To begin with, there’s the always dependable “underdog” element, which director John G. Avildsen previously mined with his Oscar-winning film &lt;i&gt;Rocky&lt;/i&gt;. Then, of course, there was a sport that the hero had to learn in order to succeed- karate, of course, to capitalize on the burgeoning martial-arts craze. Finally, it was also a high-school movie- one which found&amp;nbsp;new kid&amp;nbsp;Daniel (Ralph Macchio), recently moved to California from New&amp;nbsp;Jersey,&amp;nbsp;forced to learn karate to fight off the bullies. With these three elements, it hardly mattered to&amp;nbsp;audiences&amp;nbsp;that the film was almost completely predictable. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Like its hero, &lt;i&gt;The Karate Kid&lt;/i&gt; was an underdog, with few studio executives expecting it to make much money. What they didn’t count on was the word-of-mouth and repeat business that followed its release. Much of the buzz was fueled by the film’s most popular character, the elderly maintenance man Mr. Miyagi who trains the film’s hero Daniel (Ralph Macchio) in martial arts. As played by longtime character actor Noriyuki “Pat” Morita- recognizable to viewers from his recurring role as &lt;i&gt;Happy Days&lt;/i&gt;’ Arnold- Mr. Miyagi’s cranky inscrutability and unorthodox training methods make him feel like a flesh-and-blood version of Yoda. With its comfortable formula and Morita’s scene-stealing (and Oscar-nominated) performance, &lt;i&gt;Karate Kid&lt;/i&gt; became the surprise hit of 1984, and beloved Miyagi-isms like “wax on, wax off” quickly entered the pop culture lexicon.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;What happened?:&lt;/b&gt; As is so often the case, Hollywood just couldn’t leave well enough alone. Flush with the film’s unexpected box-office success, Columbia Pictures promptly green-lit a second &lt;i&gt;Karate Kid&lt;/i&gt; adventure, one which took Daniel and Mr. Miyagi to the mentor’s childhood home on Okinawa. But while the second film actually managed to outgross the first, the well had run dry with the third installment, a pale retread of the original movie, which wasn’t that original to begin with. Then, after biding five more years, Columbia decided the public needed yet another &lt;i&gt;Karate Kid&lt;/i&gt;, but without Macchio involved the main character became a girl, played by future two-time Oscar-winner Hilary Swank. Add to this a short-lived Saturday morning &lt;i&gt;Karate Kid&lt;/i&gt; series, and you get the idea- the public just got &lt;i&gt;Karate Kid&lt;/i&gt;-ed out.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Does &lt;i&gt;The Karate Kid&lt;/i&gt; still work?:&lt;/b&gt; Not really. Now that the film’s heyday has passed, &lt;i&gt;Karate Kid&lt;/i&gt; looks hokier than ever. The formulas that made the movie a hit have been played out, and the film itself isn’t good enough to transcend them. It doesn’t help that the film (which runs a bloated 127 minutes) has a &lt;u&gt;lot&lt;/u&gt; of slow patches, which are largely found in the scenes that don’t involve Mr. Miyagi. Daniel’s relationship with “Ali-with-an-I” (future Oscar-nominee-turned-fertility-nurse Elisabeth Shue) starts promisingly, but quickly turns to a clichéd movie romance with a touch of a rich girl/poor boy dynamic, and the screenplay can’t be bothered to find a new wrinkle. No less formulaic is the pack of eeeeeeeeevil martial artists from the Cobra Kai dojo, where all of the best students are blonde preppies and the classes are run like a cross between boot camp and a meeting of the Hitler Youth. It should goes without saying that Daniel is a dark-haired, brown-eyed Italian-American boy.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Then there’s Avildsen’s direction, which is clumsy and hamfisted. In the eight years since &lt;i&gt;Rocky&lt;/i&gt;, he apparently forgot how to shoot action, since the fight scenes here generally move too quickly to tell most of what’s happening. Meanwhile, Avildsen intersperses plenty of sunsets, along with a number of cheesy montages, all of which are underscored with the most obvious music choices (I call it “&lt;i&gt;The Tao of Steve&lt;/i&gt; Syndrome”). A beach party is set to The Flirts and Jan &amp;amp; Dean’s “(Bop Bop) On the Beach”, a song called a song called “Young Hearts” underscores Macchio and Shue’s first date, and the final tournament is accompanied by Joe Esposito’s deathless dumb-as-dust (and sadly memorable) power ballad “You’re the Best.” All of these factors and more make &lt;i&gt;Rocky&lt;/i&gt; look like the model of subtlety and restraint by &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/daniel%20and%20miyagi.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/daniel%20and%20miyagi.jpg" align="right" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;comparison.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Yet when Mr. Miyagi is onscreen, the movie still works pretty well. Sure, the wise Asian mentor is an age-old stereotype, but Morita makes the character a lot of fun. Supposedly, the great Toshiro Mifune tested for the role, but while his intense presence would have overwhelmed the story, Morita is just stern enough, while leavening the character with a gentle wit that makes him pretty irresistible. It’s been a good twenty years since I last saw &lt;i&gt;The Karate Kid&lt;/i&gt;, and I was taken aback by how much of the film didn’t involve Mr. Miyagi. To honor the release of the home video set, That Guy!, the Screengrab&amp;#39;s sporadic celebration of B-listers, character actors, and the working famous, is devoting itself this week to the backup chorus of these remarkable films.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/09/23-End/taliashire.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/09/23-End/taliashire.jpg" align="right" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;b&gt;TALIA SHIRE:&lt;/b&gt; The world of the Corleones is one that shuts out its women. Their job is to produce and raise the children, and they are basically treated &lt;i&gt;as&lt;/i&gt; children, to remain innocent and untainted by knowledge of what their family&amp;#39;s prosperity is based on--as if they could &lt;i&gt;really&lt;/i&gt; not know, or as if there could be absolution in ignorance. The big exception is Michael&amp;#39;s sister Connie, played by Francis Ford Coppola&amp;#39;s sister, Talia Shire. (One advantage of this side of the casting is that Coppola instinctively understood how to get guys to act like brothers to a little sister. James Caan says that Coppola would engineer situations on the set, asking Caan to shoo away some bastard who was &amp;quot;bothering&amp;quot; Talia; it was only later that Caan realized that Coppola was psyching him up for the big scene where Caan&amp;#39;s Sonny, after seeing bruises on his sister&amp;#39;s face, performs a little marriage counseling by tracking down his brother-in-law and stomping a mudhole in his ass.) Maybe because he didn&amp;#39;t want to seem to be playing favorites, Coppola treated Shire&amp;#39;s character a little negligently in the first film; she doesn&amp;#39;t really threaten to rise above the level of a victim and a plot function until her big explosion at the end, screaming that Michael has had her husband killed. But in &lt;i&gt;Part II&lt;/i&gt;, she enters the movie like a house on fire, a fabulously turned out slightly-older woman who&amp;#39;s going to do whatever it takes to embarrass the family she blames for wrecking her life, even if that means she has to hang out with Troy Donahue. Eventually she wears herself out with her own acting out and returns to the nest, and by the time of &lt;i&gt;Part III&lt;/i&gt;, she&amp;#39;s  more active plotter than Michael. She has her ideas about how things ought to be done and takes full advantage of all the perks she figures she has coming to her as blood relation. And nobody is going to take her out in a rowboat and put one in her head while it&amp;#39;s bowed in prayer.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;i&gt;The Godfather&lt;/i&gt; is one of two big movie franchises that dominate Shire&amp;#39;s filmography. The other is the &lt;i&gt;Rocky&lt;/i&gt; series, where she played Adrian, the ugly duckling who became the hero&amp;#39;s loyal wife, hanging in there from the 1976 original through to &lt;i&gt;Rocky V&lt;/i&gt; in 1990. (Her absence from the 2006 &lt;i&gt;Rocky Balboa&lt;/i&gt; is explained by her character&amp;#39;s death from, in the tasteful words of her widower, &amp;quot;da woman cancer.&amp;quot;) Although she was perfectly charming in the first &lt;i&gt;Rocky&lt;/i&gt; movie, the role called for her to return to the likable-mouse range of the first &lt;i&gt;Godfather&lt;/i&gt; movie, and in invited audiences to like her for being so drably unimaginative and for being faithfully devoted to America&amp;#39;s Lug. The success of &lt;i&gt;Rocky&lt;/i&gt; did lead to her having, for a few months from 1979 to early 1980, a brief fling as a leading lady, but the movies she starred in--the uneven and off-putting &lt;i&gt;Old Boyfriends&lt;/i&gt; and the terrible horror pictures &lt;i&gt;Prophecy&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;Windows&lt;/i&gt; (which is the only film directed by &lt;i&gt;Godfather&lt;/i&gt; cinematographer Gordon Willis, and which cast Shire as the target of a dangerous lesbian stalker played Elizabeth Ashley)--were such bombs that they left Shire open to public ridicule. The whole experience may have let her a little gun-shy; for the next ten years or so, she didn&amp;#39;t stray far from Rocky&amp;#39;s apron strings, and though she has continued working pretty steadily in recent years, she seems to have a pretty good sense for picking scripts whose finished films will scarcely see the light of day. I suspect that Shire may still have some surprises in her, but it remains to be seen whether anyone will arrange for them to be turned loose.

SPRADLIN:&lt;/b&gt; A big believer in the value of a varied CV, the Oklahoma-born Spradlin was an attorney, an independent oil man, and a politician before turning professional actor in his mid-forties. He had already built up an impressive roll call of intimidating but not always trustworthy authority figures--cops, doctors, politicians, military officers--before Coppola brought him on board to play Senator Pat Geary, a man who the Senate doorkeeper can&amp;#39;t introduce with the words &amp;quot;the honorable...&amp;quot; without dissolving in giggles. Having earned his place in movie history, Spradlin continued to play admirals, sports coaches (including, in the 1979 &lt;i&gt;North Dallas Forty&lt;/i&gt;, a character said to be modeled on Tom Landry), and even, in his last job before his official retirement in 1999, Ben Bradlee in the cross-eyed Watergate spoof &lt;i&gt;Dick.&lt;/i&gt; All of these roles now seem informed by the fact that the man onscreen once set his nastiest sneer in place to go head to head with Michael Corleone, and that it took a bloody bed full of dead girl to make him blink, and shudder. Especially worthy of mention is his other job for Coppola, in &lt;i&gt;Apocalypse Now&lt;/i&gt;, where he plays the general who gives Martin Sheen his assignment up river, and where his sad, weary face--the face of a man who by God will do the job he signed on to do, but at the time he signed on he sure didn&amp;#39;t know he was going to be doing this shit--is like a red flag to the star, and maybe to the audience. Whatever happens next, you can&amp;#39;t look into those eyes and say that you weren&amp;#39;t given fair warning.

&lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/09/23-End/Reg.5587.12.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/09/23-End/Reg.5587.12.jpg" align="right" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;b&gt;LENNY MONTANA:&lt;/b&gt; Six feet six inches tall and not whisper-thin, Montana (nee&amp;#39; Lenny Passofaro) worked as a bouncer and is rumored to have had some kind of mob connections before he entered show business as a professional wrestler, where he worked under the names Lenny the Bull, Zebra Man, and Chief Chickawicki. Lenny was 45 when he made his movie debut in &lt;i&gt;The Godfather&lt;/i&gt; playing Luca Brasi, the old family enforcer who didn&amp;#39;t expect to be invited to his boss&amp;#39;s daughter&amp;#39;s wedding. If the scene in which Luca thanks Don Corleone for having been so honored had been played and shot as written, it might have been less memorable. As it turned out, Lenny the Bull was so starstruck by Marlon Brando that he couldn&amp;#39;t be in Brando&amp;#39;s presence for two seconds without looking as if he were going to shit his pants and maybe bleed from the eyes a little, so after all attempts to calm him down failed, Coppola reconceived the scene: in the finished product, Luca is so overwhelmed by the Don&amp;#39;s willingness to let him enter his home through the front door in broad daylight, and so unused to social interaction that doesn&amp;#39;t involve threatening to leave someone with fewer body parts than he had when he showered that morning, that he has laboriously prepared a written speech for the occasion, which he has trouble getting out even in the sealed labratory conditions of the Don&amp;#39;s office. In Lenny&amp;#39;s other big scene, he gets to have a drink with some fellows who pin his hand to the bar with a knife and then garrote him, and Lenny played it as if getting throttled with piano wire came much more naturally to him than wedding-day small talk. Given the massive international success of &lt;i&gt;The Godfather&lt;/i&gt; and Lenny&amp;#39;s easily recognizable face and physique, is it any wonder that his acting debut did lead to other offers? He appeared in James Toback&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;Fingers&lt;/i&gt;, a TV film starring Frank Sinatra called &lt;i&gt;Contract on Cherry Street&lt;/i&gt;, the Jackie Chan vehicle &lt;i&gt;The Big Brawl&lt;/i&gt;, the Steve Martin hit &lt;i&gt;The Jerk&lt;/i&gt;, and Robert Aldrich&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;...All the Marbles&lt;/i&gt;, as well as in such trivia as the Italian spoof &lt;i&gt;The Funny Face of the Godfather.&lt;/i&gt; He even took a co-writing credit on one of his last films, &lt;i&gt;Blood Song&lt;/i&gt;, a horror flick that co-starred Richard Jaeckel and Frankie Avalon. First Rocky did it, then Rambo.  Indiana Jones is about to do it, and even Dirty Harry is &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2008/03/20/under-the-hood-of-eastwood-s-gran-torino.aspx" target="_blank"&gt;rumored&lt;/a&gt; to be thinking about it.  So if all of these movie geezers can come out of retirement for one more adventure, why can’t the Bandit?  Of course I refer to Bo “Bandit” Darville, the iconic Burt Reynolds rogue who drove circles around Sheriff Buford T. Justice in the&lt;i&gt; Smokey and the Bandit &lt;/i&gt;movies.  While a big-screen re-launch of the franchise may currently exist only in the sickest corner of my diseased brain, Burt Reynolds has recently reunited with the black TransAm he made famous.  Sort of.

In &lt;i&gt;Celebrity Rides: Burt Builds a Bandit&lt;/i&gt;, a 5-part series that aired on something called the DIY Network but is now available on DVD, Reynolds teams with car restoration company YearOne to design and build a new custom version of the car using the original 1977-78 model.  Actually, saying Reynolds “teams” with the restoration group is a bit generous; he shows up at the shop a couple of times to reminisce and grunt a few suggestions, footage of which is scattered throughout the episodes to make him seem like a consistent presence.  In fact, there’s probably less than an hour of actual content in the whole two-and-a-half hour series; the footage is all chopped and shuffled and re-used over and over, following the time-honored TV dictum: tell people what they’re going to see, let them see it, and then tell them what they just saw.

Still, if you’re a know-nothing gearhead like me, it’s fun to see an old-school TransAm pulled out of a field, completely stripped down and rebuilt to modern specifications, even if replacing the CB radio with an Alpine navigation system does seem like sacrilege.  Clips from the original &lt;i&gt;Smokey&lt;/i&gt; are scattered throughout, and they mostly serve to highlight how shockingly frail Reynolds looks these days.  He’s making another big screen comeback attempt with &lt;i&gt;Deal&lt;/i&gt;, in theaters tomorrow, but it’s a safe bet that his years of going eastbound and down are long behind him, good buddy.

Those of us who had to live through it the first time remember it primarily as a time of bad metal, worse sitcoms, and waiting around to see what dumb-ass thing Ronald Reagan would say next, but to the generations that followed, it is a time for richly veined cultural nostalgia. From what we can recollect through the haze of drugs and alcohol that coat our memories of the decade, the hallmark of 1980s cinema was very loud explosions punctuated by the occasional car chase or wise-cracking black transvestite. It&amp;#39;s not something we thought anyone would be eager to repeat, and yet there have been, in recent memory, new installments of the &lt;i&gt;Die Hard&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;Rocky&lt;/i&gt; franchises; a new TV series based on &lt;i&gt;The Terminator&lt;/i&gt;; an upcoming &lt;i&gt;Indiana Jones &lt;/i&gt;picture; and, opening all across the country this Friday, a new &lt;i&gt;Rambo&lt;/i&gt; movie. Even the Screengrab is getting into the act, with Gabriel Mckee posting his &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2008/01/17/the-top-ten-action-heroes-who-deserve-a-comeback-part-1.aspx"&gt;top ten action heroes who deserve a comeback&lt;/a&gt;, many of whom hail from the &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2008/01/18/the-top-ten-action-heroes-who-deserve-a-comeback-part-2.aspx"&gt;Decade That Time Refuses To Forget&lt;/a&gt;. If you can&amp;#39;t beat &amp;#39;em, join &amp;#39;em: so says Take Five as we present a fistful of &amp;#39;80s action movies that we. . . well, we don&amp;#39;t &lt;i&gt;love&lt;/i&gt;, exactly, but we at least look back on with something less than severe brain trauma. &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/01/16-22/rocky3.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/01/16-22/rocky3.jpg" align="right" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;ROCKY III&lt;/i&gt; (1982)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Sure, the first movie had heart and soul. And the second movie had a ruthless determination to capitalize on the first movie&amp;#39;s heart and soul. But do you know what they didn&amp;#39;t have? Do you know what they lacked, which made the third installment unquestionably the best of all the &lt;i&gt;Rocky&lt;/i&gt; movies? That&amp;#39;s right: MR. T. They didn&amp;#39;t have Mr. T, and as such, they suffered, as do all artistic projects not involving Mr. T. Here&amp;#39;s a little secret they don&amp;#39;t teach you at film school: sure, &lt;i&gt;Citizen Kane&lt;/i&gt; might have been the greatest movie of all time — but it would have been even better if it had been able to feature Mr. T yelling at people. And &lt;i&gt;Rocky III&lt;/i&gt;, whatever its other faults — and it had hundreds, from its hamhanded TV-movie direction (by Sly himself) to its predictable storyline — at least gave us Mr. T yelling at people in abundance. When his Clubber Lang (a savage, media-loathing brute allegedly inspired by young George Foreman) wasn&amp;#39;t yelling at people, he was beating people up, and &lt;i&gt;Rocky III&lt;/i&gt; brings us the double pleasure of seeing Sylvester Stallone clobbered by Clubber &lt;i&gt;and&lt;/i&gt; Hulk Hogan as &amp;quot;Thunderlips&amp;quot;. Just turn it off halfway through.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA &lt;/i&gt;(1986)&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If it wasn&amp;#39;t the most exciting or accomplished action movie of the 1980s, it was at least probably the most enjoyable: &lt;i&gt;Big Trouble in Little China&lt;/i&gt; was brought to us by an uncharacteristically light-hearted John Carpenter, and worked both as a straight-up pseudo-mystical punch-&amp;#39;em-out and as a loopy parody of same. Carried largely on the back of Kurt Russell&amp;#39;s endearing performance as antihero &amp;quot;ol&amp;#39; Jack Burton&amp;quot;, a trucker who&amp;#39;s chock full of bogus wisdom delivered in a ridiculously over-the-top John Wayne accent. Part of the reason it plays so well as both sincere action and goofy action send-up is because the script was written by W.D. Richter, who originally conceived it as a sequel to his own &lt;i&gt;The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension&lt;/i&gt; from two years earlier. Legal and financial issues kept the sequel from being made, but &lt;i&gt;Big Trouble&lt;/i&gt; features some of its characteristic touches and clever bits of dialogue. It also features swell performances from a young Kim Cattrall and James Hong, everyone&amp;#39;s favorite inscrutable Asian. Besides, how can you not love a movie featuring a wizard named Egg Shen? &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;ACTION JACKSON&lt;/i&gt; (1988)&lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/01/16-22/actionjackson.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/01/16-22/actionjackson.jpg" align="left" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;Where is the love for Sgt. Jericho Jackson, we ask you? Where? This compelling saga of America&amp;#39;s forgotten black action hero was released in the same month as &lt;i&gt;Bloodsport&lt;/i&gt;, making 1988 — which also brought us &lt;i&gt;Die Hard, Above the Law, Red Heat&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;They Live&lt;/i&gt; — a banner year from cheesy guilty-pleasure action movies. This one had it all: a post-&lt;i&gt;Rocky&lt;/i&gt;, pre-&lt;i&gt;Arrested Development&lt;/i&gt; Carl Weathers playing a tough Detroit cop who was also an all-American track star &lt;i&gt;and&lt;/i&gt; a Harvard-educated attorney; former Prince plaything Vanity making hay while the sun shone as a sex kitten; Sharon Stone, doing the thing that she was best known for doing before everyone all of the sudden decided to take her seriously; and villains Craig T. Nelson and Robert Davi overacting like there was no tomorrow. (Which, for Robert Davi at least, there probably wasn&amp;#39;t.) &lt;i&gt;Action Jackson &lt;/i&gt;had everything you could have wanted out of a 1980s action flick: a wisecracking tough guy hero, naked dead chicks, tons of explosions, people dying in extremely creative ways, egregious use of narcotics, and a protagonist whose name rhymed! Come back, Carl Weathers, all is forgiven.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;BLOODSPORT &lt;/i&gt;(1988)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Before Jean-Claude Van Damme was a full-time crazy person, he was America&amp;#39;s next big martial arts star. &lt;i&gt;Bloodsport&amp;nbsp;&lt;/i&gt; was the movie that put the rubber-groined Belgian on the map, portraying real-life martial arts semi-star Frank Dux. The plot of &lt;i&gt;Bloodsport&lt;/i&gt; — well, it&amp;#39;s giving it a lot more credit than it deserves to even call it a plot, involving (as does every other martial arts movie ever made) a bunch of well-toned Asians out to kick each other in the face. It&amp;#39;s not much for memorable acting, either; Van Damme had already, in his first starring role, perfected the self-satisfied smirk that would carry him through the rest of his career, and while the movie does feature a young Forest Whitaker as a federal agent tasked to stand around looking exasperated, it also features Leah Ayres failing to become America&amp;#39;s sweetheart, Donald Gibb trying to make the transition from hooligan to lummox, and Bolo Yeung (the former Bruce Lee nemesis known as Yang Tse) putting in the kind of performance only a trunk full of steroids can deliver. But it does feature some stunning martial arts battles, which is really all you can hope for in a movie like this. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;ROAD HOUSE &lt;/i&gt;(1989)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In all the calls for a revival of action movie heroes like Rocky, Rambo, Ryan, and Indy, where are the legions of fans clamoring for a return of James Dalton? Patrick Swayze desperately needs something to do, people. Believe it or not, there was once a time when women would line up around the block to get a load of this chunk-headed &amp;#39;King of the Sleepers&amp;#39; with his shirt off, and nowhere was he more chunk-headed or shirtless than in this deleriously zany action flick about a Zen-influenced tough guy (&amp;quot;Pain don&amp;#39;t hurt&amp;quot;) who is hired, despite his small stature and philosophy degree from NYU, to act as the bouncer at an out-of-control bar. Directed by a former electrician named Rowdy and co-starring Kelly Lynch at the height of her blondeness, &lt;i&gt;Road House &lt;/i&gt;transcends its shortcomings by being so completely indifferent to its own craziness that it chugs along on its own energy with nary a look back. Ben Gazzara is the bad guy in this thing, clearly bombed out of his coconut, and it features the immortal line &amp;quot;I used to fuck guys like you in prison&amp;quot;. New sequels to &lt;em&gt;Rocky, Die Hard, &lt;/em&gt;and &lt;em&gt;Rambo &lt;/em&gt;have revived long-dead franchises, and the trend is continuing. &lt;em&gt;Indiana&lt;/em&gt;&lt;em&gt; Jones 4&lt;/em&gt; has started filming, and a fourth &lt;em&gt;Mad Max &lt;/em&gt;film would have wrapped by now had scheduling conflicts not led director George Miller to make &lt;em&gt;Happy Feet&lt;/em&gt; instead. Though it&amp;#39;s an easy trend to mock, it opens the door for other action heroes to be resurrected — here are some top candidates. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;10. Scott McCoy (Chuck Norris), &lt;em&gt;The Delta Force&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

Scott McCoy of the Delta Force. This elite antiterrorist strike force, led by Lee Marvin, consists of some thirty soldiers who are highly trained in standing around in the back of a cargo plane while Chuck Norris rides around on a motorcycle killing terrorists. &lt;em&gt;Delta Force&lt;/em&gt; came out in the pre-&lt;em&gt;Die Hard&lt;/em&gt; world, before we expected our action heroes to have pathos, depth or family troubles. There&amp;#39;s not much character to this character, but when it comes to straightforward ass-kicking, Norris is the undisputed master. Norris is ripe for a Stallone-style comeback, and in the and in the age of the War on Terror, a new entry in the &lt;em&gt;Delta Force&lt;/em&gt; saga is the perfect vehicle for his revival. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;9. Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy), &lt;em&gt;Beverly Hills Cop&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

A return to the role of Axel Foley, the detective/con man of &lt;em&gt;Beverly Hills Cop&lt;/em&gt;, might be the best way to ensure that &lt;em&gt;Norbit&lt;/em&gt; never happens again. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;8. Jack Carter (Michael Caine), &lt;em&gt;Get Carter&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

It&amp;#39;s easy to forget that he made his name playing jerks — first a heartless cad in &lt;em&gt;Alfie&lt;/em&gt;, then a brutal-but-suave thug in &lt;em&gt;Get Carter&lt;/em&gt;. This story of a London gangster who travels to Newcastle (Britain&amp;#39;s equivalent of South Jersey) to investigate his brother&amp;#39;s murder isn&amp;#39;t as flashy as more recent tales of the U.K. underworld. But Guy Ritchie and Jason Statham nevertheless owe everything to &lt;em&gt;Get Carter&lt;/em&gt;&amp;#39;s blueprint and Caine&amp;#39;s cynical performance. A return to the character of Carter would give Caine a chance to recapture both the grim violence and the effortless sexiness of one of his greatest roles. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;7. Jimmy &amp;quot;Popeye&amp;quot; Doyle (Gene Hackman), &lt;em&gt;The French Connection&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

More than just a tough guy, Doyle is a contemptible bully, and instead of an invincible supercop, his temper makes him a bit of a screw-up. Hackman is still more than capable of this kind of complexity (as proven by &lt;em&gt;The Royal Tenenbaums&lt;/em&gt;), and it would be thrilling to see what he could do with this character after thirty-five years. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;6. Foxy Brown (Pam Grier) &lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

Grier has had a slightly higher profile since Quentin Tarantino reintroduced audiences to her charms, but it&amp;#39;s been far too long since she&amp;#39;s kicked ass like she did in &lt;em&gt;Foxy giant DVD box sets; they tend to be padded with lots of half-baked featurettes, useless production stills, and other things you&amp;#39;d never pay money for if they weren&amp;#39;t all packaged together in a pretty box with a movie you really like. But United Artists just took it to the next level with its &lt;a href="http://www.unitedartists90.com/"&gt;90th Anniversary Prestige Collection&lt;/a&gt; — a massive 110-disc set that features ninety films from seven decades. Oprah just named it one of her &lt;a href="http://www2.oprah.com/presents/2007/holiday/gifts/gifts_oft_350_117.jhtml"&gt;Favorite Things&lt;/a&gt;, which means it will sell like hotcakes. $870 hotcakes to be exact. But let&amp;#39;s look at exactly which ninety movies are featured, shall we? &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;First off, the box set starts with the &amp;#39;40s, leaving out the opportunity to include earlier United Artist benchmarks like &lt;em&gt;Broken Blossoms&lt;/em&gt; (1919), &lt;em&gt;The Gold Rush&lt;/em&gt; (1925) and &lt;em&gt;Stagecoach&lt;/em&gt; (1939). &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The &amp;#39;40s/&amp;#39;50s selection, including &lt;em&gt;Marty&lt;/em&gt;,&lt;em&gt; Night of the Hunter&lt;/em&gt; and&lt;em&gt; Some Like It Hot&lt;/em&gt;, is fairly solid — although &lt;em&gt;Rebecca&lt;/em&gt; and &lt;em&gt;The African Queen&lt;/em&gt; are among the missing.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The &amp;#39;60s brings a bunch of Bond films and some second-tier Billy Wilder. Good picks: &lt;em&gt;The Apartment&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;In the Heat of the Night&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;Satyricon&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;The Good, The Bad and The Ugly&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;Midnight Cowboy&lt;/em&gt;. Questionable: &lt;em&gt;It&amp;#39;s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;The Thomas Crown Affair&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;The Battle of Britain&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;I Could Go On Singing&lt;/em&gt;. Notable omission: &lt;em&gt;The Graduate&lt;/em&gt;. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The &amp;#39;70s has some interesting stuff: &lt;em&gt;Rocky&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;Annie Hall&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;The Last Waltz&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;Carrie&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;Manhattan&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;Last Tango in Paris&lt;/em&gt; and &lt;em&gt;Lenny&lt;/em&gt; would make for a quality weekend of film-watching. But &lt;em&gt;The Pink Panther Strikes Again&lt;/em&gt;? &lt;em&gt;Equus&lt;/em&gt;? And how much James Bond do we really need? Missing in action: &lt;em&gt;Network&lt;/em&gt; and &lt;em&gt;Being There&lt;/em&gt;. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;By the &amp;#39;80s, things are getting a bit random. Enjoy a triple feature of &lt;em&gt;Heaven&amp;#39;s Gate&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;WarGames&lt;/em&gt; and &lt;em&gt;Child&amp;#39;s Play&lt;/em&gt;! Or alternately, &lt;em&gt;Baby Boom&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;Raging Bull&lt;/em&gt; and &lt;em&gt;Road House&lt;/em&gt;! Top it off with the most unnecessary Bond film of them all, the Timothy Dalton vehicle &lt;em&gt;The Living Daylights&lt;/em&gt;. No big omissions here, unless you want to count &lt;em&gt;I&amp;#39;m Gonna Git You Sucka&lt;/em&gt;. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Finally we reach the &amp;#39;90s-&amp;#39;00s, a short selection featuring &lt;em&gt;Bowling for Columbine&lt;/em&gt;, the little-seen &lt;em&gt;Pieces of April&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;The Birdcage&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;Hotel Rwanda&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;Leaving Las Vegas&lt;/em&gt;, and five others. What, no &lt;em&gt;Showgirls&lt;/em&gt;? &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Overall, the set feels like a stranger&amp;#39;s DVD collection: a few classics, a few childhood favorites, a few questionable selections they probably got for $5 at the drugstore. But it doesn&amp;#39;t feel like the collection of a movie buff, nor does it have any particular coherence beyond the name of the studio. If an alien landed on Earth and asked me how to quickly amass an American film collection, I might advise him to get this box set. However, if you live on this planet, you can probably find a better use for your $900. Joe Spinell is one of those. Born Joseph Spagnuolo in 1936, the burly Manhattanite changed his name to make things easy on the casting directors who called him all too infrequently, making him reliant on low-paying night jobs like driving a taxi or working the counter at a seedy liquor store. There was nothing calculated or contrived about his Spinell’s frequent portrayals of tough-guy New Yorkers; he grew up hard and worked for a decade with the Theater of the Forgotten, a troupe that performed exclusively for prison inmates. Spinell’s first big break came in 1972, when he was cast (based almost exclusively on his thuggish looks and his inimitable accent) in a very minor role in Francis Ford Coppola’s &lt;i&gt;The Godfather&lt;/i&gt;. Coppola liked him so much that he specifically expanded the role of Willie Cicci to give Spinell more screen time in the sequel. A few years later, Spinell landed one of his most memorable roles, playing opposite his good friend Sylvester Stallone in &lt;i&gt;Rocky&lt;/i&gt; as Tony Gazzo, the two-bit loan shark who employs Rocky Balboa as a legbreaker. Never a big star, even by the diminished standards of character actors, Spinell was a working actor his entire life, constantly struggling to support a large family by taking whatever roles came his way; while the gems in his catalog are broken up by a great deal of dross, when he was on screen in a good role, it was easy to see why talented directors like Coppola and Martin Scorsese took to him. He had a lazy, insouciant delivery that could turn on a dime into violent intensity, and he had a particular way of making even the simplest lines entirely his own. Towards the end of his career, Spinell was financing horror movies (exemplified by the grotesque but successful &lt;i&gt;Maniac&lt;/i&gt;) that he wrote and directed himself, and had the dubious honor of being John Wayne Gacy’s personal choice to play the serial killer in a movie. Unfortunately, we’d never have the opportunity to see how he’d do in the role, or where else his career might take him: Joe Spinell died in 1989 of a heart attack, not yet&amp;nbsp;fifty-two years old.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Where to see Joe Spinell at his best:&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;THE GODFATHER, PART II&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;b&gt; (1974)&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The minor character of Willie Cicci, Frankie Pentangeli’s bodyguard, was never meant&amp;nbsp;as anything more than a bit part. But Francis Ford Coppola liked Joe Spinell enough to expand the role into a Joe Valachi-type character in the sequel to &lt;i&gt;The Godfather&lt;/i&gt;, and Spinell paid him back by turning in a fantastic, scene-stealing performance. Cicci brings down the house at a Senate committee investigation into organized crime, explaining to the movie’s fuddled stand-in for Estes Kefauver that the Corleone family &amp;quot;had a lot of buttons.&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;TAXI DRIVER &lt;/i&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;b&gt;(1976)&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2007/11/01-07/joespinelltaxidriver.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2007/11/01-07/joespinelltaxidriver.jpg" align="right" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;Francis Ford Coppola wasn’t the only Italian-American director from New York who took a shine to the &lt;i&gt;louche&lt;/i&gt;, dangerous Spinell. Martin Scorsese also found his demeanor and delivery worth showcasing, and gave him a small but key role in his 1976 masterpiece of New York as a lower circle of Hell. Here, Spinell plays the dispatcher who makes the mistake of giving Travis Bickle a job driving a hack; suspecting (not unjustly) that Bickle has a bit of an attitude problem, he unfortunately gives him the job anyway. Probably because he’ll work Jewish holidays. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;i&gt;THE NINTH CONFIGURATION&lt;/i&gt; (1980)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Joe Spinell didn’t often have the chance to show off any comedic chops, but when it did, it could be devastatingly effective. In William Peter Blatty’s remarkable film about a military psychiatrist assigned to rehabilitate officers suspected of faking insanity, he plays the cleverly named Lt. Spinell, casting director to Jason Miller’s Lt. Reno, who is adapting Shakespeare’s plays for dogs. In one of the movie’s most memorable, and hilarious, scenes, Spinell offers deadpan, and devastating, opinions on Reno’s casting choices.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
