Hollywood Sex Scene of the Day: Randy Spelling and Diora Baird in “Hot Tamales”

Not having seen the movie, I’m not sure what exactly “hot tamales” refers to. Though it could definitely be actress Diora Baird’s stupendous lady-humps. I’m not sure that appearing as a nice set of breasts in The Wedding Crashers constitutes a break-out role, but she had her moment with a Wilson brother. After that came 2006’s Hot Tamales, opposite Tori’s brother, Randy Spelling.

This roll-in-the-hay scene features the best line I’ve ever heard, if (a) one of you happens to be wearing camouflage underwear and if (b) the other one of you happens to be veteran…

Nerve editor Peter Smith got to sit down with directors Garth Jennings and Nick Goldsmith. The duo made a name for themselves helming music videos for Blur, Pulp and R.E.M….not to mention a little film called The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Their latest, Son of Rambow, “follows schoolboy Will (newcomer Bill Milner, an instantly endearing tangle of scrawny limbs), raised by his mother in a conservative religious sect, the Plymouth Brethren. His upbringing has kept him away from all media, so when his troublemaking classmate Lee Carter shows him a bootleg copy of Sylvester Stallone's First Blood, his world is forever changed, and he and Lee Carter set off to make their own First Blood sequel — Son of Rambow."

Flakes: “If you want a cute, snarky picture book put onscreen, you've got it here. If you wanted something deeper — even some representation of multifaceted life or complex love — you just end up with a soggy mess.”

Senator Obama Goes to Africa (DVD): “Senator Obama Goes to Africa is more political propaganda than international-awareness builder ("As seen on Oprah!" cheers the DVD case), but that doesn't mean it's not a good film.”

Two terrific pieces from the film issue that I missed while I was out:

This is a great, long interview with Joseph Lanza, whose book Phallic Frenzy “spends as many pages describing [Ken] Russell's onscreen pageantry as its symbolic underpinnings: exaggerated phallic imagery, abrasive anti-religious scenes, nude male wrestling, incontinence, rape and forced enemas.”

Says Lanza, “Some people will look at the book and say, "Phallic Frenzy? This must be pornography." Well, it's about penises, but it's often about how terrifying they can be, and what the penis might have represented to Ken Russell at various times of his life.”

In Will Doig’s charming piece, “Hollywood Square,” Will talks about his love for mediocre Hollywood comedies. Many of them feature John Candy. None of them are good date movies.

“Made in America is not a film you want anyone to know you've seen, least of all a philosophy major from the University of Maryland whom you're trying to have sex with. I knew, even as I was walking the box to the Blockbuster counter, that I was torpedoing the date. I could have rented a Cassavetes or a Schlesinger, but I couldn't stop myself. I was going to make him watch this, dammit.”

Well, it's not great, to be honest. The whole idea of, "Paul Giamatti is kind of sexy." Well, yeah he's sexy. Ask his fucking wife or anyone he's ever laid.

Is it surprising? No, because attraction doesn't come from abs and pecs. It comes from somewhere else altogether. If Penelope Cruz was a shit actress, no one would fancy her. It's that simple. Because the actresses who are beautiful and act like shit are going to be forgotten in about five days. So it's double-edged sword, because people are like, "Hey, you're sexy! But you're kind of ugly!" I'm not supposed to be happy about that.
