If These F-ing Hippies Would Have Gotten The Swine Flu Shot in The 70's Maybe We Wouldn't Be In This Mess

We're starting to believe that this swine flu business is really just a giant hoax created by the media to save media jobs. And if that's true, well, we can't really blame anyone. But if it turns out to be a real threat, we have only our parents to blame. The pig virus reared its ugly pink snout back in the seventies, and if those damn hippies would have just taken the time to eradicate it with a simple vaccine, maybe we wouldn't have crazies running around New York in masks and schools closing in Texas. But no, they were too busy making free love and taking magic mushrooms. Now we're all going to die. Thanks, you f-ing hippies, for not being scared enough by this 1976 swine flu PSA.

A Pageant for a High Holiday

Today is April 20th, aka 4/20, aka 4:20 Dood! The stoney secret of 4/20 is really out now that the New York Times has written about it.

With everyone else more concerned this year with whether the gays should be allowed to marry or not, marijuana is seemingly sneaking in on the verge of legalization for real this time. And so now more than ever, High Times magazine is celebrating with their annual 420 Party and Miss High Times Pageant, to be held at a secret location tonight.

It was worth checking the party's web page just to see the apparent difficulty a few of the stoners had with this whole "ordering tickets online" process.

California Introduces Bill to Legalize Marijuana

The tanking economy has to have some positive results, and this could be one of them. California Assemblyman Tom Ammiano held a press conference yesterday to introduce his marijuana legalization bill, which would decriminalize the cultivation, transport and sale of marijuana and paraphernalia to adults over 21, and levy a tax on all sales at $50 an ounce.

But that's okay, stonies, because they're saying legal pot would cost about half of what it costs now.

It's reminiscent of the plot to those once "unconventional" 90's love dramas/action movies where fate drops in on a young desperate couple in the form of something illegal that could lead to their financial freedom in a get-the-hell-outta-dodge sort of way, which is inevitably followed by blood and mayhem while we root for love to prevail.

New Yorker Reporter Spends Time the California Way-- High on Medicinal Marijuana

Harper's and New Yorker contributor David Samuels has an article in this week's New Yorker about the business of growing, distributing, dispensing and smoking medicinal marijuana in the Sunshine State. It is a long article. Apparently, there is a lot of enthusiasm for horticulture in California right now.

Doug Benson's Super High Me Premieres at South-by-Southwest

Reviews and the teaser for Super High Me, Marijuana Logues co-creator and High Times' Stoner of the Year 2006 Doug Benson's documentary have been making the rounds across the interweb this morning and it's looking like some funny shit. Jenna Wortham from Wired saw it this weekend at South-by-Southwest and dug it, and Morgan Spurlock "promised not to sue" but wished he'd seen the film.

Being more boozehound than stoner, pot-inspired jokes don't come that naturally to us. So just check the teaser after the jump and try not to spill the bong water or whatever the fuck you burnouts do:

We Scanner folk may have 24-hour food delivery and Babes in Toyland, but vending machine marijuana is enough for L.A. to usurp all of NYC's best traits.

Unfortunately, you can't just fly out there and wait in line with a couple thousand-dollar bills at a RiteAid on Wilshire Boulevard. You're gonna get a doctor's note (forged), California residency (doctored), and a laundry list of items to pick up for my next eight birthday parties. Dude! They even have Grandaddy Purple, which is like taking LSD and going to a Right-to-Life Party rally-- your mind wants to explode, you vomit and cry with happiness, but you cannot move because Ted Haggard is rubbing your leg.
