Top 100 Books of 2008

Posted by Scanner Matt

As always the New York Times has published their list of notable books from Dec. 2, 2007 to the present (holiday season). The list consists of the usual suspects: Updike, Roth (although we thought Indignation was great), Toni Morrison and the new generation of authors who have already written their way to modern classics and instant best sellers, such as Jhumpa Lahiri and now the seemingly unstoppable Chilean author (though new to America), Roberto Bolano.

The list consists of fiction, poetry and nonfiction. The editors at the NYTimes claim it was, "...a process that lasted many weeks and involved much good-natured dispute and the occasional sleepless night." They sound like a real wild bunch.

A few novels we think are notable from the NYTimes notables are: Netherland by Joseph O'Neill (we bet it makes the top 10), Atmospheric Disturbances by Rivka Galchen and 2666 by Roberto Bolano (another top 10'er?).

We still have to catch up on our new nonfiction reading and poetry.

Here's the list, which is cuurently online and will be in print this weekend.

It was in last weekend's paper.

Girl Meets Boy (Ali Smith) and The Flying Troutmans (Miriam Toews) are two of my faves.
