Trailer Review: Doomsday

Posted by John Constantine

As I mentioned recently, the apocalypse as a motif is fantastic and I plan on asking it to be my valentine next month. I also mentioned that in film, the apocalypse is more often than not a launching pad for some truly heinous genre crap. Doomsday seems to fall squarely in the crap arena. Not only that but it looks like derivative crap. This wouldn’t be so sad if it wasn’t the work of Neil Marshall whose last picture, The Descent, was a personal favorite of mine back in ’06. Can’t win them all I suppose. All the same, it’s nice to see Malcolm McDowell on screen. Thought that guy was dead.

Scottish vesrion of Escape from New York? I'm willing to give Marshall the benefit of the doubt; Dog Soldiers was terrific too.

I really don't get the hate - it does look like crap, but of the highly enjoyable (and unpretentious) kind. Haven't seen one of those in ages. I'm willing to believe for now most of the hollywood shittiness is the trailer's fault rather than the movie's...

definitely agree with rciton on this one.  i've never understood how one can surmise that a film is inconclusive junk from its trailer.

also, was evangeline lily not available for the film?  weird.
