Russell is the kind of tantrum-throwing brat even Christian Bale would recommend for anger management classes. George Clooney came to blows with him on the set of &lt;em&gt;Three Kings&lt;/em&gt;, and Lily Tomlin surely contemplated crushing his nuts during &lt;a class="" href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2008/04/21/david-o-russell-people-person.aspx"&gt;his notorious freak-out&lt;/a&gt; on the set of &lt;em&gt;I ♥ Huckabees&lt;/em&gt;...but even Clooney admits the dude’s got chops, and Russell’s tale of U.S. soldiers attempting to heist millions in Kuwaiti bullion from Saddam Hussein during the Persian Gulf War is still the best (fictional) cinematic depiction of America’s poisonous love-hate relationship with Hussein and Iraq. I learned more about our nation’s cynical, fucked-up Middle East policy from Russell’s entertaining “comedy” caper than I did from ten years of Bush family press conferences. The moral of the story: there’s definitely money to be made in Iraq, if your conscience isn’t bothered (like Clooney’s Major Archie Gates) by the thought of letting innocent civilians die as collateral damage, or (like Nora Dunn’s TV reporter Adriana Cruz) by the sight of birds dying in war-made oil slicks, or (like Mark Wahlberg’s Sgt. Troy Barlow) the realization that even the bad guys (here represented&amp;nbsp;by&amp;nbsp;Saïd Taghmaoui’s electrifying Iraqi interrogator) are suffering while the war profiteers get plenty rich, plenty quick. &lt;embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/_twg7Jj_mqQ&amp;amp;hl=en&amp;amp;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="344"&gt;&lt;/embed&gt;&lt;/object&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Wes Anderson’s debut boasts few of the stylistic hallmarks of his subsequent work, though that doesn’t make it any less distinctive. &lt;em&gt;Bottle Rocket&lt;/em&gt; focuses on the misadventures of wannabe-criminal Dignan (Owen Wilson) and his best friend Anthony (Luke Wilson), both of them aimlessly searching for contentment, companionship and love in the Texas suburbs. Instead of &lt;em&gt;Rushmore&lt;/em&gt; and &lt;em&gt;The Royal Tenenbaums&lt;/em&gt;’ meticulously arranged compositions, Anderson’s cinematography is much more loose, which leaves the proceedings visually bland but, unlike the stultifying &lt;em&gt;The Darjeeling Limited&lt;/em&gt;, full of ramshackle life. The director’s attempts at pathos are somewhat undercut by his scripting, most notably with regards to Anthony’s sketchy, preposterous relationship with motel housekeeper Inez (Lumi Cavazo). Yet if the film lacks a bit of polish, it nonetheless is both consistently funny and narratively efficient, two vital qualities that are most fully on display during Dignan and Anthony’s outstanding robbery of a local bookstore. Sometimes it’s not even intentional. All Kevin McDonald’s Dr. Chris Cooper and his team of pharmaceuticals technicians wanted to do was create a pill that helped chronically depressed people cope with their daily lives…chemically. What they ended up doing was creating Gleemonex, a drug that isolates your happiest moment and replays it over and over in your head, condemning you to comatose bliss forever. Naturally, Cooper’s employers recognize the potential to make obscene amounts of money, and the race is on to see if Dr. Cooper will be corrupted by the cash himself, or do the right thing. The first (and, so far, only) Kids in the Hall movie is inconsistent and occasionally pretty bad, but give it credit for one of the darkest-toned comedies of the last few decades, in which doing the right thing and condemning millions of people to paralyzing depression and sadness are synonymous. &lt;embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/upbjNQo4XxI&amp;amp;hl=en&amp;amp;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="344"&gt;&lt;/embed&gt;&lt;/object&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In Albert Brooks&amp;#39; anti-yuppie satire, Brooks plays an ad executive who is so programmed with his fantasy of how his career should go that when he isn&amp;#39;t given the promotion he&amp;#39;s expecting -- because, his boss explains, he&amp;#39;s &amp;quot;too clever&amp;quot; to be wasted on the empty-suit job -- and offered a different promotion that involves a move to New York City, he blows his top and takes a flame thrower to every bridge in sight. Convinced that they&amp;#39;ve reached a stage in their lives where they&amp;#39;re ready to move beyond conventional standards of success, Brooks and his wife (Julie Hagerty) liquidate their assets, including their house, and set out to explore the country in a Winnebago the size of Rhode Island with a $145,000 nest egg tucked in their purse. Unfortunately, Hagerty is seized by a gambling mania in Las Vegas and pisses away the bulk of their money, and Brooks makes a stab at using his professional skills to persuade the casino boss (Garry Marshall) to return their money; he improvises a whole campaign about how the casino can benefit from the free publicity it&amp;#39;ll get once the story gets out that it&amp;#39;s a gambling den with &amp;quot;heart.&amp;quot; Technically, this is not a get-rich scheme but a desperate, sweaty, make-it-as-if-this-hadn&amp;#39;t-happened scheme. But if more people would react this way to the loss of everything they have instead of turning ashen and wandering into traffic, the past six or seven months would have been a lot more fun. It probably feels like a long enough time ago to Diesel, which presumably accounts for his presence in the new &lt;i&gt;Fast &amp;amp; Furious&lt;/i&gt;. In 2003, Diesel explained his absence from the sequel &lt;i&gt;2 Fast 2 Furious&lt;/i&gt; by saying that he had one foot in three movies--&lt;i&gt;Pitch Black&lt;/i&gt;, a lively little B movie that  led to the far more expensive sequel &lt;i&gt;The Chronicles of Riddick&lt;/i&gt;, and the extreme-007 movie &lt;i&gt;XXX&lt;/i&gt;, as well as &lt;i&gt;The Fast and the Furious&lt;/i&gt;--with serious franchise potential, and rather then spread himself too thin, he had to decide which two were likeliest to be the most successful in the long term. Five years after &lt;i&gt;Riddick&lt;/i&gt; belly-flopped and the failure of the &lt;i&gt;XXX&lt;/i&gt; sequel, in which Diesel wound up being replaced by Ice Cube, it&amp;#39;s no small wonder that he wants a do-over. (In between the two &lt;i&gt;Fast/Furious&lt;/i&gt; films co-starring Diesel and Paul Walker, there was a Diesel-free sequel starring Walker and a Walker-free third film, &lt;i&gt;The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift&lt;/i&gt;, to which Diesel contributed a cameo. The new movie basically reconstitutes the cast of the first film--reuniting Diesel with Walker, Michelle Rodriguez, and Jordana Brewster--making it somewhere between a remake, a sequel, and a &amp;quot;reboot.&amp;quot;) Given the dismissive, somewhat lordly attitude that the amply franchised Diesel once showed towards the role of hot-car king Dominic Toretto, it would only make sense for him to have mixed feelings about this. On the other hand, given the reception that Diesel has gotten for the movies he&amp;#39;s made since &lt;i&gt;XXX&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;Riddick&lt;/i&gt;--&lt;i&gt;The Pacifier, Find Me Guilty&lt;/i&gt;, and the disowned-by-its-own-director &lt;i&gt;Babylon A.D.&lt;/i&gt;--he might just be happy to be somewhere he&amp;#39;s wanted.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
He can, at least, take comfort in knowing that he&amp;#39;s not the only movie actor ever to take stock of his own career and concluded that his best move might be to hit the &amp;quot;reset&amp;quot; button. In fact, he&amp;#39;s practically part of a long tradition:

&lt;b&gt;Peter Sellers/Inspector Clouseau&lt;/b&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2009/03/175px-Sellers_pinkpanther7.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2009/03/175px-Sellers_pinkpanther7.jpg" align="right" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;Sellers was set on the path to living legend status in England by his work on &lt;i&gt;The Goon Show&lt;/i&gt;, and his appearances in such British comedies as &lt;i&gt;I&amp;#39;m All Right, Jack, The Smallest Show on Earth, The Wrong Arm of the Law,&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;Only Two Can Play&lt;/i&gt; and the Stanley Kubrick films &lt;i&gt;Lolita&lt;/i&gt; (1962) and &lt;i&gt;Dr. Strangelove&lt;/i&gt; (1964) made him a favorite in the United States with the art-house audience. But it was his creation of the bumbling French police detective Clouseau in Blake Edwards&amp;#39;s 1963 &lt;i&gt;The Pink Panther&lt;/i&gt; that put him across with the mass audience. In that movie, Sellers was a supporting player to the top-billed David Niven, and he only landed the role because Peter Ustinov dropped out days before he was to begin filming. But so much of the movie&amp;#39;s enormous success was so clearly the result of the slapstick aplomb that Sellers brought to his thinly written part that Edwards brought him back to star as Clouseau in 1964&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;A Shot in the Dark&lt;/i&gt;. Although this was the movie that introduced the actors and characters who would become the standard Clouseau supporting cast--including Herbert Lom as Clouseau&amp;#39;s seething, tic-ridden boss Dreyfus (who would here establish a pattern of trying to kill Clouseau after the detective&amp;#39;s incompetence had driven him to hysterical madness) and Bert Kwouk as Clouseau&amp;#39;s houseboy Kato--the script was actually based on a Broadway play that had in turn been based on a French play by Marcel Archard, called &lt;i&gt;L&amp;#39;Idiot&lt;/i&gt;. The screenwriters, Edwards and William Peter Blatty, simply inserted the Clouseau character into the comic-murder mystery set-up, and allowed Sellers to go to town with it.  Not the least remarkable thing about the movie is that, by casting the delectable Elke Sommer as a ditsy heroine in need of a savior--she plays a woman who&amp;#39;s been falsely accused of murder--Edwards actually managed to turn Clouseau into a romantic hero while intensifying his physical and mental incompetence.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;i&gt;A Shot in the Dark&lt;/i&gt;, the only Clouseau film that doesn&amp;#39;t have the character&amp;#39;s name or a reference to the Pink Panther in the title, was probably the funniest of all the Edwards-Sellers collaborations(including the non-Clouseau &lt;i&gt;The Party&lt;/i&gt;), and perhaps they should have folded Clouseau up and filed him away after that. So far as Sellers was concerned at the time, that&amp;#39;s just what they were going to do, and when United Artists wanted to bring the character back in 1968, they had to make do with Alan Arkin for the ill-fated &lt;i&gt;Inspector Clouseau.&lt;/i&gt; But by 1975, Sellers had suffered through an unrelenting string of flops that he later described as &amp;quot;my bad patch&amp;quot;, and Edwards had gone down in flames with the big-budget disaster &lt;i&gt;Darling Lili&lt;/i&gt; (1970) and a string of smaller but no more successful films. They paddled back to safe land with the 1975 &lt;i&gt;The Return of the Pink Panther&lt;/i&gt;, in which Sellers adopted the costume style that Arkin had used in his one turn as the character and introduced the rubbery, incomprehensible accent that some French critics would never forgive him for.  Sellers would dutifuly report for work on &lt;i&gt;The Pink Panther Strikes Again&lt;/i&gt; (1976) and then &lt;i&gt;The Curse of the Pink Panther&lt;/i&gt; (1978), only those with calloused eyeballs could fail to see that this accomplished actor wasn&amp;#39;t exactly thrilled to be going through the same old paces again and again. The prodigiously imaginative Sellers was trapped in a role that had gotten smaller over time; no longer a layered if farcical character, the Clousesu of the later films is simply a dolt who is consistently wrong about everything and keeps falling over things yet somehow manages to end in triumph. Yet Sellers was also a famously insecure man who seems to have decided that only as Clouseau could he still star in hit movies. When Sellers died in the summer of 1980, just months after racking up an Academy Award nomination and a &lt;i&gt;Time&lt;/i&gt; magazine cover story for his starring role in &lt;i&gt;Being There&lt;/i&gt;, he was preparing to reprise the role yet again for &lt;i&gt;The Romance of the Pink Panther.&lt;/i&gt; Edwards, who seemed ready to sap the tree until the whole forest was gone, managed to squeeze out one last Sellers-as-Clouseau film--&lt;i&gt;Trail of the Pink Panther&lt;/i&gt;, released two years after Sellers&amp;#39;s death--using old clips and previously unseen footage, before moving on to such dubious replacements as Ted Wass and Robert Benigni.

The role of Norman Bates, motel manager, taxidermist, and mother&amp;#39;s boy, took Perkins&amp;#39;s movie career to another level, but it also got him typecast playing villains and loonies, which became more of a problem as the gifted, intelligent actor&amp;#39;s style became more mannered and self-consciously neurosthenic  over the years. His leading man days seemed to be over for good when Universal Pictures declared its interest in making a sequel to &lt;i&gt;Psycho&lt;/i&gt; with Perkins reprising his role. Directed by the late Richard Franklin (&lt;i&gt;Road Games, Cloak &amp;amp; Dagger&lt;/i&gt;), the movie had no input from Robert Bloch, who created the character or Norman in his original novel (and who cashed in on the publicity by writing his own &lt;i&gt;Psycho II&lt;/i&gt; novel), nor from Joseph Stefano, who adapted it for the screenplay, and Alfred Hitchcock had been dead for two years. Perkins himself turned down the offer when it was first presented to him, but then, after it became clear that the studio intended to go ahead with or without him, but with another actor playing Norman, he began to feel proprietorial about his best-known role. When you consider that the movie was always going to be something of a travesty, the finished product isn&amp;#39;t that awful. In the most effective moments, Franklin had the grace to play the violent set pieces--which include a climactic scene involving a woman who identifies herself as Norman&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;real&lt;/i&gt; mother and a well-timed blow to the head with a shovel--as black slapstick comedy, treating what everyone in the audience knows about Norman&amp;#39;s past and his proclivities as a shared dirty joke.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
The movie was given a handsome promotional campaign that aimed to tap into nostalgic fans of the original while also reaching out to younger moviegoers who were advised that Norman Bates was the granddaddy of such slasher-movie icons as the boogeymen of the &lt;i&gt;Halloween&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;Friday the 13th&lt;/i&gt; series. In the end, &lt;i&gt;Psycho II&lt;/i&gt;, the movie whose title suggested a &lt;i&gt;Saturday Night Live&lt;/i&gt; spoof, was a big enough hit that the studio wanted more. And once Perkins had played Norman again, he couldn&amp;#39;t seem to get him out of his system. He not only agreed to return for &lt;i&gt;Psycho III&lt;/i&gt; (1986), but he also signed on to use it as his movie directing debut. &lt;i&gt;Pyscho III&lt;/i&gt;, which began with a sequence that almost could have passed as the opening of &lt;i&gt;Vertigo II&lt;/i&gt; and ended with Norman once again headed for the nutbin, was in turn followed by &lt;i&gt;Psycho IV: The Beginning&lt;/i&gt;, a 1990 cable TV film, written by Joseph Stefano, in which Perkins co-starred with E.T.&amp;#39;s playmate, Henry Thomas, as the young Norman, and Olivia Hussey, twenty-two yeara after she&amp;#39;d starred in Franco Zeffirelli&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;Romeo and Juliet&lt;/i&gt;, as Norman&amp;#39;s mother. The film ended with the birth of Norman&amp;#39;s son, who may or may not carry the hereditary psycho-killer gene, setting up the potential for a &amp;quot;Norman, Jr.&amp;quot; franchise that has yet to be realized. Perkins died in 1992, six years before Gus Van Sant&amp;#39;s official (and infamous) &amp;quot;shot-by-shot&amp;quot; remake starring a glassy-eyed and miscast Vince Vaughan as Norman.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;b&gt;Sean Connery/James Bond&lt;/b&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2009/03/200px-007NSNA.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2009/03/200px-007NSNA.jpg" align="right" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;Connery renounced and returned to the role that made him a star on two separate occasions. After Connery sat out &lt;i&gt;On Her Majesty&amp;#39;s Secret Service&lt;/i&gt; (1969), the sixth film in the official Bond franchise, United artists lured him back for the 1971 &lt;i&gt;Diamonds Are Forever&lt;/i&gt; with a deal that included a wheelbarrow full of money and the studio&amp;#39;s agreeing to finance &lt;i&gt;The Offense&lt;/i&gt;, a movie Connery wanted to make with director Sidney Lumet. Connery&amp;#39;s performance in &lt;i&gt;Diamonds&lt;/i&gt; is probably the best-&lt;i&gt;acted&lt;/i&gt; Bond of his career, but so much of what surrounded him in the movie was tacky and played-out that he must have left the set feeling confirmed in his decision to leave the role of Bond to whoever wanted him. So it was a shock when it as announced, thirteen years later, that the now 53-year-old Connery had agreed to return the role. Hitting the interview circuit, Connery coyly insisted that he&amp;#39;d always said that he&amp;#39;d be happy to do another Bond film if he was presented with a wow of a script, and he also hinted that the new movie would make great, subversive use of his advanced age. 
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
In fact, the new film &lt;i&gt;Never Say Never Again&lt;/i&gt;, had its roots not in a brilliant screenplay with a daring new take on the character but in the conclusion of a legal battle between the producer Kevin McClory and the producers of the Bond franchise, which left McClory with the remake rights to &lt;i&gt;Thunderball.&lt;/i&gt; The resulting film is mostly a tired action flick that looks as if the director, Irvin Kershner (whose 1966 &lt;i&gt;A Fine Madness&lt;/i&gt; boasts one of the best of Connery&amp;#39;s early performances), hadn&amp;#39;t recharged since his previous job, &lt;i&gt;The Empire Strikes Back&lt;/i&gt;. Connery moves through it gamely, despite being subjected to such indignities as an ill-fitting hairpiece and a glaring edit where you can see him disappear from the frame and a stunt double reappear in his place. Under the circumstances, he seems understandably happy to leave the film to be stolen by the actors playing the villains, Klaus Maria Brandaeur and Barbara Carrera. Originally, plans were announced to release the movie in the summer so that it could go head to head against the latest &amp;quot;real&amp;quot; Bond movie starring Roger Moore, &lt;i&gt;Octopussy&lt;/i&gt;. In the end, the studio blinked, and &lt;i&gt;Never Say Never Again&lt;/i&gt; opened later in the fall. Despite its lack of sparkle, it was a huge hit. At this stage in his career, four years away from his Oscar-winning turn in &lt;i&gt;The Untouchables&lt;/i&gt;, Connery was pretty much bulletproof, and his decision to break his vow, and his having so little to show for it, did his reputation no real harm. Presumably he walked away feeling that the project was worth doing so long as it had succeeded in its real mission--i.e., to give the Bond franchise owners who he felt had underpaid him throughout the &amp;#39;60s a little agita.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Not all unexpected reunions in movies are between actors and characters. Some are between actors and directors, such as the infamously difficult relationship between Henry Hathaway and Dennis Hopper. Early in Hopper&amp;#39;s career, Hathaway cast him in his 1958 Western &lt;i&gt;From Hell to Texas&lt;/i&gt;. Then in 1966, he used him again in the John Wayne picture &lt;i&gt;The Sons of Katie Elder&lt;/i&gt;. In a story that became legendary after Hopper repeated it again to interviewers during his post-&lt;i&gt;Blue Velvet&lt;/i&gt; comeback, Hopper was reluctant to give a particular line reading that the director was insistent on, so Hathaway had Hopper do take after take until the broken actor finally did just as he was told--after which Hathaway declared his intention to have the already shaky actor driven out of the business. Three years later, Hathaway hired Hopper for a small but memorable part in &lt;i&gt;True Grit&lt;/i&gt;, the movie that would win Wayne an Academy Award for Best Actor. Hopper has speculated that Hathaway decided to make this magnanimous gesture because Hopper had married Brooke Hayward, the daughter of Margaret Sullavan and the producer Leland Hayward, and thought that the young man deserved to be given the chance to support his new family. If anything like that did go through Hathaway&amp;#39;s mind, the joke was on him: Hopper had been using his time off from banging on casting office doors to get his own directorial debut made. The movie, &lt;i&gt;Easy Rider&lt;/i&gt;, which made it clear that there was a wide audience for a &amp;quot;youth cinema&amp;quot; that identified itself as part of the counterculture, was released in the summer of 1969, the same time that &lt;i&gt;True Grit&lt;/i&gt; was playing to audiences who saw it as an antidote to new-fangled ideas and strobe-happy trip sequences. Both movies established themselves as zeitgeist hits and cleaned up, but Hopper and Hayward&amp;#39;s marriage wouldn&amp;#39;t survive to the end of that year.

ourselves in your number.)&amp;nbsp; You want to be able to turn on the TV -- not the computer -- and watch a good movie, anytime you want, without having to program anything -- for free.&amp;nbsp; After all, wasn&amp;#39;t that the promise of the new modern era?&amp;nbsp; Wasn&amp;#39;t that the allure of the digital age -- any movie you want, any time you want, no waiting, no fees? &lt;/font&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;Well, assuming you have digital cable, Video On Demand was made for lazy gasbags like you.&amp;nbsp; Most of the stuff shown on VOD is either pay-per-view or, to put it mildly, dire, but occasionally, a gem will pop up on the &amp;quot;Free Movies&amp;quot; feature as a reward for infinitely patient cheapskates like yours truly.&amp;nbsp; So, once a week, we&amp;#39;ll bring you a handful of not-completely terrible movies you can watch whenever you want, for zero dollars and change.&amp;nbsp; (Check your local provider for channel - FEARnet this week is featuring &lt;i&gt;Night of the Creeps&lt;/i&gt; as one of its free movies on demand.&amp;nbsp; This underrated 1986 camp-horror classic from cult director Fred Dekker is a real winner -- it never takes its zombies-from-out-space-plot too seriously, and plays around with the conventions of the genre years before the &lt;i&gt;Scream &lt;/i&gt;franchise got the idea.&amp;nbsp; The characters are all named after cult directors (Raimi, Carpenter, Cronenberg, etc.), and best of all, it&amp;#39;s held together by a swell performance from beloved tough-guy character actor Tom Atkins.&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;- The Sundance Channel&amp;#39;s on-demand service is offering a look at John Huston&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;The Dead&lt;/i&gt;, gratis.&amp;nbsp; The final film Huston ever made, it&amp;#39;s also one of his finest and most personal; adapted from a very fine James Joyce short story, it features some astonishing performances (including by his daughter, Anjelica) in a story involving a woman&amp;#39;s memories of her long-dead first love, and how it stirs emotions in her husband during an Epiphany gathering.&amp;nbsp; Best of all, &lt;i&gt;The Dead&lt;/i&gt; isn&amp;#39;t currently available in a U.S. DVD release, so this opportunity is even more special.&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;- Turner Classic Movies also has an on-demand service, and free this week is the classic 1948 &lt;i&gt;noir &lt;/i&gt;flick &lt;i&gt;Naked City&lt;/i&gt;.&amp;nbsp; Somewhere between solid post-war &lt;i&gt;noir, &lt;/i&gt;hardboiled police procedural, and ripe pre-war crime drama, &lt;i&gt;Naked City &lt;/i&gt;is a tightly wound look at every step of a brutal murder investigation in New York.&amp;nbsp; Directed by legendary &lt;i&gt;noir&lt;/i&gt; specialist Jules Dassin, &lt;i&gt;Naked City&lt;/i&gt; features a terrific villain in Ted DeCorsia, a gritty semi-documentary filming style, and an absolutely gripping extended chase scene through the city.&amp;nbsp; It was later made into a popular TV crime show in the 1950s .&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;- FEARnet&amp;#39;s on-demand service coughs up another great free offering this week in &lt;i&gt;Escape from New York&lt;/i&gt;.&amp;nbsp; Made during the period when a new John Carpenter movie was cause for excitment, this cult classic takes place in a near-future dystopia where New York City is a maximum-security prison.&amp;nbsp; When President Donald Pleasance&amp;#39;s plane crashes there with the nuclear football on board, it&amp;#39;s up to Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken, one of the all-time great screen bad-asses, to bail him out.&amp;nbsp; Russell gamely waltzes with a swell cast that includes Adrienne Barbeau, Lee Van Cleef, Ernest Borgnine, Isaac Hayes, Harry Dean Stanton -- and good ol&amp;#39; Tom Atkins.&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;- Finally, TNT&amp;#39;s on-demand service this week offers the chance to see John Singleton&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;Boyz N the Hood&lt;/i&gt;.&amp;nbsp; The 1991 film set off a wave of west coast gangsta dramas, but &lt;i&gt;Boyz&lt;/i&gt; was the first and is still one of the best, as Singleton (whose filmmaking skills are raw and exciting here) takes a look at a group of childhood friends who struggle in different ways against the rough life of gang-ridden south central Los Angeles.&amp;nbsp; Larry Fishburne&amp;#39;s performance is a standout, and this was one of the first movies in which evidence was presented that Ice Cube was a good actor -- evidence which has been sorely lacking in recent years.&lt;/font&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;b&gt;Related alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;This week, the big studios continue to roll out their summer releases, and the holiday DVD cash grab continues.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;DVD of the Week:&lt;/b&gt; While it certainly isn’t the most revered movie getting a DVD release this week, I’d say that the new Criterion Collection edition of Sam Fuller’s &lt;i&gt;White Dog&lt;/i&gt; is almost certainly the biggest DVD news. A controversial indictment of violence and racism, Fuller’s adaptation of Romain Gary’s story was withheld from theatrical release in 1982 due to its subject matter and violence, which essentially killed Fuller’s career in the U.S. Now, after more than a quarter of a century, &lt;i&gt;White Dog&lt;/i&gt; is finally getting a home video release for the first time, in Fuller’s original “uncut” version. Criterion has included a handful of special features on this DVD, but really- isn’t the fact that the film is out there for everyone to see enough?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This week’s recent releases coming to DVD include: &lt;i&gt;The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian&lt;/i&gt; (Disney, also Blu-Ray), the second installment of the C.S. Lewis-penned fantasy series; James McAvoy and Angelina Jolie in &lt;i&gt;Wanted&lt;/i&gt; (Universal, also Blu-Ray); Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly’s sibling rivalry writ large in &lt;i&gt;Step Brothers&lt;/i&gt; (Sony, also Blu-Ray); Mulder and Scully’s return to the big screen in &lt;i&gt;The X-Files: I Want to Believe&lt;/i&gt; (Fox, also Blu-Ray); Ice Cube in &lt;i&gt;The Longshots&lt;/i&gt; (Weinstein Company), a film by Fred Durst; and &lt;i&gt;Bam Margera Presents: Where the #$&amp;amp;% Is Santa?&lt;/i&gt; (Warner, also Blu-Ray), a title I’d say speaks for itself.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Aside from &lt;i&gt;White Dog&lt;/i&gt;, the highlights of the week’s classics on DVD are: &lt;i&gt;The Day The Earth Stood Still&lt;/i&gt; Special Edition (Fox, also Blu-Ray), a tie-in with the upcoming remake, featuring numerous new extras; and &lt;i&gt;Casablanca&lt;/i&gt; Ultimate Collector’s Edition (Warner, also Blu-Ray), which is basically the same old edition in a snazzy new package.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Only one major TV on DVD release, but it’s a doozy: &lt;i&gt;Saturday Night Live: The Complete Fourth Season&lt;/i&gt; (Universal).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Finally, plenty of Blu-Ray only releases this week. There’s Mike Myers telling the same half dozen jokes again and again in &lt;i&gt;Austin Powers Collection&lt;/i&gt; (Warner)! The Christmas mayhem double feature of &lt;i&gt;Home Alone&lt;/i&gt; (Fox) and &lt;i&gt;Jingle All the Way&lt;/i&gt; (Fox)! A double dose of Luc Besson with &lt;i&gt;La Femme Nikita&lt;/i&gt; (Sony) and &lt;i&gt;Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc&lt;/i&gt; (Sony)! The first installment of the would-be &lt;i&gt;X-Files&lt;/i&gt; movie franchise, &lt;i&gt;The X-Files: Fight the Future&lt;/i&gt; (Fox), coincidentally released the same day as the DVD of the second movie! The Coen Brothers have visited some strange places with their movies, but the top of the weekend box office charts may be the most unexpected of all.  Yet there’s &lt;i&gt;Burn After Reading&lt;/i&gt;, edging out Tyler Perry’s latest grotesquerie for the top spot with $19.4 million.  I thought it was minor Coen myself, but that’s a discussion for another day.  The Perry faithful turned out for the odious &lt;i&gt;The Family That Preys&lt;/i&gt; to the tune of $18 million, and enough folks were curious to see De Niro and Pacino Together Again For The First Time to nudge &lt;i&gt;Righteous Kill&lt;/i&gt; into third place with $16.5 million.  Women did not turn out for &lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;The Women&lt;/span&gt;, which barely cracked the $10 million mark.

From the You’ve Gotta Be Shitting Me file comes news that another &lt;i&gt;XXX&lt;/i&gt; sequel is in the works.  Columbia Pictures is “in discussions with producer Joe Roth for a new version of &lt;i&gt;XXX&lt;/i&gt;, one that would bring back Vin Diesel as star and Rob Cohen as director.”  As you may recall, the last &lt;i&gt;XXX&lt;/i&gt; sequel actually starred Ice Cube, but apparently Diesel’s pricetag has gone down.  Then there’s this tidbit from &lt;a href="http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117992178.html?categoryid=1236&amp;amp;cs=1" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;i&gt;Variety&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/a&gt;: “Diesel also bowed out of a starring role in the first sequel to &lt;i&gt;The Fast and the Furious&lt;/i&gt; — &lt;i&gt;2 Fast 2 Furious&lt;/i&gt; — opting for a cameo in that pic. He skipped the third pic, &lt;i&gt;The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift&lt;/i&gt;, but will reteam with original co-star Paul Walker in the franchise’s fourth go-round, &lt;i&gt;Fast &amp;amp; Furious&lt;/i&gt;, which Universal will release June 12.”  If there’s a fifth movie, they’ll just call it &lt;i&gt;Fastious&lt;/i&gt;.

The &lt;i&gt;Kerosene Cowboys&lt;/i&gt; are set to ride for director Mario Van Peebles.  “Based on a novel by Randy Arrington, the tale follows the rough-riding and hard-living pilots of an elite Navy attack squadron,” says &lt;a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/film/news/e3iebfd8fe8494c12b2395527da9e30d216" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;i&gt;The Hollywood Reporter&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/a&gt;.  Cam Gigandet, Shane West and Rachael Leigh Cook are set to star.  I’ve never heard of two of those people, but I’m just passing the info along to those of you who have.

But in its own way, each is pretty indispensible. Maddin’s film is, like his entire body of work, indescribable to anyone who hasn’t already seen it, but for those who are on his wavelength, it’s magical. That Criterion has finally embraced this most movie-drunk of filmmakers is exciting enough. But they’ve also gathered half a dozen different narration tracks for the sake of variety, including narration by Isabella Rossellini, Laurie Anderson, Eli Wallach, and Maddin himself. In addition, there’s a new documentary on the director, plus two new short films by Maddin, made especially for this release. So yeah, good news.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But if anything, the release of Season 5 of &lt;i&gt;The Wire&lt;/i&gt; is even more of a cause for celebration. The groundbreaking, critically-acclaimed HBO series has been praised to the heavens in venues both classier and more authoritative than this one, so I’ll refrain from heaping still more effusive praise on a series that hardly needs it. All I can say is, if you haven’t experienced &lt;i&gt;The Wire&lt;/i&gt; yet, you’ve got some great times ahead of you. And if you have, you don’t need me to convince you to buy the final season on DVD.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This week’s recent releases coming to DVD include: Dennis Quaid and Ellen Page in &lt;i&gt;Smart People&lt;/i&gt; (Disney, also Blu-Ray); Stephen Chow’s cockeyed kids’ movie &lt;i&gt;CJ7&lt;/i&gt; (Sony, also Blu-Ray); and Val Kilmer and Stephen Dorff in &lt;i&gt;Felon&lt;/i&gt; (Sony, also Blu-Ray). Also, three DVDs by Lech Majewski: &lt;i&gt;The Garden of Earthly Delights&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;Glass Lips&lt;/i&gt;, and &lt;i&gt;The Gospel According to Harry&lt;/i&gt; (all Kino), the last of which features a young Viggo Mortensen.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In TV on DVD, this week brings &lt;i&gt;South Park Season 11&lt;/i&gt; (Paramount), &lt;i&gt;Prison Break Season 3&lt;/i&gt; (Fox, also Blu-Ray), and &lt;i&gt;Caroline in the City Season 1&lt;/i&gt; (Paramount).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Finally, in Blu-Ray only news, the week’s big release almost certainly has to be Sony’s “Action” Box Set, which includes Jean Claude Van Damme in &lt;i&gt;Maximum Risk&lt;/i&gt;, Steven Seagal in &lt;i&gt;Half Past Dead&lt;/i&gt;, Wesley Snipes in &lt;i&gt;7 Seconds&lt;/i&gt;, and Ice Cube in &lt;i&gt;xXx: State of the Union&lt;/i&gt;. I mean, come on- Van Damme, Seagal, and Snipes all in one box set? The 1993 version of me is stoked. Also this week: &lt;i&gt;The Doors&lt;/i&gt; (Lionsgate) and &lt;i&gt;Belly&lt;/i&gt; (Lionsgate), in case you were wondering.&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;img Our fearless – and quite possibly senseless – movie janitor is watching every movie on the IMDb Bottom 100 list.  Join us now for another installment of &lt;b&gt;Unwatchable.&lt;/b&gt;
&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
I’m not the world’s biggest fan of writer-director-cottage industry Tyler Perry.  I know he’s got a loyal following that will fill theaters every time he serves up his patented mix of sermonizing, self-help platitudes and ham-handed ensemble comedy, and I’m fine with that.  It just so happens he makes the sort of movies that are the exact opposite of anything I’d find entertaining.  But having said that, I would gladly sit through a triple bill of &lt;i&gt;Diary of a Mad Black Woman&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;Daddy’s Little Girls&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;Why Did I Get Married? &lt;/i&gt;if it meant I would never have to see &lt;i&gt;First Sunday &lt;/i&gt;again.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
You know Perry has truly arrived when the cheap imitations of his work start showing up, and that’s what we have here, despite an ad campaign designed to trick the slow-witted into thinking &lt;i&gt;First Sunday&lt;/i&gt; is the latest installment in Ice Cube’s &lt;i&gt;Friday&lt;/i&gt; series.  In a way, that’s not fair to writer-director David E. Talbert, whose work in African-American theater on such plays as &lt;i&gt;The Fabric of a Man&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;He Say…She Say…But What Does GOD Say? &lt;/i&gt;actually predates Perry’s career.  But it’s clear that the success of Perry’s movies opened the door for more of these inspirational urban comedies.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Mr. Cube (as the &lt;i&gt;New York Times&lt;/i&gt; calls him) and Tracy Morgan play two goofballs from the Baltimore ’hood who can’t seem to hold down a job or stay out of trouble with the law.  The first few scenes are so rushed and technically inept that it’s hard to be sure, but it appears that Cube and Morgan get involved in a scam to sell stolen wheelchairs on behalf of some Jamaican gangsters, then get caught and sentenced to 5000 hours of community service.  (Even Bubbles from &lt;i&gt;The Wire&lt;/i&gt; wouldn’t bother with these jackasses.)    This is the last straw for Cube’s baby-momma Omunique (Regina Hall).  Unless the Ice Man comes up with $17,000 to finance her beauty shop, she’s moving to Atlanta with their son.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
There’s only one obvious solution to this dilemma, which is, of course, to rob a church.  Unfortunately, Cube and Morgan undertake this task while a meeting is in progress, and soon find themselves holding pews full of kindly church ladies hostage.  At this point, lame slapstick comedy is replaced by preachy tedium as the befuddled pastor (Chi McBride) and his flock go to work on these two miscreants.  The only point of interest is the flamboyant choir director played by Katt Williams, who walks a fine line between mincing gay stereotype and recently arrived space alien.  Another way to differentiate Talbert’s film from the&lt;i&gt; Friday&lt;/i&gt; series: the chances of a &lt;i&gt;Next Sunday&lt;/i&gt; would appear remote.

Who will prevail? Read on…&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;DVD of the Week:&lt;/b&gt; No one does musical biography like Todd Haynes. This should have been clear from his previous films &lt;i&gt;Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;Velvet Goldmine&lt;/i&gt;, and his latest film, &lt;i&gt;I’m Not There&lt;/i&gt;, lays any remaining doubts to rest. But then, when one is making a movie about Bob Dylan, how could it possibly fit into a neat little package? The Weinstein Company’s two-disc DVD of the film contains a wide variety of features, including a commentary track with Haynes, two deleted scenes, some audition tapes, a handful of documentaries, and a tribute to Heath Ledger. But most of all, there’s the film itself- &lt;i&gt;I’m Not There&lt;/i&gt; is sometimes wondrous, sometimes frustrating, but always worthy of its subject, and this DVD should find a place in the collections of cinephiles and Dylan fans alike.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Alas, the other new arrivals on DVD aren’t nearly that noteworthy, sometimes aggressively counteracting the awesomeness of &lt;i&gt;I’m Not There&lt;/i&gt; with their wholesale suckitude. More typical of this week’s crop is the universally detested &lt;i&gt;The Hottie and the Nottie&lt;/i&gt; (Genius Products- how’s that for irony?), the latest attempt by its star- who I refuse to name here- to achieve total media domination. Also this week: Ice Cube and Tracy Jordan Morgan in &lt;i&gt;First Sunday&lt;/i&gt; (Sony, also Blu-Ray); Hilary Swank in &lt;i&gt;P.S. I Love You&lt;/i&gt; (Warner, also Blu-Ray); the long-awaited Eva Longoria Parker vehicle &lt;i&gt;Over Her Dead Body&lt;/i&gt; (New Line); and 2006 TIFF Audience Award Winner &lt;i&gt;Bella&lt;/i&gt; (Lions Gate). Also, this week brings the release of the heartwarming family-themed &lt;i&gt;vagina dentata&lt;/i&gt; comedy &lt;i&gt;Teeth&lt;/i&gt;, as well as Sony’s first step into the Bollywood market, &lt;i&gt;Saawariya&lt;/i&gt; (also Blu-Ray). But while a few of these are worth seeing, I’d have to say this was probably the easiest week to pick a DVD of the Week in quite a while.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A few new editions of some already-on-DVD titles will be hitting stores this week as well, including: &lt;i&gt;The Bridges of Madison County Deluxe Edition&lt;/i&gt; (Warner); &lt;i&gt;Serial Mom Collector’s Edition&lt;/i&gt; (Focus); and a two-disc special edition of &lt;i&gt;Twister&lt;/i&gt; (Warner, also Blu-Ray). Finally, this week’s sole Blu-Ray only release is the 2004 remake of &lt;i&gt;Shall We Dance?&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Sorry folks, that’s all I’ve got. Next week promises to bring more DVD goodness. &lt;p&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/02/01-07/fisburne1.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/02/01-07/fisburne1.jpg" align="right" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;February is Black History Month, and since we enjoyed combing through the stacks in preparation for &lt;a class="" href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2008/01/30/that-guy-yaphet-kotto.aspx"&gt;last week&amp;#39;s featured That Guy!, Yaphet Kotto&lt;/a&gt;, we figured we&amp;#39;d continue on in that vein and take a look at some of Hollywood&amp;#39;s finest African-American character actors. We&amp;#39;ve discussed before how it&amp;#39;s much harder for a woman to make a reputation playing character roles; actresses tend to be valued more for their looks than their acting skills, and women who aren&amp;#39;t traditionally beautiful have far fewer opportunities to build a career based on their chops and personalities than do men who aren&amp;#39;t conventionally handsome. Similarly, it may actually be easier for African-Americans to become character actors, for no other reason than for a very long time, leading man roles were generally denied to them. With his commanding demeanor, strong and handsome face and forceful personality, there&amp;#39;s no reason that Larry Fishburne shouldn&amp;#39;t have become one of Hollywood&amp;#39;s biggest stars, and for a brief period in the early 1990s, it seemed like he would be — but for various reasons, it became clear that even at that late date, the movie business had only one opening for Serious Black Superstar, and it was already being filled by Denzel Washington. (It still is, for that matter.) So Fishburne — a rare black child star who became an even rarer black actor who never fell into stereotypical action or comedy roles — had to settle for nabbing some of the highest-profile second-banana roles available. Fishburne has always been a remarkably gifted actor, even as a child, and despite often being cast as a militant, a prophet, or some other variety of visionary, he&amp;#39;s willing to take the piss on occasion (witness his almost satirically self-important voicing of the Silver Surfer in the recent &lt;i&gt;Fantastic Four&lt;/i&gt; sequel), and is actually a lot more fun in light comic roles than anyone gives him credit for, as he showed when he played Cowboy Curtis on &lt;i&gt;Pee Wee&amp;#39;s Playhouse&lt;/i&gt;. Still not yet fifty years old, Fishburne has a lot of good roles ahead of him, if he doesn&amp;#39;t give up acting altogether and move into writing, directing or producing — all areas at which he&amp;#39;s shown talent. And if he never became America&amp;#39;s next black superstar, he did get to marry the luscious Gina Torres, and that ain&amp;#39;t bad as a second prize.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Where to see Laurence Fishburne at his best:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt;APOCALYPSE NOW &lt;/i&gt;(1979)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;It wasn&amp;#39;t his first movie — the former child star had already impressed audiences with his teenage turn in &lt;i&gt;Cornbread, Earl and Me&lt;/i&gt; — but Francis Ford Coppola&amp;#39;s Vietnam nightmare was certainly the film that put young Laurence Fishburne on the map. As Mr. Clean, he gives the purest and most human performance in the movie, and his death is the most touching and tragic. It&amp;#39;s all the more astonishing that Larry (as he called himself at the time) was only fourteen years old when filming began, having fudged his age to get the part. Of course, the filming of &lt;i&gt;Apocalypse Now&lt;/i&gt; took so long, he was approximately thirty-eight years old when it wrapped. &lt;/font&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;BOYZ N THE HOOD&lt;/i&gt; (1991)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This was the movie that seemed to predict superstardom for Fishburne; so successful and influential was it at the time of its release that it&amp;#39;s also the film that inspired him to start going by Laurence instead of Larry. John Singleton&amp;#39;s directorial debut, &lt;i&gt;Boyz N the Hood&lt;/i&gt; is one of the first, and undoubtedly the best, of a mini-wave of ghetto-realist gangsta films, and despite heavy competition from pre-living-joke-status Cuba Gooding and Ice Cube (and Angela Bassett, with whom he would later shine as Ike Turner in &lt;i&gt;What&amp;#39;s Love Got to Do With It?&lt;/i&gt;), Fishburne anchors the cast as the morally complex, conflicted Furious Styles. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/02/01-07/fishburne2.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/02/01-07/fishburne2.jpg" align="left" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/font&gt; &lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;THE MATRIX&lt;/i&gt; (1999) &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/p&gt;The Wachowski Brothers&amp;#39; high-toned blend of wire-fu, gunplay and slapdash philosophy holds up less well with each year that passes by. But at the time of its release, it perfectly synthesized a number of elements of the &lt;i&gt;zeitgeist&lt;/i&gt; into an action movie that, if it wasn&amp;#39;t as smart as it thought it was, at least wasn&amp;#39;t dumb. Fishburne landed the role of a lifetime as the mystical hacker Morpheus, and it&amp;#39;s a testament to his acting skills and more or less permanent sense of gravitas that he managed to avoid magical Negritude in a role that pretty much defines the magical Negro. Strangely enough, though, movie studios and filmgoers alike are a tad more diffident when it comes to monsters that have a slight possiblilty of being real. Vampires, zombies, wolfmen, and whatever the hell Gamera was supposed to be? Sure, we&amp;#39;ll take whatever you got. But when was the last time you saw a bunch of lithe, promiscuous teenagers menaced by a bunyip? What was the last movie that featured a small town in the middle of nowhere being attacked by a rampaging Cornish Owl-Man? Paramount is hoping, with the Friday release of Fred Wolf&amp;#39;s shaggy Sasquatch story &lt;i&gt;Strange Wilderness&lt;/i&gt;, that audiences will evince an interest in Bigfoot unseen since the glory days of the Six Million Dollar Man. But as we&amp;#39;ll see, the history of movies based on so-called &amp;quot;cryptids&amp;quot; — creatures or animals widely thought to be legends, but believed by some researchers to be real — is dismal enough that the studio has as much chance of actually uncovering the Loch Ness Monster than turning a profit off of this dud-in-the-offing. &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/02/01-07/notd.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/02/01-07/notd.jpg" align="right" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;NIGHT OF THE DEMON &lt;/i&gt;(1980)&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;An almost-forgotten, and rightfully so, horror cheapie from the dawn of the slasher era, &lt;i&gt;Night of the Demon&lt;/i&gt; does for Bigfoot what Jason Voorhees did for big-screen murderers, or at least tries to. Big-screen Bigfeet are usually portrayed as either gentle giants or, at worst, misunderstood animals, but in this null-budget exploitation number, he&amp;#39;s more like a bloodthirsty devil on a rampage, Freddy Kreuger without the stylish hat and sweater combo. The movie&amp;#39;s Sasquatch romps all over the Pacific Northwest, terrorizing anthropology students, yanking the junk off of an unfortunate hillbilly, and having his wicked way with local farmer&amp;#39;s daughters. The high, or low, point of the flick comes in a flashback sequence: the innocent young lady who found herself at the receiving end of unwelcome advances from Bigfoot decides, for some reason, to bear its offspring (birthing the child of a monstrous rape apparently being less shameful than an abortion), until her overbearing dad decides to force her to kill the Bigfoot baby! A hallucinatorily bad movie sure to be the final word in, as the poster copy put it, &amp;quot;cross-breedin&amp;#39; Bigfoot&amp;quot;.&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;TWILIGHT ZONE: THE MOVIE &lt;/i&gt;(1983)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Despite the fact that multiple reports of gremlins, wing-monsters and foo fighters by American flyers in WWII were all almost certainly the result of ordinary mechanical failure, combat fatigue, or smuggling a bottle of Old Crow into the cockpit, the Army took them seriously enough to launch a legitimate investigation, and by the 1960s, the beasties were entrenched enough in popular culture to inspire a memorable episode of &lt;i&gt;The Twilight Zone&lt;/i&gt;. When a movie adaptation rolled around some twenty years later, a remake of this episode was arguably its high point, thanks largely to a wildly over-the-top, and yet somehow perfectly suitable, lead performance by John Lithgow. (Amusingly enough, almost twenty years after &lt;i&gt;that&lt;/i&gt;, William Shatner — who&amp;#39;d played the gremlin&amp;#39;s victim in the original TV version — was paired up with Lithgow on his own show, &lt;i&gt;3rd Rock from the Sun&lt;/i&gt;, and the two baked hams overacted like there was no tomorrow in a sly inside gag about their shared past.) Nowadays, the movie is remembered largely for the disastrous accident that took the lives of several crew members, and given John Landis&amp;#39; rather contemptible behavior at a subsequent trial for negligence, it&amp;#39;s surprising he didn&amp;#39;t try to blame the helicopter crash on an invisible monster only he could see.&lt;/font&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;SPLASH &lt;/i&gt;(1984)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Yes, folks, there are those in the cryptozoological community — and apparently there is one — who believe that mermaids are really real, and not just the product of a dugong and a very lonely, very drunk sailor coming into contact with one another. It is to them and to you that we recommend a fresh viewing of this charming &amp;#39;80s comedy. It&amp;#39;s long been an almost invisible part of the cultural landscape; few people even think about it these days. But &lt;i&gt;Splash&lt;/i&gt; is in fact a very fine comedy of its day, not boisterous or insulting like the majority of Eighties comedies that reached its level of success. And it also functions quite well as a time capsule: it brings us a pre-iconic Tom Hanks, a pre-crazy-recluse Darryl Hannah, a pre-self-important Ron Howard, and a pre-death John Candy in one of his most appealing roles — all wrapped up in a genuinely funny, if slight, Bruce Jay Friedman screenplay. There&amp;#39;s only five dugongs in captivity, but DVDs of &lt;i&gt;Splash &lt;/i&gt;can be found anywhere. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/02/01-07/anaconda.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/02/01-07/anaconda.jpg" align="left" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;ANACONDA&lt;/i&gt; (1997)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;Despite an incredibly dismal record of investigations into various Nessies, Jersey Devils and Bigfeet, the cryptozoologists have been right exactly once: the giant squid. Long considered a myth, a dead &lt;i&gt;Architeuthis&lt;/i&gt; washed up in New Zealand in the 1870s, and in 2004, scientists finally captured living speciments on film. Many believe that if the fringe biology crowd is going to score another stopped-clock victory, it will be with the discovery of gigantic specimens of the already huge constrictor snakes known as anaconda, and when that day comes, perhaps this movie will be viewed as eerily prophetic instead of an embarrassingly hokey, campy creature feature with a mind-blowingly unrealistic rubber snake as its villain. &lt;i&gt;Anaconda &lt;/i&gt;isn&amp;#39;t entirely unsalvageable; Jon Voight hams it up deliciously as a great white hunter, Ice Cube is entertaining in full-on Private Hudson mode as a doomed photographer, and there are many fine shots of Jennifer Lopez&amp;#39; structurally pleasing hiney. However, the script is an utter dud, the special effects look like they were done by a dull fifteen-year-old, and the plot makes &lt;i&gt;The Mothman Prophecies&lt;/i&gt; look brilliant by comparison.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES &lt;/i&gt;(2002)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When the history of Richard Gere&amp;#39;s movie career is written, it&amp;#39;s unlikely that this will be one of its most glorious moments. It&amp;#39;s hard to imagine a worse title than &lt;i&gt;The Mothman Prophecies&lt;/i&gt;, and if the movie isn&amp;#39;t quite as terrible as the title promises, it sure as hell ain&amp;#39;t great, either. Supposedly based on true events, the flick is about as good as you might expect from a movie prefaced by such a claim; back in the 1970s, they used to make thousands of flicks like this loopy would-be chiller about a West Virginia town haunted by mysterious visions of the future and visitations by a rubbery, bug-winged extraterrestrial something-or-other, and they were all pretty bad, albeit in a different way. &lt;i&gt;The Mothman Prophecies&lt;/i&gt; is plenty expensive as opposed to a cheap filmed-in-a-weekend exploitation flick, and it tries for a post-modern moody ambience instead of pure shock, but it&amp;#39;s still pretty dire. Talbert&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;First Sunday&lt;/i&gt;, which should represent the final nail in a coffin which contains the mouldering remains of Ice Cube&amp;#39;s reputation as an American nightmare.&amp;nbsp; Younger Screengrab readers may not realize this, but Cube was once a rapper who so terrified white America that they put him on the cover of national news magazines, where he sneered and scowled his way right into your scaredy-bones.&amp;nbsp; Now he just makes comedies that Steve Martin is too busy to bother with.&amp;nbsp; Anyway, Talbert is being claimed as the new Tyler Perry, which, depending on your inclinations, is either a refreshing change or a dire threat.&amp;nbsp; We were sort of hoping that &lt;i&gt;First Sunday&lt;/i&gt; would function as a pseudo-sequel to the &lt;i&gt;Friday&lt;/i&gt; films and would, at the very least, treat us to the spectacle of Cube and Katt Williams having to sit through a really long, dull sermon while stoned out of their gourds, which is an experience we&amp;#39;ve all had at one time or another.&amp;nbsp; Unfortunately, it&amp;#39;s no such thing, so here&amp;#39;s some other movies you can look forward to after this endless Sunday is over.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;STORMY MONDAY&lt;/i&gt; (1988)&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/01/08-15/stormymonday.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/01/08-15/stormymonday.jpg" align="right" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;Back before Mike Figgis hit it big, he directed this quirky little neo-noir thriller.&amp;nbsp; It hasn&amp;#39;t proven to be one of his lasting legacies as a filmmaker; for everything it does right, it goofs up in some profound way that nearly sinks it — its plot is pretty thin even by the standards of such potboilers, and two fine lead performances by British actors (Sting and a young Sean Bean) are clumsily countered by two dopey ones by American actors (an ultra-hammy Tommy Lee Jones and Melanie Griffith, clearly letting the clock run down on her fifteen minutes of fame).&amp;nbsp; That said, it&amp;#39;s worth watching for two reasons:&amp;nbsp; first, it gives you an important stepping point in the development of Figgis&amp;#39; career, should you be interested in pursuing such a thing; and second, it&amp;#39;s crazily gorgeous to look at.&amp;nbsp; It features some nearly perfect cinematography by the estimable Roger Deakins, all rain-slicked streets and cheap neon and hazes of cigarette smoke and shadows that people fall into and never emerge.&amp;nbsp; It&amp;#39;s all surface; you&amp;#39;ll find no depth here no matter how hard you look.&amp;nbsp; But if surface is all you&amp;#39;re looking for, you could do a lot worse than &lt;em&gt;Stormy Monday&lt;/em&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;IF IT&amp;#39;S TUESDAY THIS MUST BE BELGIUM&lt;/i&gt; (1969)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Movies like this must have seemed like such a good idea in the Sixties.&amp;nbsp; Get an all-star cast, or at least as much of an all-star cast as you can afford. Have them rampage around a picturesque collection of back-lot set pieces mixed with stock footage.&amp;nbsp; Stick Norman Fell in there looking pasty and irritated, then stick an unwieldy, ridiculous title on the thing and watch the money roll in.&amp;nbsp; It&amp;#39;s not quite clear exactly when Americans lost their patience for this particular brand of witless comedy, but I think it was right around the time this movie came out, which just so happened to coincide with the time at which it became acceptable to talk about smoking marijuana.&amp;nbsp; Still, it&amp;#39;s not entirely without its charm; Suzanne Pleshette makes a vivacious lead, Sandy Baron has some amusing scenes, Murray Hamilton reminds us that he once existed, and you get a fun look at what Hollywood thought of Ian McShane before it discovered how good he was at cussing like a sailor who&amp;#39;s just had an anchor drop on his foot.&amp;nbsp; It plays even better if you pretend that it was made in 1959 instead of 1969.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/01/08-15/bigwednesday.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/01/08-15/bigwednesday.jpg" align="left" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;BIG WEDNESDAY&lt;/i&gt; (1978)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Highly influenced by &lt;i&gt;The Endless Summer&lt;/i&gt; and a rash of other surfing documentaries that had hit the screens in the 1960s, &lt;i&gt;Big Wednesday&lt;/i&gt; takes a similar visual approach and a comparable &amp;#39;surfing as metaphor for nascent mystics communing with nature &amp;#39; storyline, but wraps it all up in a big mushy box of coming-of-age drama by writer/director John Milius, who had not yet discovered that the one thing he loved even more than surfing was killing communists.&amp;nbsp; Based loosely on his own southern California teenhood, &lt;i&gt;Big Wednesday&lt;/i&gt; is actually a pretty accomplished film for what it is, but it really soars on the strength of what today seems like an incredibly goofball cast:&amp;nbsp; shirtless, bronzed, toned young beachcombers portrayed by...future acid casualty Gary Busey, future heroin junkie Jan-Michael Vincent, and future &lt;i&gt;Greatest American Hero&lt;/i&gt; William Katt.&amp;nbsp; Patti D&amp;#39;Arbanville wanders through there as well, as does a woefully out-of-place Joe Spinnell as Busey&amp;#39;s shrink.&amp;nbsp; All in all, not a bad little movie, but one that&amp;#39;s highly improved if you&amp;#39;re in a Gary Busey state of mind when you watch it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;THURSDAY AFTERNOON&lt;/i&gt; (1984)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Right around the time that MTV was robbing us all of our ability to process visual information that didn&amp;#39;t come with cuts every fifteen seconds, avant-garde composer, musician, and filmmaker Brian Eno offered a refreshing, if highly unusual, tonic in the form of &lt;i&gt;Thursday Afternoon&lt;/i&gt;.&amp;nbsp; Essentially a series of eight nearly motionless &amp;quot;video paintings&amp;quot;, &lt;i&gt;Thursday Afternoon &lt;/i&gt;was meant to be viewed in a vertical format; the video packaging actually instructed viewers to upend their television sets.&amp;nbsp; Whether anyone actually did that or not, the video was an interesting exercise in changing the video shorthand that accompanies music on screen.&amp;nbsp; Accompanied by music that is highly suggestive of his &amp;#39;ambient&amp;#39; period circa &lt;i&gt;Music for Airports&lt;/i&gt;, the videos bring us nearly static images (of nature scenes, shifting electronic displays, and fashion model Christine Alicino, also the film&amp;#39;s cinematographer), and manage to accomplish visually precisely the effect that Eno was going after musically with that ambient work.&amp;nbsp; It may not be the most compelling thing ever set to video, but it&amp;#39;s a lot better conversation-starter than your iTunes Visualizer at a party.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER&lt;/i&gt; (1977)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;So iconic is John Badham&amp;#39;s 1977 disco document that it&amp;#39;s easy to overlook what a colossal impact it made at the time it was released.&amp;nbsp; John Travolta became such a huge star following its box-office-busting run that his fall from grace seemed inevitable and his comeback seemed incredible; with the benefit of hindsight, one might be forgiven for thinking he was the only person in the movie as none of the other actors went on to even remotely the same level of fame.&amp;nbsp; Badham, likewise, never made a film as good as this, or as successful.&amp;nbsp; Endlessly parodied, riffed on and exploited, it&amp;#39;s the kind of movie that even if you&amp;#39;ve never seen it, you feel like you&amp;#39;ve seen it.&amp;nbsp; It really went off the rails early on; it&amp;#39;s impossible to guess from the final product, but it was actually based on an edgy, That’s the picture Randy Newman painted in his 1977 song “Baltimore,” and it hasn’t gotten much better for Charm City since then – at least, not as far as its portrayal in the popular culture is concerned.  Nowadays the city is best known as the setting of &lt;i&gt;The Wire&lt;/i&gt;, this week’s season premiere of which was greeted with the customary round of “greatest TV show ever” reviews, as well as the usual grumbling from residents that the program tends not to portray their home as a nice place to visit, live or even think about.

To add insult to injury, the wasteland that is the January movie release schedule today serves up the execrable &lt;a href="http://www.nervepop.com/filmlounge/review/firstsunday/index.aspx" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;i&gt;First Sunday&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/a&gt;, a Tyler Perry knockoff starring Ice Cube and Tracy Morgan as a couple of B-more bad boys who decide to rob a church stocked with dismaying stereotypes.  
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
It’s not so much that Baltimore has never been treated right by the movies – it’s that it’s rarely been treated at all.  If Barry Levinson and John Waters had gone into accounting or narcotics distribution, we might never have seen the city on the screen, but instead they have both used Baltimore as their respective canvases, to very different effect.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Levinson’s Baltimore is primarily nostalgic and gentle; there’s not a whole lot of slingin’ on the corners of Liberty Heights or Avalon.  Instead, it’s “a little place where people gather to enjoy the banquet of life”:

That’s a little more Chamber of Commerce friendly than &lt;i&gt;The Wire&lt;/i&gt;, and although Levinson doesn’t shy away from the sticky issue of race relations in his hometown, it’s hard to imagine Marlo or Snoop finding much to identify with in this clip from &lt;i&gt;Liberty Heights&lt;/i&gt;:

John Waters also took a nostalgic look at Baltimore’s racial divide in &lt;i&gt;Hairspray&lt;/i&gt;, but that’s about the only point of comparison between the two directors’ depictions of the city.  Not many things could scare the corner boys of &lt;i&gt;The Wire&lt;/i&gt;, but here’s a sight that could do it:

So you can see why it’s been hard for the good citizens of Baltimore to hold onto their dignity when all the world thinks their city is nothing but a teeming cesspool of run-down row houses, drug dealers and oversized drag clowns with slabs of meat clenched between their thighs. But cheer up, Baltimore! Somebody loves you:
