It's
contrition for sexual misconduct. The wife is understood to be the
first victim, and must be the first to forgive him, if he is to have
any chance with the public.
Ah hah. And then we learn that in Spain, no one really gives a rat's ass about how a politician's wife responds to the sexual habits of her husband.
Says Juan, the Spanish journalist:
I think the Spanish would not see it as a good thing for a politician
to show up with his wife in a press conference. They would think, "this
jerk not only cheats her, but humiliates her in public for his own
selfish interest!" Probably she would be criticized for agreeing to
play this PR game.
For a second there, we caught a whiff of fresh air and sanity. Then we checked the address on our passports and remembered that we're American and therefore, stuck with this standing-by-man crock of shit.
