We didn't think it was really going to happen, but the Powers that Be at CraigsList have folded under pressure to remove "erotic services" from the site.

In place of "erotic services" will be a new category called “adult services," which the site's employees will vet for activity that violates CraigsList's terms of service. Each posting will cost $10, with a $5 reposting fee. While this may satiate some state's officials, who have been urging the site to close the section since the CraigsList Murder last month, New York's attorney general is calling the concession "half baked."

“Rather than work with this office to prevent further abuses, in the middle of the night, Craigslist took unilateral action which we suspect will prove to be half-baked," Mr. Cuomo said in a statement.

But according to Jim Buckingham, chief executive of Craigslist, legal pressure had nothing to do with the change.

“In striking this new balance we have sought to incorporate important feedback from all the groups that have expressed strongly held views on this subject, including some of the state A.G.s, free speech advocates and legal businesses who are accustomed to being entitled to advertise,” Mr. Buckmaster said.

Perhaps a few good things will come of this, including the fact that San Francisco-based CraigsList is going to have to hire new staff to peruse the ads. Hmm...

Polish Teens Work Hard for the Money

When we were 14 and decided that we just had to have every style of Doc Martens sandals and at least two pairs of boots to go with those Lucky jeans, we got our first job. We worked the counter at Chinese Delight in the food court of the Independence Center. It was fun, we made new friends, and every week we blew our entire paycheck at The Buckle. We worked hard for the money, but apparently not as hard as Polish teens who are turning to prostitution so they can buy clothes, concert tickets and expensive vacations.

A new report from the Poland Children's Ombudsman's Office shows that girls enter the sex business at fifteen or sixteen, while boys enter as young as fourteen or fifteen.

Twenty percent do it on their own free will. They choose to sell their bodies in order to earn money for brand clothes, fashionable gadgets or concert tickets. Material goods help them gain respect of their peers. “Young people feel they need to attend trendy clubs, wear brand clothes and have enough money for expensive alcohol and cigarettes in order to be accepted,” said Jacek Kurzępa, the co-author of the report.

Another reason why teenagers decide to enter sex business is the desire to earn money easily and quickly. It is a particularly tempting option for those who collect money for holidays, pets or tickets to all kinds of music and sports events, because it saves time. There is also a group of teenagers who prostitute themselves just for a thrill, to taste a forbidden fruit, says the report.

Prostitution is not perceived as bad or even shameful by many teenagers, the report shows. Young people, instead of calling prostitution by its name, use the term “sponsoring”, which softens its true meaning. For some, teenagers those who have a sponsor can even be role models.

It is becoming easier for teenagers to enter the sex trade nowadays than it was several years ago. Young people do not need to sell their bodies on the street. All they need is a computer with internet access, where they can find sex ads and place their own offers. Some of the teenagers are encouraged to prostitute themselves by their friends who already are in the business. “Twenty- or thirty-years-olds become prostitutes because they have to pay for studies or need money for their children. Teenagers sell their bodies in order to have fun,” said a sex agency owner.

Young people who choose prostitution as their source of income, a bonus to their pocket money, do not realize the real cost of it. In Poland there are not enough institutions or organizations which could help teenagers permanently free themselves from sex work, when they decide to, says the report. Even police are rather helpless when it comes to investigating consensual teenage sex cases since neither a client, nor a teen prostitute want their business to be revealed.

Sasha Grey's mainstream breakout role in The Girlfriend Experience, playing later this month at the Tribeca Film Festival before a wider release in May, is exciting the elitist media on the east coast. They're all big fans of Grey, which means they've been waiting for years to get her (half?) naked for their magazines while interviewing her on their office couch. In this week's New York Magazine, Grey talked about playing a Ashley Alexandra Dupre-era prostitute in her first "legitimate" feature film...

How were you cast?
One of Soderbergh’s writers, Brian Koppelman, contacted me through MySpace. I thought it was a joke, because I get a lot of fake offers on MySpace. Then Steven left me a voice mail.

What, as they say, was your motivation?
Steven was really secretive about the character, but he wanted me to bring a natural, uninhibited quality to the film. There’s a lot of scenes where I’m improvising. I sat at home, writing a lot, figuring out who she was. I’d take my notes to Steven.

You don’t actually have sex onscreen.
When I had the first meeting I assumed I would be naked and do a sex scene. Did I think I would do five, like in my adult work? No, but even up to the point where we were shooting, I thought there was going to be at least one sex scene.

That’s usually the first thing actresses clear up in their contracts.
The contract did say that I would be nude. But one of the clauses was [laughing] “You cannot have [real] sex.” To me, that was a pretty funny legality.

I imagine you’d never seen that before?
It was pretty weird. But it was great not to have sex—that would have been too easy. If you want to see me having sex, you can do that! Not doing it shifts the focus, because a lot of clients are there for more than the sex.

What’s your plan?
I’ve got to diversify myself. Do I want to be 35, having sex on-camera? No. I want to be sitting on a fucking porch at my beach house with my own successful company.

It gets better: 46-year-old attorney Marc Beaumont got client (yes, this is her real name) Anal Sheikh drunk on multiple occasions and slept with her, then later billed her for his time in that absurd amount. Either this is the best sex since Eliot Spitzer was Governor of New York or-- no, it apparently wasn't. Sheikh was furious and went to the press... which probably won't sit too well with... Mrs. Beaumont.

According to the Telegraph:

...things turned sour after Mr Beaumont's wife, Michele, 50, allegedly found out about their relationship and locked him out of the house and he was concerned she would "trash his office".
She claimed Mrs Beaumont later phoned her, threatening to "destroy" her.
Yet despite apparently agreeing with his wife not to see her face to face, she alleged Mr Beaumont wanted to continue the affair. She alleges that the couple met and kissed and he even asked and colleague to lie about his whereabouts if his wife should telephone his office.

Miss Shiekh claims Mr Beaumont acted negligently and gave her bad legal advice on a string of occasions.

Among that terrible advice, we're guessing: "have sex with me."

The Italian movie Gomorrah, which is so controversial, everyone involved fears for their lives, including the author of the original novel, who has had to accept 24-hour police protection. Why? Because it involves the newer, much more sinister Mafia.

E! calls the movie a "bloody, dull business," and we have to agree. It's three hours of ruthless, pointless, loosely-connected scenes of graphic violence and no narrative thread to keep the audience engaged. Nonetheless, at least it has raised awareness of the Camorra (get the title's pun now?) and the modern European Mafia, which is threatening to become more powerful than Mexico's drug cartels...

Luckily, the police are making their move. Yesterday, they rounded up a bunch of Italian gangsters and other degenerates, including one woman who goes by the name "Kitty." It turns out that Kitty is actually Ugo Gabriele or-- snicker, snicker-- Gabriele Ugo, as some papers have reported "her." Gabby is actually a "big, burly dude," according to the police, and the world's first known transsexual Mafioso. (The closest was Vincent "the Chin" Gigante, who walked around in his bathrobe and pretended to be insane, but even he wasn't nutty enough to pretend to be a cross-dresser-- that would've gotten him whacked for sure.)

Gabby allegedly works for the Camorra out by the airport, running what else but a prostitution ring. How cliche of you, sir.

Let's blame the economy for this, too: Teachers wishing to commit a crime have caught on to not give it away for free to students, when they can turn a trick and turn a quick buck. Only in the unfortunate case of Ohio teacher Amber Carter, it led to a felony charge.

Amber was arrested for prostitution yesterday at a Super 8 motel when she met up with a john she'd found on Craigslist during school hours. She had called out sick yesterday afternoon for her trick, which turned out to be a sting. It didn't help her case that she used school computers to arrange her business--it led to the additonal felony charge of "unauthorized use of property."

"It's not our place to tell them too much," said Superintendant Larry Anderson about what to tell the students, "but we figured the students might have heard rumors and would have some questions." Parents will get a letter about the situation tonight.

He also described Amber as a popular teacher. I'll say!

New York madam Kristin Davis—who once counted former New York governor Eliot Spitzer among her clients—is going down. But her clients aren't gong down with her. At least not yet.

After her arrest, Davis pleaded guilty to "promoting prostitution" and forfeited nearly $500,000 in profits. And even after she offered her client list to the district attorney's office, Davis said they "showed no interest" in pursuing the men who would charge prostitution services to corporate credit cards. Many ordered her to send invoices for computer consulting and construction expenses—fraud on their part, according to former New York prosecutor Sid Baumgarten.

Davis did however, give her list to ABC News, who gladly accepted it.

From her list, ABC determined that clients included:

-a vice president of NBC Universal
-a part owner of an MLB team
-a major New York real estate developer who would "come to the door wearing women's panties"
-bankers and directors from JP Morgan Securities, Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lynch, Lehman Brothers and Deutsche Bank

A defense attorney who has represented madams before says that in New York, while Davis "was prosecuted for a felony, the clients would be guilty of misdemeanors."

Davis is aware she's getting the short end of the shaft here:

"I, as the proprietor of a business get arrested and lose everything, when no one that was frequenting my business, spending $200,000, $300,000 a year, has been punished in any way or even looked into."

She has not yet decided whether she'll release her client list to the public, but considering she's written a book and has leaked it to ABC news, we plan on seeing it pretty soon.

Her interview with ABC airs tonight on 20/20 at 10 p.m. ET.

Remember how, just the other day, we were speculating on the next form of desperate advertising? We predicted that, what with all the full frontal nudity in American Apparel ads, the only thing left for marketing people to try was blatant hardcore sex.

While we were only half-serious, we couldn't have realized how close we were to the truth. For the very next day, a story broke about an ad agency using actual prostitutes in a campaign...

It appears to be a legitimate activist attempt to start a discussion about legalizing prostitution, right? Actually, it's yet another not-so-guerilla stunt by a ratings-starved radio station without anything else to offer. (You can see the logo for Toronto's CFRB 1010 in the bottom right corner of the signs.)

In an interview with local media, the Bad Date Coalition of Toronto, which advocates for sex workers, attacked the ad and its producers:

“It’s to give that radio station attention. It has nothing to do with helping out the sex worker … It’s using them,” she said. “If we wanted to have an actual discussion … have the sex workers come in and have it in a place where it’s safe and where people can call in and respectfully ask questions.”
She said having the women display a sign on the street “sets them up” to be targeted by police and predators.

While we don't disagree with her on the radio station bit, it's a bit silly to say the signs set them up to be targeted by police-- after all, they were already standing there, working as prostitutes, being targets for police, when the ad agency waltzed by and asked if they wanted to earn an hour's wage without doing anything illegal, which can't be a bad thing.

The city of Ontario, which is approximately 40 minutes (plus traffic) east of Los Angeles, has come under scrutiny for its high number of underage prostitutes. In a Daily Bulletin story over the weekend, the police explain the how, what, why of teenage prostitution in California and give us a rundown of the Top 4 Reasons Pimps Succeed...

First, let's break this epic(ally droning) piece down for readability's sake:

Note to johns: It is a crime for an adult to have sex with a minor, even if it is solicited. That's the law. You will be guilty of several felonies. [No shit, really?]

They told of another girl from the Inland area, who was taken to Vegas by her pimp called Mayo and was required to perform 18 tricks a week.
The officers said that 75 percent or more of the children lured into prostitution have been sexually or physically abused in the past.
"They are looking for structure and the pimps give it to them," the officers said.
Once a girl is hooked, she can't get out. The officers likened it to domestic violence were the abused spouse keeps going back because they see no way out. Some of these 14-, 15- and 16-year-old girls we try to interview in juvenile hall are hard as concrete, they said. But each of the officers said they love the job and feel it's a place where they can make a difference.

COERCION - She needs money and he shows her how to get it.
VIOLENCE - Immediate and brutal if she refuses.

We say: ladies, it's never a wise decision to sell yourself on the streets, although if you feel that you must, perhaps it's best to remember a pimp is like the film agent who takes 15% of your novel sale-- you don't need 'em. (And young ladies who feel trapped-- these pimps can't touch when they're behind bars for 20 years, thanks to your testimony.)

Kim Ae-ran is a fifty-eight-year-old former prostitute living in South Korea. She's been reading in the news about how her country is seeking apologies and other reparations from the government of Japan and it's been pissing her off. Not because she disagrees-- she just thinks the U.S. government's involvement in her country's underworld should be addressed as well.

“Our government was one big pimp for the U.S. military,” she says, and that's just the beginning...

Today's New York Times features a story on women who were tools of the South Korean government, which they accuse of boosting prostitution in the country in order to stabilize the economy and keep the Americans satiated.

The Korean police would then detain the prostitutes who were thought to be ill, the women said, locking them up under guard in so-called monkey houses, where the windows had bars. There, the prostitutes were forced to take medications until they were well.
The women... compared themselves to the so-called comfort women who have won widespread public sympathy for being forced into prostitution by the Japanese during World War II. Whether prostitutes by choice, need or coercion, the women say, they were all victims of government policies.

A woman, identified only as "Bae" in the above and other photographs, is 80-years-old, living on welfare and off of an oxygen machine. Her loose collective seeks compensation and an official apology, which we doubt will come anytime soon...

A Pennsylvania college student has recently written a very detailed account of what she calls her "mutually beneficial arrangement," but we call blatant prostitution.

The Daily Beast ran an essay last week written by a young woman who sees turning "classy" tricks as the best way to deal with college debt and making connections to benefit her non-hookerish career.

From the outside, a mutually beneficial, or sugar daddy, relationship seems immoral. Maybe even the distant cousin of—dare I say it?—prostitution. But truth be told, women have used their wiles and charms to get ahead for years.

We assume she's watched Pretty Woman one too many times (we still can't believe people like that fucked-up movie).

After she published her piece many readers commented, criticizing her as a two-bit call girl. So now she's back again defending her whorish ways in response to her judgemental public.

We know college is ridiculously expensive and some miserable marriages may arguably fall under the unintentional arrangement of prostitution, we've also read Madame Bovary, but in this case the line does not look as blurry as this young coed would like, especially when she talks about her, "new killer wardrobe."

You didn't think this guy was just going to disappear did you? Rumors have been floating around about a run for the Senate, but we still think it's too soon for New York to forgive and forget, though Bill Clinton's scandal only seemed to make him stronger. Spitzer's just going to ease back into the spotlight with a bimonthly column. There's a link to it after the jump.

And again, we swear he's not writing for us.

And it's not about sex either.

Eliot Spitzer's new column, "The Best Policy," appears on Slate today and it's about government, regulation and finance, which we will admit he does know very well.

The New York Observer reports:

"He's going to be doing a regular thing," said Jacob Weisberg, the editor-in-chief of the Slate Group. "It'll be heavily about the financial crisis and fixing financial markets and the economy generally."

The percentage of people trading sex for booze is on the rise in the U.S. and Canada, especially among former Brady Bunch stars.

Now a truly oblivious police department in Sweden wants to warn teens about trading sex for booze... as some guys would like to have sex with you in exchange for the booze. Thank you, Lieutenant Obvious...

Police in Stockholm, Sweden are concerned about what they perceive to be a rise in teenage girls offering their bodies to creepy men who are lurking outside liquor stores, hoping teenage girls will offer up their bodies. Police also say these teens are arranging sex by-- breaking news, people!-- text messages and a newfangled invention called the internet, which is apparently a ripoff of the Bulletin Board System.

Seriously, these cops are freaking out over one case in which a guy convicted of sexual harassment and for possessing child pornography bought three sixteen-year-old girls a stockpile of liquor and then brought them back to their place. No word on whether these teenagers (who were dumb enough to not rip the guy off and just take off running with their booze) were molested, but no matter...

Word to Swedish police: this practice has been going on since the advent of moonshine, and probably even before that. Telling teenagers not to do something only encourages them-- you should instead put up posters of very hairy older men saying, "Yes, we'd love to buy you a six pack... but you'll have to spend an hour in my World of Warcraft sex dungeon first." That should take care of the problem right quick...

Oh Ashley Dupré, you looked so pretty in that white bikini. You seemed so confident and self-possessed and interesting—well, your stomach seemed interesting, at least. Because of this “interest” in you and your story, our hopes were understandably high when we heard you’d be giving an interview to Diane Sawyer on 20/20. We got excited just imagining all the wonderful information you would relate—intimate details about Eliot Spitzer’s sock-wearing habits, advice on where to buy a white bikini, gossip about the sock-wearing habits of other high-profile politicians, etc.

It’s with these possibly inflated expectations that we sat down to watch Ashley Dupré--a.k.a. Kristen—the $2,000/hr “escort” tell her side of the story last Friday night.

While we realized that we weren’t gonna get a $2,000/hr visit from Kristen, was it too much to ask for a little backbone or some spunk? Ashley, buddy, where is your spirit? You’re on TV. You used to have sex for money and now you don’t and probably between the book deal, the solo album, and the endorsement possibilities you’re gonna be just fine—so give us a little more to work with then “I’m only 22 years old,” “I really love my dog” and “I’m sorry Silda.”

All in all the event was sort of lame and uncomfortable with Diane demanding lots of gory details and Ashley demurring and saying things like, “I’ve been advised not to discuss that matter.” Diane was really disappointed either because Ashley’s gone and thrown what could have been a perfectly good life as an administrative assistant down the drain by doing sex for money or because the interview was so dull. Frankly, it was hard not to be brought down by the whole affair.

But, the night was not a complete wash because where 20/20 fears to tread, Nightline owns property. And boy, did they manage to turn prostitution into the night’s theme. Brilliant investigative journalists that they are, Nightline learned that in these hard economic times, applications to the Nevada’s legal brothel the Mustang Ranch have skyrocketed. When the mall isn’t hiring, it’s time to check with the Madam.

The juxtaposition of Diane Sawyer’s stern, moralizing look at Ashley Dupré, and the gleeful depiction of an unwitting young woman’s foray into legalized prostitution—complete with an unnecessary discussion of what toiletries she’ll need and how to disinfect the dude's body—totally made staying in Friday night and watching ABC worth it. By the time Neal Karlinsky assured us that these enterprising young women we're “going to be just fine” during this recession we might as well have been on our fourth martini...at least that's how nauseous we felt.

You drive a Lexus and instead of paying a speeding ticket you bribe a police officer with sex? Damn, they must have some harsh penalties for speeding in California...

According to the Union-Tribune in San Diego, a woman was busted at her hotel room shortly after a court appearance for having sex with the police officer who wrote her a speeding ticket but showed up to testify that the ticket was no good at her trial. Jesus, Lady, what was it? Three hundred bucks? One fifty? Whether you were attracted to him or not, you had to know that it was way less trouble to just pay the ticket rather than facing your new charge of bribing a witness.

Here are the facts:

1) The cop (California Highway Patrol Officer Abram Carabajal) wrote the driver (Shirin Zarrindej) a ticket in March for speeding.

2) In June, the cop signed a subpoena agreeing to appear in court for the case.

3) The night before their court appearance, Carabajal, who is married with children, made a reservation for the next morning. How presumptuous of him.

4) Carabajal appeared in front of a judge and stated: “I did not receive a subpoena. I request in the interest of justice this be dismissed.”

5) After testifying, unindentified individuals spotted Carabajal and Zarrindej heading to a nearby GuestHouse Inn & Suites. There, Zarrindej paid with her credit card, disappeared inside (arm-in-arm!) with her pursuer/savior, and was arrested following his departure.

So, rather than pay a couple hundred bucks... the woman commits a far greater crime, pays for a last-minute hotel reservation with her own credit card, has possibly an hour of sex with a married man, and hangs around to get busted, possibly for bribery, conspiracy, and perjury. How do you think her legal expenses, fines (or jail time), hotel bill, and lost wages from fighting this next case compare to the original traffic ticket? And are these two a match made in heaven or what?

Five officers arrived at the hotel room at 1:42 p.m. Zarrindej told them she wanted to have sex with Carabajal and didn't care that he was married and had children. She told investigators that “Carabajal was her boyfriend and that she was in love with him.” [SignOn San Diego]

Police: Woman Swapped Sex For Gas

It was bound to happen sooner or later.

In Fort Wright, KY, where the average gas price is about $4.19, a man and a woman have been busted by the local authorities for engaging in an unlawful exchange of sex for gasoline...

Police in Fort Wright set up a prostitution sting and said one of the suspects they arrested engaged in sex for a $100 gasoline card and other gifts.
Thirty-four-year-old Angela Eversole of Fort Wright is charged with prostitution and doing business without an occupational license. She pleaded not guilty at a Tuesday arraignment.
Police also arrested a man they said paid Eversole. He is 50-year-old Kenneth Nowak of Avon, Indiana.
Kenton County prosecutor Ken Easterling said it's sad when people are selling their bodies for gas.

Our favorite part of this has nothing to do with the sad fact that high gasoline prices are making everybody crazy, it's the part about "doing business without an occupational license." As if that would've made a difference in Kentucky!

By the way, this has nothing to do with the sex-for-gas offer gone bad in Mesa, AZ awhile back.
