You’ll just have to find out about them somewhere else.  I wish I could say we’ve saved the best for last, but we can only work with what they give us.

Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz will reunite for James Mangold’s &lt;i&gt;Wichita&lt;/i&gt;.  It is not the story of a lineman who’s still on the line.  “The script has been through many machinations, but the most recent drafts were done by Scott Frank, with Mangold currently fine-tuning the script with Laeta Kalogridis (&lt;i&gt;Shutter Island&lt;/i&gt;). Two-hander has several action scenes. Cruise will play a secret agent who pops in and out of the life of a single woman,” &lt;a href="http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118004229.html?categoryid=13" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;i&gt;Variety&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/a&gt; reports.

Kevin Smith has found another pair of dicks.  “Seann William Scott and Adam Brody are joining Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan in Warner Bros.&amp;#39; &lt;i&gt;A Couple of Dicks&lt;/i&gt;,” Smith’s new buddy action comedy, per &lt;a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/film/news/e3ib33b6009e7cf5f3f17eca0e334300888" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;i&gt;The Hollywood Reporter&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/a&gt;.  Smith did not write the script, which is by script Robb and Mark Cullen, and “follows a maverick cop (Willis) and his partner (Morgan) who, while tracking a valuable stolen baseball card, tangle with a memorabilia-obsessed gangster and rescue a Mexican beauty who holds the key to millions in laundered drug money.”
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Also, there will be another &lt;i&gt;Batman&lt;/i&gt; movie, another &lt;i&gt;Star Trek&lt;/i&gt;, another James Bond, and at some point, probably another &lt;i&gt;King Kong&lt;/i&gt; remake.  Save us the aisle seat!

Some people claim they caught wise to Shyamalan’s scheme the second Donnie Wahlberg’s buff, naked psychopath shot Bruce Willis’ mumbly psychiatrist in the gut, but I’m not one of them...and as an online screenwriting teacher (&lt;a class="" href="https://www.uclaextension.edu/r/InstructorBio.aspx?instid=26910"&gt;at UCLA Extension...summer courses forming now!&lt;/a&gt;), I regularly praise the sleight-of-hand brio of the scene above. We see Willis’ character shot dead right in front of our eyes, then in the next scene it’s two years later and he’s sitting on a park bench, seemingly alive. It’s a neat trick, and for the majority of us who didn’t stop and go, “Hey, wait a minute...” it led to a clever, head-slapping reveal that Shyamalan achieved fair and square without cheating (hello, ridiculous &lt;em&gt;Mission Impossible&lt;/em&gt; &amp;quot;Jon Voight&amp;quot; mask) or bending the willing suspension of disbelief to the breaking point (so...they set up a fake 19th century society &lt;em&gt;with&lt;/em&gt; monsters but&amp;nbsp;&lt;em&gt;without&lt;/em&gt; antibiotics? Does anyone ever actually &lt;em&gt;read&lt;/em&gt; Shyamalan’s scripts before they go into production?). Reconfiguring the classic boogeyman-under-the-bed scenario into a boogeyman-&lt;em&gt;inside&lt;/em&gt;-the-bed nightmare, Depp’s last scene finds him (and his TV) being pulled into a mattress by the gloved hand of Freddy Krueger. Out of the hole created by this supernatural incident comes a horrific eruption of blood made all the more chilling by its reverse-gravitational movement, the red geyser coating the ceiling without besmirching anything else in the room. So what? Leonard Nimoy knew what he was doing when he didn’t come back to give Spock a final sendoff in &lt;em&gt;Star Trek: Generations&lt;/em&gt;; he’d already done it to perfection here. Taking the reigns of the &lt;em&gt;Trek&lt;/em&gt; franchise, Nicholas Meyer crafted a genuine emotional epiphany from a pop artifact and set the series on a steady course for decades to come. If I can’t ride a nuclear bomb to my death (see below), at least let me be shot out of a spaceship while Scotty plays the bagpipes. They’re longtime neighbors on Mulholland Drive, they’ve co-starred in &lt;em&gt;The Fortune&lt;/em&gt; and &lt;em&gt;Reds&lt;/em&gt;, and throughout the &amp;#39;70s and &amp;#39;80s, they shared a similar rep as Hollywood bad boys and incurable ladies’ men. They also tend to die at the end of their movies, so it’s probably not too surprising that, at some point, they would each find themselves frozen in snow as the final credits roll. As our own Hayden Childs put it last week in our countdown of &lt;a class="" href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2009/05/14/screengrab-presents-the-top-ten-best-movies-ever-part-three.aspx"&gt;Best Movies Ever&lt;/a&gt;, McCabe’s “final stand, his big gun battle, is as unimportant to the town of Presbyterian Church as Icarus plunging into the sea in Pieter Brueghal&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;Landscape with the Fall of Icarus&lt;/i&gt;.” In &lt;em&gt;The Shining&lt;/em&gt;, Nicholson dies as a howling monster, a wounded minotaur loose in the maze, but whereas McCabe may be instantly forgotten, Jack Torrance has always been and will always be the caretaker. Natalie Portman, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Rainn Wilson will headline the “indie dramedy” &lt;a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/film/news/e3ide2664960311f86428d147ff550612b7" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;i&gt;Hesher&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/a&gt;.  “The story centers on a loser twentysomething who invades the life of an awkward 13-year-old who is living with a pill-popping father and grandmother. Gordon-Levitt is playing the title character, a good and bad influence on the boy&amp;#39;s life. Wilson is the dad trying to keep his family together after the death of his wife. Portman, who is producing the film with Lucy Cooper, plays a supermarket worker for whom the kid falls for after she saves him from a bully.”

The French thriller &lt;i&gt;Tell No One &lt;/i&gt;will get the American remake treatment.  “Miramax and Focus will co-develop the project, still in early stages of development. No director or cast have been attached although a start date of spring 2010 has been tentatively set for principal photography,” &lt;a href="http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118002992.html?categoryid=13&amp;amp;cs=1" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;i&gt;Variety&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/a&gt; reports.

The story “follows a young woman named Aspen who learns she is a member of a race of aquatic humanoids who possess the ability to control water.”  Aquaman, eat your heart out.

Kevin Smith has two stars and a new title for his project formerly known as &lt;i&gt;A Couple of Dicks&lt;/i&gt;.  The newly titled &lt;i&gt;A Couple of Cops&lt;/i&gt; will star Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan in Smith’s major studio debut for Warner Bros., “centered on a pair of cops who track down a stolen baseball card, rescue a Mexican beauty and must deal with gangsters and laundered drug money,” per &lt;a href="http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118000804.html?categoryid=13&amp;amp;cs=1" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;i&gt;Variety&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/a&gt;.

To begin with, it was based on Tom Wolfe’s first fiction book, which had been widely read in serialized form in &lt;i&gt;Rolling Stone&lt;/i&gt; before becoming a bestseller upon its publication as a novel. The director was Brian De Palma, who made his reputation with a series of kinky, Hitchcock-inspired thrillers during the seventies before branching out into more mainstream fare such as &lt;i&gt;Scarface&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;The Untouchables&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;Casualties of War&lt;/i&gt;. With a wildly popular novel and an A-list director, Warner Bros. had visions of Oscars dancing in their heads, and they consequently filled the cast with big names, from recent Oscar nominees Tom Hanks, Melanie Griffith, and Morgan Freeman to newly anointed action superstar Bruce Willis, and backed them with plenty of first-rate character actors.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ideally, &lt;i&gt;The Bonfire of the Vanities&lt;/i&gt; should have been one of the biggest movie events of 1990. But then, if it had been, I would be writing about it in my Yesterday’s Hits column instead of When Good Directors Go Bad. As it stands, the big-screen adaptation remains one of the most notorious fiascos in Hollywood history, earning back a mere $15 million of its then-extravagant $50 million budget, and receiving mostly savage reviews. As a De Palma fan of long standing- I’m the guy who liked &lt;i&gt;The Black Dahlia&lt;/i&gt;, after all- I’d like to say that the film was merely misunderstood, but even I have to admit that it’s a failure.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Part of the problem is the casting of the principal roles, from the top on down. If you were casting the role of an ambitious commodities trader and self-anointed “Master of the Universe”, whose name would come to mind? Michael Douglas? Tom Cruise, perhaps? But after Warner Bros. deemed the character too unsympathetic on the page, they decided to cast Tom Hanks in the role, which is sort of like casting Jimmy Stewart as Gordon Gekko. Also problematic was the casting of Willis. The character of journalist Peter Fallow was written as a dissolute Brit (the role was originally offered to John Cleese), but Willis ended up being cast for marquee value, and gave one of his laziest performances, smirking his way through the role and pissing off most of the people involved with the production with his ego.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Worst of all is Griffith. During the eighties, Griffith’s dumb-blonde persona proved to be surprisingly adaptable to a number of filmmakers’ visions, from the tart-with-a-heart of Jonathan Demme’s &lt;i&gt;Something Wild&lt;/i&gt; to the streetwise porn star of De Palma’s own &lt;i&gt;Body Double&lt;/i&gt;. However, the role of Maria Ruskin was far beyond her limited talent. On the page, Maria may be the trickiest character in the novel, a wily manipulator whose ditzy façade hides a pitch-black heart. But Griffith can only manage the ditzy part, so when the character begins to reveal her shameless nature after Sherman’s life begins to go down the tubes we never believe it. The two halves of her personality- sexy and cunning- never mesh convincingly, so rather than lacing her manipulations with an erotic charge, her dark side makes the sexy stuff creepy, which surely wasn’t what the film was aiming for.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But while the casting issues might have been out of De Palma’s hands, he’s far from blameless. Admittedly, Wolfe’s novel is something of a tough nut to crack, &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/Bonfire.jpg"&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/brian_de_palma.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/brian_de_palma.jpg" align="right" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;simultaneously a cross-section of New York City life, a morality tale, and a savage takedown of the craven greed and ambition that fueled the eighties. However, it fails on all three counts. Much of its power as a snapshot of the Big Apple’s social strata is lost because its characters are sketchy and one-dimensional, a problem that might have been partially alleviated by spot-on casting, but not entirely. Likewise, the film places its morality tale aspects on the back burner for most of its running time, only to have judge/voice of reason Morgan Freeman bust out an extended monologue about decency in the film’s final five minutes, at which point it comes off as a tacked-on moral rather than a natural outgrowth of the story.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This leaves only the exposé aspect of the story. In nearly 700 pages, Wolfe was able to lay bare the motivations of nearly all of the major players in the story, from Sherman, Maria and Peter, to the lawyers, politicians and community leaders who opportunistically seized upon his case for their own personal gain. Without the time to do this onscreen, De Palma instead focuses on the circus (political and media-driven) that ensues. But while a more assured comic filmmaker might have been able to spin even an abbreviated &lt;i&gt;Bonfire&lt;/i&gt; into a bitter little pill (imagine what an &lt;i&gt;Ace in the Hole&lt;/i&gt;-era Billy Wilder might have done with this material), De Palma brings almost nothing to the material aside from the liberal use of unflattering wide-angle close-ups to underline the grotesqueness of the characters. Sure, there are a handful of cool camera tricks- especially the&amp;nbsp;nearly five-minute-long opening Steadican shot-&amp;nbsp;but for the most part they don’t really work in the context of the story, and mostly just call attention to themselves. I hate to use a criticism that De Palma’s detractors are wont to levy at him, but in this case, they’re right.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the end, the biggest failing of &lt;i&gt;The Bonfire of the Vanities&lt;/i&gt; is one of tone. The scathing satire of the original novel was replaced by a more hamfisted style that was both broad and shrill. A few of the jabs hit (I love how Andre Gregory’s poet is introduced: “he’s on the shortlist for the Nobel Prize. He has AIDS.”), but most of the time they whiff. Scenes like the one where Maria’s cuckold husband (Alan King) suddenly dies in mid-conversation or the famous “crumbs” monologue by Sherman’s wife might have worked on the page, but they flounder and die onscreen, the former because it’s not inherently funny to see a minor character kick the bucket, the latter because &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/Bonfire.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/Bonfire.jpg" align="right" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;Kim Cattrall plays the character as such a high-strung harpy that it’s hard to focus on anything she says.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now, it’s entirely possible that Ebert was right when he wrote that &lt;i&gt;The Bonfire of the Vanities&lt;/i&gt; might be enjoyable to those who are unfamiliar with the book. But I wouldn’t bet on it. De Palma and the studio took a powerful and lacerating story and adapted it in the most pedestrian way possible, and replaced the prickly citizens of Wolfe’s New York City with characters who are both cartoonish and, worse, uninteresting. If anything good came out of my watching &lt;i&gt;Bonfire&lt;/i&gt; again, it’s that I’ve been inspired to re-read the book, to immerse myself in Wolfe’s language and marvel at the world he created. When &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2008/09/19/star-trek-showdown-shatner-fires-back.aspx" target="_blank"&gt;last we checked in&lt;/a&gt; with the YouTube sensation &lt;i&gt;William Shatner is Off His Meds&lt;/i&gt;, the Shat Man had a bone to pick with new &lt;i&gt;Star Trek&lt;/i&gt; auteur J.J. Abrams.  Shatner (enabled by his daughter Liz) claimed that he had never been approached to make a cameo appearance in the new movie, and went on to offer some advice as to how Captain Kirk could be resurrected for the film.  (It’s as simple as putting his DNA in the hovering machine and throwing the switch on the right, after all.)  Now Shatner is compelled to comment on the news that, unlike many of his former &lt;i&gt;Star Trek&lt;/i&gt; cohorts, he was not invited to George “Sulu” Takei’s big gay wedding.

Way back when he wrote the first volume of his &lt;i&gt;Star Trek Memories&lt;/i&gt; in 1994, Shatner was startled to learn that most of his co-stars from the original series considered him to be something of a dick.  Takei elaborated in his own memoir, &lt;i&gt;To the Stars&lt;/i&gt;, in which he complained of Shatner stealing lines and close-ups from him, and even went so far as to claim on the Howard Stern show that the Shat had denied Sulu a promotion to captain.  So it’s not like there’s no crazy at all to be found on the Takei side of this story…but Shatner really outdoes himself in this latest clip.  Who knows what he thinks he’s up to here?  It would be nice to think he’s playing the character of “William Shatner, Unhinged Asshole,” sort of like Larry David on &lt;i&gt;Curb Your Enthusiasm&lt;/i&gt; or Bruce Willis in &lt;i&gt;What Just Happened&lt;/i&gt;, but…well, judge for yourself:

The closer you get to the present day, the uglier his career gets, and the more it appears he&amp;#39;s just in it these days for the paychecks that will get him into the better restaurants.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; When I sat down for a viewing of his latest, &lt;i&gt;What Just Happened&lt;/i&gt;, I wasn&amp;#39;t expecting much, especially since his comic track record hasn&amp;#39;t been stellar since &lt;i&gt;Midnight Run&lt;/i&gt;.&amp;nbsp; The fact that the film&amp;#39;s author, Art Linson, is a friend of DeNiro&amp;#39;s was also unpromising, since such nepotistic endeavors flatter the friendship over the art, and what&amp;#39;s more, it&amp;#39;s an inside-Hollywood movie, which has produced its share of great films, but more than its share of stinkers.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;I won&amp;#39;t say that it&amp;#39;s a triumph for DeNiro, or even a return to form, but most of the movie&amp;#39;s failings -- of which there aren&amp;#39;t enough for me to call it bad -- are those of Barry Levinson&amp;#39;s uninspired direction and a somewhat aimless and formless script.&amp;nbsp; DeNiro doesn&amp;#39;t turn in the kind of legendary performance he was once known for, but that&amp;#39;s only because the script doesn&amp;#39;t let him.&amp;nbsp; In fact, his role as frazzled middle-aged movie producer Ben -- a stand-in for Linson -- is one of his finest in years:&amp;nbsp; he never explodes only because he&amp;#39;s too ineffectual and harried to aspire to an explosion.&amp;nbsp; It&amp;#39;s a tight, focused, and highly competent performance as a man nearing the end of his rope and no idea of what to do when he gets there, but because he&amp;#39;s in such an absurd profession, and surrounded by such grandly dysfunctional people, that circumstance is understood -- by him and by us -- to be comic instead of tragic.&amp;nbsp; It&amp;#39;s a performance that won&amp;#39;t remind anyone of Travis Bickle or Rupert Pupkin, but it should definitely remind them that DeNiro still has a few surprises left in him.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;It&amp;#39;s in this inherent unseriousness that the picture succeeds in its modest way.&amp;nbsp; Everyone in the film carries on as if the fate of the world revolves around the decisions they make based on egomania, resentment and cowardice, and the laughs come from the fact that their utter irrelevance even in their own lives manages to create an aura of sustained menance and philosophical unease even as we see DeNiro haplessly trying to convince a self-satisfied auteur that audiences won&amp;#39;t enjoy the brutal on-screen slaughter of a dog as much as he does.&amp;nbsp; He&amp;#39;s also assisted by a cast that, in the tradition of the better inside-baseball movies about movies, likewise are willing to take the piss, most especially John Turturro as his omniphobic agent and Bruce Willis, performing what appears to be an unbelievably heartless parody of Bruce Willis.&amp;nbsp; Straddling the line between the revolutionary filmmaking of the 1970s and the tail end of classic Hollywood, &lt;i&gt;Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid&lt;/i&gt; is one of those movies that isn’t legendary because it’s important, or because it’s meaningful, or because it broke some rich new ground in the language of filmmaking.  It’s legendary because it’s funny, fun, and incredibly entertaining.  It’s also one of those films where everyone seems to be firing on all cylinders; the sly buddy-western could easily be counted as a career high for Robert Redford, director George Roy Hill and his cameraman Connie Hall, screenwriter William Goldman, and even composer Burt Bacharach.  But Paul Newman is the glue that holds everything together:  taking on Goldman’s witty dialogue, he gives it just enough of a human, weary edge that it doesn’t seem as over-the-top as it might coming from some actors.  Some performers go their whole lives without snaring a part like Butch Cassidy, and others get one, but handle it all wrong.  You sometimes hear actors referred to as intelligent, but rarely movie stars; it’s a testament to how bright Paul Newman was that he was handed a role as rich as this one and figured it out immediately, playing it on screen as perfectly as it could be played. This is a real movie star role, and Newman handles it like a real movie star.

3. NOBODY’S FOOL (1994) &amp;amp; THE VERDICT (1982)

I’ll admit I&amp;#39;m cheating here, attempting to squeeze an eleventh film into this Top Ten list, but I simply couldn’t decide which late-period Newman film I liked best, so I figured I’d call it a tie.  Two sides of the same rumpled coin, &lt;i&gt;The Verdict&lt;/i&gt;’s beaten-down Boston lawyer Frank Galvin, fighting an impossible battle against the Catholic Church, and Sully, the beaten-down small town ne’er-do-well Newman plays in &lt;i&gt;Nobody’s Fool&lt;/i&gt; are both men with no expectations of success or happiness in their lonely lives who nevertheless find redemption despite and because of their own stubborn tenacity.  One of the hallmarks of Newman’s career was the Mercedes caliber acting, writing and directing he seemed to attract to most of his star vehicles, and these two films more than hold their own with regard to above-the-line talent.  Charlotte Rampling, Jack Warden, James Mason and helmer Sidney Lumet provide typically stellar support in &lt;i&gt;The Verdict&lt;/i&gt;, but one of the pleasures of &lt;i&gt;Nobody’s Fool&lt;/i&gt; is watching Newman (and acclaimed co-stars like Jessica Tandy and Phillip Seymour Hoffman) bring out the best in frequently wasted and underestimated actors like Bruce Willis (in a supporting role as a big fish businessman in a small upstate New York pond) and Melanie Griffith (happily erasing memories of their previous on-screen pairing in &lt;i&gt;Bonfire of the Vanities&lt;/i&gt; as Willis’ dissatisfied trophy wife).  Yet despite all the impressive talent surrounding him, Newman is the heart and soul of both films, dominating them with master class, world-weary performances that just make you want to punch the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences right in the face for awarding him his only Best Actor Oscar for &lt;i&gt;The Color of&lt;/i&gt; freakin’ &lt;i&gt;Money&lt;/i&gt;.

&lt;b&gt;2. HUD (1963)
&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

Newman never took his anti-hero routine farther into &amp;quot;anti-&amp;quot; territory than in this family drama, set in a dusty, unromantic modern Texas. He plays the title role, which turns out &lt;i&gt;not&lt;/i&gt; to be that of the Department of Housing and Urban Development but rather a selfish but dashing heel who, in the context of a small rural town situated on the wrong end of the 1960s, qualifies as about as hot as hot shit gets. &lt;i&gt;Hud&lt;/i&gt; roughly fits the mold but finally breaks the tradition of such earlier Hollywood characters as the Bogart heroes, who were always talking about how they stuck their neck out for nobody and only cared about keeping their own hides safe and comfortable because Hud really &lt;i&gt;means&lt;/i&gt; it; he remains defiantly unredeemed to the movie&amp;#39;s end. Seen as daring in its day, the movie actually risks being too morally clear-cut. What keeps it alive and spiky after all these years is that, thanks to Newman, it&amp;#39;s hard not to feel closer to this bastard than to his pure and  upright antagonists, the boringly earnest young man (Brandon De Wilde) who has to learn to see through him, and the crotchety father (Melvyn Douglas) who seems to have been judging him as harshly as possible for every minute of their shared lives, and who finally seems to die of impacted self-righteousness...especially since Newman and the director, Martin Ritt, seemed to understand something real about the sensual attractiveness of evil: in this, the least sympathetic role of the first half of his career, Newman was probably sexier than he&amp;#39;d ever been before, which is saying something.

&lt;b&gt;1. THE HUSTLER (1961)

Newman entered his second decade as a movie star, and established himself as a man with staying power, as Fast Eddie Felsen, the cocky pool shark who&amp;#39;s set on proving himself a winner -- which he does, though at the loss of his innocence, a girl (Piper Laurie), and the game that&amp;#39;s the only thing he&amp;#39;s ever been able to claim to be the best at. In addition to the tart dialogue and the opportunity to go head-to-head with George C. Scott (at the peak of his powers as a sly stealer of scenes) and Jackie Gleason (in the most pleasingly assured dramatic performance of his life), the role gave Newman the chance to grow up on camera. In the final battle of the billiard balls, he trades in the self-infatuated, head-jiggling grins and showy flare-ups of the early scenes for a quiet gravity, with suggestions of violent emotions kept under powerful control beneath the surface. It was a good indicator of just how well the actor himself would be able to weather the aging process in the years to come, steadily improving with time while the careers of so many of his contemporaries receded to the background or turned brown at the edges.

Given the reception to Aronofsky&amp;#39;s last movie, &lt;i&gt;The Fountain&lt;/i&gt;, his new one (which won the Best Film prize at the recent Venice Film Festival) would qualify as a back-from-the-dead comeback even if it starred Michael Phelps, but the fact that it&amp;#39;s a Mickey Rourke movie--the first time that Rourke has claimed &lt;i&gt;the&lt;/i&gt; starring role in a full-length, non-multiple-story movie in many a moon--makes it even bigger news. For weeks on end, I slept on the couch at the Actors Studio, working on scenes nonstop.&amp;quot; And when he followed up his scene-stealing small role as an arsonist named Teddy in &lt;i&gt;Body Heat&lt;/i&gt; with his performance as the overgrown tomcat Boogie in the ensemble picture &lt;i&gt;Diner&lt;/i&gt;, a lot of people were very impressed with his charisma, his seductiveness, his &amp;quot;look into my eyes&amp;quot; audience rapport, and his ability to overcome playing characters with really dopey names. Thinking back on what happened next, Rourke says, &amp;quot;I look at these guys like Matt Damon, George Clooney, Sean Penn—they&amp;#39;re all very bright, educated guys who understand that it&amp;#39;s a business and there&amp;#39;s politics involved. I wasn&amp;#39;t educated or aware enough. I thought I was so good I didn&amp;#39;t have to play the game. And I was terribly wrong.&amp;quot;
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Here, as in his other post-crash interviews, Rourke is admirable in his insistence on blaming himself for screwing up his career. Still, talk of office politics can scarcely convey how weirdly Rourke began to handle himself, and to style himself, as soon as he began to get a little control over his movie roles. In such horndog entertainments as &lt;i&gt;9 1/2 Weeks&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;Wild Orchid&lt;/i&gt;, he seemed to be trying to prove that, given the right wardrobe, leading ladies, and exotic locales, even a Miami boy could qualify as Eurotrash. In &lt;i&gt;Angel Heart&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;Barfly&lt;/i&gt;, he continued to bang away at his female co-stars like a screen door during a typhoon, while also demonstrating his &amp;quot;authenticity&amp;quot; as a manly Method actor by reporting to work looking as if he&amp;#39;d been tied to the back bumper of a jeep and dragged through a swamp. All this time, he was living far beyond his means and turning down roles in movies that might have made his status in Hollywood a lot sturdier. Meanwhile, stories about his unmanageable behavior on the set and the storm surrounding his on-again, off-again marriage to his &lt;i&gt;Wild Orchid&lt;/i&gt; co-star Carre&amp;#39; Otis (who accused, and then non-accused him, of spousal abuse) were helping to turn him into a joke. Rourke dates the point of no return to his decision to co-star with Don Johnson in the 1991 &lt;i&gt;Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man&lt;/i&gt;. The movie was a critically derided bomb, and for once Rourke, who had done it because he desperately needed the money, couldn&amp;#39;t claim to have had any grand artistic hopes for the finished product. &amp;quot;They paid me a lot of money, and I went fuckin&amp;#39; bonkers because I sold out and I hated myself for it. Some kind of anger kicked off, about the fact that I&amp;#39;d put myself in a position to have to do that movie. The demons took over.&amp;quot; Rourke&amp;#39;s sense of shame over having done the kind of movie that most stars routinely laugh off drove him to abandon acting for several years and take up professional boxing, a sport he had practiced as an amateur back in the early seventies. (Although Rourke remains vague about his age, he must have been around forty when he climbed back into the ring.) Eventually he started shopping around for movie roles again, having concluded a physical testing that one hopes did more good for his soul than it did for his face. He was very funny as a self-pampering, sleazeball lawyer in Francis Ford Coppola&amp;#39;s adaptation of the John Grisham thriller &lt;i&gt;The Rainmaker.&lt;/i&gt; He worked a long time filming a good-sized role in Terrence Malick&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;The Thin Red Line&lt;/i&gt;, but sadly, his whole performance was edited out of the movie. He played the villain in the Tsui Hark film &lt;i&gt;Double Team&lt;/i&gt;, which co-starred Jean Claude Van Damme and Dennis Rodman, but sadly, his performance stayed in the movie.

Rourke&amp;#39;s real salvation came from fellow actors who, when they took their own turns directing movies, reached out to him as a worthy brother in need. In small roles as a bookie in Vincent Gallo&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;Buffalo 66&lt;/i&gt;, as a prison drag queen in Steve Buscemi&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;Animal Factory&lt;/i&gt;, and as a man who can&amp;#39;t get past his daughter&amp;#39;s murder in Sean Penn&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;The Pledge&lt;/i&gt;, Rourke was given the chance to demonstrate both his range and, especially in the Penn film, his daring willingness to go very deep emotionally while remaining handsomely in control of his effects as an actor. In 1994, Rourke had been too occupied with boxing to say yes when Quentin Tarantino invited him to play the Bruce Willis part in &lt;i&gt;Pulp Fiction&lt;/i&gt;. Now, Tarntino&amp;#39;s sidekick Robert Rodriguez cast him in a small role in &lt;i&gt;Once Upon a Time in Mexico&lt;/i&gt; and then in a biggerm, showier (and CGI-augmented) one in &lt;i&gt;Sin City,&lt;/i&gt; a movie whose most awesome special effect was Rourke&amp;#39;s ability to make his presence felt through all that latex and computer trickery. But in the eyes of the suits, he was still unbankable and probably insurable.

But Aronofsky and his screenwriter, Robert D. Siegel, had planned &lt;i&gt;The Wrestler&lt;/i&gt; with Rourke in mind, and when Rourke agreed to meet the director, Aronofsky gave him what sounds like one hell of a pep talk. As Rourke describes it, &amp;quot;He sits down, and for the first five minutes, he tells me how I fucked up my whole career for 15 years behaving like this, and I&amp;#39;m agreeing with everything. Yes, I did. That&amp;#39;s why I haven&amp;#39;t worked for 15 years, and I&amp;#39;ve been working real hard not to make those mistakes...
He goes: &amp;#39;You have to listen to everything I say. You have to do everything I tell you. You can never disrespect me. And you can&amp;#39;t be hanging out at the clubs all night long. And I can&amp;#39;t pay you.&amp;#39; And I&amp;#39;m thinking: &amp;#39;This fucker must be talented, because he&amp;#39;s got a lot of nerve to say that.&amp;#39; &amp;quot; But Aronofsky discovered that he couldn&amp;#39;t get the movie funded without a big star, and when Rourke was told that he was going to be out of the picture, part of him was relieved, &amp;quot;&amp;quot;because I knew that Darren wanted me to revisit these dark places, these painful places.&amp;quot; Then suddenly, he was back in again. If Rourke had any complaints about the resulting collaboration, he&amp;#39;s keeping them to himself. &amp;quot;He knew how to push my buttons,&amp;quot; he says of Aronofsky. &amp;quot;I do a take, and I nail it. I look over at Darren and I think: &amp;#39;OK, we&amp;#39;re moving on.&amp;#39; And he walks over to me and says: &amp;#39;Do it better.&amp;#39; And you know what surprised me? I did it again, and I did it better. He knew that if he challenged me, that&amp;#39;s what I wanted. Here’s a project I can identify with this morning: Heather Graham will star in &lt;i&gt;The Hangover&lt;/i&gt; for director Todd Phillips (&lt;i&gt;Road Trip, Old School&lt;/i&gt;).  “The story revolves around three buddies, played by Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis, who lose their best friend (Justin Bartha) at his Caesars Palace bachelor party just 40 hours before his wedding,” says &lt;a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/film/news/e3i6981db61c01d2a4d6f7c49e24cb96712" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;i&gt;The Hollywood Reporter&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/a&gt;. “The trio must attempt to retrace all their bad decisions from the night before and figure out where things went wrong.”  Based on my experience, I’m guessing things went wrong at the Circus Circus buffet.

“Bruce Willis will make his directorial debut with the indie psychological drama &lt;i&gt;Three Stories About Joan&lt;/i&gt;,” &lt;a href="http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117992730.html?categoryid=13" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;i&gt;Variety&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/a&gt; reports.  Camilla Belle will play the title role in the film that “centers on a young woman at three points in her life and the family tragedies that cause her to lose her grip on reality. Willis will play the father of Belle’s character.”

Are you ready for &lt;i&gt;American Psycho: The Musical&lt;/i&gt;?  “Producers are betting Bret Easton Ellis&amp;#39; novel and screen adaptation will translate to a stage musical, with original 1980s-inspired songs and familiar covers of hits from the era,” &lt;a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/film/news/e3ic8b26fc03438b0b7a79f08a8a1b895cd" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;i&gt;THR&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/a&gt; reports.   That hangover isn’t getting any better.

A former protégé of Steven Spielberg, Zemeckis began his career making broad comedies before a move to big-budget fare demonstrated his flair for cutting-edge special effects. Yet in his best work, Zemeckis is able to seamlessly integrate the demands of ambitious effects with involving storylines that have surprising emotional pull. For example, in his 1985 film &lt;i&gt;Back to the Future&lt;/i&gt;, Zemeckis took a science fiction comedy about a teenager traveling back in time to his parents’ high school years and turned it into the story of the boy trying to make things right with his family.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Following the runaway box office success of &lt;i&gt;Back to the Future&lt;/i&gt;, Zemeckis rose to the ranks of Hollywood’s A-list directors, and with the release of his even more ambitious &lt;i&gt;Who Framed Roger Rabbit&lt;/i&gt;, he became Hollywood’s go-to director for effects-heavy blockbusters infused with plenty of humor and heart. At this point in his career Zemeckis could more or less write his own ticket, so after expanding on the &lt;i&gt;Back to the Future&lt;/i&gt; saga with two sequels, he decided to film a script written by Martin Donovan, an up-and-coming filmmaker who had recently released a cultish science fiction film entitled &lt;i&gt;Apartment Zero&lt;/i&gt;. Donovan’s screenplay provided ample opportunities to indulge the darker side of his sense of humor, which had largely gone unused since 1980’s &lt;i&gt;Used Cars&lt;/i&gt;, as well as giving him a chance to experiment with the body-morphing effects for the first time. The project was entitled &lt;i&gt;Death Becomes Her.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Having read some of the &lt;i&gt;Death Becomes Her&lt;/i&gt; screenplay, it’s easy for me to see how Zemeckis might have been attracted to it. Like &lt;i&gt;Back to the Future&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;Roger Rabbit&lt;/i&gt;, and even &lt;i&gt;Back to the Future Part III&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;Death Becomes Her&lt;/i&gt; combines two seemingly incompatible elements- in this case, a Grand Guignol-style story of two lifelong rivals and a darkly comic morality tale about the allure of youth and beauty. But while the screenplay had potential, much of that potential was lost on the way to the screen, and the finished product really doesn’t work very well. The movie’s not very funny and pretty shrill, but there are a number of other issues as well.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;One big problem is the casting. In conceiving the ageless divas at the center of the story, Donovan no doubt took a cue from the legendary rivalry between Bette Davis &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/robert_zemeckis.jpg"&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/streep.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/streep.jpg" align="right" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;and Joan Crawford. Unfortunately, actresses who can fill those shoes are few and far between, not just talent-wise, but also because their reputations as world-class pills preceded them. By contrast, Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn are merely actresses playing a role. Streep, quintessential actress that she is, comes closer to pulling it off, but whereas audiences never had a problem believing Davis or Crawford as divas (probably because they were), with Streep it merely feels like a performance. For her part, Hawn is never quite convincing as a worthy opponent for Streep- even in her more sinister moments, she comes off as too much of a lightweight. And Bruce Willis, as the ineffectual surgeon-turned-mortician who comes between then, is given next to nothing to do, and never fills in the blank spot where his character should be.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As for the Oscar-winning visual effects, they’re still pretty impressive, but they don’t have the same kind of magic as, say, the groundbreaking effects in &lt;i&gt;Roger Rabbit&lt;/i&gt;. Whereas Zemeckis managed to use the effects of &lt;i&gt;Roger Rabbit&lt;/i&gt; to create a convincing world which humans and cartoons convincingly inhabited together, he never successfully integrates his effects into the story here. The giveaway is the lack of camera movement in the big effects scenes. Usually, Zemeckis likes to keep his camera in motion, but whenever the special effects kick in, &lt;i&gt;Death Becomes Her&lt;/i&gt; literally stops dead in its tracks. The result is a movie in which story takes a backseat to the demands of CGI, a trap that Zemeckis’ previous work managed to successfully avoid.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But in the end &lt;i&gt;Death Becomes Her&lt;/i&gt;’s biggest problem may simply be its lack of nerve. Rather than embracing the twisted possibilities of its storyline, the movie wimps &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/robert_zemeckis.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/robert_zemeckis.jpg" align="right" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;out in the final reel by becoming a morality tale about the necessity of living life to the fullest. I’m guessing some of this was the result of studio mandates (a PG-13 rating, the rewrites from Universal’s in-house scribe David Koepp) in order to preserve their no doubt sizable investment in the film. However, Zemeckis has always been more at home with Americana than in the realm of the macabre. It’s tantalizing to imagine what Terry Gilliam or a young Peter Jackson might have done with the material. However, judging by the peals of laughter which accompanied the Friday night screening I attended- combined with mostly dumbfounded reaction to his previous films &lt;i&gt;Lady in the Water&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;The Village&lt;/i&gt;- I think it’s safe to say that M. Night Shyamalan’s reputation among the public has gone down the tubes. It’s strange to think that it hasn’t even been a decade since Shyamalan was Hollywood’s resident whiz kid, turning a low-key chiller into one of the biggest sleeper hits of the 1990s. Today I’ll be taking a second look at that film, 1999’s &lt;i&gt;The Sixth Sense&lt;/i&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;What made &lt;i&gt;The Sixth Sense&lt;/i&gt; a hit?:&lt;/b&gt; In this age of focus groups and micro-managed marketing campaigns, surprise blockbusters have become exceedingly rare. In fact, it seems like the only box-office surprises left are the flops. But &lt;i&gt;The Sixth Sense&lt;/i&gt; pulled it off through a mix of numerous elements. First, there was the film’s late-summer release, arriving just in time when slam-bang effects and big-budget bloat was beginning to wear down audiences. Then there were the trailers and TV spots, which wisely played up the story’s big hook, which was nearly encapsulated in one unforgettable four-word line (that would be “I see dead people,” not “keep moving, cheese dick”). And of course there was that final twist, which at a time before every genre film felt obligated to include a twist came as a legitimate surprise to most viewers.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But while all of these elements might have combined to make &lt;i&gt;The Sixth Sense&lt;/i&gt; a hit, it would take more than that to take the film’s grosses to nearly $300 million in the U.S. alone, second only to &lt;i&gt;Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace&lt;/i&gt; among 1999 releases. Credit good old-fashioned word-of-mouth for the film’s ultimate success. &lt;i&gt;The Sixth Sense&lt;/i&gt; was, quite simply, a movie that got people talking, with those who raved about the film convincing their friends, family and coworkers to check it out for themselves. Word of mouth is the hardest kind of buzz to harness properly, but if you can make it work for you, there are few better ways to tap into the zeitgeist, and &lt;i&gt;The Sixth Sense&lt;/i&gt; is proof of that.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;What happened?:&lt;/b&gt; If surprise blockbusters are few and far between, rarer still are huge hits that don’t experience some kind of backlash, and no sooner did &lt;i&gt;The Sixth Sense&lt;/i&gt; become one of the most popular movies ever than the backlash began in earnest. The primary target for the naysayers was the famous twist, with people calling the film a one-trick pony and even claiming (truthfully or not) that they saw it coming.&lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/6thsenseosmentwillis.jpg"&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/shyamalan282.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/shyamalan282.jpg" align="right" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But even more damaging to the film’s reputation in the long run was Shyamalan himself. &lt;i&gt;The Sixth Sense&lt;/i&gt; turned the young filmmaker from Philadelphia into one of Hollywood’s marquee directors. The trouble began when Shyamalan began to buy into the hype that had arisen around him. His presence became increasingly ubiquitous in the marketing of his films, with Shyamalan claiming proprietary credit for all of his subsequent efforts to date. Likewise, his attempts to recapture the box office magic of &lt;i&gt;The Sixth Sense&lt;/i&gt; have resulted in ever more misguided marketing ploys- remember the awful television “documentary” just before the release of &lt;i&gt;The Village&lt;/i&gt;?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Most of all, Shyamalan’s films seem to have suffered due to an need on the director’s part to re-create the success of &lt;i&gt;The Sixth Sense&lt;/i&gt; by sticking as closely to his original template as possible. Looking at his subsequent efforts, one notices Shyamalan’s trademark combination of funereal pacing, domestic drama, and the use of an often profoundly quiet soundtrack to build tension. While these stylistic tropes suited &lt;i&gt;The Sixth Sense&lt;/i&gt; perfectly, they haven’t fit his other stories nearly so well. However, with Shyamalan’s increased clout has become a maverick tendency on his part to be unreceptive to constructive criticism from others (Exhibit A being Bob Balaban weaselly film critic character in &lt;i&gt;Lady in the Water&lt;/i&gt;). As a result, Shyamalan’s recent films have become increasingly schizoid in tone, with goofball humor clashing with tense moments in a way that deflates any suspense the film is trying to create. The films are sometimes interesting- &lt;i&gt;Lady&lt;/i&gt; in particular has a crazy charm to it- but it doesn’t make them good.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Does &lt;i&gt;The Sixth Sense&lt;/i&gt; still work?:&lt;/b&gt; Sure does. Not having seen the film since its initial release, I wasn’t sure whether my knowledge of the twist would spoil the film for me, but I was relieved that it didn’t. In fact, knowing how the film plays out makes one more mindful of the clues Shyamalan sprinkles throughout the film, and watching the film again, I was impressed by how little Shyamalan cheats in order to make the twist happen. He reveals just enough to let the audience know that something is afoot, but never fudges the rules he’s set forth in the story, and if you look closely enough- or know what’s going to happen- you can see this.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Of course, none of this would have worked in the first place had Shyamalan made the audience feel like they were watching a “twist movie.” But to his credit, the film’s&lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/6thsenseosmentwillis.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/6thsenseosmentwillis.jpg" align="right" border="0" alt="" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt; drama is compelling enough on its own that first-time viewers aren’t simply waiting for the other shoe to drop, narratively-speaking. Bruce Willis gives one of his best performances in &lt;i&gt;The Sixth Sense&lt;/i&gt; as child psychologist Dr. Malcolm Crowe, who can’t understand why his career and marriage have gone completely to hell after his shooting by a former patient. Likewise, his scenes with Haley Joel Osment as Cole, the forlorn, pint-sized medium in his care, are nicely-performed and written, with Willis proving remarkably patient with his gifted young costar, and Shyamalan giving both some real opportunities to interact onscreen rather than piecing Osment’s performance together in the editing room as one sometimes has to do with child stars.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But the real heart of the film comes in the scenes between Cole and his working-class mother Lynn, played by Toni Collette. Shyamalan is often dismissed as being beholden to his twists, but in &lt;i&gt;The Sixth Sense&lt;/i&gt; he creates original characters with very specific relationships, and this- not plot manipulation- is what drives the film. The relationship between Cole and Lynn is always completely convincing, not only because of the performances by Collette and Osment, but also because of the details Shyamalan injects into their scenes together. By the end of the movie, I legitimately cared about these people, and Shyamalan rewards this by saving their best scene for last, when Cole finally decides to confess his secret to his mother. Many of Shymalan’s later films have also attempted one last final tug at the heartstrings, but generally without the same emotional investment, which makes these scenes feel gratuitous at best, and laughable at worst. But he does have leadership skills, and when Joe’s brilliant plan to water crops with, y’know, &lt;em&gt;water&lt;/em&gt; instead of corporate sports beverages helps to end a crippling food shortage, Camacho has the wisdom to actually&amp;nbsp;&lt;em&gt;listen&lt;/em&gt; to expert opinion rather than (&lt;em&gt;ahem&lt;/em&gt;) stubbornly staying the course. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Tommy “Tiny” Lister as President Lindberg in &lt;em&gt;The Fifth Element&lt;/em&gt; (1997) &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

Johansson&amp;#39;s debut album, Matthew Oshinsky has assembled &lt;a href="http://nysun.com/arts/spreading-scarlett-fever"&gt;a handy wrap-ups of actors, or at least professional camera subjects, turned vocalists.&lt;/a&gt; It comes divided into categories: &amp;quot;the teenyboppers&amp;quot; (Annette Funicello, David Cassidy, Hillary Duff); &amp;quot;former child stars&amp;quot; (a category that, perhaps surprisingly, seems to be the likeliest to yield an actual recording career, along the lines of those enjoyed by Janet Jackson, Phil Collins, and Alanis Morissette); and my personal favorite, &amp;quot;former soap stars&amp;quot; (including Rick Springfield, who Oshinsky notes &amp;quot;was already a popular singer in his native Australia when he suddenly found himself on millions of afternoon TV screens in 1981 [on &lt;i&gt;General Hospital&lt;/i&gt;] and learned that he didn’t know what popularity meant&amp;quot;). For those fully fledged adult mainstream celebrities who decide that this is their big chance to show that they&amp;#39;ve still got what they had at the high school talent show, Oshinsky favors the label &amp;quot;Meatheads.&amp;quot; Here we find your Russell Crowes, your Eddie Murphys, your Steven Seagals (no shit, really!?), and Bruce Willis, whose 1987 Motown release &lt;i&gt;The Return of Bruno&lt;/i&gt; (with backup work by Booker T. Jones and members of the Temptations) tried to hedge its bets by presenting itself as a &amp;quot;soundtrack&amp;quot; to an HBO special in which Willis pretended that he was pretending to be a legendary white soul singer on the comeback trail. He thus hedged his bets in a way that, in this specialized field, passed for clever, inviting people who noticed that his music sucked to treat the whole thing as a joke. His hideous, malformed cover of the Staples Singers&amp;#39; &amp;quot;Respect Yourself&amp;quot; made it to number five on the charts anyway. If I live to be a thousand, I will never understand how anyone could miss the 1980s.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Oshinsky names Jennifer Lopez and David Hasselhoff the queen and king of this niche of pop cross-pollination, noting that Hasselhoff&amp;#39;s second album, the 1989 &lt;i&gt;Looking for Freedom,”&lt;/i&gt; &amp;quot;shot to No.1 in Deutschland on the strength of the title track, which was embraced by thousands of Germans looking for something American and easy to understand.&amp;quot; (This may be closest that anyone has ever come to describing David Hasselhoff&amp;#39;s career as being easy to understand.) But he also knows that anything touched by William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy just has a special magic to it. &amp;quot;It is unknown if Mr. Shatner intended for his 1968 recording of poetry and pop covers, &lt;i&gt;The Transformed Man,&lt;/i&gt; to be the galaxy’s funniest album, even 40 years later, but it’s a serious contender. Mr. Nimoy’s 1969 record, &lt;i&gt;The Touch of Leonard Nimoy,&lt;/i&gt; was his fourth and last until 1995’s wistfully titled &lt;i&gt;You Are Not Alone,&lt;/i&gt; which presumably referred to someone other than him being with us.&amp;quot; I have no idea just what to make of the fact that the author seems to have gone out of his way to snub every crossover pin-up who earned my sister&amp;#39;s devotion when we were living under the same roof: namely, David Cassidy&amp;#39;s brother Shaun; John Schneider, of &lt;i&gt;The Dukes of Hazzard&lt;/i&gt;; and David Soul, who before attaining stardom on &lt;i&gt;Starsky and Hutch&lt;/i&gt; used to appear on talk shows singing in a ski mask so that his devastating good looks wouldn&amp;#39;t distract viewers from admiring the beauty of his music, and whose big hit, the tender ballad &amp;quot;Don&amp;#39;t Give Up on Us Baby&amp;quot;, would be rediscovered by disk jockeys with sick senses of humor every time he was arrested again for beating up a woman. Unless I hallucinated all that, but I don&amp;#39;t think I did. Nowadays, of course, thanks to YouTube and the invaluable resource &lt;a href="http://www.japander.com/" target="_blank"&gt;Japander&lt;/a&gt;, we’re always watching!  Let’s assume these five stars haven’t been humiliated enough and put them through the wringer one more time.

It’s not always easy to tell what these Japanese commercials are advertising, and here is a case in point.  At first I thought Cage was selling gum, then possibly a car.  While this may be the actor’s best performance in years, those of us unfamiliar with pachinko gaming devices may be a little unclear on the message.

Note Fox’s reprisal of the distressed yelp noise that made him famous in the &lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;Back to the Future&lt;/span&gt; movies.  That’s branding, folks.

No sort of world for me, I know that much. As hard as it is for me to believe that anyone on the planet still cares about the sex lives of Sarah Jessica Parker and her pals, I&amp;#39;m sure there are a few fans left out there. But will people get the message? The movie looks to go for cheap retro thrills and ultra-broad laughs, and America&amp;#39;s love affair with Steve Carrell may have peaked. But while &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2008/04/23/cannes-announces-2008-slate-film-nerds-breathe-sigh-of-relief.aspx"&gt;there was plenty on that list to get excited about&lt;/a&gt;, it seems they weren&amp;#39;t finished, as today they announced three more selections in the official Competition lineup.
&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
True to form, one of the latecomers was a French entry, and it proved to be a pretty interesting choice:  &lt;i&gt;Entre les murs&lt;/i&gt;, the latest film by celebrated filmmaker Laurent Cantet, whose previous works included the 2000 film &lt;i&gt;Time Out&lt;/i&gt;.  Another American film was added today as well- &lt;i&gt;Two Lovers&lt;/i&gt;, the latest from &lt;i&gt;We Own the Night&lt;/i&gt;&amp;#39;s James Gray, a Cannes favorite.  &lt;i&gt;Two Lovers&lt;/i&gt;, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Gwyneth Paltrow, is said to be a romance, making it something of a change of pace for Gray, who has to date specialized in crime stories.

But the big news today was the announcement of this year&amp;#39;s opening-night film, Fernando Meirelles&amp;#39; &lt;i&gt;Blindness&lt;/i&gt;.  The film, which stars Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo, will screen in competition, with its pedigree the hope is that it improves on the dicey precedent set by recent Cannes openers such as &lt;i&gt;Fanfan la Tulipe&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;The Da Vinci Code&lt;/i&gt;.

Added out of competition was the opener of the festival&amp;#39;s Un Certain Regard sidebar, &lt;i&gt;Hunger&lt;/i&gt;, directed by Steve McQueen (no, not that one).  Finally, the closing film of the festival was officially announced as being Barry Levinson&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;What Just Happened?&lt;/i&gt;.  Sadly, this star-studded film (the cast includes Robert DeNiro, Bruce Willis, and Robin Wright Penn) is a Hollywood satire, not a big-screen adaptation of the long-forgotten sitcom &lt;i&gt;Wha&amp;#39;Happened?&lt;/i&gt;.  So all you Mike LaFontaine fans in the audience will be sorely disappointed.

But wait, there&amp;#39;s more!  Two more names were added to the Official Competition Jury (&lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2008/04/24/cannes-2008-meet-the-jury.aspx"&gt;also announced last week&lt;/a&gt;), which brings the jury up to nine members.  The additions were French actress Jeanne Balibar (who worked with fellow jury member Sergio Castellitto in &lt;i&gt;Va Savoir&lt;/i&gt;)...

We’ve all had a &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2008/04/18/the-88-longest-minutes-of-al-pacino-s-career.aspx" target="_blank"&gt;good time&lt;/a&gt; picking on Al Pacino for his shameless stroll through the critically reviled &lt;i&gt;88 Minutes&lt;/i&gt;, but the &lt;a href="http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/movies/la-et-goldstein22apr22,1,727022.story" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;i&gt;L.A. Times&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/a&gt; isn’t going to let his partner-in-crime Robert De Niro off the hook.  Both Godfathers stand accused of making mockeries of their careers in pursuit of fat paychecks.  (Disclaimer: I’m prepared to do the same.  Somebody make me an offer.)

“The two icons of &amp;#39;70s New Hollywood, heroes to a generation of young actors and filmmakers, have become parodies of themselves,” writes Patrick Goldstein, “making payday movies and turning in performances that are hollow echoes of the electrically charged work they did in such films as &lt;i&gt;Serpico&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;Dog Day Afternoon&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;Mean Streets&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;Taxi Driver&lt;/i&gt;.”  As Goldstein notes, this isn’t exactly news to &lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;capo di tutti capi&lt;/span&gt; Francis Ford Coppola, who blew the whistle on his former golden boys in a &lt;a href="http://men.style.com/gq/blogs/gqeditors/2007/10/icon-francis-fo.html" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;i&gt;GQ &lt;/i&gt;interview&lt;/a&gt; last year.

“I met Pacino and De Niro both when they were really on the come,” said Coppola. “They were really young and insecure. Now, Pacino is very rich, maybe because he never spends any money; he just puts it in his mattress. De Niro, kind of, was very inspired by Zoetrope and created an empire and is very wealthy and powerful….You know, even in those days, after &lt;i&gt;The Godfather&lt;/i&gt;, I mean, I wanted—I didn&amp;#39;t feel that those actors were ready to, ‘Let&amp;#39;s do something else really ambitious.’ ”  The director of &lt;i&gt;Jack&lt;/i&gt;, ladies and gentlemen.

As &lt;a href="http://www.nerve.com/CS/blogs/screengrab/archive/2008/01/16/de-niro-amp-pacino-together-again-for-the-first-time.aspx" target="_blank"&gt;we’ve mentioned&lt;/a&gt;, Pacino and De Niro are re-teaming later this year for the police thriller &lt;i&gt;Righteous Kill&lt;/i&gt;.  It will perhaps help you keep a lid on your expectations to know that the film is brought to you by the same producer and director as &lt;i&gt;88 Minutes&lt;/i&gt;, Avi Lerner and Jon Avnet.  Lerner is described as a “colorful Israeli producer who has made hundreds of B movies over the last 20 years, having recently stepped up in budget class -- thanks to an influx of money from German film investment funds -- from direct-to-video thrillers with Jean Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal and horror fare like &lt;i&gt;Shark Attack&lt;/i&gt; to star vehicles with Sly Stallone (&lt;i&gt;Rambo&lt;/i&gt;) and Bruce Willis (&lt;i&gt;16 Blocks&lt;/i&gt;).”  It’s as if the golden age of Cannon Films is upon us again.  Goldstein says it best: “With Avnet at the helm again, expectations for quality are low -- it has the get-out-your-checkbooks feel of the latest Eagles tour.”

If this were, say, 1968, there&amp;#39;d probably be think pieces appearing analyzing this development in terms of a political shift in the zeitgeist; the Iraq war and other setbacks to our great national ego trip have tarnished the steroid-addled heroes who emerged full-bore in the 1980s and made audiences quicker to look for heroes who seem more thoughtful and capable of self-doubt. But nobody talks like that anymore, and today&amp;#39;s self-appointed experts are more likely to speak the language of the pop psychologist. Angellotti, who seems personally affronted by some of the newer success stories (&amp;quot;Do these kids even shave?&amp;quot;), has this theory: &amp;quot;For decades, we wanted our heroes to be who we could never be, but this generation of filmgoers wants heroes they can relate to, who are similar to them. They see themselves in these somewhat awkward, geeky, hairless-faced guys. They can relate to them. Stars like Clint Eastwood and Bruce Willis were men; these are boys, and they&amp;#39;re appealing to younger audiences.&amp;quot; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Others, such as Peter Safran, a man so smart that he freely admits to having produced &lt;i&gt;Meet the Spartans&lt;/i&gt;, thinks it&amp;#39;s a supply-and-demand issue. &amp;quot;I don&amp;#39;t think it&amp;#39;s happening because it&amp;#39;s what the audience is demanding; it&amp;#39;s happening because the old-style action hero isn&amp;#39;t emerging. These are the people who are emerging now and clearly audiences respond to seeing themselves up on the screen. Shia LaBeouf&amp;#39;s audience grew up with him - they are very familiar with him and he&amp;#39;s a legitimate star today.&amp;quot; Some of these deep thinkers may be getting a bit ahead of themselves. Whatever he can or can&amp;#39;t bench-press, Shia LaBeouf is a talented guy with tremendous reserves of audience rapport; whatever his future holds, he&amp;#39;s much more plausible star material than a lot of the people who&amp;#39;ve been hyped as alleged up-and-comers since Andrew McCarthy and Judd Nelson were figuring out which end of the razor you held to your face. (Judd&amp;#39;s still working it out.) More to the point, some of the &amp;quot;men&amp;quot; that these guys (who, let&amp;#39;s face it, may have their own deep-seated personal reasons for preferring heroes with hairline issues and calorie-intake counselors) love so much had their own callow periods when they first appeared on film. There were a few years there, between the point where &lt;i&gt;Moonlighting&lt;/i&gt; started to turn brown and &lt;i&gt;Die Hard&lt;/i&gt;&amp;#39;s opening weekend, where it wasn&amp;#39;t clear that Bruce Willis would ever wipe the smirk off his face and evolve into something more durable than an overage frat rat, and Mel Gibson&amp;#39;s early success as the stone-faced pain merchant Mad Max was something he had to grow past on his way to becoming an assured, emotionally expressive leading man. (Then space worms ate his brain. But that&amp;#39;s another story.) &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the end, the overmuscled, inaccessible terminators of the last couple of decades may be the ones who look like an aberration in the history of Hollywood stardom. Pauline Kael once defined the recipe for success as a male movie star as having the strength &amp;quot;to be one&amp;#39;s own man&amp;quot; while still expressing &amp;quot;the sensitivity that is attractive to women.&amp;quot; Stallone conveyed some of that sensitivity in the movie that made him a star, &lt;i&gt;Rocky&lt;/i&gt;, then lost it when he pumped himself into a cartoon killing machine, a move that proved to have only short-term dividends at the box-office. And Schwarzenegger never became enough of an actor to express it even if he had access to it; if his political career continues to prosper, it&amp;#39;ll enhance the likelihood that he&amp;#39;ll ultimately be seen as an all-around celebrity success story whose movie career was just a stepping stone to bigger things. These guys were big, the biggest stars in the world at a time when testosterone overload was what the world seemed to want, but when the world moved on, they were painted in a corner, and left behind no progeny above the level of, say, Dolph Lundgren. (Dwayne &amp;quot;The Rock&amp;quot; Johnson, who Arnold more or less officially designated as his rightful heir in a cameo in &lt;i&gt;The Rundown&lt;/i&gt;, has shown himself more interested in developing as a character actor than in making a quick payday from walking away from explosions in slow motion.) (I&amp;#39;m gonna include the walk-outs here, despite the wrath of one reader who believes that saying anything at all about a movie you didn&amp;#39;t see from start to finish constitutes dereliction of duty. Obviously, you should take such judgments with a grain or two of salt — and maybe an entire shakerful in the case of &lt;em&gt;Ballast&lt;/em&gt;, which I&amp;#39;ll very likely see again, and in full, at some point. But at the same time, you can get a mighty strong sense of a film in thirty-five to forty minutes.) &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;em&gt;Traces of the Trade: A Story From the Deep North&lt;/em&gt; (Documentary Competition):&lt;/strong&gt; Painfully earnest young woman with unbearably whiny voice — she narrates, alas — discovers that her esteemed ancestors were slave traders, corrals nine relatives for self-indulgent journey to sore spots from the family&amp;#39;s past. For hardcore aficionados of liberal white guilt only. (W/O) &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;em&gt;Time Crimes&lt;/em&gt; (Park City at Midnight):&lt;/strong&gt; I&amp;#39;m a sucker for time-travel stories, but even I had trouble warming to this Spanish gloss on 2004 Sundance prizewinner &lt;em&gt;Primer&lt;/em&gt;, in which a middle-aged schlub travels ninety minutes into the past and finds himself engaged in unwitting battle with other versions of himself who&amp;#39;ve developed wildly divergent agendas. Ineptly directed, for the most part, and the concluding twist is singularly unsatisfying. Come back, Shane (Carruth). &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;em&gt;The Wave&lt;/em&gt; (World Cinema Dramatic Competition):&lt;/strong&gt; German filmmaker Dennis Gansel turns the true story of a high-school history experiment gone awry into a glossy, pulse-pounding thriller, employing methods almost as fascistic as those of &lt;em&gt;The Wave&lt;/em&gt; itself. Intentional irony? One can&amp;#39;t help but be riveted by the spectacle of ordinary teenagers willingly submitting to autocratic rule — their überhip teacher is attempting to demonstrate that the Nazis weren&amp;#39;t anomalous monsters — but earmarking one kid as emotionally unstable from the get-go means that we&amp;#39;re just twiddling our thumbs as we await the inevitable moment when he finally snaps. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;em&gt;What Just Happened?&lt;/em&gt; (Premieres):&lt;/strong&gt; Hollywood made yet another mildly lacerating self-portrait, that&amp;#39;s what. Loosely based on the memoirs of producer Art Linson (&lt;em&gt;Fight Club&lt;/em&gt;, &lt;em&gt;Into the Wild&lt;/em&gt;, several Mamet films), it boasts the most relaxed De Niro performance in ages and a smattering of truly hilarious jokes, most of them involving out-of-control entitlement. Too bad Bruce Willis, sporting a Grizzly Adams beard that he refuses to shave prior to the start of filming on a new picture, isn&amp;#39;t nearly as funny as Alec Baldwin must have been in real life. (Read Linson&amp;#39;s equally diverting book for the lowdown; it happened on 1997&amp;#39;s &lt;em&gt;The Edge&lt;/em&gt;.) &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;em&gt;The Mysteries of Pittsburgh&lt;/em&gt; (Dramatic Competition):&lt;/strong&gt; Michael Chabon&amp;#39;s complicated first novel has been reduced (by &lt;em&gt;Dodgeball&lt;/em&gt;&amp;#39;s Rawson Marshall Thurber) to a simple bisexual love triangle, with two major characters — Arthur and Cleveland — melded into one, and another, the improbably named Phlox, distorted almost beyond recognition. And yet the movie still almost kinda works, mostly because Peter Sarsgaard commits himself so fully to his ludicrous bad-boy manipulator that we, like the dazed young protagonist, are completely taken in. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;em&gt;Downloading Nancy&lt;/em&gt; (Dramatic Competition):&lt;/strong&gt; I&amp;#39;d had about enough of this repugnant exercise in nihilism at the point when Maria Bello, playing a masochistic housewife who&amp;#39;s hired a stranger she found on the Internet (Jason Patric) to torture and kill her, walks barefoot into a mouse trap, over and over and over, shrieking with laughter each time it snaps on her toes. By all accounts from those who stuck it out, it gets much, much worse thereafter. At least the &amp;quot;revelation&amp;quot; that she was sexually abused as a child isn&amp;#39;t saved for the final reel. &lt;p&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;I love &lt;i&gt;Die Hard&lt;/i&gt; as much as the next guy, but this is pretty hilarious.  Now that Stiller has become the star of such comfort-blanket fare as &lt;i&gt;Meet the Fockers&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;Night at the Museum&lt;/i&gt;, it’s hard to remember what a brilliant comic mind he used to be.  Not to much a wicked impressionist- despite looking and sounding almost nothing like Bruce Willis, he manages to perfectly mimic Willis’ most famous mannerisms- the steely-eyed squint, the pained grimace, the smartass cackle.  This spoof trailer originally aired on the short-lived &lt;i&gt;Ben Stiller Show&lt;/i&gt;, and Stiller smartly enlisted the services of Taylor Negron, the baddie in the Willis-starring &lt;i&gt;The Last Boy Scout&lt;/i&gt;, to serve &lt;i&gt;Die Hungry&lt;/i&gt;&amp;#39;s nefarious archvillain.
