&lt;embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/gaEGK1bbxCQ&amp;amp;hl=en&amp;amp;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="344"&gt;&lt;/embed&gt;&lt;/object&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The funny thing about &lt;em&gt;Dead Man Walking&lt;/em&gt; (and, admittedly, “funny” doesn’t come up a lot in discussions of Tim Robbins’ excellent but grim&amp;nbsp;1995 adaptation of the memoir by Sister Helen Prejean) is the way its tale of a nun (Susan Sarandon) driven to become an activist against capital punishment in the wake of her experiences with death row inmates (embodied by Sean Penn’s fictional composite, Matthew Poncelet) did nothing to change my own views on capital punishment at the time. In the film, Sarandon (as Prejean) is contacted by Poncelet, a convict facing execution who swears he was only an innocent bystander to the crimes he’s been charged with and needs help with his final appeal. Yet for all her Christian charity, it’s hard for Prejean not to see Poncelet for what he truly is: an arrogant, ignorant, self-pitying racist thug...not to mention, as it eventually turns out, a rapist and cold-blooded killer. When his appeal is denied and Poncelet eventually gets lethally injected for his senseless, brutal crimes, I remember my thought at the time was...&lt;em&gt;good&lt;/em&gt;. True, with death staring him in the face (and after weeks of selfless work by Sister Prejean), Poncelet finally starts acting like a human being and feels bad for his evil behavior, but...so what?&amp;nbsp; Without the catalyst of his own looming execution, it’s doubtful Poncelet would have shown any remorse at all, and his jailhouse conversion is too little too late: the victims are dead and even a last-minute call from the governor would only upgrade Poncelet’s remaining time on Earth to life in prison (while offering no closure for the victim’s families). Recounting my initial reactions, I realize I’ve mellowed a bit since 1995: given the inequities of the American legal system, I’ve come around to a generally anti-capital punishment perspective (except in extreme cases involving no-doubt-about-it Hall-Of-Fame assholes like Timothy McVeigh and...well, I&amp;#39;ll get back to you on Cheney). But it’s a tribute to Sarandon, Penn, Prejean and Robbins (not usually known for his subtlety in political matters)&amp;nbsp;that &lt;em&gt;Dead Man Walking&lt;/em&gt; is even-handed enough to credibly illustrate both sides of a difficult issue without preaching exclusively to any particular choir. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;BRUTE FORCE (1947) &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

But master noir director Jules Dassin was never one to do things the easy or predictable way, so he set &lt;em&gt;Brute Force&lt;/em&gt;&amp;nbsp;-- one of the most memorable, intense, and violent post-war crime dramas&amp;nbsp;-- inside the walls of the big house. Crammed with character actors who had worked with Dassin in the theater (and who, like him, would soon be victims of the anticommunist blacklist), &lt;em&gt;Brute Force&lt;/em&gt; is also noteworthy for making a star out of Burt Lancaster, in only his second film after &lt;em&gt;The Killers&lt;/em&gt;. Lancaster plays a nihilistic con who stages a prison riot, putatively to escape, admittedly to get out from under the thumb of a brutal yard boss, but really just to feel alive in a prison that feels to him like a living death. Hume Cronyn, as the prison guard, is likewise locked in a power struggle with a reformist administrator, and the three-way clash sets up a denoument that is as brutal as it is surprisingly human. Unsurprisingly, the director and his&amp;nbsp;actors find a way to cast the whole thing in a political light until its doomed finale. It’s a powerhouse film with gorgeous William Daniels photography that deserves to be counted with Dassin’s best. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;SULLIVAN&amp;#39;S TRAVELS (1941)&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

Sullivan has his heart in the right place. He wants to make an epic about how tough it is for the little guy. He can see it all already. It will be called &lt;em&gt;O Brother, Where Art Thou?&lt;/em&gt;, and it will tell the truth in a way that movies so rarely do. His producers, however, would prefer that he make another comedy, because let&amp;#39;s face it, those make lots of money for everyone. All Preston Sturges comedies come with a swift punch to the gut, a remedy highly recommended for all moviegoers on occasion. We can be a lazy bunch when we’re not watching out for that fast right. When Sullivan finally gives up on his dream of living like a hobo, the movie spins on a dime and hard times catch up with him faster than he expected. He learns the hard way how tough it is to be the little guy. He winds up with a sentence of six years of hard labor in a Southern prison camp, a brutal and bitter place in which even Cool Hand Luke would work to avoid any failures to communicate with his captors. The scene&amp;nbsp;in the clip above&amp;nbsp;is from that sequence, where Sullivan figures out what charity really is and what people really want from the movies. Fat lot of good it’ll do him, though, unless he figures out how to get sprung from jail. Luckily for him, despite all his boneheaded doofery, Sullivan is a clever guy. At least, he&amp;#39;s written by a very clever guy, that Preston Sturges. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;THIEVES LIKE US (1974)&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a class="" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oAwgsXKfYGE"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2009/01/thieves.jpg" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;Thieves Like Us&lt;/em&gt; isn&amp;#39;t a prison movie&amp;nbsp;-- it&amp;#39;s about criminals trying to stay &lt;em&gt;out&lt;/em&gt; of jail&amp;nbsp;-- but it does have one of the all-time great prison escape sequences. With Chicamaw (John Schuck) in the pen once more, it&amp;#39;s up to Bowie (Keith Carradine!) to break him out. Bowie drives straight into the prison: it&amp;#39;s the South in the 1930s, and with rampant inequality everywhere (&lt;em&gt;Thieves Like Us&lt;/em&gt; presses way less heavily on this point than &lt;em&gt;Bonnie And Clyde&lt;/em&gt;, which is all to the good), the warden is sitting down mid-day to a sweat-inducing fried chicken feast. The rail-thin Bowie has no trouble outfoxing and tying him up. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;ESCAPE FROM ALCATRAZ (1979) &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

The best parts aren&amp;#39;t the methodical depictions of how Eastwood breaks out of the unbreakable,&amp;nbsp;but his laconic assertions of selfhood. If you haven&amp;#39;t seen &lt;em&gt;Gran Torino&lt;/em&gt; yet (and you should!) and wonder how Clint Eastwood being racist sounds, watch the (possibly NSFW) clip above. What &lt;em&gt;Escape From Alcatraz&lt;/em&gt; doesn&amp;#39;t do is offer hardly any social context; it&amp;#39;s just Clint versus the world, and it happens, almost incidentally, to be set in a jail. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION (1994)&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/vG8waVVl5SY&amp;amp;hl=en&amp;amp;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="480" height="295"&gt;&lt;/embed&gt;&lt;/object&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Depending on when you check the IMDB, &lt;em&gt;The Shawshank Redemption&lt;/em&gt; is either the first or second greatest movie of all time as elected by we, the people. (It duels back and forth with &lt;em&gt;The Godfather&lt;/em&gt;.) How this came to pass is one of those mysteries that will never be answered. No one really expects IMDB users to be our most reliable cultural curators (see the #5 greatest film of all time: &lt;em&gt;The Dark Knight&lt;/em&gt;), but one of those things that drives my cinematic acquaintances nuts is trying to figure out how a movie that performed only moderately on initial release has managed to somehow assume top rank in many people&amp;#39;s hearts. The movie&amp;#39;s fine&amp;nbsp;-- it&amp;#39;s nice and slow, bolstered by patience, a generous dose of well-judged sap and a rare non-smarmy turn from Tim Robbins&amp;nbsp;-- but it cribs egregiously from basically every prison movie ever made without offering a whole lot back. Still, the people have spoken: it&amp;#39;s the greatest film of all time, hence easily the greatest prison film of all time. Hollywood private investigator Anthony Pellicano has been found guilty &lt;a href="http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-pellicano16-2008may16,0,3201102,full.story"&gt;of 77 out of 78 charges&lt;/a&gt; including racketeering, racketeering conspiracy, wire fraud, and identity theft. (He was acquitted of a single count of unauthorized computer access. He still has a racketeering-related charge yet to be decided.) The case attracted much in show business circle because of the high-profile nature of some of Pellicano&amp;#39;s clients, and also some of his victims. Among those who hired him included Brad Grey of Paramount Pictures and Michael Ovitz. Pellicano&amp;#39;s downfall began with Ovitz hired him to &amp;quot;handle&amp;quot; a reporter named Anita Busch, who contacted the FBI after she &amp;quot;walked out to her Audi outside her home to find a dead fish under a pan, a hole in the windshield, and a note saying &amp;#39;STOP.&amp;#39;&amp;quot; Pellicano also placed taps on Busch&amp;#39;s phone, as well as on the telephones of Sylvester Stallone and Keith Carradine (the last at the behest of Carradine&amp;#39;s ex-wife, who Pellicano was dating) and conducted a smear campaign against Garry Shandling in response to Shandling filing suit against his own former agent. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Prosecutor Daniel Sanders told the jury that &amp;quot;This case is not about Hollywood&amp;quot;, and as Carla Hall notes in the &lt;i&gt;Los Angeles Times&lt;/i&gt;, the government did its best to see to it that it wouldn&amp;#39;t be about Hollywood by not charging or investigating Pellicano&amp;#39;s rich, powerful employers, whose knowledge of just what he was up to remains shrouded in mystery. A few notables, such as &lt;i&gt;Die Hard&lt;/i&gt; (and, more recently, &lt;i&gt;Basic&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;The 13th Warrior&lt;/i&gt;) director John McTiernan, who thought it would be at least as good idea to lie to feds about the case as it was to remake &lt;i&gt;Rollerball&lt;/i&gt;, were scooped up and convicted of charges related to Pellicano months ago, but most of the big names dragged into the case managed to steer clear of legal involvement. Charged alongside Pellicano were his associates and co-defendents Mark Arneson, a former member of the LAPD; retired telephone company field technician Ray Turner; computer expert Kevin Kachikian; and a former Las Vegas businessman, Abner Nicherie. Our fearless – and quite possibly senseless – movie janitor is watching every movie on the IMDb Bottom 100 list.  Join us now for another installment of &lt;b&gt;Unwatchable&lt;/b&gt;.
&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
As was the case with &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2008/04/28/unwatchable-100-devil-fish.aspx" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;i&gt;Devil Fish&lt;/i&gt;,&lt;/a&gt; this low-budget 1976 tale of reptilian horror has made its way onto the Bottom 100 list courtesy of its appearance on &lt;i&gt;Mystery Science Theater 3000&lt;/i&gt;.  I suspected this would become a recurring problem, and that appears to be the case.  (I’m not 100% certain only because I’m not peeking too far ahead on the master list.  You see, I view the Unwatchable series as a major league baseball team views its season.  It’s a marathon, not a sprint.  You’ve got to take it one game at a time, lest ye be overwhelmed by the insurmountable odds of achieving your goal.  In this case, my odds are roughly equivalent to those of the Washington Nationals.)
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
I find the &lt;i&gt;MST3K &lt;/i&gt;situation problematic for several reasons.  In a strange way, the presence of movies that have been eviscerated on that show taints the purity of the Bottom 100 list.  If you voted for &lt;i&gt;Devil Fish&lt;/i&gt; or &lt;i&gt;Track of the Moon Beast&lt;/i&gt; because you happened to see them at the drive-in or on late night television, fine.  But I’m betting most people who voted for them did so because the &lt;i&gt;MST3K &lt;/i&gt;crew pre-approved them as bad movies.  Who among us can say we have seen &lt;i&gt;Track of the Moon Beast &lt;/i&gt;as it was meant to be seen, without robots cracking wise in the foreground?  Not me.  But in the future, I will do my best to obtain and view non-&lt;i&gt;MST3K&lt;/i&gt; versions of the movies on the list.  That is my Unwatchable vow.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
The second problem is, of course, that all the jokes to be made about &lt;i&gt;Track of the Moon Beast &lt;/i&gt;have already been made.  You might think there’s an unlimited amount of humor to be derived from the story of a man who gets a shard of meteorite imbedded in his skull which causes him to turn into a giant lizard.  But you would be wrong.  And the &lt;i&gt;MST3K &lt;/i&gt;gang&lt;i&gt; &lt;/i&gt;likewise drained every possible laugh from the name of the victim’s faithful Indian companion, Johnny Longbow.  And what can I possibly add that would bring any additional mirth to the line uttered by the hotpants-clad love interest of the were-lizard: “Come on, Johnny Longbow – I’d like to see you live up to your name.”  Not a thing, I confess.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
One interesting thing – OK, the only interesting thing – about &lt;i&gt;Track of the Moon Beast &lt;/i&gt;is that is was co-written by Bill Finger, the writer of many early Batman comics.  It’s the one and only directorial effort by Richard Ashe, who takes a very small budget and does very little with it.  The one eye-catching image in the movie comes in the first two minutes, when a big creepy, shiny mask appears before our hero in the desert.  (It turns out to be a prank played by two of Professor Longbow’s mischievous students.)  The only genuinely scary scene is the sudden, unexplained appearance of a country-rock singer in the mold of Keith Carradine from &lt;i&gt;Nashville&lt;/i&gt;.  There are low-budget horror movies that use their lack of resources to their advantage in creating a dank, grubby mood of despair, and then there are those with crappy rubber lizard suits.  This is one of the latter.

Here&amp;#39;s our list of the&amp;nbsp;Ten Worst Hairdos in Movie History. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Mickey Rourke, &lt;em&gt;YEAR OF THE DRAGON &lt;/em&gt;(1985) &lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

He might have become a major movie star (as opposed to an object of cult worship in France and some of your better dorm rooms) in the Hollywood Heartthrob, Good-Bad-but-Not-Evil division, if he&amp;#39;d found a few more roles like the Baltimore honeydripper he played in &lt;em&gt;Diner&lt;/em&gt;. But he drove his career into a ditch in a misguided effort to show what a tough, hard-slugging badass he was. His performance in this descent into the Michael Cimino-Oliver Stone Thunderdome tells you everything about what went wrong, and much of it is concentrated on his hair. Twenty-eight years old when the film was shot, Rourke seemed a little young for the role of a much-decorated NYPD veteran who learned about the deviousness of the Asian criminal mind while serving in Vietnam, more than ten years earlier. So the decision was made to send him down to the high school and have the erasers clapped together over his head. His chalk-encrusted tresses here make his entrance a guaranteed laugh-getter, especially since he wears a hat that he must have borrowed from a flatfoot in a Bogart movie; when he plops it down onto his noggin, you expect a cloud of white dust to envelop the room. (In some scenes his hair darkens to a grayish tint and then goes white again, suggesting that the testosterone release of beating up Chinese punks and having sex with Dutch-Japanese-supermodel-slash-godawful-actress &amp;quot;Ariane&amp;quot; has youth-restoring benefits, but they wear off fast.) &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Sean Penn, &lt;em&gt;CARLITO&amp;#39;S WAY &lt;/em&gt;(1993) &lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/f7Jw2F77GCI&amp;amp;rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"&gt;&lt;/embed&gt;&lt;/object&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Penn&amp;#39;s performance as Al Pacino&amp;#39;s fast-talking lawyer, who lusts after the bad-boy cred and sleazy thrills that his client has outgrown, is a beautiful comic turn, and the selflessness that makes it possible extends fully to his scalp. With a little mop of frizzy curlicues that suggest that he&amp;#39;s had his pubic hair transplanted onto his head, he looks like Art Garfunkel, Superstar. (This effect was especially funny back in 1993, when it was possible to go from this movie to see Jennifer Lynch&amp;#39;s &lt;em&gt;Boxing Helena &lt;/em&gt;and see that the actual Art Garfunkel had turned into Larry Fine, C.P.A.) His red mop grows more excitable and unruly as his character grows ever more dangerously unhinged. At the end, we hear a gunshot that signals that his character has been put out of Carlito&amp;#39;s misery, and it is a great disappointment that the camera cuts away without showing his hair scurrying away under its own power. Nobody in Hollywood knows how to set up a sequel anymore. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Javier Bardem, &lt;em&gt;PERDITA DURANGO&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;strong&gt;(1997)&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/01/23-End/javierbardemperdidadurango.JPG"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/01/23-End/javierbardemperdidadurango.JPG" align="right" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;You think his hair in &lt;em&gt;No Country for Old Men &lt;/em&gt;is bad? Pfft. For some of us, our first impression of Javier Bardem was with another bad hair cut, the one he had in Alex de la Iglesia&amp;#39;s &lt;em&gt;Perdita Durango &lt;/em&gt;(aka &lt;em&gt;Dance With the Devil&lt;/em&gt;). Playing a homicidal, kidnapping voodoo priest, Bardem sports an unholy mullet that could scar your eyeballs. It&amp;#39;s a scary character, and the hair cut makes him scarier because you know he knows he can get away with it. And you fear what would happen if you accidentally made fun of it. Nobody&amp;#39;s making &amp;quot;business in front, party in the back&amp;quot; jokes around him, we guarantee you. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Anne Bancroft in &lt;em&gt;THE HINDENBURG &lt;/em&gt;(1975) &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

The catastrophe was captured on film by a newsreel cameraman, and in 1975, some master of taste and sensitivity got the inspiration of trying to tap into the mid-&amp;#39;70s &amp;quot;disaster movie&amp;quot; fad by making a period melodrama leading up to the horror. Looking to tone this idea up a little, the movie posits that the explosion was set off deliberately, as an act of anti-Nazi sabotage. An alternate theory is that the saboteur felt that it was necessary to wipe Anne Bancroft&amp;#39;s hair off the face of the Earth, whatever the cost. Bancroft plays a German countess who is also a morphine addict, which must be pretty mild stuff compared to whatever the hell her hairdresser is on. Since this is the kind of movie that tries to impress you with the historical accuracy of its fashions and knick knacks, Bancroft&amp;#39;s grisly coiffure must have been the result of intense research. But could the researchers not have kept it to themselves that the stylish German junkie of 1937 walked around looking, as Pauline Kael put it with baleful accuracy, as if she had &amp;quot;black potato chips stuck to her head&amp;quot;? &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Keith Carradine in &lt;em&gt;TROUBLE IN MIND &lt;/em&gt;(1986) &lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/01/23-End/keithcarradinetroubleinmind.JPG"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/01/23-End/keithcarradinetroubleinmind.JPG" align="right" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;Every once in a while, the writer-director Alan Rudolph feels the need to make a movie so strange that all his other movies will consider reporting it to Homeland Security if it threatens to move into their neighborhood. At present, the holder of this title is probably his 1999 Kurt Vonnegut adaptation &lt;em&gt;Breakfast of Champions&lt;/em&gt;, but &lt;em&gt;Trouble in Mind&lt;/em&gt;, a sort-of-futuristic daydream set in &amp;quot;Rain City&amp;quot;, a drizzly place where the local criminal kingpin is played by Divine, took on all comers for quite a while there. This is one of the few times Divine played a non-drag role, but he must have brought his make-up case with him, because it looks as if Carradine got into it and made a hell of a mess. He plays a dopey young punk from the sticks who falls in with the wrong crowd and becomes overly enamored of the decadent thrills that Rain City has to offer. The most garish of these are apparently dispensed at the local Supercuts, because he keeps disappearing for awhile and then returning with his hair drenched in sticky-looking glop and twisted into fun house shapes, with his face painted as if he&amp;#39;d gotten a job as David Bowie&amp;#39;s stunt double on the cover of &lt;em&gt;Aladdin Sane&lt;/em&gt;.
