The Junky's Christmas (1993), a twenty-minute claymation short directed by Nick Donkin and Melodie McDaniel, is based on a William S. Burroughs story from the 1989 collection Interzone that Burroughs read aloud on the Hal Willner-produced CD Spare Ass Annie and Other Tales. The filmmakers were able to persuade Will Bill to let them invade his cabin and film a live-action prologue in which he appears to be giving a grandfatherly recitation by the hearth, though even with wreaths and stockings in the background, the best that the author of Naked Lunch could do was conjure up an image of a grandfatherly Ed Gein. Originally the filmmakers had hoped to have Burroughs surrounded by a gaggle of adoring children, but Burroughs shot that idea down pretty quick. I first saw this at a 1994 film festival where the filmmakers were in attendance; trying to describe what it was like negotiating with Burroughs over what he wouldn't do, they were moved to describe their star as "ornery."
