Come on, Spike, even A-Rod wouldn&amp;#39;t be caught dead in that thing. &amp;quot;“I’m not taking a poll,” he told the &lt;em&gt;&lt;a class="" href="http://carpetbagger.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/01/17/the-bagger-at-sundance-hes-gotta-have-it/?hp" target="_blank"&gt;New York Times&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/em&gt;. “I’m just trying to stay warm.” Try harder. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The first major deal of the festival has been sealed. &amp;quot;Antoine Fuqua’s &lt;em&gt;Brooklyn’s Finest&lt;/em&gt; closed a deal on Saturday night at the Sundance Film Festival, with North American rights going to Senator Distribution, Inc,&amp;quot; &lt;a class="" href="http://www.indiewire.com/article/takes_brooklyns_finest/" target="_blank"&gt;Indiewire&lt;/a&gt; reports. &amp;quot;Buzz began building around the film after Friday night’s world premiere at the Eccles Theater in Park City. The story of &amp;#39;cops and crooks&amp;#39; (ala &lt;em&gt;Training Day&lt;/em&gt;), Finest stars Richard Gere, Don Cheadle, Ethan Hawke, Wesley Snipes and Ellen Barkin.&amp;quot; &lt;a class="" href="http://www.mcnblogs.com/sundance/" target="_blank"&gt;Movie City News&lt;/a&gt; expresses some surprise at the deal, &amp;quot; given the reportedly hostile reception it received at the film’s premiere, especially to an ending that shocked and angered many.&amp;quot; Not to worry, though! The first few days at the festival tend to be ones of disappointment, but the films this year seem to be challenging that assumption. At least so far. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Having seen over a dozen of the films even before I left New York, I was suspecting this might happen. The docs slate, as usual, is loaded with interesting work, but even a number of the narrative features screened in advance left most critics impressed. &lt;em&gt;In the Loop&lt;/em&gt; and &lt;em&gt;Bronson&lt;/em&gt;, in particular, are two films that emerged from their New York screenings with deafening buzz. More on those as the festival rolls along. (I actually haven’t seen them yet.) &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As for crowds, the rumors of a stripped-down festival in which everyone is reeling from a combination of financial ruin and a looming boycott of All Things Mormon don’t appear be carrying much weight either. Sure, a lot of old Sundance faces are missing, and this is the weekend, but the crowds seem robust. (The buses are certainly still packed. Fuck.) &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The first day of the festival brought a number of well-received premieres, with Lee Daniels&amp;#39;s coming-of-age melodrama &lt;em&gt;Push: Based on the Novel by Sapphire&lt;/em&gt;, Lynn Shelton&amp;#39;s bros-doing-gay-porn comedy &lt;em&gt;Humpday&lt;/em&gt;, and Antoine Fuqua&amp;#39;s cop epic &lt;em&gt;Brooklyn’s Finest&lt;/em&gt; all generating a significant degree of buzz. Press screenings for the African thriller &lt;em&gt;Johnny Mad Dog&lt;/em&gt; and the Sam Rockwell sci-fi drama &lt;em&gt;Moon&lt;/em&gt; also left a number of critics impressed. I&amp;#39;ll have more on these soon as well, but for now, the big acquisitions heat seems to be centered around &lt;em&gt;Push&lt;/em&gt; and &lt;em&gt;Humpday&lt;/em&gt;. The festival opens on January 15, 2009 with the claymation feature &lt;i&gt;Mary and Max&lt;/i&gt;, starring Philip Seymour Hoffman and Toni Collette and narrated by Barry Humphries. It’s “the tale of two unlikely pen pals: Mary, a lonely, eight-year-old girl living in the suburbs of Melbourne, and Max, a forty-four-year old, severely obese man living in New York.” &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Premieres that caught my eye include: &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;500 Days of Summer&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/b&gt;. “When an unlucky greeting card copywriter is dumped by his girlfriend, the hopeless romantic shifts back and forth through various periods of their 500 days &amp;#39;together&amp;#39; in hopes of figuring out where things went wrong.” OK, maybe that doesn’t sound so promising, but Zooey Deschanel is in it and that’s worth something in my book. (That’s my book &lt;i&gt;Zooey Deschanel, You Will Be Mine&lt;/i&gt;, coming to a bookstore near you once she lifts the restraining order.) &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;Brooklyn’s Finest&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/b&gt;. “After enduring vastly different career paths, three unconnected Brooklyn cops wind up at the same deadly location.” &lt;i&gt;Training Day&lt;/i&gt; director Antoine Fuqua gets back to the nitty-gritty. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;b&gt;Manure&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/i&gt;. The Polish brothers present a “comic tale centered on manure salesmen in the early 1960s.” Billy Bob Thornton stars. What, you’re not intrigued? &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And the Gun to My Head Award goes to &lt;i&gt;Spread&lt;/i&gt;, starring Ashton Kutcher as a handsome young man who survives in Los Angeles by seducing wealthy older women. Why, Sundance? Why? &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Documentaries of interest include James Toback’s &lt;i&gt;Tyson&lt;/i&gt; (about the boxer, not the frozen food) and &lt;i&gt;It Might Get Loud&lt;/i&gt;, “a history of the electric guitar from the point of view of three legendary rock musicians.” Who are they? Jackson, Hollywood&amp;#39;s default angry black man, in the role of a mean-tempered, menacing L.A. cop who takes offense to an interracial couple (played by Patrick Wilson and Kerry Washington) who move in next door to him.&amp;nbsp; The idea of crooked cops has always been an appealing one to people who write thrillers; the idea of the very people charged with protecting the innocent being the ones who might hurt them has powerful appeal, and plenty of filmmakers -- Alfred Hitchcock comes immediately to mind -- have put their ambivalent feelings about the police front and center in their movies.&amp;nbsp; By the same token, however, due to the strict content restrictions of post-Code Hollywood, it was a taboo subject for decades; with very few exceptions, a crooked or evil cop was one of the very few things it was absolutely verboten to show on screen.&amp;nbsp; When the code era passed, almost as if to make up for lost time, dozens of scriptwriters and directors began to explore the idea of the cop who betrayed the ideals he was sworn to uphold, and the bad cop genre was born.&amp;nbsp; Here&amp;#39;s five of the best. &lt;/font&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;THE ASPHALT JUNGLE &lt;/i&gt;(1950)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;John Huston&amp;#39;s masterful ensemble picture about a daring, carefully calculated jewel theft gone awry is one of the greatest &lt;i&gt;noir &lt;/i&gt;films ever made, with an incredible cast (headed by Sterling Hayden as the iron-willed thug Dix Handley and Sam Jaffe as the brilliant crook Doc Riedenschneider) and a taut, fatalistic atmosphere that keeps you glued to the screen.&amp;nbsp; But it&amp;#39;s also a fine example of how movies had to creep around the concept of the bad cop at the height of the Hays Code:&amp;nbsp; although it&amp;#39;s made clear that Barry Kelley&amp;#39;s Lt. Ditrich is on the make, and that his accepting bribes from hoods helps crime flourish, the idea of a crooked policeman being so plainly presented ran afoul of the Code.&amp;nbsp; So a scene was filmed in which his incorruptible chief set him on the straight an narrow, and the end coda assures the viewer that such crooked cops are an aberration that will always be found out and punished, rather than the norm. &lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;THE GODFATHER&lt;/i&gt; (1972)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;The Hays Code had been more or less dead in the water for a dozen years by the time Francis Ford Copolla started filming his epic American gangster movie, and those dozen years had seen a lot of wearing away of the notion of the policemen as a friendly, helpful, vigilant and unimpeachable protector of the innocent.&amp;nbsp; But a few taboos still remained on screen, and &lt;i&gt;The Godfather &lt;/i&gt;did its not insubstantial bit to overcome them.&amp;nbsp; In the course of the Corleone family&amp;#39;s conflict with the slimy drug dealer Virgil Solozzo, Tom Hagen warns that &amp;quot;The Turk&amp;quot; cannot be gotten to because he enjoys the protection of New York police captain McCluskey (played by Sterling Hayden, acting the flip side of his &lt;i&gt;Asphalt Jungle &lt;/i&gt;character) -- and that it is simply not done to kill a cop.&amp;nbsp; When young Michael Corleone, who had previously been the victim of McCluskey&amp;#39;s bullying, argues &amp;quot;Where does it say you can&amp;#39;t kill a cop?&amp;quot;, and points out that Hayden is a dirty cop on the make with his fingers in the drug racket, he&amp;#39;s not just talking to the family -- he&amp;#39;s talking to the audience.&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;MANIAC COP&lt;/i&gt; (1988)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;William Lustig&amp;#39;s bizarre little thriller, combining traditional police thriller elements with a sadistic slice of slasher-era horror, was the last movie you&amp;#39;d expect to start a franchise.&amp;nbsp; But so it did, and in the the process launched the career of the hulking, iron-jawed Robert Z&amp;#39;dar.&amp;nbsp; The sequels are generally not worth watching, but the original &lt;i&gt;Maniac Cop&lt;/i&gt; -- in which a serial killer dressed as an NYPD patrol officer starts preying on innocent victims -- it a remarkably tight and rather exciting (if extremely lurid) piece of cinema that more than justifies its cult reputation.&amp;nbsp; As a director, Lustig doesn&amp;#39;t waste time or film, and the movie carries on at a deadly, involving clip; size="2"&gt;Abel Ferrara&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;Bad Lieutenant &lt;/i&gt;was, at the time of its release, what it still is today:&amp;nbsp; an atom bomb of bad-cop movies.&amp;nbsp; Harvey Keitel, at the peak of his &amp;quot;I must appear naked in every movie I make&amp;quot; phase, plays a nameless New York police detective who is far and away the worst portrayal of a policeman in cinematic history:&amp;nbsp; a brutal, violent drunk, a drug addict, a crook, a thief, a gambling addict, and a whoremonger.&amp;nbsp; But this isn&amp;#39;t just shock cinema:&amp;nbsp; Keitel&amp;#39;s Lieutenant is not just the worst big-screen cop imaginable, he&amp;#39;s also, in many ways, the most complex.&amp;nbsp; Ferrara throws Keitel into a deep, dark hole because he wants to show him the way out of it.&amp;nbsp; &lt;i&gt;Bad Lieutenant &lt;/i&gt;is a terrific film, which is why the as-yet-unconfirmed rumors that Werner Herzog is going to remake it with Nicolas Cage in the title role are so bewildering.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;TRAINING DAY&lt;/i&gt; (2001)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;Antoine Fuqua&amp;#39;s nasty 2001 Los Angeles gang story hasn&amp;#39;t held up spectacularly well in the years since it was made.&amp;nbsp; Co-star Ethan Hawke seems out of place; the plot doesn&amp;#39;t hold up particularly strongly, the tone wanders all over the place, and though it&amp;#39;s quite well made, it&amp;#39;s never spectacular.&amp;nbsp; What does hold up, however, is Denzel Washington&amp;#39;s electrifying performance as Alonzo, a narcotics officer so deep on the take that he barely recognizes -- or cares -- what side he&amp;#39;s on.&amp;nbsp; In the annals of crooked cop movies, it stands alongside Harvey Keitel&amp;#39;s &lt;i&gt;Bad Lieutenant&lt;/i&gt;, and skillfully illustrates the way that a bad man can justify his evil by thinking that he&amp;#39;s doing good.&amp;nbsp; The role earned Washington his second acting Oscar and his first Best Actor; though he&amp;#39;d deserved it for &lt;i&gt;Malcolm X&lt;/i&gt;, this was no mere compensatory gesture, but a well-earned recognition of a stunning performance. &lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;Related href="http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/200804/iraq-movies"&gt;brought back the &amp;#39;70s&lt;/a&gt;, again. But when Tarantino and other filmmakers of a certain age set out to redeem the &amp;#39;70s as a cool decade after all, they fixated on the stylistic tics and mannerisms of gritty urban thrillers and genre hybrids such as blaxsploitation flicks, and what&amp;#39;s been brought back now, in direct response to the Bush administration and its cheerleaders in the media, is the paranoid hopelessness of such Vietnam-and-Watergate-era pictures as &lt;i&gt;The Parallax View, The Day of the Condor&lt;/i&gt;, and the vigilante genre epitomized by Charles Bronson in &lt;i&gt;Death Wish&lt;/i&gt;. This is not how it was supposed to be. In the wake of 9/11, there were a lot of predictions, both inside the industry and in the press, that audiences would now reject cynicism and violent thrills and embrace the second coming of John Wayne, a simple man with a simple plan to solve all our problems, starting with wiping that smirk off your face, and do me some push-ups, smart boy! (Remember that &amp;quot;irony is dead&amp;quot; horseshit?) But the few overt attempts to play to this &amp;quot;new reality&amp;quot; — say, that remake of &lt;i&gt;The Four Feathers&lt;/i&gt; that didn&amp;#39;t do anybody any good, or that documentary about &amp;quot;good Americans&amp;quot; that was marketed as a bitch slap to Michael Moore — died a dog&amp;#39;s death, and the more cunning of the filmmakers who might have once considered catering to it got with the program. As Douthat points out, after the failure of &lt;i&gt;Tears of the Sun&lt;/i&gt;, a 2003 movie about some American special-ops guys in Nigeria who remember what they&amp;#39;re &lt;i&gt;really&lt;/i&gt; fighting for and who proceed to, well, really fight for it, its director, Antoine Fuqua, was back last year with &lt;i&gt;Shooter&lt;/i&gt;, in which a special-ops guy who&amp;#39;s back from the Middle East discovers that &lt;i&gt;he&amp;#39;s&lt;/i&gt; really fighting a conspiracy made up of sleazeball U.S. government guys — plutocrats who disregard the laws, sneer at the common people, and the depth of whose villainy can be accurately gauged according to the degree of their physical resemblance to Dick Cheney. Audience who ate it up may not have been conscious of responding to having their political prejudices stroked, but it was a much bigger hit than &lt;i&gt;Tears of the Sun&lt;/i&gt; without being a much better movie. Also instructive: the career of Stephen Gaghan, who made a splash with his screenplay for Steven Soderbergh&amp;#39;s (pre-9/11) &lt;i&gt;Traffic&lt;/i&gt;, which summed up the war on drugs as a misguided, empty enterprise, but did also allow for the existence of a few good people working inside the system and scoring whatever little victories they could. Since then, Gaghan made his debut as a writer-director with &lt;i&gt;Syriana&lt;/i&gt;, commonly referred to as &amp;quot;&lt;i&gt;Traffic&lt;/i&gt; with oil instead of drugs,&amp;quot; but which has a much more paranoid vibe, and which ends with its most intelligent, good-hearted, and plugged-in characters — its best hopes for positive change — literally blown off the road. It&amp;#39;s the difference that makes &lt;i&gt;Syriana&lt;/i&gt; feel like a product of the current zeitgeist. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The James Bond of the current era is Jason Bourne, the killing machine who, having lost his identity, starts out knowing nothing except that the world is out to get him. Over the course of three very busy pictures, he&amp;#39;s yet to learn anything that might cheer him up. (The closest thing to good news in any of the Bourne pictures is that an amnesiac with a target on his back might still be able to hook up with Franka Potente — but he won&amp;#39;t be able to keep her for long.) Even the Napoleon Solo of the current era, &lt;i&gt;24&lt;/i&gt;&amp;#39;s Jack Bauer, though regarded by some as a right-wing hero standing almost alone in the liberal fantasyland that is topical-minded Hollywood, is at odds with the pasty-white, Nixonian government leaders who, more often than not, are at the bottom of the latest villainy he has to bust. (Jack&amp;#39;s real &amp;quot;ideology&amp;quot; amounts to a bland willingness to do anything to anybody to get his way, in a universe where torture works. Like many a self-identified law-and-order type, he&amp;#39;s not a real conservative so much as a barbarian with a cell phone and a muscle shirt.) But because the similarities between the &amp;#39;70s and today have more to do with a shared national mood of fatalistic helplessness than with the specifics giving rise to that mood, the &amp;quot;new &amp;#39;70s&amp;quot; atmosphere works best when the filmmakers skirt the issue of just what it is they&amp;#39;re mooning about. So last year&amp;#39;s slate of &amp;quot;Iraq war&amp;quot; movies had a beside-the-point feel to them, and even the vigilante-hero template doesn&amp;#39;t have the same impact when transferred to contemporary New York — a place that certainly has its problems but that, compared to the city Travis Bickle called home, is relatively bloodless and well-scrubbed. (As Douthat points out, &amp;quot;Jodie Foster’s gun-toting avenger [in &lt;i&gt;The Brave One&lt;/i&gt;] alone would have been responsible for more than one percent of the city’s annual killings.&amp;quot; The anxieties of the &amp;#39;70s movies were part of something not just huge but pervasive, a societal rot that you couldn&amp;#39;t miss — you couldn&amp;#39;t leave home or turn on the news without being reminded of it. However bad things seem now, they don&amp;#39;t seem out of control — if anything, just the opposite — and most people probably assign most of the blame squarely to one or two powerful people whose guts they hate.
