Get Boned Playing Jenga… For Real, This Time

Posted by Alex Zalben

Last week, I, rather meanly, posted the above picture, and told you to click after the jump to find out how you could get boned playing Jenga. Turns out, it was a Jenga game made out of bones! I’m tricksy!

However, I felt a little bad about that, especially as I do actually know (and have played) a version of Jenga that will seriously get you boned. I’m not kidding, and to re-win your trust, just scroll down:

See? I wasn’t lying. It’s Truth or Dare Jenga! Now, I’ve played some corporately produced Truth or Dare games in my time, including an electronic Truth or Dare that came with such great truths as, “Who’s the tallest person?” and dares like, “Hide under a table.”

Truth or Dare Jenga is not like that, and I know from first hand experience. Now, I’m not one to kiss and tell, but let’s just say I played this game, kissed some people, and now I’m telling you about it. I will say no more!

So here’s how it works… There are eighteen Truth blocks, eighteen Dare blocks, and the ever popular eighteen Blank blocks. You set up the Jenga, and play as normal; except, every block you pull out, you have to do a Truth or a Dare. And the reason the blank blocks are the best? It’s because the people playing the game fill in the (erasable) blocks with their own truths or dares before the game starts. So, you avoid all the hemming and hawing associated with truthing and daring on the spot, and the blocks are anonymous enough that everybody feels like they have to follow ‘em.

If sexy party games aren’t normally your thing, and let’s be fair, they’re not many people’s things, this one may cross the line into “socially okay,” right before it crosses that line again.

It seems like this game actually isn’t produced anymore (I'm old!), but there’s one available on eBay for cheap, so check it out.

[$5, eBay]

Wendy Atterberry is a recent transplant to New York City via Chicago. You can often find her at some karaoke dive bar singing her repertoire, which includes "Midnight Train to Georgia," "Daniel," and most recently, "Sweet Dreams." Don't expect her to always hit the right notes. She lives in Manhattan with her boyfriend and two cats, and has a blog like everyone else.

Alex Zalben is a writer living in New York City. He's written for McSweeney's, Modern Humorist and PulpSecret.com. As one-fifth of the sketch comedy group Elephant Larry, he has been written up in the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, and pretty much every other major publication. Their blog was named one of PC Magazine's Top Blogs for 2007, and they recently won an ECNY Award for their viral short, "Minesweeper: The Movie." Alex did not know love until he bought his first Mac.

Steph Auteri is a freelance writer and proofreader who has been published in Publishers Weekly, New York Press, Playgirl, and other bastions of fine writing. She maintains a professional site http://www.stephiswrite.com, and also blogs about freelancing over at Freelancedom. You can keep up on her day-to-day by visiting her Twitter page.

Diana Vilibert is a freelance writer, among other things. Born in Lithuania, she now lives in New Jersey, where she doesn't have to walk to work ten miles in the snow, barefoot, uphill both ways. Diana cannot afford most of the products she writes about because she buys too many pairs of heels to make up for her shoeless childhood. She's written for MarieClaire.com, Janemag.com, and CosmoGIRL!.
