Best Buy

Posted by Wendy Atterberry

I went to Chicago last weekend to visit some friends and while I was there I stopped by my favorite boutique to check out the big 75% off sale. I must have tried on no fewer than 30 items of clothing and sadly, nothing fit quite right. In fact, everything looked pretty bad on me—pants pulled across my ass and gapped through my waist, shirts tugged awkwardly in all the wrong places, and dresses looked like potato sacks on me despite their cute shapes and styles on the hangars. (A happy ending after the jump).

Feeling defeated—and a bit desperate to find a great bargain—I headed to the shoe section where I found these cute London Fly ankle boots. Despite not knowing a thing about the brand, I bought them anyway because they were 75% off, people! I probably would have bought them if they'd been hot pink and half a size too small. They were, luckily, the right size and color for me and thankfully, they've turned out to be the most comfortable pair of boots I've ever owned. The flexible rubber sole make them great for urban walking, and as I can attest, standing in line for an hour in the cold waiting to get into the Playgirl party (but that's another story). And though I couldn't find them online for 75% off, I came pretty close. You can get them at Amazon for a cool 69% savings. Your feet will thank you.

Wendy Atterberry is a recent transplant to New York City via Chicago. You can often find her at some karaoke dive bar singing her repertoire, which includes "Midnight Train to Georgia," "Daniel," and most recently, "Sweet Dreams." Don't expect her to always hit the right notes. She lives in Manhattan with her boyfriend and two cats, and has a blog like everyone else.

Alex Zalben is a writer living in New York City. He's written for McSweeney's, Modern Humorist and PulpSecret.com. As one-fifth of the sketch comedy group Elephant Larry, he has been written up in the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, and pretty much every other major publication. Their blog was named one of PC Magazine's Top Blogs for 2007, and they recently won an ECNY Award for their viral short, "Minesweeper: The Movie." Alex did not know love until he bought his first Mac.

Steph Auteri is a freelance just-about-everything, with a special fondness for home goods she can't afford. She has been published in Publishers Weekly, New York Press and Nerve. She runs the blog selfhelpme.net, and her work can be found at stephiswrite.com.
