Trailer Review: Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist

Posted by Paul Clark

Dear Michael Cera,

I’m afraid your shtick might be starting to wear a little thin. It hurts me a little to say this, since I was a big fan of your work on Arrested Development, where you were responsible for some of the series’ most priceless moments. In addition, I thought you were exactly the sort of leading man that Superbad needed, your fumbly-kid style a perfect counterpart to the surrounding outrageousness. But midway through Juno, I began to wonder if you had anything else in your acting arsenal, and having watched a few episodes of Clark and Michael online didn’t put these thoughts to rest. Now, I’m not saying that it wasn’t a wise career move to act in Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, which wasn’t just directed by the promising Peter Sollett (Raising Victor Vargas) but also gives you a chance to play an honest-to-goodness romantic lead instead of being pulled thus way and that by Juno. But I’m not sure that starring in a movie that combines the raucous odyssey of Superbad and the outsider humor of Juno will give people a clue as to your acting versatility in the long term. I hope I’m wrong, Michael- Lord knows, if there’s anyone I want to succeed in Hollywood, it’s someone who seems like a well-adjusted, if somewhat neurotic, guy. But I fear you’re going to have to learn to spread your wings if you want your career to really take off.

All the best,
Paul

Paul, when you're right, you're right. And you're right. I hate to say it because I loved Cera's shtick in Arrested Development, but I want to see him branch out and do something besides play the awkward guy.

It doesn't look like he does it here, but I'll be seeing it anyway.
