The Filthy Secret Message of a Tofu-Loving Vanity Plate

Kelly Coffman-Lee of Colorado wanted to get vanity plates declaring her love of tofu, but her request was denied, because it might look like she loved to "F.U."

"Some people could misinterpret what she loves... There are many people who would see that and be offended, so we need to be aware of it," said Mark Couch, a Colorado state official.

"Tofu! It's a word," Coffman-Lee said. "So if the DMV is going to start censoring what people are thinking, that's a little bit 1984." 

Suddenly, the baffling amount of catcalls and hellos I got in one day a few years ago when I wore an I <3 TOFU tank top is making a little more sense...
