I hope to be spared as much pain as possible on the approach path. I was perfectly content before I was born, and I think of death as the same state. What I am grateful for is the gift of intelligence, and for life, love, wonder, and laughter. You can&amp;#39;t say it wasn&amp;#39;t interesting. My lifetime&amp;#39;s memories are what I have brought home from the trip. I will require them for eternity no more than that little souvenir of the Eiffel Tower I brought home from Paris.  I don&amp;#39;t expect to die anytime soon. But it could happen this moment, while I am writing…I hope not.  I have plans.”

Glenn Kenny brings reason to rejoice at &lt;a href="http://somecamerunning.typepad.com/some_came_running/2009/05/strong-simple-silences-the-friends-of-eddie-coyle-on-dvd.html" target="_blank"&gt;Some Came Running&lt;/a&gt;: &lt;i&gt;The Friends of Eddie Coyle&lt;/i&gt; is finally due out on DVD – in a Criterion edition, no less.  “‘Young film fans raised in the multiplex era might look back and lament the fact that no one is making movies like &lt;i&gt;The Friends of Eddie Coyle&lt;/i&gt; anymore,’ Kent Jones writes in his exemplary (as usual) essay on the 1973 film, included in the new Criterion DVD of it. ‘The truth is that they never did. There&amp;#39;s only this one.’  Robert Mitchum&amp;#39;s performance as Eddie, the hangdog, hard-luck crook whose quiet desperation—in this story, he&amp;#39;s due to start serving some time in a couple of weeks, and he&amp;#39;s just not going to be able to hack it—compels his every move, is a huge part of the film&amp;#39;s uniqueness. He underplays like nobody&amp;#39;s business, and never announces himself. Not only does the trademark Mitchum smirk never once cross his face—looking at his work here, you&amp;#39;d never believe he had it in the first place.”

At &lt;a href="http://www.popmatters.com/pm/feature/71321-who-needs-an-oscar-anyway-mickey-rourkes-homeboy/" target="_blank"&gt;PopMatters&lt;/a&gt;, Kit MacFarlane reconsiders Mickey Rourke in &lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;Homeboy&lt;/span&gt;.  “A glum and downbeat boxing film, &lt;i&gt;Homeboy&lt;/i&gt; not only anticipates many of the key concerns of the highly-celebrated &lt;i&gt;The Wrestler&lt;/i&gt;, but also, by now-obvious extension, the real life trajectory of Rourke himself. But the film fell into the ‘too depressing’ pit on its release, and the presence of standard genre cliches saw it treated dismissively by those who didn’t look close enough to see those same cliches being quietly, but firmly, derailed. Despite the presence of actors like Christopher Walken and Jon Polito, a delicate score by Eric Clapton, and even a fawning reference in Bob Dylan’s &lt;i&gt;Chronicles&lt;/i&gt; (&amp;quot;The movie traveled to the moon every time [Rourke] came onto the screen. Nobody could hold a candle to him.&amp;quot;), it is rarely mentioned today at all…Too depressing in 1988, &lt;i&gt;Homeboy&lt;/i&gt;‘s aura of sorrow now seems too delicate, too nuanced and poetic, next to the sensationalized sledgehammer misery pioneered by today’s hip angst-peddlers like Aronofsky, Todd Solondz, Larry Clark, and Christopher Nolan.”

&lt;a href="http://www.smartmoney.com/Spending/Rip-offs/10-Things-Movie-Critics-Wont-Tell-You/" target="_blank"&gt;SmartMoney&lt;/a&gt; lists 10 Things Movie Critics Won&amp;#39;t Tell You.  We’re fond of #7: You probably don’t want to hear this, but you need me.  “Want to stir people up? Ask them what they think of movie critics. Jen Davis of Louisville, Ky., is put off by what she sees as a superiority syndrome in the profession. ‘My opinion is just as valid, dammit!’ she says. Tammy Ras of Pascoag, R.I., is more militant: ‘If they say, “Don’t see it, it sucks,” that means, “Go see it, it’s great.”’ Sounds harsh, but the truth is, filmgoers need reviewers. As Salon.com’s Zacharek puts it, ‘Critics are the only thing standing between consumers and advertising.’ With hundreds of films released in theaters each year, ‘Critics are more important now than they ever were,’ she says. ‘There are just so many movies, so much aggressive hype.’”

Aside from the controversies over &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2008/03/06/robert-downey-jr-blacks-out.aspx" target="_blank"&gt;Robert Downey, Jr. in blackface&lt;/a&gt; and the use of &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2008/08/12/quot-tropic-thunder-quot-plays-the-quot-retard-quot-card.aspx" target="_blank"&gt;the word &amp;quot;retard,&amp;quot;&lt;/a&gt; the big pre-release buzz about &lt;i&gt;Tropic Thunder&lt;/i&gt; had Tom Cruise revitalizing both his career and his public image with his hilarious turn as foul-mouthed studio mogul Les Grossman. That said buzz originated with Team Cruise has never been doubted by me, but the entertainment media has been only too happy to nudge it along.  It&amp;#39;s good for business, after all; everyone loves a redemption story, particularly one that humanizes what has been a cold, calculating persona for some time. Tom Cruise with a paunch and bald wig?  He has no vanity! He&amp;#39;s ready to let loose and have some fun! He really doesn&amp;#39;t take himself so seriously after all. That&amp;#39;s the narrative we&amp;#39;ve had rammed down our throats, but is there any truth to it? Let&amp;#39;s find out after the jump, but be warned, minor &lt;i&gt;Tropic Thunder &lt;/i&gt;spoilers may ensue.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
So here&amp;#39;s the deal: Cruise has maybe ten minutes of screen time as bald, bearded, bespectacled blowhard Grossman. Despite the prosthetics, which include huge hairy forearms as well as the chrome dome and pronounced (but not &lt;i&gt;too&lt;/i&gt; pronounced) belly, Cruise does not exactly disappear into the role - he&amp;#39;s recognizably Cruise all the way. The nose knows, and besides, he doesn&amp;#39;t even do a voice. Conveniently, for him as well as the movie&amp;#39;s marketing team, he gets to have it both ways. He&amp;#39;s having fun and doing an &amp;quot;outrageous&amp;quot; character, but there&amp;#39;s never a moment we feel like we&amp;#39;re &lt;i&gt;watching&lt;/i&gt; an outrageous character - it&amp;#39;s clearly Tom Cruise Industries up there on the screen.

In fact, if I didn&amp;#39;t know better, I&amp;#39;d think director, co-writer and co-star Ben Stiller was having a little fun at Cruise&amp;#39;s expense. After all, right here in the same movie we have Robert Downey, Jr. as a pompous, self-absorbed genius actor who undergoes an experimental process to appear African-American in the movie-within-the-movie. (Of course, since Downey actually &lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;is&lt;/span&gt; a talented actor, he disappears into both the role of Australian thespian Kirk Lazarus and that of platoon sergeant Osirus.)  And we also have Jack Black as a desperate comic actor who dons a variety of fakey prosthetics for his multiple roles in &lt;i&gt;The Fatties, Fart 2&lt;/i&gt;.

The joke is on &lt;i&gt;somebody&lt;/i&gt; here, but I don&amp;#39;t think it&amp;#39;s Cruise, since he&amp;#39;s buddies with Stiller, who actually thinks Cruise is funny - or at least that&amp;#39;s what he told &lt;a href="http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20217667,00.html" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;i&gt;Entertainment Weekly&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/a&gt;. Unless I&amp;#39;m forgetting something, the last time Cruise made me laugh since &lt;i&gt;Risky Business&lt;/i&gt; was his &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2008/01/16/new-and-better-realities-for-reals-maybe-or-something.aspx" target="_blank"&gt;Scientology recruitment video&lt;/a&gt; leaked onto YouTube earlier this year - and that was the sort of nervous laughter I usually reserve for Charles Manson interviews. By my count, Cruise is the 12th funniest person in the movie, behind Downey, Stiller, Black, Danny McBride, Steve Coogan,  Brandon T. Jackson, Bill Hader, Jay Baruchel, Matthew McConaughey, a kid playing a Vietnamese heroin mule, and even Nick Nolte, not generally regarded as one of our foremost humorists.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Cruise dances in character over the end credits, and we are reminded of Hollywood&amp;#39;s second most famous Scientologist, John Travolta, and how his career revival in &lt;i&gt;Pulp Fiction&lt;/i&gt; included a dance scene that echoed fond memories of &lt;i&gt;Grease &lt;/i&gt;and &lt;i&gt;Saturday Night Fever&lt;/i&gt;. Here I guess we&amp;#39;re supposed to flash back to Cruise dancing in his underwear in &lt;i&gt;Risky B&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;i&gt;usiness &lt;/i&gt;and remember why we used to love him. Honestly, I was more creeped out than amused. How hard would it have been for Stiller to find an actual bald, hairy fat fuck for this role? Jon Polito would have killed, or James Gandolfini. I mean, wasn&amp;#39;t that the point of the Downey character - that it&amp;#39;s probably a good idea to hire an actual black actor than an Australian in blackface? Instead it&amp;#39;s just the latest chapter in the Tom Cruise psychodrama - the extended version of jumping on Oprah&amp;#39;s couch.

Gould scuffled for work for many years before 1970&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;M*A*S*H&lt;/i&gt; made him not just a star but a counterculture icon and a &lt;i&gt;Time&lt;/i&gt; cover boy.  Just a couple of years after his anointment by newsmagazine, bad career decisions and personal choices had left Gould with his head in a bad place and reputation for being not just borderline unemployable but, as Pauline Kael put it (not unaffectionately), an &amp;quot;anachronism.&amp;quot; These days, Gould is regarded not as a superstar or a flake but a pretty solid pro--okay, maybe a flaky pro--and his best performances  particularly the work he did for Robert Altman in &lt;i&gt;M*A*S*H, The Long Goodbye&lt;/i&gt;, and &lt;i&gt;California Split&lt;/i&gt;, hold up as well as anything done in front of a camera in the 1970s. (His Philip Marlowe in &lt;i&gt;The Long Goodbye&lt;/i&gt;, once a lethal flop, is now widely remembered as one of the great comebacks of all time.) &lt;a href="http://www.bam.org/film/series.aspx?id=198"&gt;&amp;quot;Elliott Gould: Star for an Uptight Age&lt;/a&gt; (August 1--21) at the Brooklyn Academy of Music features all those pictures as well as Gould&amp;#39;s first significant movie role, as one of the titular quartet in Paul Mazursky&amp;#39;s 1969 satirical time capsule &lt;i&gt;Bob &amp;amp; Carol &amp;amp; Ted &amp;amp; Alice.&lt;/i&gt; In an interview in the current issue of &lt;i&gt;Stop Smiling&lt;/i&gt; that centers on &lt;i&gt;California Split&lt;/i&gt;, Gould calls himself &amp;quot;a jazz actor&amp;quot;, and in these musical, improvisationl performances, which have a tossed-off feeling that belies their technical daring and emotional depth, it&amp;#39;s easy to see what he means. The program is padded out with other early-&amp;#39;70s pictures that mostly serve to chart the course by which Gould contrived to stay employed in movies between gigs with Bob and Paulie. (The big exceptions are the limper than limp &lt;i&gt;I Love My Wife&lt;/i&gt; and the overblown, hollow &lt;i&gt;Harry and Walter Go to New York&lt;/i&gt;, which don&amp;#39;t serve any purpose whatsoever.) &lt;i&gt;Getting Straight&lt;/i&gt;, one of Gould&amp;#39;s biggest hits, is a campus-unrest flick directed by Richard (&lt;i&gt;The Stunt Man&lt;/i&gt;) Rush that provides a taste of what a thinking-young-person&amp;#39;s exploitation movie was like circa 1970. &lt;i&gt;Busting&lt;/i&gt; (1974), an attempt to package law-and-order politics in a loose, sort-of-comic Gouldian package, wound up being most notable as the movie that taught Starsky and Hutch how to dress. And Ingmar Bergman&amp;#39;s 1971 &lt;i&gt;The Touch&lt;/i&gt;, a movie that did Gould no good in any department--it didn&amp;#39;t do Bergman any favors either--is worth checking out if you&amp;#39;re a Bergman completist or would like to see just why so many people thought that, by that point, Gould had already worn out his welcome.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

Starting August 2 and running through most of the month, the Museum of Modern Art&amp;#39;s &lt;a href="http://www.moma.org/exhibitions/exhibitions.php?id=6732"&gt;&amp;quot;Collaborations in the Collection&amp;quot;&lt;/a&gt; series spotlights Joel and Ethan Cohen, a pair of filmmakers whose collaborative creator was kind of inevitable. On August 5, critic and interviewer Elvis Mitchell, last seen on the Turner Classic Movies series &lt;i&gt;Under the Influence&lt;/i&gt;, where he barely managed to overcome his shock at hearing Quentin Tarantino confess that he has never seen the Judy Garland &lt;i&gt;A Star Is Born&lt;/i&gt;, will swing by with a print of his new HBO film &lt;i&gt;The Black List, Vol. 1&lt;/i&gt; tucked under his arm, and the night after that will include a special screening of the monumental new Katrina documentary &lt;i&gt;Trouble the Waters.&lt;/i&gt; A smaller but still very affecting documentary touched by Katrina, &lt;i&gt;Faubourg Treme: The Untold Story of Black New Orleans&lt;/i&gt;, is also among the many feature films and shorts.

&lt;b&gt;SAN FRANCISCO&lt;/b&gt;: Kent MacKenzie&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;The Exiles&lt;/i&gt;, a stunning, black and white semi-documentary look at a group of Native Americans drifting through a dazed, aimless existence in Los Angeles&amp;#39;s Bunker Hill, was recently plucked from forgotten obscurity by some hardy restorers and, &amp;quot;presented by&amp;quot; Native American novelist Sherman Alexie and Charles Burnett, recently started making its way across the country thanks to Milestone, the same company that brought Burnett&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;Killer of Sheep&lt;/i&gt; back from the dead. It &lt;a href="http://www.thecastrotheatre.com/p-list.html#exiles%22"&gt;plays the Castro&lt;/a&gt; August 1 through the 7th.

&lt;b&gt;LOS ANGELES&lt;/b&gt;: August 1 and 2, the Los Angles County Museum of Art presents &lt;a href="http://www.lacma.org/programs/FilmSeriesSchedule.aspx"&gt;&amp;quot;Two Comedies by Pietro Germi&amp;quot;&lt;/a&gt;, and they&amp;#39;re the right two: the justly famous &lt;i&gt;Divorce Italian Style&lt;/i&gt; (1961) and the even funnier follow-up &lt;i&gt;Seduced and Abandoned&lt;/i&gt; (1964), both featuring the luscious comedienne Stefania Sandrelli. The only way to imagine a better package for a hot weekend would be if the museum would spring for a lemonade waterfall.

Our fearless – and quite possibly senseless – movie janitor is watching every movie on the IMDb Bottom 100 list.  Join us now for another installment of &lt;b&gt;Unwatchable&lt;/b&gt;.
&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
The kernel of almost any bad movie is a really terrible idea, and at first glance it appears that 2005’s big screen version of &lt;i&gt;The Honeymooners&lt;/i&gt; fits the bill.  It reeks of a concept dreamed up in a corner cubicle at Paramount Pictures by a junior development executive desperate to hang onto his job.  “I’ve got it!” he shouts, jumping up from his chair and dumping his coffee all over his never-used keyboard.  “The Black Honeymooners!  Eddie Murphy IS Ralph Kramden!  Chris Rock IS Norton!”
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Alas, the junior executive’s dream cast fails to develop, and eventually it is Cedric the Entertainer who tries to fill the Great One’s shoes, with Mike Epps as his long-suffering sidekick.  As &lt;i&gt;The Honeymooners&lt;/i&gt; opens, it is 1999 and Brooklyn bus driver Ralph Kramden (Mr. Entertainer) is putting his “Bustin’ Loose” moves on passenger Alice (Gabrielle Union).  He unveils the first of his get-rich quick schemes: a Y2K Survival Kit that’s sure to make him millions when the new year arrives and everything comes crashing down.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Six years later, Ralph and Alice are married and living in a dumpy apartment.  Sadly, Ralph’s anticipated global chaos never arrived, so he’s busy with new and even more ill-fated schemes while Alice works at the diner and dreams of home ownership.  A little old lady is selling her duplex, which would be perfect for the Kramdens and their neighbors, Ed and Trixie Norton (Epps and Regina Hall), but a slimy developer (Eric Stolz) has his eyes on the property as well.  With the help of Jon Polito and John Leguizamo, Ralph and Ed pin all their hopes on a greyhound they find half-dead in a dumpster.  Can this abandoned stray win the big race, or is Ralph doomed to a life of sharing a small apartment with Gabrielle Union?
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Drained of all that hilarious domestic violence humor that might prove upsetting to a modern audience (Ralph’s “To the moon, Alice!” is transformed into a lovey-dovey sweet nothing), &lt;i&gt;The Honeymooners&lt;/i&gt; is a decidedly mediocre but good-natured family comedy that has no business being on the Bottom 100 list.  Ralph says it best: “You just a regular UPN sitcom, huh, Alice?”  It’s true that the comedic stylings of Mike Epps are so low-key as to be undetectable to the human eye, but Cedric the Entertainer has his effectively blustery moments.  And of course, where there’s Polito, there’s quality.  In the tradition of Burt Reynolds’ greatest contribution to cinema, the end-credit bloopers prove to be the movie’s high point.  Still, I’ve seen at least 100 worse family comedies in my capacity as movie janitor for the &lt;i&gt;Fort Worth Star-Telegram&lt;/i&gt;, so &lt;i&gt;The Honeymooners &lt;/i&gt;rates only a single Maury.
