&lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2009/05/s_Darko-DVD.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2009/05/s_Darko-DVD.jpg" align="right" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;The “latest features” sidebar over there in the right-hand column of your screen has been a running joke amongst us Screengrab staffers for almost exactly a year now…because it’s been that long since the latest features featured there have been updated.  There’s no point in doing it now, of course; I merely point it out to draw attention to the “&lt;b&gt;Donnie Darko Part Deux!?&lt;/b&gt;” headline, which manages to convey a mixture of horror and bafflement at the prospect of such an animal’s existence.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
That animal is now here in the form of &lt;i&gt;S. Darko&lt;/i&gt;, and Richard Kelly would presumably still want you to know that he had absolutely nothing to do with its existence.  Instead, it’s the product of screenwriter Nathan Atkins (author of the TV-movie &lt;i&gt;Point of Entry&lt;/i&gt;) and director Chris Fisher, the man behind several serial killer movies and a handful of &lt;i&gt;Cold Case&lt;/i&gt; episodes.   I’ve not seen any of their earlier work, so I won’t hold it against them.  I have seen &lt;i&gt;S. Darko&lt;/i&gt;, however, so that one is fair game.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
The only returning cast member from the original &lt;i&gt;Donnie Darko&lt;/i&gt; is Daveigh Chase, who you’ll remember as the littlest member of Sparkle Motion, Samantha Darko.  As &lt;i&gt;S. Darko&lt;/i&gt; opens (in 1995, though you’d never know it if not for the helpful title cards), Sam is all growed up into a confused 18-year-old.  Still haunted by her brother’s bizarre death, Sam is driving cross-country with best friend Corey (Briana Evigan of &lt;i&gt;Step Up 2: The Streets&lt;/i&gt;, and yes, daughter of &lt;i&gt;BJ and the Bear&lt;/i&gt; star Greg Evigan); Sam is the angsty one, Corey the slutty one.  When their car breaks down in a nowhere town and they hole up in a cheap motel, you could be watching &lt;i&gt;Thelma and Louise: The Early Years&lt;/i&gt;.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
That’s when the weird stuff starts happening.  And by “weird stuff,” I mean secondhand effects cribbed from Kelly’s cult favorite: time loops, transparent, tentacle-like blobs, bunny-like apparitions and another end-of-the-world countdown.  Characters die and come back to life, and it’s all part of the personal growth experience – figuring out who you are and your place in the world the hard way.  The question that never gets answered: Why should we care about these people?  Sam is a mopey downer, while Corey is simply one of the most abrasive, unlikable characters in recent memory.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Far more entertaining than the movie itself is the “making of” documentary included on the DVD.  It’s hilarious to watch everyone from the screenwriter to the cast to the best boy try to justify their involvement in this pointless endeavor.  Don’t get me wrong, I’ll sign on to write, direct or set up lawn chairs for &lt;i&gt;Gomer Darko&lt;/i&gt; if there’s a decent paycheck in it, so I’m not moralizing here; it’s just that no one is honest enough to admit that’s their motivation.  They all bend over backwards to emphasize that this is a “continuation,” not a sequel, and that it’s very respectful of Kelly’s vision and the rules of the world he set up.  No one can adequately explain why this movie was made in the first place.  After all, the original&lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt; Darko&lt;/span&gt; was barely released in theaters and only acquired a cult following after its DVD release.  Cult audiences don’t tend to respond well to this kind of cash-in attempt, as the makers of &lt;i&gt;Shock Treatment&lt;/i&gt; can attest.

&lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2009/05/christina-trixie.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2009/05/christina-trixie.jpg" align="right" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;As the Final Days draw nigh, nostalgia for the salad days of the Screengrab thickens like gravy left out on the kitchen counter overnight.  I’m sorry to mention both salad and gravy in that previous sentence, but I didn’t have any lunch.  The point is this: I’ve been leafing through the archives like a beloved old photo album, wistfully looking back at the days when your favorite Screengrabbers were skinny and had all their hair.  No, I’m joking, of course – our archives don’t go back to 1983.  But they do go back to May 12, 2008, a pivotal moment in cinematic history.  Let’s take a closer look, shall we?
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
It was a more innocent time, when none of us had yet seen&lt;i&gt; Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull&lt;/i&gt;.  It hadn’t even leaked on the Internet – although a few reviews had, much to the consternation of Lucas &amp;amp; Co., as we learned from Phil Nugent in his pithy post &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2008/05/12/indiana-jones-and-the-internet-critics-pre-emptive-strike-ain-t-it-cool-news-sandbags-spielberg-and-co.aspx" target="_blank"&gt;Indiana Jones and the Internet Critics&amp;#39; Pre-emptive Strike: Ain&amp;#39;t It Cool News Sandbags Spielberg and Co.&lt;/a&gt;  “The initial ‘quick reaction’ was posted to Ain&amp;#39;t It Cool News last Thursday evening by ‘ShogunMaster.’ The spoiler-heavy review reports that Harrison Ford ‘has a few lines that work and a million that don&amp;#39;t’, trashes the other performers, laments the lack of tension or suspense…and sums up the proceedings with the judgement that this is ‘the Indiana Movie that you were dreading.’”  ShogunMaster: a prophet before his time.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Our summer predictions were still looking good, as Andrew Osborne informed us in &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2008/05/12/speed-racer-bombs-screengrab-two-for-two.aspx" target="_blank"&gt;Speed Racer Bombs! Screengrab Two For Two!&lt;/a&gt;  “Sad news for the Wachowski Brothers, Emile Hirsch, Christina Ricci and Chim Chim the monkey, perhaps...but it does mean we here at the Screengrab currently have a perfect batting average with regard to our predictions for the Top 5 Hits and Misses of the 2008 Summer Movie Season.”  Little did we know that &lt;i&gt;Sex and the City &lt;/i&gt;lurked just ahead, waiting to sucker punch us with its Manolo Blahniks.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Andrew also lit up the blogosphere with his controversial rant &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2008/05/12/cgi-must-die.aspx" target="_blank"&gt;CGI Must Die: 5 Reasons Why&lt;/a&gt;.  So influential was this piece that CGI has almost completely vanished from the multiplex, aside from &lt;i&gt;Star Trek, Watchmen, Wolverine&lt;/i&gt;, and all the other movies that have made any money this year.   For my part, I endured the &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2008/05/12/all-night-mockbuster-marathon.aspx" target="_blank"&gt;All-Night Mockbuster Marathon&lt;/a&gt;.  Hard to believe it’s been a whole year since I last enjoyed this:

Finally, there was this cautionary post: &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2008/05/12/sequel-to-quot-donnie-darko-quot-is-on-the-way-to-much-to-the-dismay-of-the-creator-of-quot-donnie-darko-quot.aspx" target="_blank"&gt;Sequel to &amp;quot;Donnie Darko&amp;quot; Is on the Way, Much to the Dismay of the Creator of &amp;quot;Donnie Darko&amp;quot;&lt;/a&gt;.  Well, that sequel is no longer on the way.  Exactly one year later – on this very day, May 12, 2009 – &lt;i&gt;S. Darko&lt;/i&gt; is released on DVD.  What does it all mean?  I believe it means the Screengrab is a powerful force that should not be tampered with.  But that’s just my opinion.

For most moviegoers, this week’s big ticket title is the Euro-flavored kidnapping thriller &lt;i&gt;Taken&lt;/i&gt;. Produced by Luc Besson and helmed by Pierre (&lt;i&gt;District B13&lt;/i&gt;) Morel, &lt;i&gt;Taken&lt;/i&gt; became the first action hit of 2009 by combining the high-octane grit of its action scenes with the unexpected gravitas brought to the story by star Liam Neeson. Not faring so well at the box office was &lt;i&gt;Underworld: Rise of the Lycans&lt;/i&gt; (Sony, also Blu-Ray), the third in the seemingly deathless vampires-versus-werewolves saga. Also this week, Terence Davies’ Liverpool doc &lt;i&gt;Of Time and the City&lt;/i&gt; (Strand) hits stores, along with a trio of high-profile direct-to-DVD releases: the &lt;i&gt;Donnie Darko&lt;/i&gt; follow-up &lt;i&gt;S. Darko&lt;/i&gt; (Fox, also Blu-Ray), Michelle Pfeiffer and Ashton “Twitter King” Kutcher in &lt;i&gt;Personal Effects&lt;/i&gt; (Universal, also Blu-Ray), and &lt;i&gt;The Grudge 3&lt;/i&gt; (Sony), the not-particularly-anticipated third entry in the &lt;i&gt;Grudge&lt;/i&gt; series.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In classics, the &lt;i&gt;Trek&lt;/i&gt; love continues today with Paramount’s &lt;i&gt;Star Trek: The Motion Picture Trilogy&lt;/i&gt; (also Blu-Ray), which thankfully doesn’t include the boring-ass first &lt;i&gt;Star Trek&lt;/i&gt; movie, but instead encompasses films two through four. And if Trekkers are in need a few laughs and don’t feel like watching IV (or V, for that matter) again, they can pick up the &lt;i&gt;Galaxy Quest&lt;/i&gt; Deluxe Edition (Paramount), which for my money is the best (unofficial) &lt;i&gt;Trek&lt;/i&gt; movie since Kirk and Co. saved the whales. Or if you’re all Trekked out, the folks at Eclipse are releasing their latest box set, &lt;i&gt;Eclipse Series 16: Alexander Korda’s Private Lives&lt;/i&gt;, which includes four high-spirited big-screen peeks into the lives of Henry VIII, Catherine the Great, Don Juan, and Rembrandt. And finally, Criterion’s releasing John Huston’s beloved “late” film &lt;i&gt;Wise Blood&lt;/i&gt; (Criterion), one of the last “great” Huston films I still have yet to see. This of course would make it a key candidate for a Reviews by Request column except for oh wait.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This week’s TV on DVD slate is highlighted by the release of &lt;i&gt;The Dana Carvey Show&lt;/i&gt; (Universal). Despite airing only eight episodes before getting the axe, this series has a cult following among TV fans. In fact, I’d be tempted to call Carvey a genius for surrounding himself with such promising talents as then up-and-comers Stephen Colbert, Steve Carell, Robert Smigel, and Charlie Kaufman, if not for the fact that he was also responsible for &lt;i&gt;The Master of Disguise&lt;/i&gt;. Also this week, &lt;i&gt;Seth Macfarlane’s Cavalcade of Cartoon Comedy&lt;/i&gt; (Fox, also Blu-Ray).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In Blu-Ray only news, today brings the release of &lt;i&gt;Star Trek: The Original Motion Picture Collection&lt;/i&gt; (Paramount), which collects all six of the original cast movies in one spiffed-up Blu-Ray Collection. And Paramount’s got plenty of comedy hitting stores as well, with &lt;i&gt;Black Sheep&lt;/i&gt; (Paramount), &lt;i&gt;Major League&lt;/i&gt; (Paramount), &lt;i&gt;Wayne’s World&lt;/i&gt; (Paramount), &lt;i&gt;Wayne’s World 2&lt;/i&gt; (Paramount), and &lt;i&gt;Without a Paddle&lt;/i&gt; (Paramount) on the way. Also this week: &lt;i&gt;CSI&lt;/i&gt; Season 1 (Paramount), &lt;i&gt;Force 10 from Navarone&lt;/i&gt; (Fox), and &lt;i&gt;The Grudge&lt;/i&gt; (Sony).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Finally, our Synopsis of the Week takes us to the world of kiddie animation, with the four-part &lt;i&gt;Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles&lt;/i&gt; 25th Anniversary Edition, Season 7, available today in four parts from Lionsgate. Dig this crazy premise:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt;“Mutated into anthropomorphic fighting machines when they fall into the sewer at a young age, four turtles--Michelangelo, Leonardo, Donatello, and Raphael--have been trained in the martial arts by the sewer-dwelling Hamato Yoshi. Now, they fight crime in New York City, using their ninja skills as well as the aid of news reporter April O&amp;#39;Neil to counter the efforts of their enemy, Shredder. In this collection of the first six episodes from the 1987-96 animated series’ seventh season, the Turtles tangle with both natural and man-made elements while on adventures involving a massive tidal wave, melting glaciers, and the Eiffel Tower.”&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Wow, who thinks of this stuff? /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;With St. Valentine’s Day less than a week away, you’d think studios would start rolling out some of their romantic classics on DVD. But I’m seeing very little of that this week, unless of course your idea of romance is vastly different than mine…&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;DVDs of the Week:&lt;/b&gt; But then, for me, nothing says romance like a pair of movies from surrealist master Luis Bunuel. This week brings two of his favorites, &lt;i&gt;The Exterminating Angel&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;Simon of the Desert&lt;/i&gt;, courtesy of the folks at Criterion. &lt;i&gt;The Exterminating Angel&lt;/i&gt; is the known quantity for me, a wicked satire of bourgeois manners, in which a group of upper-crusters finds itself unable to leave following a dinner party, which brings them no end of trouble. &lt;i&gt;Simon&lt;/i&gt;, Bunuel’s telling of the story of an ascetic who stood atop a remote pillar to prove his love for God, is one I’ve yet to see (do I smell a future Reviews By Request?), but its DVD release is no less noteworthy. The films, made during Bunuel’s sojourn in Mexico, have been given the deluxe Criterion treatment, with new transfers, documentaries, new interviews with actress Sylvia Pinal and others, and more.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Other noteworthy this week is Janus’ &lt;i&gt;Essential Art House: Volume 2&lt;/i&gt;, which includes &lt;i&gt;The 400 Blows&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;Black Orpheus&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;Pygmalion&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;La Strada&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;Ikiru&lt;/i&gt;, and &lt;i&gt;The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp&lt;/i&gt; in single-disc editions, also available separately. In addition, Lionsgate is releasing new editions of the &lt;i&gt;Wallace and Gromit&lt;/i&gt; short films, &lt;i&gt;A Close Shave&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;A Grand Day Out&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;The Wrong Trousers&lt;/i&gt;. Finally- and I can’t in good conscience call this a classic, though it’s not new- Universal’s got the “Extreme Edition” of the final film from the great Raul Julia, &lt;i&gt;Street Fighter&lt;/i&gt; (also Blu-Ray). So if you enjoy things that suck, set aside money for that one.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If newer movies are more your speed, this week’s recent releases coming to DVD include: Courtney Hunt’s double Oscar nominee &lt;i&gt;Frozen River&lt;/i&gt; (Sony, also Blu-Ray); Kevin Smith’s &lt;i&gt;Zack and Miri Make a Porno&lt;/i&gt; (Genius Products&lt;/i&gt;; Samuel L. Jackson and the late Bernie Mac in &lt;i&gt;Soul Men&lt;/i&gt; (Genius Products); Richard Gere and Diane Lane in &lt;i&gt;Nights in Rodanthe&lt;/i&gt; (Warner, also Blu-Ray); and a pair of very different showbiz satires, Barry Levinson’s &lt;i&gt;What Just Happened?&lt;/i&gt; (Magnolia), and Bruce Campbell directing Bruce Campbell in &lt;i&gt;My Name Is Bruce&lt;/i&gt; (Image, also Blu-Ray). Also this week, a quartet of curious films from fascinating filmmakers: Oliver Stone’s &lt;i&gt;W.&lt;/i&gt; (Lionsgate, also Blu-Ray); Spike Lee’s WW2 drama &lt;i&gt;Miracle at St. Anna&lt;/i&gt; (Buena Vista, also Blu-Ray); Fernando Meirelles’ &lt;i&gt;Blindness&lt;/i&gt; (Buena Vista); and Eric Rohmer’s &lt;i&gt;The Romance of Astrea and Celadon&lt;/i&gt; (E1 Entertainment Distribution), allegedly the master’s final film. Oddly enough, the Rohmer looks to be the most romantic movie in this week’s column. Don’t know if your &lt;i&gt;Dirty Dancing&lt;/i&gt;-loving special lady would go for it though…&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Finally, a pretty action-packed and bloody lineup of Blu-Ray only releases this week: Martin Scorsese’s classic &lt;i&gt;Raging Bull&lt;/i&gt; (MGM); David Cronenberg’s &lt;i&gt;A History of Violence&lt;/i&gt; (Warner); a pair of John Grisham adaptations, &lt;i&gt;A Time to Kill&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;The Pelican Brief&lt;/i&gt; (both Warner); a double feature starring The Rock, &lt;i&gt;Doom&lt;/i&gt; (Universal) and &lt;i&gt;The Rundown&lt;/i&gt; (Universal); and two of Onion AV Club critic Scott Tobias’ &lt;a href="http://www.avclub.com/features/the-new-cult-canon/"&gt;New Cult Canon&lt;/a&gt; picks, &lt;i&gt;Donnie Darko&lt;/i&gt; (Fox) and &lt;i&gt;The Boondock Saints&lt;/i&gt; (Fox). Also, Milos Forman’s &lt;i&gt;Amadeus&lt;/i&gt;: The Director’s Cut (Warner) and the table-tennis comedy &lt;i&gt;Ping Pong Playa&lt;/i&gt; (Image).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br &lt;embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/DtMOE6MmO7M&amp;amp;hl=en&amp;amp;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="344"&gt;&lt;/embed&gt;&lt;/object&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;At some point in the&amp;nbsp;recent past, we here at the Screengrab compiled &lt;a class="" href="http://nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2008/11/20/screengrab-s-top-guilty-pleasures-part-one.aspx"&gt;a list of our guiltiest pleasures&lt;/a&gt;, and one of mine was &lt;em&gt;The Brown Bunny&lt;/em&gt;, which I pretty much only wanted to see because of the notorious...uh...&lt;em&gt;love&lt;/em&gt; scene between director/star Vincent Gallo and his co-star (and former paramour) Chloe Sevigny. Such a prurient interest is sad on two levels: first, that a grown, married man would rent a movie just to watch a quasi-famous actress get busy with an allegedly prosthetic &lt;em&gt;schwanzstucker...&lt;/em&gt;but&amp;nbsp;secondly that Gallo’s sophomore directorial effort would have so little else going for it after the flat-out brilliance of &lt;em&gt;Buffalo 66&lt;/em&gt;. Starring as an ex-con loser who kidnaps a bored teen (Christina Ricci) in hopes of passing her off as his wife in a doomed effort to impress his hateful parents (Ben Gazzara and Anjelica Huston), Gallo&amp;#39;s&amp;nbsp;Billy Brown&amp;nbsp;is all jittery desperation and hostile self-loathing...yet somehow, by the end of the movie, you’re rooting for both the character and the director, while the grim, hellish landscape of upstate New York in winter (a perfect reflection of the protagonist’s stunted isolation) has somehow blossomed with unexpected hope. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;YOU CAN COUNT ON ME (2000)&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

This entry, which marked the film directing debut of playwright Kenneth Lonergan, stood out enough to count as a redemption of the genre. It also upped the profile of its star, Laura Linney, and all but launched the career, after some ten mostly uneventful years in movies, of Mark Ruffalo. The film won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2000 festival, and Lonergan (who&amp;nbsp;himself picked up the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award)&amp;nbsp;finally follows it up later this year when his second feature, &lt;em&gt;Margaret&lt;/em&gt;, starring Anna Pacquin and Ruffalo, arrives in theaters. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;AMERICAN PSYCHO (2001)&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/POl3eD6IJ7A&amp;amp;hl=en&amp;amp;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="344"&gt;&lt;/embed&gt;&lt;/object&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the wake of &lt;em&gt;The Blair Witch Project&lt;/em&gt;, Sundance slowly fell victim to that most dreaded of industry catchwords: “Buzz.” And as the fest’s spotty post-1999 reputation confirms, the most troublesome thing about encouraging and promoting buzz is that, when the buzzed-about don’t live up to their advanced billing, it’s the festival itself that suffers. Few films have ever arrived at Sundance with more early-bird hype than did Mary Harron’s &lt;em&gt;American Psycho&lt;/em&gt; in 2001, given that, as an adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ infamous serial killer tome, its mixture of tongue-in-cheek ‘80s details and brutal violence, all wrapped up in a Kubrickian chill, seemed to make it, in the minds of many prognosticators, an “edgy” film with &lt;em&gt;Fight Club&lt;/em&gt;-ish cult-fave potential. Such similarities, it turned out, were superficial at best. Still, &lt;em&gt;American Psycho&lt;/em&gt; remains, eight years on, one of the few to match its lofty Sundance expectations, thanks to Christian Bale’s pitch-perfect personification of yuppiedom as a lethal mental affliction, Harron’s eerily composed, sterile direction, and a superlative murder scene set to the ominous sound of Huey Lewis and the News. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;DONNIE DARKO (2001)&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

Kelly hailed from a film-geek background but, with his debut, refused to simply indulge in name-check homages and cheesy nostalgia, instead creating an authentic sense of his ‘80s time period and suburban milieu (and the discomfort liberals felt during Michael Dukakis’ failed ’88 presidential bid), all while offering up one giant head-scratcher of a sci-fi saga involving time travel, Tears for Fears’ “Mad World,” and a menacing, knife-wielding giant rabbit who foretells news of the coming apocalypse to Donnie (Jake Gyllenhaal). As assured as it is beguiling, &lt;em&gt;Donnie Darko&lt;/em&gt;, like Christopher Nolan’s &lt;em&gt;Memento&lt;/em&gt; (which preceded it by a year), is a genre piece that rewards and, in certain respects, requires repeat viewings to unlock its twisted chronological mysteries, something that can’t, unfortunately, be said of Kelly’s follow-up &lt;em&gt;Southland Tales&lt;/em&gt;. Me, I say come for the mystery, stay for the entrancing atmosphere of doomed-teen-romanticism. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;SUPER TROOPERS (2001)&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

That description certainly applies to their debut about a group of misfit-slacker state troopers, which first screened at Sundance 2001 and amounts to a series of gags that range from the brilliant to the dreary. If the latter slightly outnumber the former, however, they don’t overshadow them, thanks in part to some inspired casting – how Broken Lizard convinced serious thesp Brian Cox to participate in such inanity remains baffling – that energizes the film’s humor. But moreover, &lt;em&gt;Super Troopers&lt;/em&gt; thrives thanks to its pièce-de-résistance involving a couple of troopers pulling over a speeding car in which the backseat teenage passenger, in an effort to avoid arrest and prosecution, has engulfed a giant bag of marijuana. (Lindsay!&amp;nbsp; We know you read this feature religiously!&amp;nbsp; Put down that bottle and pull over to the side of the road and take some notes!)&amp;nbsp; She made her film debut at five in the aptly titled &lt;em&gt;Altered States&lt;/em&gt;; two years later, &lt;em&gt;E.T. the Extra-terrestrial&lt;/em&gt; made her a household name and led to her becoming the youngest-ever host of &lt;em&gt;Saturday Night Live&lt;/em&gt;, a record that I hope is still in her name:&amp;nbsp; I&amp;#39;m too afraid to check to see who might have broken it since. After an early spell (she was barely in her teens) as a tabloid star with stints in and out of rehab, Barrymore&amp;#39;s mature career began with her attention-getting bad girl performance in the 1992 &lt;em&gt;Poison Ivy&lt;/em&gt;, in which she played the jailbait from hell. Her work in that film was highly creditable, but it soon became clear that she wasn&amp;#39;t really cut out to be playing mean girls: she was just too damned lovable. Since then, she&amp;#39;s contributed her glow to such offbeat projects as &lt;em&gt;Guncrazy&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;Home Fries&lt;/em&gt;, and &lt;em&gt;Donnie Darko&lt;/em&gt;, which was partly financed by Flower Films, the company she co-founded in 1999, and which has produced such vehicles as &lt;em&gt;Never Been Kissed&lt;/em&gt; and the &lt;em&gt;Charlie&amp;#39;s Angels&lt;/em&gt; films. Her charitable endeavors extend to many of her romantic comedies: she has convincingly simulated a yearning interest in such male co-stars as Adam Sandler (twice!), Jimmy Fallon, and Tom Green. (Let&amp;#39;s not go there.) Barrymore has the potential to be a major dramatic actress, as has been most clearly demonstrated by her remarkable turn as a girl whose life is twisted out of shape by a pregnancy born of a mercy fuck (with Steve Zahn), but in the meantime, in fluffy comedies and talk show appearances, she continues to do the great work that it sometimes seems that she, alone of all the actresses in Hollywood, is fully capable of doing: she gives cuteness a good name. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;CLAUDIA CARDINALE (1938 - ) &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

This detail set the tone for much of her career: a great actress with the ability to make direct contact with an audience, Bujold spent the seventies being courted by Hollywood studios and touted in the press as a big star in the making, but she kept slipping away from the bonds of real fame by her insistence on doing the roles she wanted to do. (One big exception was &lt;em&gt;Earthquake&lt;/em&gt;, in which she played Charlton Heston&amp;#39;s girlfriend as part of the settlement of a lawsuit filed by Universal Pictures for breach of contract.) During her ingenue period, she won an Academy Award nomination for playing Anne Boleyn to Richard Burton&amp;#39;s Henry VIII in her first U.S. picture, &lt;em&gt;Anne of the Thousand Days&lt;/em&gt; (1969), then slipped away to Greece to contribute a stunning cameo as Cassandra in the Michael Cacoyannis film of &lt;em&gt;The Trojan Women&lt;/em&gt; (1971), had a freak-out scene for the ages in Brian De Palma&amp;#39;s &lt;em&gt;Obsession&lt;/em&gt; (1976), and came as close as she would ever come to mainstream stardom in Michael Crichton&amp;#39;s &lt;em&gt;Coma&lt;/em&gt; (1978). In her mature-actress period, she stirred strange longings in Clint Eastwood in &lt;em&gt;Tightrope&lt;/em&gt; (1984), stirred even stranger ones in Jeremy Irons in &lt;em&gt;Dead Ringers&lt;/em&gt; (1988), and introduced some experience and earthiness to Alan Rudolph&amp;#39;s soap-bubble worlds in &lt;em&gt;Choose Me&lt;/em&gt; (1984), &lt;em&gt;Trouble in Mind&lt;/em&gt; (1985), and &lt;em&gt;The Moderns&lt;/em&gt; (1988). It&amp;#39;s been a while since she was in anything that anybody saw, but she is never to be counted out and it&amp;#39;s good to know that she&amp;#39;s still out there, waiting for some young hotshot director who isn&amp;#39;t afraid of writing a part for a strong woman to do himself a favor. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;MAGGIE CHEUNG (1964 - )&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

Her dry, witty performance in that movie as some version of herself, politely standing around between takes on a movie set while an assistant with a spray bottle applies the right sheen to her shiny black cat suit, was a measure of how far she&amp;#39;d come since her early days in movies:&amp;nbsp; a former model and First Runner-Up in the Miss Hong Kong beauty contest (who beat her? who the fuck beat her!?), Cheung can be seen not doing much besides looking damned good in a number of HK films, including such Jackie Chan classics as &lt;em&gt;Police Story&lt;/em&gt; and &lt;em&gt;Project A Part II&lt;/em&gt;. Cheung has given credit for her emergence as an actress to Wong Kar-wei, master of all things beautiful, who brought her out in &lt;em&gt;As Tears Go By&lt;/em&gt; and later used her in &lt;em&gt;Days of Being Wild&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;Ashes of Time&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;In the Mood for Love&lt;/em&gt;, and &lt;em&gt;2046&lt;/em&gt;. While developing her talent, Cheung has also managed to maintain a presence in the Hong Kong action-fantasy cinema, co-starring in such films as &lt;em&gt;The Heroic Trio&lt;/em&gt; and &lt;em&gt;Green Snake&lt;/em&gt;; both strands of her career came together triumphantly in Zhang Yimou&amp;#39;s &lt;em&gt;Hero&lt;/em&gt;, where she kicked ass and broke hearts with the best of them. She gave her finest dramatic performance to date in her most recent film, Assayas&amp;#39;s &lt;em&gt;Clean&lt;/em&gt;, for which she won the Best Actress prize at Cannes. She has since announced that she&amp;#39;s quitting acting to concentrate on her music. Her fans can be forgiven for hoping that she eventually finds composing to be insufficiently gratifying to her ego and comes slouching back.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;MIA FARROW (1945)&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

She became a star from her role in the TV series &lt;em&gt;Peyton Place&lt;/em&gt;, which she quit at the behest of her new husband, Frank Sinatra; she then blew off the marriage to Sinatra by refusing to give up her starring role in &lt;em&gt;Rosemary&amp;#39;s Baby&lt;/em&gt;. That movie made her an even bigger star, but it also raised the possibility that she might wind up being exploited in picture after picture as the most defenselessly threatenable potential victim since the days of silent melodrama. Perhaps alert to this danger, she spent most of the next ten years alternating between very bad choices (&lt;em&gt;Secret Ceremony&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;The Great Gatsby&lt;/em&gt;) and, so far as a movie career was concerned, making no choices at all. In 1978, she appeared as a member of ensemble casts in Robert Altman&amp;#39;s &lt;em&gt;A Wedding&lt;/em&gt; and the Agatha Christie film &lt;em&gt;Death on the Nile&lt;/em&gt; and, in both, revealed a new eagerness to subvert audience&amp;#39;s sympathetic expectations of her and to use her own weirdness for comic effect. It wasn&amp;#39;t long after that she took up with Woody Allen, and starting with 1982&amp;#39;s &lt;em&gt;A Midsummer Night&amp;#39;s Sex Comedy&lt;/em&gt;,&amp;nbsp;embarked on a ten-year stretch where she appeared almost exclusively in his movies. In the best of them, he examined every angle from which she could be charming, and she has him to thank for having broadened and solidified her enduring screen image. There&amp;#39;s a whole lot of other stuff he did for which she has not been inclined to thank him, and when their professional and personal relationships both ended with an abrupt thud around the time of the release of 1992&amp;#39;s &lt;em&gt;Husbands and Wives&lt;/em&gt;, she hurtled out of his orbit and latched onto supporting roles in other people&amp;#39;s movies with what looked an awful lot like relief. From the first of her post-Woody movies, John Irvin&amp;#39;s &lt;em&gt;Widow&amp;#39;s Peak&lt;/em&gt; (1994) to the most recent, Michel Gondry&amp;#39;s &lt;em&gt;Be Kind Rewind&lt;/em&gt;, she can generally be counted on to&amp;nbsp;serve as&amp;nbsp;a delightful addition to any project that is salvageable and as&amp;nbsp;something fascinatingly odd&amp;nbsp;in any project that isn&amp;#39;t. Last year, &lt;em&gt;Time&lt;/em&gt; magazine named her as one of the world&amp;#39;s most influential people for her various humanitarian endeavors. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;DIANE KEATON (1946 - )&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

Although she&amp;#39;s kept working since that peak -- unlike other actresses, such as Jill Clayburgh, who seemed to embody something very much of the moment for, well, a moment -- there&amp;#39;s a sense that Keaton doesn&amp;#39;t really get her full due, maybe because her moment is supposed to have passed. (She&amp;#39;s always criticized for being too &amp;quot;contemporary&amp;quot; when she plays period roles, even though she&amp;#39;s been brilliant in such movies as &lt;em&gt;Mrs. Soffel&lt;/em&gt;, where she springs Mel Gibson from a Pittsburgh jail at the turn of the century, and, of course, &lt;em&gt;Reds&lt;/em&gt;.)&amp;nbsp; Even when her career was red-hot after her Oscar win for Best Actress in &lt;em&gt;Annie Hall&lt;/em&gt;, her success in comedy and the relative dullness of her role in the &lt;em&gt;Godfather&lt;/em&gt; movies led to a false impression that she&amp;#39;s a funny woman wasted in heavy drama. This may have led to her being overpraised for her work in the strident &lt;em&gt;Looking for Mr. Goodbar&lt;/em&gt;, which came out the same year as &lt;em&gt;Annie Hall&lt;/em&gt;, but it also cost her full recognition for her greatest performance, in the stunning divorce drama &lt;em&gt;Shoot the Moon&lt;/em&gt; in 1982. She also gave a wrenching performance in &lt;em&gt;The Little Drummer Girl&lt;/em&gt;, reasserted her comedic chops carrying &lt;em&gt;Baby Boom&lt;/em&gt; to the finish line, partnered beautifully with Jessica Lange and Sissy Spacek for &lt;em&gt;Crimes of the Heart&lt;/em&gt;, re-teamed with Woody Allen for &lt;em&gt;Manhattan Murder Mystery&lt;/em&gt;, and directed for TV (including episodes of &lt;em&gt;Twin Peaks&lt;/em&gt;) and movies (including the oddball documentary &lt;em&gt;Heaven&lt;/em&gt; and the underrated &lt;em&gt;Unstrung Heroes&lt;/em&gt;). She also helped produce Gus Van Sant&amp;#39;s &lt;em&gt;Elephant&lt;/em&gt; and dabbled in real estate. Her biggest recent splash in movies was in 2003&amp;#39;s &lt;em&gt;Something&amp;#39;s Gotta Give&lt;/em&gt;, where she has a nude scene, the point of which was the horror that the sight of a naked woman only a decade younger than him inspired in her co-star Jack Nicholson. In fact, she looked pretty good -- certainly better than Nicholson does with his clothes &lt;em&gt;on&lt;/em&gt; -- and her performance (and unsurgically enhanced body) helped make the movie a hit among women who enjoyed seeing&amp;nbsp;Keaton getting hit on by Keanu Reeves. She can now be seen in TV commercials as the face of L&amp;#39;Oreal. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;MAE WEST (1893-1980) &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

Big deal. So were a million other women who don’t have nearly the reputation she does in the history of Hollywood. The reason that we’re writing about Mae West is because she took what was implicit in showbiz and made it explicit: her career, from beginning to end, was all about sex. Never before had anyone become so famous speaking so openly about what goes on between men and women – and she didn’t limit it to that paradigm, either. West was sexually experimental and was rumored to have had affairs with a number of women; and, despite the greater fag-hag veneration of Joan Crawford and Judy Garland, she was also one of the earliest advocates of gay rights, having written a sympathetic play about homosexual men as early as 1928. Oh, yeah: she was a writer, too. Always more than just a pretty face and a round set of hips, West was an engaging speaker, a witty and talented writer, and by all accounts, a legendarily adept improviser. (She said one of her greatest regrets is that she never got to share the screen with Groucho Marx, the only comic she considered her equal at thinking on one’s feet.) Like most people who considered sex a serious business, she couched much of her speculations about it in humor, but that didn’t save her from being repeatedly censored, censured, prosecuted (at least twice successfully) for obscenity, and banned from half the radio and television networks in the country. Some content themselves with a few weeks in the recording studio with top indie talent and the Tom Waits songbook, but Jena Malone has other ideas. The 23-year-old Malone, who made her acting debut at twelve in 1996&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;Bastard Out of Carolina&lt;/i&gt; and has since appeared in &lt;i&gt;Donnie Darko, Into the Wild&lt;/i&gt;, and, most recently, &lt;i&gt;The Ruins&lt;/i&gt;, has looking to make her mark in the mad-inventor-genius category, making her the Harry Partch of young indie starlets. Malone, who performs with a band called the Shoe, has built what she calls &amp;quot;a one woman instrument&amp;quot;. (As opposed to what, exactly? Is she also working on a banjo that takes six women to strum it?) The instrument is also called the Shoe, indicating that Malone is either really devoted to that word or that she prefers to channel her inspiration into areas other then naming things. Pitchfork Media reports that &lt;a href="http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/news/50840-jena-malone-builds-instrument-starts-label-busks"&gt;the band the Shoe&lt;/a&gt;, which consists of Malone and pianist Lem Jay Ignacio, &amp;quot;recently embarked on a busking tour of sorts around Los Angeles, one which finds them &amp;#39;only play[ing] on street corners and underpasses and on rooftops and living rooms,&amp;#39; according to Malone.&amp;quot; They&amp;#39;ve also recorded a six-song EP that they&amp;#39;ve been selling at gigs.

Malone, who may or may not still be working with her group &lt;a href="http://www.myspace.com/ofwildanimals"&gt;Jena Malone and Her Bloodstains&lt;/a&gt;, clearly takes her music seriously, and if she takes it seriously in kind of an unusual way, well, it&amp;#39;s unusual in a different, more cerebral way than, say, Juliette &amp;quot;Let&amp;#39;s kill a snake and drink its blood so we&amp;#39;ll be creatively inspired&amp;quot; Lewis. Reviewing a recent Shoe show in Los Angeles, &lt;a href="http://www.venuszine.com/articles/music/live_reviews/3318/Jena_Malones_Shoe_fits_nicely_into_quirky_LA_scene"&gt;Melissa Bobbitt&lt;/a&gt; described Shoe (the band), as a &amp;quot;beguiling&amp;quot; platform for Malone&amp;#39;s &amp;quot;insular, folksy, and wonderfully weird oeuvre&amp;quot; and also described the Shoe (the instrument) as a &amp;quot;curious contraption she built from random samplers, keyboards, and an old-fashioned steamer trunk. From it emerge squelches, squeaks, and other perplexing noises that suggest Malone isn’t content to play it safe in a town where Dogstar and the ilk are practically punch lines.&amp;quot; Whatever Malone&amp;#39;s up to, she&amp;#39;s smart enough to know that her film career is more likely to hurt her chances of being taken seriously at it, at least if she betrays any sense of entitlement, which may be why she&amp;#39;s favoring such limited-room venues as, in Bobbitt&amp;#39;s words, &amp;quot;a field alongside the depleted Los Angeles River, a rooftop, some dude’s living room … Just two 20-somethings, their musical wares and the hum of a generator — no pretense, just art.&amp;quot; It&amp;#39;s of a piece with the unaffected naturalness she&amp;#39;s brought to her movie roles. Night Shyamalan&amp;#39;s latest opus on the horizon, our thoughts are drifting to one of the best and worst things ever to happen to movies: the twist ending.&amp;nbsp; True, the twist ending hit oversaturation in the early &amp;#39;00s, when it seemed like every film ended with a tacked-on revelation that all the characters were dead or the same person or characters in a giant videogame or something. But film history is so full of con games, double-crosses and startling last-minute revelations that it would be a shame to lose the twist ending entirely.&amp;nbsp; Here&amp;#39;s an affectionate guide to the 5 kinds of surprise endings. And yes, many films fit into more than one category. Call it a twist. -- &lt;i&gt;Gwynne Watkins&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;#5 The Twilight Zone&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In The Twilight Zone, something seems wrong or off-kilter for the entire film, but it&amp;#39;s not entirely obvious what that thing is. When the twist is revealed, it creates a shift in perspective that can be easily explained in one sentence (such as the classic Twilight Zone example, &amp;quot;&lt;i&gt;To Serve Man&lt;/i&gt; -- it&amp;#39;s a cookbook!&amp;quot;) Films that do The Twilight Zone well include &lt;i&gt;The Others, Soylent Green&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;Swimming Pool&lt;/i&gt;. But when it&amp;#39;s bad, it&amp;#39;s very very bad; look no further than &lt;i&gt;The Village, &lt;/i&gt;a cautionary tale for screenwriters everywhere.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/05/23-End%20of%20Month/village.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/05/23-End%20of%20Month/village.jpg" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;#4 The Scooby Doo&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This is the twist ending that reveals all prior events in the film to be part of an elaborate hoax perpetrated by the characters. And they would have gotten away with it, too! It&amp;#39;s most commonly seen in con man movies -- &lt;i&gt;The Game, Matchstick Men, The Sting, The Spanish Prisoner&lt;/i&gt; -- although it&amp;#39;s cropped up to abysmal effect in &amp;quot;gotcha!&amp;quot; films like &lt;i&gt;Basic&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;The Life of David Gale&lt;/i&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/05/23-End%20of%20Month/thesting.jpg"&gt;&lt;img height="337" src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/05/23-End%20of%20Month/thesting.jpg" width="467" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;#3 The Donald Kaufman&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Named for Charlie Kaufman&amp;#39;s fictional screenwriter brother in &lt;i&gt;Adaptation&lt;/i&gt;, The Donald Kaufman is the big twist that ostensibly explains everything, but in fact, makes no sense whatsoever. The Donald Kaufman most often takes the form of &amp;quot;They&amp;#39;re both the same person!&amp;quot; or &amp;quot;It was all a dream!&amp;quot;&amp;nbsp;&lt;i&gt; Identity, High Tension&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;Femme Fatale&lt;/i&gt; are recent examples.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/05/23-End%20of%20Month/high%20tension.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/05/23-End%20of%20Month/high%20tension.jpg" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;#2 The Awful Truth&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Awful Truth is the sucker punch of twist endings: a revelation that turns the main character into a tragic figure. Think Luke Skywalker screaming &amp;quot;That&amp;#39;s not true! That&amp;#39;s impossible!&amp;quot; in &lt;i&gt;Empire Strikes Back&lt;/i&gt;, or the final shot of Rosebud in &lt;i&gt;Citizen Kane&lt;/i&gt;.&amp;nbsp; At best, it&amp;#39;s dramatically satisfying (see &lt;i&gt;Donnie Darko, Memento&lt;/i&gt; or &lt;i&gt;Seven&lt;/i&gt;); at worst, it makes you want to slap the filmmaker for being a total sadist (see &lt;i&gt;The Mist&lt;/i&gt;). &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/05/23-End%20of%20Month/fight%20club.jpg"&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/05/23-End%20of%20Month/empire%20strikes%20back.jpg"&gt;&lt;img height="348" src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/2008/05/23-End%20of%20Month/empire%20strikes%20back.jpg" width="591" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;#1 The 20/20 Hindsight &lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The hardest kind of twist ending to pull off successfully, The 20/20 Hindsight requires the viewer to sit through an entire movie without realizing that a twist ending is coming. Then, after what seems like the film&amp;#39;s resolution, the rug gets pulled out from under them. &lt;i&gt;The Sixth Sense&lt;/i&gt; and&lt;i&gt; The Usual Suspects &lt;/i&gt;are the classic examples; both have a fake-out ending that&amp;#39;s quite satisfying, then a last-minute revolution that turns the whole film on its ear. Or maybe a stepbrother, or just somebody who got ahold of its credit card number and is charging pizzas to its account. The planned sequel, &lt;i&gt;S. Darko&lt;/i&gt;, begins shooting next week and is going to be shopped around at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival. The film&amp;#39;s title refers to the character of Samantha Darko, who was Donnie&amp;#39;s sister in the original film and was played by Daviegh Chase. The plot will involve a road trip the now- eighteen-year-old Samantha takes with a friend, a trip that becomes complicated when they begin to experience &amp;quot;bizarre visions.&amp;quot; (Spoiler alert: Donnie himself, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, did not survive the conclusion of the first film.) Daveigh Chase will reprise her role in the new film, and that&amp;#39;s as close as it has to an actual, breathing connection to the original &lt;i&gt;Donnie Darko&lt;/i&gt;. The $10-million production will be directed by Chris Fisher, who directed and co-wrote &lt;i&gt;Dirty&lt;/i&gt;, a crooked-cop drama starring Cuba Cooding, Jr., and horror flicks about real-life murderers Richard (&amp;quot;Night Stalker&amp;quot;) Ramirez and the Hillside Strangler. Fisher says that &amp;quot;I am a great admirer of Richard Kelly&amp;#39;s film and hope to create a similar world of blurred fantasy and reality.&amp;quot; Simon Crowe, of the production company Velvet Octopus, chimes in: &amp;quot;I think there is a new generation of cinema-goers who will be very excited to see this film.&amp;quot;

Whatever generation he has in mind, it does not appear that Richard Kelly is among their number. &lt;a href="http://cinemascopian.com/2008/05/12/richard-kelly-on-that-donnie-darko-sequel/"&gt;Cinemascope reports&lt;/a&gt; on Kelly&amp;#39;s official reaction: &amp;quot;Over the last couple of days, a few people have asked me what’s up with &amp;#39;this &lt;i&gt;Donnie Darko&lt;/i&gt; sequel.&amp;#39; So to set the record straight, here’s a few facts I’d like to share with you all - I haven’t read this script. I have absolutely no involvement with this production, nor will I ever be involved. I have no control over the rights from our original film, and neither I nor my producing partner Sean McKittrick stand to make any money from this film.&amp;quot; Reaction from fans has been swift, too: there&amp;#39;s &lt;a href="http://www.petitiononline.com/sdarko/petition.html"&gt;already a petition&lt;/a&gt; on-line devoted to shutting the damn thing down. (Quick, somebody call Sprite Gum!) It&amp;#39;s not exactly the first time that some hack has threatened to grind out a string of sausage movies &amp;quot;based&amp;quot; on an original that deserves to be treated with more respect. (Can you say &lt;i&gt;The Stepfather II: Father&amp;#39;s Day&lt;/i&gt;?) But it&amp;#39;s definitely a cheeky move to try this sort of thing with such a beloved art-cult object, especially given how long it took for Richard Kelly himself to start reaping some benefits from &lt;i&gt;Donnie Darko&lt;/i&gt; itself. It&amp;#39;s an odd creature, this &lt;i&gt;Charlie Bartlett&lt;/i&gt; — thick with references to &lt;i&gt;Rushmore&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;Harold and Maude&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;Ferris Bueller&amp;#39;s Day Off&lt;/i&gt;, it feels persistently unreal, untempered by real-life experience of high school. The &amp;quot;drug&amp;quot; sequences seem to come from someone less familiar with altered states than with the pot montage in &lt;i&gt;The Breakfast Club&lt;/i&gt;, and a key virginity loss is mysteriously set inside a scene from &lt;i&gt;Sixteen Candles&lt;/i&gt;. You might find this annoying, or you might find yourself getting wistful for the worst years of your life.

Charlie (Anton Yelchin) has been booted out of every private school in the state — not for bad grades, of course, but for persistent attention-seeking prankery. He&amp;#39;s desperate for popularity, and at his new public school, he finds it by psychoanalyzing his classmates and prescribing them medication via the bevy of shrinks thrown at him by his doting, overbearing mother (Hope Davis, who chastizes him for not eating his dinner with the line, &amp;quot;I&amp;#39;ve cooked you a perfectly Oedipal meal&amp;quot; — or at least that&amp;#39;s how I heard it). Simultaneously, he befriends a bully (one Tyler Hilton, who looks far too much like a young Morrissey to be threatening) and romances the principal&amp;#39;s daughter (Kat Dennings, of &lt;i&gt;The 40-Year-Old Virgin&lt;/i&gt;). But the principal himself (Robert Downey, Jr., entertaining as ever) turns out to be a problem, though not too much of a problem to resolve in a ludicrous climax. Basically, this is not the next &lt;i&gt;Rushmore&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;Donnie Darko&lt;/i&gt; or even &lt;i&gt;Ferris Bueller&lt;/i&gt;, despite Charlie&amp;#39;s preference for a Bueller-esque shades-and-beret combo. It&amp;#39;s not without fun, though. But now that, as John Waters says, what was once shocking has been fully co-opted by Hollywood, so that everything from &lt;em&gt;Hostel&lt;/em&gt; to &lt;em&gt;South Park&lt;/em&gt; is mainstream entertainment, the best way to go about it seems to be to confuse people. A few years ago, &lt;em&gt;Salon&lt;/em&gt;, in its function as a daily manual for the intelligent cool-hunter, was so impressed by the head-scratching qualities exhibited by David Lynch&amp;#39;s &lt;em&gt;Mulholland Drive&lt;/em&gt; and Richard Kelly&amp;#39;s &lt;em&gt;Donnie Darko&lt;/em&gt; that it provided handy skeleton keys to help guide the baffled viewer through both movies. Now, &lt;a href="http://www.salon.com/ent/movies/feature/2007/12/19/southland_tales_analysis/"&gt;writer Thomas Rogers has whipped up an explanatory gloss on Kelly&amp;#39;s new film, &lt;em&gt;Southland Tales&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/a&gt;. (It should perhaps be noted that, in keeping with the insular nature of the pursuit of the coolest movie in the world, &lt;em&gt;Southland Tales&lt;/em&gt; explicitly references &lt;em&gt;Mulholland Drive&lt;/em&gt;, along with &lt;em&gt;Kiss Me Deadly&lt;/em&gt;, Philip K. Dick, T. S. Eliot, Robert Frost, and God knows what else.) &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As a large-scale directorial achievement, &lt;em&gt;Southland Tales&lt;/em&gt; is impressive, and I can honestly say that, watching it, I was never bored. I also felt like I had less of a grasp on what it was supposed to mean when the closing credits rolled than I did when I walked into the theater. What&amp;#39;s remarkable about Rogers&amp;#39;s article is that now that I&amp;#39;ve read it, I feel more confused than ever. Besides the fact that some key scenes are filmed and edited in a way that makes them really difficult to follow, there&amp;#39;s a phenomenal amount of complex back story to the characters, their world, and the events they&amp;#39;re caught up in that the audience simply isn&amp;#39;t made privy to in the course of watching the picture. Kelly, who extensively re-edited the picture after its premiere at Cannes, losing an entire subplot involving Janeane Garofalo and adding voice-over narration intended to meet the viewer halfway, has also written three so-called &amp;quot;graphic novels&amp;quot; (in my apartment, we read &amp;quot;comic books&amp;quot; and are proud of it) that have been collected as &lt;em&gt;Southland Tales: The Prequel Saga&lt;/em&gt;; it seems that anyone who hopes to understand the movie better would be well advised to read them and, you know, I might just do that one of these days. Rogers makes it clear that anyone looking to better understand the movie would also be well advised to grab a copy of the New Testament and make a deep study of the Book of Revelations and, okay, I probably wouldn&amp;#39;t do that even if it was guaranteed to help me better understand my ex-girlfriends. It comes down to the individual to decide whether just getting Kelly&amp;#39;s alternate-universe apocalyptic fantasies is worth this much work. Kelly may be one of the first filmmakers of the Information Age, building mixed-media collages that can&amp;#39;t be fully appreciated on their own until you&amp;#39;ve read the comic book, seen the director&amp;#39;s cut on DVD, diagrammed the interviews, checked out the YouTube ephemera, etc. He might also just be a talented but undisciplined guy making a mess. In other words, he&amp;#39;s the same soulless killing machine, but on a humane mission instead of a lethal one. So how does he acquire emotions, attachments and embarrassing slang words over the course of the film? That mystery is explained in this deleted scene, in which Sarah removes an inhibitor chip from the Terminator&amp;#39;s head. (Fun fact: given the limits of special effects in 1991, the mirror effect was achieved by having Linda Hamilton perform surgery on a dummy head, while Hamilton&amp;#39;s twin sister — seriously — stood on the other side of the mirror with actual Arnold.) The scene also includes a confrontation between Connor and her son which fundamentally changes the dynamic of their relationship, allowing him to take over as leader. Guest films hours and hours of documentary-style footage for his improvised comedies, only a fraction of which end up in the final film. The DVD versions of &lt;em&gt;This is Spinal Tap&lt;/em&gt; (which he co-wrote but didn&amp;#39;t direct), &lt;em&gt;Best in Show&lt;/em&gt; and &lt;em&gt;A Mighty Wind&lt;/em&gt; are loaded with hilarious (and sometimes shockingly dark) deleted scenes. But our favorite is this giddy extended climax from &lt;em&gt;Waiting for Guffman&lt;/em&gt;.&lt;em&gt; Guffman&lt;/em&gt; follows a small-town community theater troupe as they cast, rehearse and perform an original musical, all the while increasingly convinced that they&amp;#39;re heading to Broadway. This deleted musical number is an ingenious musical theater parody — with production values that are comparable to &lt;em&gt;actual&lt;/em&gt; Broadway. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;THE HOTEL CONFESSION SCENE, &lt;em&gt;SUPERMAN II &lt;/em&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

The theatrical version of the film is a hybrid of Lester and Donner scenes, and for years after its release, rumors swirled that a better film — the Donner cut — was buried in the Warner Brothers vaults. When the Donner cut finally came to DVD in 2006, it was a mixed blessing: on one hand, it&amp;#39;s very clearly an unfinished film. On the other hand, it contains some marked improvements over the theatrical release. This scene, in which Lois cleverly forces Clark to reveal his identity as Superman, is one of those improvements. It packs far more of a dramatic wallop than the &amp;quot;oops-i-dropped-my-glasses-in-the-fire&amp;quot; reveal from the Lester version. Perhaps the ultimate deleted scene, this one was never actually filmed; it was edited together from Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder&amp;#39;s separate screen tests. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;DAVID DUNN AND THE PRIEST, &lt;em&gt;UNBREAKABLE &lt;/em&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

Night Shyamalan&amp;#39;s hushed, atmospheric follow-up to &lt;em&gt;The Sixth Sense&lt;/em&gt;, tells the story of David Dunn (Bruce Willis), a stressed-out family man who survives a horrific train crash. When David realizes that he was the &lt;em&gt;only&lt;/em&gt; survivor — and no one can offer him an adequate explanation — he begins to explore the possibility that he may be something other than an ordinary human being. It&amp;#39;s a clever premise, and &lt;em&gt;Unbreakable&lt;/em&gt; is an underrated film, but there are some serious gaps in logic — i.e., how has David passed his fortieth birthday without ever realizing he&amp;#39;s invulnerable? This deleted scene offers some much-needed insight. It also toys nicely with the stock character of the cinematic priest; we expect him to talk about fate and God&amp;#39;s plan, which he does, but not in the way you&amp;#39;re thinking. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;THE PUMPKIN CARVING SCENE, &lt;em&gt;DONNIE DARKO &lt;/em&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

The original theatrical release has a pervasive sense of mystery, and the film&amp;#39;s unanswered questions are part of its appeal. That said, every new scene between Donnie and his family deepens the impact of the film&amp;#39;s time-twisting climax. This one is our favorite.
