;/b&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

It could have been a disaster, but somehow it works beautifully, thanks not only to the beauty of the filmmaker but also the performances. Brad Pitt is fine as a Jesse James who is all too mindful of the larger-than-life figure he cut in the West, but the film belongs to Casey Affleck as Ford, the youngster whose boyish hero worship festered into violent obsession. Ford was foolish enough to believe that he could create his own legend, but all he did was to be swallowed up by Jesse’s, and because of Affleck’s performance this reviled figure becomes downright tragic. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;4. The Host&lt;/b&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

With a flair for showmanship and populist storytelling that nearly equal those of Spielberg in his Jaws days, director Bong Joon-ho has made a monster movie to stand alongside the greats in the genre. Part of the credit should go to the effects wizard who created the disgusting yet somehow lovable monster, but I dare say the movie wouldn’t work so well if not for the endearingly flawed family at the movie’s center. Even on a list this full of darkness and despair, there’s always a place for pure, unadulterated entertainment, and &lt;i&gt;The Host&lt;/i&gt; gave me more sheer moviegoing pleasure than any film of 2007. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;3. Gone Baby Gone&lt;/b&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/f99Ep0koG84&amp;amp;rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" height="355" width="425"&gt;&lt;/object&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Most of the praise for &lt;i&gt;Gone Baby Gone&lt;/i&gt; has centered on the film’s performances- especially the much-feted Amy Ryan- and the surprising amount of thematic resonance to be found in the film. But I think director Ben Affleck deserves a great deal more credit for how powerful this film is than he’s been getting. Most obviously, Affleck has a real feel for his setting- a working-class South Boston neighborhood- and the people who inhabit it. But while this location seems at first like backdrop to a mystery involving a kidnapped child, it eventually takes center stage in the story, which turns into an breathlessly compelling study in the consequences of tribalism. “Guys take pride in where they’re from, like it was something they did,” states protagonist Patrick Kenzie (Casey Affleck- again!) in the film’s opening voiceover. The tragedy is that Kenzie- thinks himself above it all- buys into this idea as much as anybody. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;2. No Country for Old Men&lt;/b&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

But while first two acts of the film are enough to mark it as the Coen brothers’ best work in years, it’s the final act, which avoids the expected confrontation between Chigurh and Lewellyn in favor of something more philosophical, that the film to another level of greatness altogether. An observer for most of the story, Sheriff Bell (Tommy Lee Jones) suddenly comes face to face with the idea that even if you run from the evil that you fear may be hiding behind one door, there’s no guarantee that it won’t be waiting for you behind another. “You can’t stop what’s coming,” indeed. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;1. It’s a serial-killer movie that practically never goes for cheap thrills, and a three-hour fact-based period piece that’s almost bereft of epic sweep. In short, it’s tough to put my finger on what exactly makes &lt;i&gt;Zodiac&lt;/i&gt; such a masterpiece. For me, the most awe-inspiring aspect of the film is its near-obsessive attention to detail, one that’s downright fanatical even by the standards of the true-crime genre. But using the thousands of tiny clues and incidental pieces of business that surrounded the Zodiac case, Fincher immerses us fully in the world of the case, one in which the crime-solving technology and interdepartmental procedures of the day were always several steps behind the schemes of the killer. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Also worth mentioning: Everything Will Be OK (sorry, no trailer)&lt;/b&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When I was making this list, I decided to restrict myself to feature-length films. However, taking into account all new movies I saw this past year, none hit me quite as hard as Don Hertzfeldt’s thrilling new animated short, &lt;i&gt;Everything Will Be OK&lt;/i&gt;. In little more than fifteen minutes, Hertzfeldt tells the story of a man who is doomed to die. His doctors give up on him, his mother moves in to help, and the man himself goes off the deep end. And then, without warning, he suddenly gets better, much to everyone&amp;#39;s annoyance. &lt;i&gt;Everything Will Be OK&lt;/i&gt; has the feel of an especially good Raymond Carver story, both in its sense of irony and its reliance on small but significant detail, but the twisted sense of humor and unique animation style is all Hertzfeldt.
