Barring a last minute call from the governor, this is the end of the line for Unwatchable here at the Screengrab.  We made it two-thirds of the way through the 100 worst movies ever made…but is there any hope of finishing this very important project? The answer may surprise you.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Ladies and gentlemen, Unwatchable lives!  Well, sort of.  I am barely proud…er, I mean &lt;i&gt;very&lt;/i&gt; proud to announce the launch of &lt;a href="http://unwatchable.wordpress.com/" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;b&gt;Unwatchable: The Blog&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/a&gt;.  As soon as I’ve loaded all the links to the existing Unwatchable posts here at the Screengrab, I will resume the countdown at this new blog.  But I need your help!  Now that Nerve is cutting off the funding for this worthy endeavor, I am reduced to begging you, the Unwatchable reader, for the support to see it through to the bitter end.   Sure, I’d do it for free if I could, but these psychiatry bills aren’t going to pay themselves. There’s still some unfinished business here at the Screengrab, however, so let’s get right to &lt;i&gt;Glitter&lt;/i&gt;, the 2001 musical starring Mariah Carey, who won a Worst Actress Razzie for her performance as fictitious diva Billie Frank.  Billie’s rags to riches story is a familiar one, but given the story’s setting in the go-go New York of the ‘80s (not to mention the movie’s reputation as a camp classic), I had reason to hope for some Velveeta-smooth cheesy goodness.  Unfortunately, &lt;i&gt;Glitter&lt;/i&gt; is more dreary than gooey, and nobody likes dreary cheese.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Billie was raised by her alcoholic, torch-singing mother, until mama had one drink too many and Billie had to go live at the orphanage.  At least it was a fun orphanage where Billie met Louise and Roxanne, still her best pals years later when Billie is dancing in a club and catches the eye of would-be music mogul Timothy Walker (Terrence Howard).  Walker hires the trio as background vocalists and dancers for his diva project Sylk (Padme Lakshmi), but when he gets a load of Billie’s superior pipes, he turns the volume down on the atrocious lead vocals and faster than you can say Milli Vanilli, Billie’s voice is coming out of Sylk’s mouth.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
The ruse doesn’t last long, and soon Billie is discovered by up-and-coming DJ/producer Dice (Max Beesley), who promises Walker $100,000 in exchange for the rights to Billie’s solo career.  Backed by Dice’s Casio beats, Billie is soon on her way to superstardom and falling in love with her producer. As played by British-born Beesley, Dice has to rank among the top five worst romantic leads in motion picture history.  He’s a sleazy mook in a wife-beater, gold chains and a Ratso Rizzo accent, but we’re supposed to think he’s a tortured artistic soul because he has a marimba in his apartment.  Come on, that’s the oldest trick in the book!

Dice never does get around to paying off Walker, which leads to his tragic end just as Billie is mounting the Madison Square Garden stage for the biggest concert of her career.  She stops the show for a big, emotional speech about never taking your loved ones for granted, and I suppose this is the moment that secured the Razzie for her.  It’s true that she can’t act, but neither could Prince in P&lt;i&gt;urple Rain&lt;/i&gt;.  He had star quality, though, and you couldn’t take your eyes off him, but the same can’t be said for Carey here.  In fact, when her two satellites played by Da Brat and Tia Texada are onscreen, they out-charisma her to such a degree that Carey seems to vanish from the screen…except when she’s decked out in her satin shorts/baseball cap/pigtails ensemble.  Then you sort of stare at her like she’s E.T. or something.

Plotinsky thinks he&amp;#39;s picked up on &lt;a href="http://www.city-journal.org/2009/19_1_urb-science-fiction.html"&gt;some recent tendencies in science fiction.&lt;/a&gt;&lt;a&gt;&lt;/a&gt; &amp;quot;
There is a young man, different from other young men. Ancient prophecies foretell his coming, and he performs miraculous feats. Eventually, confronted by his enemies, he must sacrifice his own life—an act that saves mankind from calamity—but in a mystery as great as that of his origin, he is reborn, to preside in glory over a world redeemed. Tell this story to one of the world’s 2 billion Christians, and he’ll recognize it instantly. Tell it to a science-fiction and fantasy fan, and he’ll ask why you’re making minor alterations to the plot of &lt;i&gt;The Matrix&lt;/i&gt; or &lt;i&gt;Superman Returns&lt;/i&gt;.&amp;quot;
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
The evidence is pretty much right there on the surface, and not just in such moments as the one early in &lt;i&gt;The Matrix&lt;/i&gt; where someone tells a not-yet enlightened Keanu Reeves, “You’re my savior, man, my own personal Jesus Christ,” or the later one where Laurence Fishburne&amp;#39;s Morpheus tells Reeve&amp;#39;s Neo, “Like everyone else, you were born into bondage.” Morpheus also tells Neo, “When the Matrix was first built, there was a man born inside who had the ability to change whatever he wanted, to remake the Matrix as he saw fit. It was he who freed the first of us, taught us the truth. . . . After he died, the Oracle prophesied his return—that his coming would hail the destruction of the Matrix, end the war, bring freedom to our people.” As Plotinsky notes, &amp;quot;We don’t know [whether Neo is the One] until near the movie’s end, when a comrade-in-arms betrays Neo and Morpheus. Neo chooses to save Morpheus’s life by surrendering his own. The machines kill him—but then he mysteriously returns to life and obliterates his enemies, to the grand accompaniment of trumpets and a choir...It takes no great perception to recognize how closely this plot tracks the basic Christian narrative, though it conflates the Passion with the End Days, adding the betrayal of a Judas to a messianic Second Coming.&amp;quot; 
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
As for &amp;quot;Bryan Singer’s underrated &lt;i&gt;Superman Returns&lt;/i&gt; (2006) sought to answer an age-old question: Does humanity need gods? Lex Luthor, Superman’s eternal nemesis, answers early on. After Luthor compares himself to Prometheus, an accomplice retorts: &amp;#39;Sounds great, Lex, but you’re not a god.&amp;#39; &amp;#39;Gods are selfish beings who fly around in little red capes and don’t share their power with mankind,&amp;#39; Luthor snarls. He’s in agreement with Lois Lane, who has won a Pulitzer for an op-ed titled &amp;#39;Why the World Doesn’t Need Superman.&amp;#39;&amp;quot; When Superman returns, he proves both his archenemy and his old flame (and mother of his son) wrong: he selflessly saves the world, after which he &amp;quot;remains in a coma until his son...restores him to life. He leaves his hospital room empty until a nurse discovers it, just as Mary and Mary Magdalene find Jesus’s empty tomb.&amp;quot;
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
It may be possible to nod appreciatively at all this and still have doubts about whether sci-fi stories are automatically enriched if they mirror religious mythologies. The Christ story parallels underlying the &lt;i&gt;Matrix&lt;/i&gt; trilogy definitely got heavier and more explicit as the movies crashed into their second and third installments, and whether this is coincidental or not, there are plenty of people who think that the movies themselves also got progressively worse. There may be even more people who would argue that any position that depends on including the terms &amp;quot;underrated&amp;quot; and &amp;quot;&lt;i&gt;Superman Returns&lt;/i&gt;&amp;quot; in the same sentence has to be a non-starter. To his credit, Plotinsky readily acknowledges that when, &amp;quot;As the world knows to its sorrow, [George] Lucas revived the &lt;i&gt;Star Wars&lt;/i&gt; franchise in 1999 with &lt;i&gt;The Phantom Menace&lt;/i&gt;,&amp;quot; any inclination to downplay the religious-mystical aspects of the earlier films, or treat them playfully, were long gone, and the movies suffered because of it: &amp;quot;...where the original movie never deified Luke, &lt;i&gt;The Phantom Menace&lt;/i&gt; describes Anakin—the future Darth Vader, Luke’s father—in terms so messianic as to make Neo blush, repeatedly calling him &amp;#39;the Chosen One.&amp;#39; The source of the term is in Luke—the Evangelist, that is—where Jewish leaders say of the soon-to-be-crucified Jesus: &amp;#39;Let him save himself if he is the Messiah of God, his chosen one!&amp;#39; The movie is fuzzy about who exactly has done the choosing, however—a failure doubtless rooted in Lucas’s carelessness with plots.&amp;quot;
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Plotinsky makes a case that religious themes, which he also detects in &lt;i&gt;The Terminator, E.T.&lt;/i&gt;, and &lt;i&gt;I Am Legend&lt;/i&gt;, jumped to the front of sci-fi creators&amp;#39; minds as the Cold War receded and geopolitics, which had once fueled the &lt;i&gt;Star Trek&lt;/i&gt; series, became too confusing and gray for easy metaphorical consumption. Certainly it was a bleak day for the &lt;i&gt;Star Trek&lt;/i&gt; franchise when Earthlings and Klingons learned to just get along. Incidentally, if there&amp;#39;s anything to all this, might it not be true that &lt;i&gt;The Terminator&lt;/i&gt;, with its save-the-unborn-savior plot and its very-&amp;#39;80s nuclear-terror tremors, is a key transitional work, about a messiah coming to save us from the bomb? (I just thought I&amp;#39;d drop that in here; I&amp;#39;m sure not trying to suggest that Plotinsky&amp;#39;s article needed to be any longer.) In any case, we may have already seen things start to shift back: the recently completed &lt;i&gt;Battlestar Galactica&lt;/i&gt; series invoked God and gods and religious prophecy left and right, but in the context of an allegory about 9/11 and the development of post-9/11 morality. Will the new &lt;i&gt;Star Trek&lt;/i&gt; movie mark a full return to the thrilling days of intergalactic secular warfare involving aliens with growly accents and exotic facial hair? It does not speak well for you. Your timing was exquisite. You signed a new contract, waited until days after the newspaper had paid for your trip to Beijing at great cost, and then resigned with a two-word e-mail: ‘I quit.’ You saved your explanation for a local television station.  As someone who was working here for 24 years before you arrived, I think you owed us more than that. You owed us decency. The fact that you saved your attack for TV only completes our portrait of you as a rat…On your way out, don&amp;#39;t let the door bang you on the ass.”

Are you a cinephile or a cinemaniac?  Do you even know the difference?  &lt;a href="http://www.davidbordwell.net/blog/?p=2662" target="_blank"&gt;David Bordwell&lt;/a&gt; thinks he does.  “What is cinephilia? Literally, the love of film. But everybody likes, even loves film, no? The term &amp;#39;cinephilia&amp;#39; connotes an overwhelming passion for film, even an obsession about it. And not just particular films. I meet civilians all the time who are devoted to their favorites—&lt;i&gt;The Godfather, The Princess Bride, The Matrix&lt;/i&gt;. But they’re not cinephiles. So is it just a matter of quantity? Is it just that the cinephile enjoys a great many movies? Partly, but there’s still more to it.  The cinephile displays symptoms of cinemania, as chronicled in the film of the same name…But I do see differences. For one thing, most cinemaniacs like only certain sorts of movies—usually American, often silent, sometimes foreign, seldom documentaries. Do cinemaniacs line up for Brakhage or Frederick Wiseman? My sense is not.  Cinephiles by contrast tend to be ecumenical. Indeed, many take pride in the intergalactic breadth of their tastes. Look at any smart critic’s ten-best lists. You’ll usually see an eclectic mix of arthouse, pop, and experimental, including one or two titles you have never heard of. Obscurity is important; a cinephile is a connoisseur.”

Guest poster Aaron Aradillas looks back at the box office charts from 25 years ago at &lt;a href="http://somecamerunning.typepad.com/some_came_running/2008/08/25-year-agothis.html" target="_blank"&gt;Some Came Running&lt;/a&gt;.  Do you remember the number one movie from this week in 1983?  “&lt;i&gt;Easy Money&lt;/i&gt; was Rodney Dangerfield&amp;#39;s follow-up to &lt;i&gt;Caddyshack&lt;/i&gt;. It was pretty obvious that Rodney could carry a movie. The only problem was creating a vehicle where he could do his thing. &lt;i&gt;Easy Money&lt;/i&gt; wasn&amp;#39;t it…&lt;i&gt;Easy Money&lt;/i&gt; finds Rodney playing more or less himself in that seemingly reliabe story of a cheerful vulgarian being forced to change his ways in order to receive a big reward. In this case it is Rodney&amp;#39;s Monster-In-Law who is leaving him $10 million if he promises to stop drinking, smoking, gambling, and doing all the things we love Rodney for. For some reason filmmakers think this story is a perfect fit for high-wire comic actors. It isn&amp;#39;t. It neuters them from doing what we go to see them do.”
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
At &lt;a href="http://www.thehousenextdooronline.com/2008/08/day-of-wrath-church-of-cinema.html" target="_blank"&gt;The House Next Door&lt;/a&gt;, Steven Boone has another look at Carl Dreyer’s &lt;i&gt;Day of Wrath&lt;/i&gt; and makes a surprising connection.  “Watching Day of Wrath for the second time at age 35 (in a crisp new digitally restored print at IFC Center), I now see much more &lt;i&gt;E.T.&lt;/i&gt; than &lt;i&gt;Schindler&amp;#39;s List&lt;/i&gt;: There are no villains, no evil—just weak and fearful individuals either hiding from or within a system that provides the cruel certainty and definition of wrathful law pretending to justice. Everyone in &lt;i&gt;Day of Wrath&lt;/i&gt; is only trying to be as human and honorable as he/she can be within the limits of a paranoiac theocracy. How did I ever miss the &lt;i&gt;Freejack&lt;/i&gt; comic book?  “This sci-fi opus starring Emilio Estevez and Mick Jagger (when was the last time you heard those three words?) didn’t exactly wow moviegoers, possibly because ‘FreeJack’ sounds like a euphemism for public masturbation. Now Comics inexplicably put out an adaptation of the movie long after it had left theaters and was largely forgotten by the general populace. Strangely, Mick Jagger is a far better actor in the comic version.”

This seems especially true of big, effects-driven summer blockbusters. When throwing tens- or even hundreds- of millions of dollars behind a movie, the studio is reluctant to take any unnecessary risks. Of course, there are still films that try to be unique and special, but they’re a risky proposition, since for every &lt;i&gt;Back to the Future&lt;/i&gt; there’s a &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/cs/controlpanel/Blogs/”http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2008/06/13/when-good-directors-go-bad-hulk-2003-ang-lee.aspx”"&gt;&lt;i&gt;Hulk&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/a&gt;. More often than not, studios leave little to chance in order to make a splashy, inoffensive movie that appeals to as many people as possible. And while movies like this sometimes make a lot of money, they rarely linger in the public consciousness for very long. By way of example, and just in time for Independence Day, I offer up… well, &lt;i&gt;Independence Day&lt;/i&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;What made &lt;i&gt;Independence Day&lt;/i&gt; a hit?:&lt;/b&gt; A few months ago, I spotlighted one of the biggest hits of the 1970s Irwin Allen disaster movie cycle, &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/cs/controlpanel/Blogs/”http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2008/05/06/yesterday-s-hits-the-towering-inferno-1974-john-guillermin.aspx”"&gt;&lt;i&gt;The Towering Inferno&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/a&gt;. The key to that movie’s success was the combination of big stars, state-of-the-art effects, and plenty of destruction to keep audiences entertained. When making &lt;i&gt;Independence Day&lt;/i&gt;, the major inspiration of director/producer team Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin was to fuse the Irwin Allen formula with an alien-invasion plot a la &lt;em&gt;War of the Worlds&lt;/em&gt;. And while &lt;i&gt;Independence Day&lt;/i&gt; lacked the megastars of its 70s-era predecessors- its top-liners were Will Smith, then best-known to many from TV’s &lt;i&gt;The Fresh Prince of Bel Air&lt;/i&gt;, a&lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/IDay-smith-goldblum.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/IDay-smith-goldblum.jpg" align="right" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt; post-&lt;i&gt;Jurassic Park&lt;/i&gt; Jeff Goldblum, and Bill “Not Paxton” Pullman- the relatively low-wattage cast only served to direct more attention to the effects-driven mayhem.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Realizing this, Emmerich, Devlin, and 20th Century Fox mounted a highly effective advertising campaign that played up the movie’s effects. Even today, the movie’s &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/id4spiner.jpg"&gt;&lt;/a&gt;most iconic image contains no actors whatsoever, but simply shows an alien craft blowing up the White House. And despite the lack of box-office draws, the ads paid off magnificently, with the movie earning over $300 million in the United States alone, making it the highest-grossing movie of 1996. In addition, &lt;i&gt;Independence Day&lt;/i&gt; propelled Smith to movie superstardom and launched his self-promoted reign as the king of July 4th releases.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;What happened?:&lt;/b&gt; For a movie that enjoyed such popularity on its initial release, &lt;i&gt;Independence Day&lt;/i&gt; enjoyed very little long-term love. The major reason for this was because there was very little about that movie that hadn’t been cribbed from earlier, better-loved blockbusters. The plot was formulaic, the characters were one-dimensional, and the aliens bore a strange resemblance to the extraterrestrial baddies from the &lt;i&gt;Alien&lt;/i&gt; franchise. Even the movie’s major selling point- the effects- suffered in the long run. &lt;i&gt;Independence Day&lt;/i&gt; was made to enjoyed in theatres, so inevitably the movie’s effects would suffer on the small screen, and as the years passed they became less impressive in light of more groundbreaking effects like those in &lt;i&gt;Titanic&lt;/i&gt; and the &lt;i&gt;Lord of the Rings&lt;/i&gt; trilogy. And really, without plot, characters, aliens and special effects, what’s left to &lt;i&gt;Independence Day&lt;/i&gt;?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Does &lt;i&gt;Independence Day&lt;/i&gt; still work?:&lt;/b&gt; Surprisingly, yes. Of course, for the movie to work it requires some willful suspension of disbelief. And by “some,” I mean “a whole truckload.” To put it bluntly, &lt;i&gt;Independence Day&lt;/i&gt; is pretty kind of stupid, and the more one thinks about the plot the dumber it gets. Even more than most alien-centric thrillers, the logic behind the invasion just doesn’t hold water. Similarly, the human race’s eventual solution to the threat is so harebrained that one could hardly be blamed for rolling one’s eyes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Likewise, most of the characters are pretty standard-issue. Each is assigned a quirk and a conflict and set loose within the story, and their separate character trajectories all proceed more or less as we expect them to. Some of the actors do a better job than others at making them work- Smith has an easy charm and Goldblum’s nebbish routine is almost always fun, but Pullman is clearly keeping his more eccentric impulses in check to play the President. In addition, the film’s most &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/id4spiner.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/id4spiner.jpg" align="right" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;entertaining supporting character (Brent Spiner’s endearingly daffy alien expert Dr. Okun) isn’t around nearly long enough, while the most irritating (Judd Hirsch as Goldblum’s perpetually kvetching dad) has far too much screen time. Of all the characters in the movie, he survives?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Yet the movie does more or less what it sets out to do- that is, to entertain the audience by blowing stuff up real good. Emmerich and Devlin’s hearts might not be in &lt;i&gt;Independence Day&lt;/i&gt;’s story or characters, but they’re certainly in the explosions, and they definitely deliver in this area. I think it’s telling that many of the effects in the movie were accomplished at least in part by using detailed models, as the filmmakers were so excited to set the world ablaze onscreen that they actually constructed the models to be blown up rather than simply using all-CGI effects like many other movies of the period. As a fan of old-school analog effects, I appreciated the extra effort that went into doing this.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Listen, by any rational standards &lt;i&gt;Independence Day&lt;/i&gt; is not a very good movie. It’s formulaic, and I’m pretty sure I killed some brain cells just by watching it again. But deep within the heart of many a moviegoer there’s a part that can’t resist movies that are loud and dumb and willfully cheesy with plenty of explosions, to say nothing of Will Smith talking about “whupping E.T.’s ass.” To ask for intelligence from &lt;i&gt;Independence Day&lt;/i&gt; is like reading Strindberg for the jokes- that’s not the point, so why bother looking? As Pope John Paul II once said of another potential Yesterday’s Hits entry, “it is what it is,” and for what it is, it gets the job done. As Paul Clark tipped you in &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2008/05/20/yesterday-s-hits-indiana-jones-and-the-temple-of-doom-1984-steven-spielberg.aspx" target="_blank"&gt;his revisitation&lt;/a&gt; of the &lt;i&gt;Temple of Doom&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;a href="http://cerebralmastication.blogspot.com/2008/05/indiana-jones-and-blog-thon-nexus.html" target="_blank"&gt;Cerebral Mastication&lt;/a&gt; is the hub of Indy blogdom, so a tip of the well-worn fedora to Ali Arikan for the centralized linkage.

The House Next Door&lt;/a&gt; offers a three-fer, looking back at all three previous Indiana Jones movies.  Matt Zoller Seitz emerges from semi-retirement to offer his own thoughts on &lt;i&gt;Temple of Doom&lt;/i&gt;, which he says “has the series&amp;#39; simplest plot, most annoying love interest, most casually racist and imperialist attitudes and most grotesque imagery (&lt;i&gt;Doom&lt;/i&gt; and its summer-of-&amp;#39;84 blockbuster cousin, the Spielberg-produced &lt;i&gt;Gremlins&lt;/i&gt;, sparked the creation of a new MPAA rating, PG-13). At the same time, though, it&amp;#39;s the most viscerally intense entry in the series and the most wide-ranging in its moods, spotlighting the imaginations of Spielberg and his co-producer, George Lucas, at their most freewheeling. It&amp;#39;s a blast from the id—like &lt;i&gt;Close Encounters&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;1941&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;E.T.&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;A.I&lt;/i&gt;, a rare instance of the director appearing to construct images and situations for his own private reasons, rather than keeping his eyes and ears attuned for signs of viewer discontent.”

At &lt;a href="http://eddieonfilm.blogspot.com/2008/05/indy-in-peril-action-scene-breakdown.html" target="_blank"&gt;Edward Copeland on Film&lt;/a&gt;, David Gaffen has narrowed his focus to a single scene from &lt;i&gt;Raiders of the Lost Ark&lt;/i&gt; – the one “where Indiana Jones, realizing that the Ark of the Covenant is to be placed on a plane and flown out of Egypt, sets out to sabotage the plane.”  Gaffen proceeds shot-by-shot to dissect the workings of a signature action sequence.  “The escalation here is deliberate – slowly ratchet up the tension within a scene that is already filled with active movement, derivative of Hitchcock in its cleverness even if Spielberg still names the 1950s serials as his original inspiration. The elements added in are small, careful ones – a shot of the wing grazing a nearby fuel truck, which spills gasoline. Just as the large German was introduced as a potential opponent this is presented as a problem, the proverbial gun in Act I that has to be fired in Act II.”

At &lt;a href="http://cinemastyles.blogspot.com/2008/05/but-how-strange-change-from-major-to.html" target="_blank"&gt;Cinema Styles&lt;/a&gt;, Jonathan Lapper is trying to get excited about this whole thing.  “A lot can change in 27 years. That&amp;#39;s how long it&amp;#39;s been since the original &lt;i&gt;Raiders of the Lost Ark&lt;/i&gt; and it&amp;#39;s been nearly two decades since the last one, &lt;i&gt;Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade&lt;/i&gt;. Look at it this way: Two of the biggest adventure hits of 1954 were &lt;i&gt;20,000 Leagues Under the Sea&lt;/i&gt; and&lt;i&gt; The Naked Jungle&lt;/i&gt;. Now imagine Kirk Douglas and Charlton Heston making sequels to those movies in 1981, 27 years later. By 1981 the movie landscape was decidedly different than it was in 1954 and 2008 is decidedly different than 1981. Maybe I&amp;#39;m wrong, but I don&amp;#39;t sense the excitement about a new Indiana Jones film like I did in the eighties. When the other two sequels were released they, like the &lt;i&gt;Star Wars &lt;/i&gt;sequels &lt;i&gt;The Empire Strikes Back &lt;/i&gt;and &lt;i&gt;Return of the Jedi&lt;/i&gt;, were the summer movies to see. Now Indiana Jones is practically lost in the shuffle.”

Cinematical has&lt;a href="http://www.cinematical.com/tag/indy2008/" target="_blank"&gt; a week’s worth&lt;/a&gt; of Indy stuff on offer.  They’ve got us covered for List-o-Mania this week with &lt;a href="http://www.cinematical.com/2008/05/20/cinematical-seven-indiana-jones-knock-offs/" target="_blank"&gt;Seven Indiana Jones Knock-Offs&lt;/a&gt;.  Number one is &lt;i&gt;Tomb Raider&lt;/i&gt;: “It&amp;#39;s like all the initial three Indiana Jones films wrapped up in one, with added sex appeal in casting Angelina Jolie in the Harrison Ford role. Yet Jolie as Croft is too serious to be the female counterpart to Ford&amp;#39;s Indy. Also, while the Indiana Jones films deal with some level of magically religious fantasy, they&amp;#39;re at least grounded by ‘real’ or familiar artifacts such as the Holy Grail and the Ark of the Covenant. And they tend to remain just realistic enough to avoid things like giant six-armed statues that come to life.”

Remember those kids who made the shot-for-shot remake of &lt;i&gt;Raiders&lt;/i&gt; back in the 80s?  Well, they’ve hit the big time – sort of.  According to &lt;a href="http://blog.wired.com/underwire/2008/05/kids-raiders-re.html" target="_blank"&gt;Underwire&lt;/a&gt;, “On May 14, eight days before the release of &lt;i&gt;Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull&lt;/i&gt;, now-grown filmmakers Chris Strompolos, Eric Zala and Jayson Lamb will showcase their movie at the landmark Mann&amp;#39;s Chinese Theater. But the guys who made it won&amp;#39;t see a dime. ‘Due to copyright issues, revenue from the screenings of our film must go to a nonprofit organization,’ said Strompolos…While &lt;i&gt;Adaptation &lt;/i&gt;can&amp;#39;t be screened for profit, the DIY back story has turned into a moneymaker for Strompolos, Zala and Lamb. Big-shot movie producer Scott Rudin (&lt;i&gt;There Will Be Blood&lt;/i&gt;) purchased rights to their real-life filmmaking adventures and hired Daniel Clowes (&lt;i&gt;Ghost World&lt;/i&gt;) to write the script for Paramount Pictures.”

It’s time for another all-night marathon, so put on a pot of coffee, find the sweet spot on the couch and join me for a nocturnal journey into the shadowy world of the mockbuster.  (If you’re not sure what a mockbuster is, &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2007/10/09/mockbusters.aspx" target="_blank"&gt;here’s a handy primer&lt;/a&gt;.)
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;
12 midnight.&lt;/b&gt;  We begin with the latest mockbuster from the good people at the Asylum, &lt;i&gt;Allan Quatermain and the Temple of Lost Skulls&lt;/i&gt;.  I’ll bet you can guess which blockbuster-in-waiting occasioned the release of this one.  Although the character of Allan Quatermain actually predates the creation of Indiana Jones by nearly a century, his reappearance now is a case of history repeating itself.&lt;i&gt;  Temple of Skulls&lt;/i&gt; is based on H. Rider Haggard’s 1885 novel &lt;i&gt;King Solomon’s Mines&lt;/i&gt;, as was the 1985 film starring Richard Chamberlain, a mockbuster before they had a word for it.  (Back then, we charitably called it a &lt;i&gt;Raiders of the Lost Ark&lt;/i&gt; ripoff.)  This doesn’t stop the producers from claiming that Allan Quatermain inspired Indiana Jones, which is partially true but certainly misleading in this context. In any case, there is no temple of skulls in the movie, so you can bet it was retitled once Lucasfilm announced the name of the latest Indiana Jones flick.  Anyway, as &lt;i&gt;Temple of Skulls&lt;/i&gt; begins, two rugged prospector types in South Africa find the map to King Solomon’s mines.  Not trusting each other, they split it in half to ensure they’ll stick together.  Shortly thereafter they are attacked by Zulus and the map pieces blow away.  Some time later, rugged great white hunter Quatermain (Sean Michael) gets his hands on one half.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;
12:20 am.  &lt;/b&gt;I’m trying to figure out when this movie is set.  We’ve got coal-burning trains, ladies in frilly frocks, black dudes in hip-hop hats and Nazi references.  So I guess…some time in the last 70 years or so?  Anyway, Quatermain has teamed up with Sir Henry and Lady Anna, a wealthy couple with the other half of the map.  They are being pursued by Quatermain’s arch-nemesis, a scenery chewer straight out of an old Hammer horror movie.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;
12:30 am.  &lt;/b&gt;Here we have a five-mile-an-hour chase between a truck and a locomotive engine.  It’s like someone stuck a Monty Python sketch in the middle of the movie.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;
12:45 am.  &lt;/b&gt;Our heroes dodge CGI bugs, then encounter a (real) rhino.  This scene is edited &lt;i&gt;Survivor&lt;/i&gt;-style; we have no idea if the rhino is even in the same hemisphere as Quatermain and the gang.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;
1:00 am.  &lt;/b&gt;In fine National Geographic tradition, Quatermain and company are captured by bare-breasted natives.  There is a bizarre CGI Zulu head-removal ritual.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;
1:15 am.&lt;/b&gt;  I was expecting pretty much constant action and zero plot from &lt;i&gt;Temple of Skulls&lt;/i&gt;, but that’s not actually the case.  For all I know, it’s a reasonably faithful adaptation.  I must give the Asylum credit for scenery at least; the movie is purty to look at.  
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;
1:40 am.  &lt;/b&gt;Let us move on to &lt;i&gt;King of the Lost World&lt;/i&gt;, another literary adaptation posing as a recent blockbuster.  It’s loosely based on A. Conan Doyle’s &lt;i&gt;The Lost World&lt;/i&gt;, with the addition of “King” to the title and a picture of a big scary ape on the cover to fool drunk people at Blockbuster into renting it.  The box also trumpets an appearance by Bruce Boxleitner – star of &lt;i&gt;Scarecrow and Mrs. King&lt;/i&gt;!  Well, that’ll bring the kids into the tent.  Anyway, &lt;i&gt;King &lt;/i&gt;opens with a plane crashing onto an island, announcing its intentions to rip off not only &lt;i&gt;King Kong&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;Jurassic Park&lt;/i&gt; but also &lt;i&gt;Lost&lt;/i&gt;.  This is confirmed when we see a stewardess trapped up in a tree.  Three minutes into the movie, a giant gorilla snatches her.  We won’t be seeing him again for a while.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;
2:00 am.&lt;/b&gt;  Giant bug attack!
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;
2:10 am.  &lt;/b&gt;There’s a glitch in the DVD and I have to jump ahead five minutes, at which point maggots are being used to heal a woman’s wound.  So glad I didn’t miss that.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;
2:25 am.  &lt;/b&gt;Our heroes find a fighter jet with an active nuke.  The mysterious Bruce Boxleitner knows how to hot-wire it.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;
2:40 am.  &lt;/b&gt;Things are happening now!  One dude gets impaled by a giant scorpion.  The others are taken hostage by skull-face painted natives.  There are boobies!  And lesbian natives!
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;
2:50 am.  &lt;/b&gt;A flurry of terrible CGI: we’ve got pterodactyls, plus the giant ape finally returns, though he looks blurry and pixilated.  (Another reason &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2008/05/12/cgi-must-die.aspx" target="_blank"&gt;CGI must die&lt;/a&gt;: think about how much progress in giant robot ape technology could have been made by now.) Boxleitner reveals he was sent to disarm the nuke, which really makes no sense, especially once he explains that the bomb has a limited range of 300 yards.  Anyway, they blow up the ape real good.  Okay, I’m lying.  It’s not real good.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;
3:00 am.&lt;/b&gt;  It’s time for &lt;i&gt;The Da Vinci Treasure&lt;/i&gt;.  Here’s how you know these folks at the Asylum aren’t completely shameless: the film concerns a forensic archeologist and his search for the Da Vinci codex.  See – they could have called this &lt;i&gt;The Da Vinci Codex&lt;/i&gt;!  Maybe they didn’t quite have the grapes for that (though they did make &lt;i&gt;The Transmorphers&lt;/i&gt;, unreviewed here – I’ve got my limits too, junior.)  
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;
3:15 am.  &lt;/b&gt;Anyway, the main players here are a haggard C. Thomas Howell as our hero Michael Archer, an earring-sporting Lance Henriksen as the villainous Dr. John Coven, and Nicole Sherwin as your typically hot linguist/theologian. Throughout the movie, director Peter Mervis (&lt;i&gt;Snakes on a Train&lt;/i&gt;) employs an annoying effect that kept making me think there was something wrong with my DVD player. It’s a sort of freeze-frame/flash/jumpcut deal – like someone mentions Jesus, and suddenly there’s a flash of light, a whoosh, quick shots of a crucifix and the Last Supper, and then back to the scene. I guess this pumps up the excitement level, as if looking for hidden clues on the Shroud of Turin weren’t exciting enough!
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;
3:20 am.&lt;/b&gt;  We have our first mention of the Knights Templar!  Also, the Shroud of Turin is apparently kept in the basement of the Alamo.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;
3:30 am.&lt;/b&gt;  And Da Vinci invented 3-D glasses, in case you were wondering.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;
3:45 am.&lt;/b&gt;  In what must be the most expensive scene in any of these Asylum movies, there is a smash-em-up car chase through the streets of London (or San Diego, whatever) involving a tour bus.  Fortunately they didn’t have to pay the guy playing the Casio on the soundtrack too much.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;
4:15 am.&lt;/b&gt;  Apparently I nodded off during the big revelation scene in &lt;i&gt;The Da Vinci Treasure&lt;/i&gt;.  I’m sure it changed the face of Christianity forever, but there’s no time to go back!  Let’s wrap this up with an old school mockbuster to cleanse the palate, shall we?  Of course I’m talking about 1988’s timeless&lt;i&gt; E.T. &lt;/i&gt;ripoff, &lt;i&gt;Mac and Me&lt;/i&gt;.  We begin on another planet, where a family of aliens is accidentally sucked into the vacuum hose of a rover from Earth.  The aliens, I guess, are meant to be cute, but to me they look like giant sea monkeys or very confused burn victims.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;
4:30 am.&lt;/b&gt;  After the alien family is brought to Earth, the smallest alien, or Mysterious Alien Creature, or MAC (you see?), hitches a ride with a single mother and her two sons moving to California.  They don’t notice him, but he keeps getting into mischief, and the youngest, wheelchair-bound brother Eric keeps getting blamed for it.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;
4:45 am.  &lt;/b&gt;Eric plummets off a cliff in his wheelchair and is rescued by Mac.  When he tells the doctor what happened, the doc diagnoses him with “schizofreakia” and decides to dope him up.  Ah, the 80s.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;
5:00 am.&lt;/b&gt;  Breakdancing!  At McDonald’s!  With Ronald McDonald and football players and – don’t take my word for it, see for yourself:

5:15 am.  &lt;/b&gt;By now everyone believes Mac exists, and they help reunite him with his family members, who are trapped in a mineshaft out by those windmills from &lt;i&gt;Rain Man&lt;/i&gt;.  The kids nurse the aliens back to life with nourishing sips of Coca-Cola.  I tell ya, this movie is Morgan Spurlock’s worst nightmare.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;
5:30 am.  &lt;/b&gt;Of course, government agents are in hot pursuit of Mac, and in their attempts to capture him they manage to blow up an entire mall and kill Eric in the process.  Fortunately, Mac and his family are able to suck the death right out of him.  Apparently the aliens don’t hold their ill treatment by the agents against their government, as the movie concludes with the whole family becoming U.S. citizens.  A final ominous title card claims “We’ll Be Back.”  We’re still waiting.
