One of my biggest misgivings about last year’s The Foot Fist Way was that, although leading man Danny McBride was some kind of comic genius, he was surrounded by a bunch of amateurs, which caused the comedy to suffer. Thankfully, director Jody Hill appears to have recognized the need to use more than one funny person in a comedy, judging by the cast he’s assembled for his follow-up, Observe and Report. Like a certain hit from this January, Observe takes as its unlikely hero a schlubby mall security guard, but this is no Paul Blart, which made this online-only red-band trailer a good way to go in order to distinguish it from its more family-friendly cousin (here’s a link to the green-band trailer). Observe appears to follow the template of the contemporary R-rated comedy, but I enjoy a lot about this trailer, especially the sight of Seth Rogen playing something other than an intensely verbal, pop culture-savvy slacker. And after a string of self-important dramas like Crash, World Trade Center and Lions For Lambs, Michael Peña’s career could really use some comedy.
