Video of the Day: "The Shining", Channel Four Style

Posted by Leonard Pierce

This month is Kubrick Month on the UK's Channel Four, and in honor of the late director (who did much of his best work in England), their advertising department has created a rather impressive way to introduce viewers to him:  by literally putting them in the director's chair.

Channel Four took great pains to recreate the backstage feel of The Shining:  aside from the near-perfect duplication of the Outlook Hotel, the network hired actors who highly resemble Kubrick's 1980 cast and crew, produced mock-ups of the props and equipment, and chose to do the promo as a continuous tracking shot in duplication of some of the movie's most memorable scenes.

A Channel 4 advert is BBC-style?

Channel 4 is an independent RIVAL to the BBC. The two organisations are entirely unrelated to one another. It'd be like saying 'CNN's Fox News', capiche?

Also I concur that this trailer kicks all sorts of ass. It is also very in keeping with Channel 4's patented in-house trailer/intro style, which is why it works so brilliantly:

Also, a lot of the details of how the crew look and behave was lifted very accurately from Vivian Kubrick's documentary The Making Of The Shining. This thing really is Nerd Heaven.
