Ain't No Party Like a Myanmar Monastery Party

Posted by sarahhepola

Every once in a while, we like to bring you breaking news from Myanmar. Why? Because Scanner is global and political and serious as a freaking heart attack. We’re reading The Economist right now. In French. Well, today we have a story about porn films, condoms, and dildos recently confiscated from a Myanmar monastery. Hmm, we need to learn more about Buddhism. In other parts of the world, this has not been the best news week for men of the cloth. Some poor preacher in Alabama was found dead, hogtied in a wet suit, apparently done in by autoerotic asphyxiation. Woof, enough sad tales already. Somebody throw some adorable cat videos up into this mix.

UPDATE: It has been brought to our attention that the story about Buddhist monks is dubious, please to ignore. The cat video, however, is still gold.

Did you bother to look at the source for the 'report' that those objects were confiscated from the monasteries?  It's from "The New Light of Myanmar", a state run propaganda paper that is forced down the throat of the civil service. It's highly unlikely that there is any substance to this report, and it was clearly an attempt to smear the image of the highly revered, and now imprisoned or martyred, monks in the eyes of the public.  That Scanner would pass this off as a cute and flippant 'naughty sex news' bit, given the reality of what is happening in Burma, is reprehensible.

What, because this has been the best news week ever for Burmese men of the cloth?!  I second Deborah's disgust.

The source for your post, the New Light of Myanmar, is a state-controlled newspaper.  If you don't recall, this is the same state that is currently murdering thousands of monks for daring to march for democracy and has attempted to shut out any reports on the atrocities.  Please take down this ridiculous post that regurgitates the propaganda of one of the most repressive countries on earth.

Yeah, I'm going to have to join the politically-correct brigade here. Doing a "funny" post about Burmese monks at this particular time is beyond tasteless. Reading the post, it seems possible that you weren't even aware of the recent crackdown in Burma... were you?

When you added the "update", you couldn't have tossed something in about the thousands of monks being held in detention right now, the unknown numbers who were murdered in the last couple weeks? Just for a bit of context before you got back to the importance business of the cat video?

I know, I know. We don't come to Scanner for political news. But honestly, this is like making a "Jewish sausage" joke at the Holocaust museum.
