So, for example, last year we predicted &lt;em&gt;Prince Caspian&lt;/em&gt; would be a hit...but it cost more and took in less than &lt;em&gt;The Lion, The Witch &amp;amp; The Wardrobe&lt;/em&gt;, so it was ultimately considered a disappointment. Meanwhile, &lt;em&gt;Sex &amp;amp; The City&lt;/em&gt;, which...ahem...&lt;em&gt;some&lt;/em&gt; Screengrabbers thought would bomb took in about the same amount of money as &lt;em&gt;Caspian&lt;/em&gt; and was ultimately considered a hit because all the wimmenfolk liked it so much (and also because it didn’t cost a zillion dollars to produce, despite all the CGI required to bring the eerie Kim Cattrall character to life). &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And so, without further ado...our picks for &lt;strong&gt;THE TOP FIVE HITS OF SUMMER 2009! &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;5. UP (May 29)&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Y75d3Q07AlY&amp;amp;hl=en&amp;amp;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="560" height="340"&gt;&lt;/embed&gt;&lt;/object&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;u&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Paul:&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/u&gt; &lt;br /&gt;There were several strong possibilities for the #5 spot, but in the end I kept coming back to Pixar, who has managed to balance high-quality output with great box office better than just about anyone else in Hollywood. Consider that all but one of their summer releases has finished among that summer’s top five, and that the one that didn’t -- 2007’s &lt;em&gt;Ratatouille&lt;/em&gt;, probably the least kid-friendly Pixar production to date -- landed at #6. So yeah, they’re a pretty good bet, and this family-oriented film should continue their hot streak. The opening weekend for &lt;em&gt;Up&lt;/em&gt; could be tight, considering that it’s competing with the second weekend of &lt;em&gt;Night at the Museum 2&lt;/em&gt;, but it ought to prevail in the long run given the thin June slate and the expected strong reviews. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;u&gt;Andrew:&lt;/u&gt;&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;br /&gt;This one didn’t make my list because it&amp;#39;s got a &lt;em&gt;meh&lt;/em&gt; title, I can’t figure out what the movie’s supposed to be about, and I don’t sense a lot of &lt;em&gt;Up&lt;/em&gt; excitement in the ether...but then again, I thought &lt;em&gt;Wall-E&lt;/em&gt; would tank, too, so what the hell do I know? &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;u&gt;Scott:&lt;/u&gt;&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;br /&gt;The pundits are fretting that the new Pixar movie will turn off the kiddies because it’s about an &lt;i&gt;old person&lt;/i&gt;. (shudder)&amp;nbsp; How are they going to sell Old Guy action figures?&amp;nbsp; Well, I seem to recall these same pundits wringing their hands over the nearly-silent first half of &lt;em&gt;Wall-E&lt;/em&gt;, too, so I’m sticking with the assumption that Pixar knows what they’re doing. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;4. ANGELS &amp;amp; DEMONS (May 15) &lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

A big-budget, star-studded adaptation of a Dan Brown bestseller would seem to be a can’t-lose proposition, especially given the blockbuster grosses of &lt;em&gt;The Da Vinci Code&lt;/em&gt; in 2006. Yet so far, the buzz on this one has been surprisingly muted, perhaps because it’s hard to imagine too many people getting worked up over a follow-up to its ponderous predecessor. Nonetheless, expect advertising for this to ramp up over the next month, leading to a big opening weekend followed by strong grosses over Memorial Day, as people line up for this almost out of obligation. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;u&gt;Andrew:&lt;/u&gt;&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;br /&gt;Considering people keep going to see those fake Nicolas Cage &lt;em&gt;Da Vinci Code&lt;/em&gt; knock-offs, I expect there’s gonna be an audience for the genuine article. Our fearless – and quite possibly senseless – movie janitor is watching every movie on the IMDb Bottom 100 list.  Join us now for another installment of &lt;b&gt;Unwatchable&lt;/b&gt;.
&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
I’m a peaceable man by nature, and I know everyone has to make a living somehow, but I can’t help it: I really wish something bad would happen to everyone involved in making &lt;i&gt;Baby Geniuses&lt;/i&gt;.  I’m not talking about something life-threatening or even physically debilitating – I’m thinking more in terms of a flat tire, a tax audit or perhaps a visible soiling of pants at a high-profile public event.  Actually, that last item probably did happen to one or two of the stars of &lt;i&gt;Baby Geniuses&lt;/i&gt;, given that they were actually babies.  I suppose I can’t blame these tykes for their roles in the movie, so instead, let us hope their parents had the courtesy to pay for the inevitable psychiatric counseling these toddlers required.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt;
Baby Geniuses&lt;/i&gt; is, as you might have surmised, a talking baby movie.  At the time of its release in 1999, the &lt;i&gt;Look Who’s Talking&lt;/i&gt; series had run its course and America was once again hungering for verbose infants.  Apparently.  The premise here is that babies have universal knowledge up until the age of two – they have all the wisdom of the universe, but it vanishes once they begin learning to talk.  Baby scientist Dr. Elena Kinder (Kathleen Turner, speaking her unspeakable dialogue in the thick Transylvanian accent she inexplicably developed in the early ’90s) and her colleague Dr. Heep (Christopher Lloyd) believe that babies under the age of two are communicating with each other in a secret language, and they plan to crack the code.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
One of the test subjects at their facility, wisecracking toddler Sly, manages to escape.  He is pursued into a shopping mall, where he inadvertently switches places with Whit, the twin brother he never knew he had.  Whit had previously been adopted by kindly couple Robin and Dan (Kim Cattrall and Peter MacNichol); now he is in the clutches of Dr. Kinder and Sly is living with Whit’s unsuspecting parents.  When Kinder figures out what has happened, she sends her minions out to retrieve Sly, and the final third of &lt;i&gt;Baby Geniuses&lt;/i&gt; transforms into a tired retread of &lt;i&gt;Home Alone&lt;/i&gt;, complete with plenty of groin injury humor.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
I don’t think this is too much to ask: if you’re going to make babies talk, give them something funny to say.  Austin Powers quotes don’t count.  Salacious innuendo is probably not a great idea.  When one boy baby asks a girl baby to take her clothes off and the girl baby responds, “You could at least buy me dinner first”…that makes me a little queasy.  Also, while the “trying on funny outfits” montage is, of course, always hilarious, it looks like the baby is being manipulated by marionette wires when he does the John Travolta moves in the little white suit.  I’m pretty sure this is illegal.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
As I said, I don’t actually wish death on any of these people – not even Dom DeLuise, who performs a repulsive tongue-wiggling maneuver that cost me several hours of sleep last night – but as it happens, the director, Bob Clark, was killed in a car accident in 2007.  Mr. Clark will always be fondly remembered for &lt;i&gt;A Christmas Story&lt;/i&gt;, and no doubt many males of a certain age retain some affection for &lt;i&gt;Porky’s&lt;/i&gt;, so it gives me no pleasure to report that the director’s final credit was &lt;i&gt;SuperBabies: Baby Geniuses 2&lt;/i&gt;.  It gives me even less pleasure to contemplate the likelihood that said sequel is lurking in wait, higher up the list of…the &lt;i&gt;Unwatchable&lt;/i&gt;.

To begin with, it was based on Tom Wolfe’s first fiction book, which had been widely read in serialized form in &lt;i&gt;Rolling Stone&lt;/i&gt; before becoming a bestseller upon its publication as a novel. The director was Brian De Palma, who made his reputation with a series of kinky, Hitchcock-inspired thrillers during the seventies before branching out into more mainstream fare such as &lt;i&gt;Scarface&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;The Untouchables&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;Casualties of War&lt;/i&gt;. With a wildly popular novel and an A-list director, Warner Bros. had visions of Oscars dancing in their heads, and they consequently filled the cast with big names, from recent Oscar nominees Tom Hanks, Melanie Griffith, and Morgan Freeman to newly anointed action superstar Bruce Willis, and backed them with plenty of first-rate character actors.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ideally, &lt;i&gt;The Bonfire of the Vanities&lt;/i&gt; should have been one of the biggest movie events of 1990. But then, if it had been, I would be writing about it in my Yesterday’s Hits column instead of When Good Directors Go Bad. As it stands, the big-screen adaptation remains one of the most notorious fiascos in Hollywood history, earning back a mere $15 million of its then-extravagant $50 million budget, and receiving mostly savage reviews. As a De Palma fan of long standing- I’m the guy who liked &lt;i&gt;The Black Dahlia&lt;/i&gt;, after all- I’d like to say that the film was merely misunderstood, but even I have to admit that it’s a failure.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Part of the problem is the casting of the principal roles, from the top on down. If you were casting the role of an ambitious commodities trader and self-anointed “Master of the Universe”, whose name would come to mind? Michael Douglas? Tom Cruise, perhaps? But after Warner Bros. deemed the character too unsympathetic on the page, they decided to cast Tom Hanks in the role, which is sort of like casting Jimmy Stewart as Gordon Gekko. Also problematic was the casting of Willis. The character of journalist Peter Fallow was written as a dissolute Brit (the role was originally offered to John Cleese), but Willis ended up being cast for marquee value, and gave one of his laziest performances, smirking his way through the role and pissing off most of the people involved with the production with his ego.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Worst of all is Griffith. During the eighties, Griffith’s dumb-blonde persona proved to be surprisingly adaptable to a number of filmmakers’ visions, from the tart-with-a-heart of Jonathan Demme’s &lt;i&gt;Something Wild&lt;/i&gt; to the streetwise porn star of De Palma’s own &lt;i&gt;Body Double&lt;/i&gt;. However, the role of Maria Ruskin was far beyond her limited talent. On the page, Maria may be the trickiest character in the novel, a wily manipulator whose ditzy façade hides a pitch-black heart. But Griffith can only manage the ditzy part, so when the character begins to reveal her shameless nature after Sherman’s life begins to go down the tubes we never believe it. The two halves of her personality- sexy and cunning- never mesh convincingly, so rather than lacing her manipulations with an erotic charge, her dark side makes the sexy stuff creepy, which surely wasn’t what the film was aiming for.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But while the casting issues might have been out of De Palma’s hands, he’s far from blameless. Admittedly, Wolfe’s novel is something of a tough nut to crack, &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/Bonfire.jpg"&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/brian_de_palma.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/brian_de_palma.jpg" align="right" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;simultaneously a cross-section of New York City life, a morality tale, and a savage takedown of the craven greed and ambition that fueled the eighties. However, it fails on all three counts. Much of its power as a snapshot of the Big Apple’s social strata is lost because its characters are sketchy and one-dimensional, a problem that might have been partially alleviated by spot-on casting, but not entirely. Likewise, the film places its morality tale aspects on the back burner for most of its running time, only to have judge/voice of reason Morgan Freeman bust out an extended monologue about decency in the film’s final five minutes, at which point it comes off as a tacked-on moral rather than a natural outgrowth of the story.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This leaves only the exposé aspect of the story. In nearly 700 pages, Wolfe was able to lay bare the motivations of nearly all of the major players in the story, from Sherman, Maria and Peter, to the lawyers, politicians and community leaders who opportunistically seized upon his case for their own personal gain. Without the time to do this onscreen, De Palma instead focuses on the circus (political and media-driven) that ensues. But while a more assured comic filmmaker might have been able to spin even an abbreviated &lt;i&gt;Bonfire&lt;/i&gt; into a bitter little pill (imagine what an &lt;i&gt;Ace in the Hole&lt;/i&gt;-era Billy Wilder might have done with this material), De Palma brings almost nothing to the material aside from the liberal use of unflattering wide-angle close-ups to underline the grotesqueness of the characters. Sure, there are a handful of cool camera tricks- especially the&amp;nbsp;nearly five-minute-long opening Steadican shot-&amp;nbsp;but for the most part they don’t really work in the context of the story, and mostly just call attention to themselves. I hate to use a criticism that De Palma’s detractors are wont to levy at him, but in this case, they’re right.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the end, the biggest failing of &lt;i&gt;The Bonfire of the Vanities&lt;/i&gt; is one of tone. The scathing satire of the original novel was replaced by a more hamfisted style that was both broad and shrill. A few of the jabs hit (I love how Andre Gregory’s poet is introduced: “he’s on the shortlist for the Nobel Prize. He has AIDS.”), but most of the time they whiff. Scenes like the one where Maria’s cuckold husband (Alan King) suddenly dies in mid-conversation or the famous “crumbs” monologue by Sherman’s wife might have worked on the page, but they flounder and die onscreen, the former because it’s not inherently funny to see a minor character kick the bucket, the latter because &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/Bonfire.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/Bonfire.jpg" align="right" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;Kim Cattrall plays the character as such a high-strung harpy that it’s hard to focus on anything she says.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now, it’s entirely possible that Ebert was right when he wrote that &lt;i&gt;The Bonfire of the Vanities&lt;/i&gt; might be enjoyable to those who are unfamiliar with the book. But I wouldn’t bet on it. De Palma and the studio took a powerful and lacerating story and adapted it in the most pedestrian way possible, and replaced the prickly citizens of Wolfe’s New York City with characters who are both cartoonish and, worse, uninteresting. If anything good came out of my watching &lt;i&gt;Bonfire&lt;/i&gt; again, it’s that I’ve been inspired to re-read the book, to immerse myself in Wolfe’s language and marvel at the world he created. Those of us who had to live through it the first time remember it primarily as a time of bad metal, worse sitcoms, and waiting around to see what dumb-ass thing Ronald Reagan would say next, but to the generations that followed, it is a time for richly veined cultural nostalgia. From what we can recollect through the haze of drugs and alcohol that coat our memories of the decade, the hallmark of 1980s cinema was very loud explosions punctuated by the occasional car chase or wise-cracking black transvestite. It&amp;#39;s not something we thought anyone would be eager to repeat, and yet there have been, in recent memory, new installments of the &lt;i&gt;Die Hard&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;Rocky&lt;/i&gt; franchises; a new TV series based on &lt;i&gt;The Terminator&lt;/i&gt;; an upcoming &lt;i&gt;Indiana Jones &lt;/i&gt;picture; and, opening all across the country this Friday, a new &lt;i&gt;Rambo&lt;/i&gt; movie. Even the Screengrab is getting into the act, with Gabriel Mckee posting his &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2008/01/17/the-top-ten-action-heroes-who-deserve-a-comeback-part-1.aspx"&gt;top ten action heroes who deserve a comeback&lt;/a&gt;, many of whom hail from the &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2008/01/18/the-top-ten-action-heroes-who-deserve-a-comeback-part-2.aspx"&gt;Decade That Time Refuses To Forget&lt;/a&gt;. If you can&amp;#39;t beat &amp;#39;em, join &amp;#39;em: so says Take Five as we present a fistful of &amp;#39;80s action movies that we. . . well, we don&amp;#39;t &lt;i&gt;love&lt;/i&gt;, exactly, but we at least look back on with something less than severe brain trauma. &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/01/16-22/rocky3.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/01/16-22/rocky3.jpg" align="right" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;ROCKY III&lt;/i&gt; (1982)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Sure, the first movie had heart and soul. And the second movie had a ruthless determination to capitalize on the first movie&amp;#39;s heart and soul. But do you know what they didn&amp;#39;t have? Do you know what they lacked, which made the third installment unquestionably the best of all the &lt;i&gt;Rocky&lt;/i&gt; movies? That&amp;#39;s right: MR. T. They didn&amp;#39;t have Mr. T, and as such, they suffered, as do all artistic projects not involving Mr. T. Here&amp;#39;s a little secret they don&amp;#39;t teach you at film school: sure, &lt;i&gt;Citizen Kane&lt;/i&gt; might have been the greatest movie of all time — but it would have been even better if it had been able to feature Mr. T yelling at people. And &lt;i&gt;Rocky III&lt;/i&gt;, whatever its other faults — and it had hundreds, from its hamhanded TV-movie direction (by Sly himself) to its predictable storyline — at least gave us Mr. T yelling at people in abundance. When his Clubber Lang (a savage, media-loathing brute allegedly inspired by young George Foreman) wasn&amp;#39;t yelling at people, he was beating people up, and &lt;i&gt;Rocky III&lt;/i&gt; brings us the double pleasure of seeing Sylvester Stallone clobbered by Clubber &lt;i&gt;and&lt;/i&gt; Hulk Hogan as &amp;quot;Thunderlips&amp;quot;. Just turn it off halfway through.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA &lt;/i&gt;(1986)&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If it wasn&amp;#39;t the most exciting or accomplished action movie of the 1980s, it was at least probably the most enjoyable: &lt;i&gt;Big Trouble in Little China&lt;/i&gt; was brought to us by an uncharacteristically light-hearted John Carpenter, and worked both as a straight-up pseudo-mystical punch-&amp;#39;em-out and as a loopy parody of same. Carried largely on the back of Kurt Russell&amp;#39;s endearing performance as antihero &amp;quot;ol&amp;#39; Jack Burton&amp;quot;, a trucker who&amp;#39;s chock full of bogus wisdom delivered in a ridiculously over-the-top John Wayne accent. Part of the reason it plays so well as both sincere action and goofy action send-up is because the script was written by W.D. Richter, who originally conceived it as a sequel to his own &lt;i&gt;The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension&lt;/i&gt; from two years earlier. Legal and financial issues kept the sequel from being made, but &lt;i&gt;Big Trouble&lt;/i&gt; features some of its characteristic touches and clever bits of dialogue. It also features swell performances from a young Kim Cattrall and James Hong, everyone&amp;#39;s favorite inscrutable Asian. Besides, how can you not love a movie featuring a wizard named Egg Shen? &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;ACTION JACKSON&lt;/i&gt; (1988)&lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/01/16-22/actionjackson.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/01/16-22/actionjackson.jpg" align="left" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;Where is the love for Sgt. Jericho Jackson, we ask you? Where? This compelling saga of America&amp;#39;s forgotten black action hero was released in the same month as &lt;i&gt;Bloodsport&lt;/i&gt;, making 1988 — which also brought us &lt;i&gt;Die Hard, Above the Law, Red Heat&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;They Live&lt;/i&gt; — a banner year from cheesy guilty-pleasure action movies. This one had it all: a post-&lt;i&gt;Rocky&lt;/i&gt;, pre-&lt;i&gt;Arrested Development&lt;/i&gt; Carl Weathers playing a tough Detroit cop who was also an all-American track star &lt;i&gt;and&lt;/i&gt; a Harvard-educated attorney; former Prince plaything Vanity making hay while the sun shone as a sex kitten; Sharon Stone, doing the thing that she was best known for doing before everyone all of the sudden decided to take her seriously; and villains Craig T. Nelson and Robert Davi overacting like there was no tomorrow. (Which, for Robert Davi at least, there probably wasn&amp;#39;t.) &lt;i&gt;Action Jackson &lt;/i&gt;had everything you could have wanted out of a 1980s action flick: a wisecracking tough guy hero, naked dead chicks, tons of explosions, people dying in extremely creative ways, egregious use of narcotics, and a protagonist whose name rhymed! Come back, Carl Weathers, all is forgiven.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;BLOODSPORT &lt;/i&gt;(1988)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Before Jean-Claude Van Damme was a full-time crazy person, he was America&amp;#39;s next big martial arts star. &lt;i&gt;Bloodsport&amp;nbsp;&lt;/i&gt; was the movie that put the rubber-groined Belgian on the map, portraying real-life martial arts semi-star Frank Dux. The plot of &lt;i&gt;Bloodsport&lt;/i&gt; — well, it&amp;#39;s giving it a lot more credit than it deserves to even call it a plot, involving (as does every other martial arts movie ever made) a bunch of well-toned Asians out to kick each other in the face. It&amp;#39;s not much for memorable acting, either; Van Damme had already, in his first starring role, perfected the self-satisfied smirk that would carry him through the rest of his career, and while the movie does feature a young Forest Whitaker as a federal agent tasked to stand around looking exasperated, it also features Leah Ayres failing to become America&amp;#39;s sweetheart, Donald Gibb trying to make the transition from hooligan to lummox, and Bolo Yeung (the former Bruce Lee nemesis known as Yang Tse) putting in the kind of performance only a trunk full of steroids can deliver. But it does feature some stunning martial arts battles, which is really all you can hope for in a movie like this. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;ROAD HOUSE &lt;/i&gt;(1989)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In all the calls for a revival of action movie heroes like Rocky, Rambo, Ryan, and Indy, where are the legions of fans clamoring for a return of James Dalton? Patrick Swayze desperately needs something to do, people. Believe it or not, there was once a time when women would line up around the block to get a load of this chunk-headed &amp;#39;King of the Sleepers&amp;#39; with his shirt off, and nowhere was he more chunk-headed or shirtless than in this deleriously zany action flick about a Zen-influenced tough guy (&amp;quot;Pain don&amp;#39;t hurt&amp;quot;) who is hired, despite his small stature and philosophy degree from NYU, to act as the bouncer at an out-of-control bar. Directed by a former electrician named Rowdy and co-starring Kelly Lynch at the height of her blondeness, &lt;i&gt;Road House &lt;/i&gt;transcends its shortcomings by being so completely indifferent to its own craziness that it chugs along on its own energy with nary a look back.
